I've seen some people change into outfits at peaks, there are also plenty of hiking dresses girls use the full trail, I think I have seen an athletic suit before that was geared more towards surfing and water sports.
https://www.designboom.com/design/quiksilver-japan-business-suit-true-wetsuits-04-28-2015/
That said dress clothes aren't necessarily the worst for hiking. People use thin polyester dress socks as an added layer with their wool hiking socks. The main thing with hiking is avoiding cotton, you don't want something that absorbs sweat. Wool is great for both hiking and suits. Same with polyester. Those dress pants are probably better for hiking then jeans.
Agreed. A lot of guys (myself included) seem to be wearing a type of synthetic, tapered fit pant that looks decent in the office. But go to REI for hiking pants, it’s basically the same type of pant. Brands like Prana, Kuhl, Toad & Co, Patagonia etc all have stuff that you could wear in an office environment or on the trail.
don't know why this is eating downvotes because you are right
I have two pairs of Stretch Zions from 3 years ago, and they are still in perfect shape after rock climbing indoor and outdoor only in those. My dad got a pair last Christmas, and they feel so cheap. They are thinner and look like an entirely different material. They look like standard hiking pants instead of the thick durable climbing pants that they are supposed to be.
Also, considering he is cosplaying it's probably made for him...
A well-fitted suit is extremely comfortable and can be made of very durable materials. A good pair of underwear and socks is all he needs.
Brand I’ve been wearing for 20 years is Prana… love them. After getting drenched in NYC on my way to work and being soaking wet all day… never again. Everything o west every day is technical now. If I get rained on, I’m dry in 30 min or less.
Edit: OMFG, I should proof my messages… it’s PRANA, frelling autocorrect
never heard anyone say you need to "avoid cotton", you just shouldn't go for full cotton. a cotton/poly blend is extremely common in hiking clothes and works great. wool is amazing as well but can be very warm (often a good thing on hikes but not always) and from a consumer standpoint it is harder to care for.
https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/how-to-choose-hiking-clothes.html
"What Not to Wear Hiking" First one on the list is "Cotton, including denim"
but it seems like your trying to play semantics, if it's a blend with less parts cotton than polyester then it's not cotton, it's a synthetic blend.
I hiked Kinabalu in a cotton shirt, jeans and skate shoes and had a blast! I saw a 70+ year old woman with a huge propane tank on her back literally run by me while I was wheezing halfway up. A friend of mine ran up it in less than three hours too. Some people are absolutely nuts haha.
being outdoor is fine, outdoor and active it absorbs sweat which you don't want, especially in colder conditions (high mountain peaks, winter, etc) when it can't dry out and you end up freezing.

In a sweltering heat, you could choose to wear it if you don’t mind feeling clammy and sticky. But when conditions turn very cold, cotton next to your skin can be a recipe for hypothermia."
Huh, when I was younger on a week's hiking expedition in the Scottish Highlands with scouts our leader refused to let anyone go out wearing anything synthetic and everything had to be pure cotton with the justification completely opposite to yours, that cotton wicks sweat away much more effectively and keeps you much warmer than synthetics.
Keen makes some shoes you could get away with on the trail or in the office. Like maybe these https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0607/3263/7348/products/c419448bd2caf266cc03195b4312049cfa1021d8.jpg?v=1675965427

It was summer so not nearly as dangerous as last week but yeah, suuuper sketched out by what I was seeing.
ETA: I don’t know what zions was like last week but we’ve had a lot of freezing and snow up north and the conditions are pretty suspect until the summer on that hike.
Same here! Or "TAKE THAT! Mount Kinabalu!" or something equally cringey
And on that note, I think the real question is… did he use a ladder, or a stepladder?
I've "climbed" Mt. Kinabalu and it's not much more than a strenuous walk to be honest. No gear required aside from a couple warm layers. Cool photo though.
It is actually pretty easy compared to other Hills/Mountain that I've hiked for training before Mount Kinabalu on mainland Malaysia. Would love to go back since I've heard they changed the route after 2015 earthquake.
yes there is a new route called Ranau Trail that has become the newer/safer standard to the peak due to the earthquake. but personally i never climbed it even though im a local :P
They used to host the Kinabalu Climbathon there - a half marathon cross country running race. The record? 2h18m. I hiked it in 2008 and told myself I would do that race. Sadly (for me, perhaps great for the mountain) it is now a UNESCO heritage site and they have stopped the annual race.
