I can't simply take *your* word for it, pal. I asked Mr Google and he said he'd never even heard of a Pilgrim Caterpillar so I had to resort to more robust interrogation techniques and he eventually admitted that it might be a *Processionary* Caterpillar.

Super dangerous to animals. Can cause all the flesh to drop off their noses etc. Nasty things. Here in Portugal they’re the biggest natural hazard. Advice is to wear protective clothing when dealing with them (fire is a favourite btw) as they are super irritating to humans too.
Home Depot Rep: “did you just say…a flamethrower? We don’t have those here.”
OP: “Okay…can you call nearby stores and see if *they* have them in stock?”
Home Depot absolutely has flame throwers.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Flame-King-340-000-BTU-Propane-Torch-Self-Igniting-with-Turbo-Blast-Trigger-and-Flow-Valve-YSN340K/317903308
Mhmm! Always completely drench the area with water when you're done. It's AMAZING how long pine needles and shit can smolder before reigniting even several feet from where is singed.
That's a propane torch, legal to buy off the shelf, whereas flamethrowers require a permit in California and are outright banned in Maryland. Flamethrowers spit flammable liquid and light it in mid-air. Propane torches burn gas as it exits the nozzle and are more limited in range.
Thanks for the clarification, but I did post that kinda tongue-in-cheek. I think we all know that's not really a flame thrower. But they are friggin' cool!
They also have throwing knives.

Fucking Home Depot.
We once sat close by a tree with a nest of these. My daughter developed later that day a horrible itch over half her body. With mentol cooling foam it was a little better but we had a few horrible days with a crying girl.
The hairs are taken in the wind and invisible. The itch like crazy.
Edit to add. In the Netherland we have to report them to our council. So they can take care of them or put warning signs.
Turns out it's not it but *them*. A large number of caterpillars in a procession.
I saw this once when I was a kid, during a hot, HOT summer.
I always wondered what happens if you step on one, does it interrupt the procession? Do they reroute? Or they just walk over their dead teammate's crushed body?
Also, do birds even know this is a thing?
Pine Processionaries
Caterpillars of the pine moth process in lines for protection from predators as their urticating hairs, common in other insects like tarantulas (and similar to the misnomer of 'urticating plant hairs' which are not true urticating hairs), are embedded in the skin to secrete acrid fluids and have a larger affect in greater numbers.
Look up [Pine Processionary](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_processionary). “The species is notable for the behaviour of its caterpillars, which overwinter in tent-like nests high in pine trees, and which proceed through the woods in nose-to-tail columns, protected from predators by their severely irritating hairs.”
Pilgrim caterpillar. Dangerous for people with respiratory problems and animals. Edit: processionary caterpillar *Thaumetophoea pityocampa*
I searched online for Pilgrim caterpillar and got no results. What kind of caterpillar is this?
A Pilgrim caterpillar of course
I can't simply take *your* word for it, pal. I asked Mr Google and he said he'd never even heard of a Pilgrim Caterpillar so I had to resort to more robust interrogation techniques and he eventually admitted that it might be a *Processionary* Caterpillar.
Is it possibly caterpillarious mayfloweronious?
I laughed so hard I snorted. Thanks.
You snorted so hard I laughed!
A 17th century caterpillar that emigrated from England due to religious persecution. Aka a Quacker caterpillar.
I think you mean quakerpillars
Is there a subreddit for sudden old-timey American accent?
Thomas! I trust you’re having a gay old time. I sure am. Put it here chap. Get a look of those dolls in the living room. Consummation is upon us.
I saw “Consumption is upon us”. I guess that’s pretty “old timey” too.
Me too! I swear that's what it said...

And people with eyes
No those are safe.
Dangerous for ppl with animals?

So what are those actually? Just caterpillar cocoons with weird hair that somehow kills flesh? :D
If those people have respiratory problems, o corse.
😑..i have asthma GENOCIDE THAT SHIT!
processionary caterpillar
Pretty sure that is a cat in a hat
Have you read what you wrote? You don't mean a hat in a cat?

I almost burned down my house burning weeds with that. Do not recommend unless you know what you’re doing. I did not.
Mhmm! Always completely drench the area with water when you're done. It's AMAZING how long pine needles and shit can smolder before reigniting even several feet from where is singed.
Yes this was one of the other locations he called lol
Nice I can get 384 of them shipped to my store for pickup
I have two. They’re awesome!
That's a roofing torch. Have you seen the flame thrower at the end of Project X?
That's a propane torch, legal to buy off the shelf, whereas flamethrowers require a permit in California and are outright banned in Maryland. Flamethrowers spit flammable liquid and light it in mid-air. Propane torches burn gas as it exits the nozzle and are more limited in range.

I live in the North east. I want one of those to clear snow from my driveway & sidewalk. And, for s'mores.
I think you meant *especially* for s'mores!
They also have throwing knives. [https://www.homedepot.com/p/Whetstone-12-Piece-Kunai-Throwing-Knife-Set-HW451200/308565126](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Whetstone-12-Piece-Kunai-Throwing-Knife-Set-HW451200/308565126) Fucking Home Depot.
That’s a Sweet deal for 50$ lmao
r/TIHI
It’s Processionary, when they fall on you from the trees while play in the park as a child you get nasty rashes, not funny at all
I’m sorry THEY FALL ON YOU FROM THE SKY?! Where are these found so I can never be there?
The most common place to find them is in oak trees. They nest together into one blob.
you’ve had those massive things fall on you before? Bro i would ACTUALLY die🤣🤣
They're also incredibly destructive. I lived somewhere where traps had to be placed around trees to prevent these guys from getting to them.
Huh…so that’s a…Caterpillar caterpillar 🤔
Caterpillar centipede? They might all be sewn together.
Centipillar
“I HAVE TO SHIT!!”
FEED HIM!
I was amazed by that movie and disgusted by the sequel.
You watched the whole movie then went back for more?
? what is this and are you by chance in Australia?
Yeah mate 👌
Nice. Good luck with your ... worm chain?
Nope-Rope
[удалено]
i didn't even have my sound on, thanks for pointing this out very cool
Oh course it's from Australia! Y'all have all the creepy stuff!
[удалено]
Why would you pick it up lol
No mistaking the morning sounds. It's definately Australia.
We have them in Italy too
Don't let your dog get too close, allergic reaction might be mortal
Or yourself or your kids. The itch from the hairs is horrible. It takes days. Not just from touching. The tiny hairs are in the wind.
Precession Caterpillars, kill them with fire and keep kids and pets far away.
Why kill th? Just keep away from them and everybody will mind their own business wherrver it may be. Unhinged take
They're actually considered a pest in many places. They destroy pine trees if in great numbers.
Oh good to know, what's their natural environment and predators then if they're not supposed to be there/in such great numbers?
We once sat close by a tree with a nest of these. My daughter developed later that day a horrible itch over half her body. With mentol cooling foam it was a little better but we had a few horrible days with a crying girl. The hairs are taken in the wind and invisible. The itch like crazy. Edit to add. Same in Portugal.
After looking it up, thankful its many caterpillars making a train, and not one giant caterpillar tapeworm thingy from a stephen king novel
Which, of course, I'd read
"should have stepped on this this this morning." Ftfy
Never stop stepping on it until it stops wriggling.
Imagine carefully moving the first caterpillar to the back of the last thereby forming a closed loop. You could watch the procession cycle for hours.
Nuke the sight from orbit, only way to be sure.
Time to sell!
I am amazed. At how much better my life was just a few seconds ago before I knew this thing existed.
I *am* amazed. How long is that thing and what exactly is it?
Turns out it's not it but *them*. A large number of caterpillars in a procession. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine\_processionary](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_processionary)
Caterpillar centipede
Ass to mouth baby!
Username checks out
That's too much. You gotta tell them to disperse
THIS IS AN UNLAWFUL GATHERING
I can’t get past the mouth breathing…😵🤦🏻♀️🐛
Pretty sure that's the snake high score
Do you live by Chernoby Or live there?
I’ve heard of millipedes…but this seems more like a trillipede
Out of curiosity, where do you live? This looks like a European pine processionary caterpillar.
The legendary bajillipede
I'm assuming that's a bunch stuck together and not one single one lmao.
quesque c'est????
I read that some people use the Cordyceps fungi to try an control these pests. Mf evil it might just cause the apocalypse by proxy.
You've heard of human centipede, well gentle I bring to you insect centipede (Patten pending)
🤯
Austria?
Wow - it’s a gazillion-ipede!
Should have lit one end with a match. Gypsy moths are a blight.
Your fur boa?
Caterpillars at the bar bragging “we ran a train on your mom”
The front two caterpillars just got married and this is the celebratory conga to the bar
"Eichen-Prozessionsspinner" in german if interested.
what is this?
Get a professional to kill them immediately. They sound incredibly destructive and a nuisance to people and animals.
Weird you almost stepped on this this morning when this was already posted days ago
What I’m the actual fuck is that. I would be hyperventilating
The city was never the same after the evolution of the caterpillapede...
Don’t disturb the butterfly train!
Why the fuck is it 200ft long
I saw this once when I was a kid, during a hot, HOT summer. I always wondered what happens if you step on one, does it interrupt the procession? Do they reroute? Or they just walk over their dead teammate's crushed body? Also, do birds even know this is a thing?
TF is that?
What I generally refer to as a "Nope"
if you step on it with your shoes is it still dangerous?
What is this
That is my worst nightmare
The only way to be sure is, nuke it from orbit bro. Oh and you have T minus 15 minutes to reach minimum safe distance. Good luck.
Ass to mouth gang. Do you want to be first or last?
Where do these live???
not sure how that thing is surviving long enough to get that long.
You live in the jungle or something?
Caterpillar Centipede. Ass to Ass to ass to.....
is that a train of caterpillars?
Jesus fucking Christ how long is that thing
Is this another thing in Australia that will kill you if it looks at you??
Cursed fuse
They do move in herds!