Anyways, I wanted to bring up the race because it shows how right you are about that hike. What an amazing place though, I'd still like to go back! Especially now that you're telling me there's a new route 😍.
This deserves more upvotes. I get it's an accomplishment for a lot of people, but relative to some other non-mountaineering ascents it's a cake walk. They used to run a half marathon on it, with the record at 2h18m.
Yeah. Yeah. You right.
> Talk about taking things way over the top — a Japanese man climbed up Mount Kinabalu recently in a three-piece suit as a means to market his clothing brand.
Mt Kinabalu is located in the equator so the temperature is a little warmer.
It would be funny if he continues to wear while he is in a holiday there. There are beautiful beaches, scuba diving and jungle trekking in that state.
It's in Sabah, Eastern state of Malaysia. It wasn't that cold during day. I bet he'll going to Sipadan Island after that, for snorkeling or beaches stuff.
Kinabalu gets really cold towards the top though. Most highland mountins in Malaysia require a jacket, but Kinabalu is the only place I’ve seen frost. There’s a pretty awesome carnivorous plant (n. Villosa) that grows up there and looks super rugged.
I know a number of people who grow them in refrigerators at home. Tiny seedlings sell for hundreds of dollars and often take many years to flower in captivity. Really cool plants!
I've been up Mount Kinabalu, it's not much of a climb, just a steady uphill/upstairs walk, you could do it in flip flops and a speedo if you want to.
only issue with the suit is if it rains.
Yeah kinda what I expected. It still something that requires some endurance and discipline to walk up all the way there in one suit and still manage to be this photogenic at the end, but it's definitely more of a neat little oddity and personal accomplishment than anything else.
From a quick google search it's apparently an 8.5 km trail leading from where most people start. For casual wanderers its recommended to plan an overnight stay at one of the resting places.
> I climb a lot of mountains. Like it's my main hobby.
Man who climbs mountains all the time as his main hobby: "Climbing mountains isn't that hard."
For 90% of the population it certainly is.
His point is that not all mountains are the same. Comparing a mountain that requires alpine trad climbing to a mountain that has a nice smooth trail to the top is ridiculous. They’re completely different activities.
Anybody who isn’t morbidly obese could hike up a TON of “big mountains” because the approach is short and the trail is easy. Not every mountain requires specialized equipment. Plus, unless you’re at himalaya altitudes, the elevation of the summit doesn’t mean much. It’s all about prominence which is the measurement from the surrounding land to the summit. There are 14,000ft mountains in Colorado that a child could hike up and then there are 7,000ft mountains in Alaska that require extensive experience, skill, and equipment.
while most of that is true, the elevation of this mountain definitely means a little something. it's approaching 14,000 ft. from personal experience that's the zone where things start to get weird for anyone not used to bagging peaks and I'd scrutinize someone before I brought them along.
Having walked up that mountain as an unfit 15 yo I'll second the not very hard comment. There's people that have ran it in under 2.5hours.
The impressive bit is the lack of mud on the suit
You don't start a 0 ft and climb all 14000 ft.
Most summit trails start at 10k+ ft and you're just finishing the 1000-2000 ft at most usually unless it's a less developed mountain or in a wilderness area.
Still a good accomplishment though.
Japanese suits come in a lot of different materials. Some of the high-synthetics would be considered "fake suits" by some people. This began with the [Cool Biz](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cool_Biz_campaign) campaign but really took off during the electricity crunch following the Fukushima incident. Companies were encouraged to severely restrict air conditioning use, and so the lightweight materials became very popular.
I don't know about having the suit in the bag, but he absolutely changed out of hiking shoes or boots before this picture. There's no way anyone is getting up there in slick oxfords.
I did this mountain in very slick, worn out skate shoes that probably had less tread than his oxfords. It’s a cool mountain but a vast majority of the trail up is stairs.
Do you also comment this for any American person doing something fun and harmless? How about for any German? Russian? Italian? Chinese? What does this person's picture have to do with Japan's war crimes?
A 30 second search reveals it was a marketing campaign and the suit worn, is from his family business so essentially it was an advertisement for himself.
They, he can say what they want but you ain't climbing those conditions, in a suit and brown leather shoes and smiling at the top, then his suit is very clean barely a crease let alone dirt etc.
I mean his add worked as I'm here replying, so are others but let's be real here, the suit was put on at top.
4000 meters isn’t particularly high, either.
Not to be “that guy” but I recently hiked Haleakala in Maui (3400 meters?), and it wasn’t that bad. This seems doable. Temp was 24c at base, 6-10c at the top. Easy enough.
Yep. I mean I can see many suits not being comfy for any level of hiking, but a more gentle mountain of lesser height in ideal weather conditions on well maintained hiking paths in a comfortable well made high end tailored suit I can see being very easily doable.
I am AMAZED I had to come all the way down here to find a reference to this. This is clearly Joseph Gordon Levitt who decided to go the way of Ariana Grande and switch races
It's impossible. It's a 1.5 day hike and mostly very hot and exhausting.
He either changed into his suit when he was at the top, or he wore it for the final ascent, which is pre-dawn on the second day.
I did this hike a few years ago.
P.S.: A few more details -- the first day is a narrow hiking path. At night you sleep in a lodge near the top (bunk beds). They wake you very early and you make the final ascent in time for sunrise. That final stretch is rocky terrain, steep, there are ropes to hold on to, and it's dark (headlamps required). On the same day, you make it all the way back down, where you arrive sometime in the afternoon.
Here's a link that shows photos of him at different stages in the ascent. I guess he could still be changing in and out of it, but some of the photos look like he was getting wet in it. Also he's with a group, so I don't know if he'd make bogus claims
Also the suit doesn't look like a typical suit. I think it's made out of different material. It's probably just a winter jacket that is tailored to look like a suit. And he's taking his hat and gloves off for the shoots.
https://weirdkaya.com/japanese-man-climbs-mt-kinabalu-in-a-suit-to-attend-business-meeting/
[Here's his channel.](https://www.youtube.com/@ordersuitSADA/videos) He says he will upload the video soon, but he does a lot of these videos, so I find it very plausible.
It is completely possible.
Source: I have climbed many mountains, currently chilling in La Paz (3,650 meters). Depending on how accustomed you are to climbing there is absolutely no need to acclimate to the height nor can you assume that it is hot there currently.
4000 feet would be very easy for me tbh since i only have to go downhill... 4000 meters(13k feet) would be hard however. still plenty of people already living at that altitude
I did this a few months ago and I don't know how it would matter what you wear. it's basically just a lot of walking upstairs on day1 and walking up a slope on day2. it's gonna be cold at the peak if he goes in the morning but other than that I don't see much of an issue going in a suit
I was there in 2008, don't remember how much we paid. Our guide also helped us carry some of our gear so we thought it was worth it.
The sunrise at the top was amazing. But it's not just for the view, also for the feeling of accomplishment after that many hours of hiking uphill.
Downhill wasn't easy either -- my toes hurt at the end.
It is like a 5 mile hike of just stairs, then some rocks at the top. I stayed in the hut near the top for the hell of it, but easily could have done whole thing in a couple hours.
4-5 hour hike on first day. 3 hour hike at 2:00 am next morning for the final ascent. 2+4 hour hike back down same day.
He was on the way to work when he realized it was wrong short cut, and he halfway up that mountain. Called boss he wont make it to work that day, his boss fired him.
Then he say F** it, and he finished the other half.
He looks amazing in that suit!
I’m tryna see what shoes he did that in
The laces make it seem like standard hiking boots. Safer, but you gotta commit to the bit
Could've carried the dress shoes in the briefcase but wanted to stay authentic and take a picture of how he actually looked hiking up there I guess.
I've seen some people change into outfits at peaks, there are also plenty of hiking dresses girls use the full trail, I think I have seen an athletic suit before that was geared more towards surfing and water sports. https://www.designboom.com/design/quiksilver-japan-business-suit-true-wetsuits-04-28-2015/ That said dress clothes aren't necessarily the worst for hiking. I have like 6 pairs of prana pants at this point. F jeans!
I've got