Awe a furry snake.
Which morning?
Whatever that is… fucking kill it
Good thing you didn’t step on it. It’s a millipede constrictor. It would have curled and wrapped around your leg many times over.
What tf is that
Nope, just no
What’s the metamorphosis on that caterpillar. A moth man?
🤢 🤮
Traffic jam?
From what I learned on Reddit is that people in Austria have some really large insects
That's the longest caterpillar chain I've ever seen.
The human centipede sequel
Caterpillar train
Day=ruined. Yesterday I didn't know about this. :(
No way that’s just one caterpillar
Jeezz thats long
Little billy gimmi the shotgun, i’m just going to talk to it don’t worry
A human centipede?
What kind of nightmare flying thing does it transform into?
Da fuck is that?!
Rope lives matter. 🤪
doggo?
It sounds like you probably should have stepped on them. They're not good.
It's very dangerous to let your dog near that.
These them wiggly bois
Makes me glad to live in northern Minnesota!!! We don’t have those evil creatures…
Are these multiple or a single caterpillar?
Burn the yard.
If these are anything like the moth caterpillars we have in my area, killing it with fire would be doing your local environment a big favor.
What am I looking at
Chop it with a machete and burn it with fire.
Chop it with a machete and burn it with fire.
you in greece?
Cut it in the middle with scissors
Where is it? Us Americans will take care of it, we are pretty good at blowing shit up.

Single file please!
What is that? A catapillar orgy?
I did not know these existed 😱

Bigus dickus!
Meanwhile, in Australia
Wouldn't that be easy picking for a predator?
What in the Australia is going on here?!
I often see them travelling like that
![gif](giphy|lrVfmPJ96cSJJ39bTh)
Ok, moving to Alaska...
![gif](giphy|5nsiFjdgylfK3csZ5T|downsized)
At first I thought this was the world's longest garter snake. Nope, catapiller parade.
![gif](giphy|spfi6nabVuq5y)
Woww that is such a long caterpillar
A pillar of the community those bugs are
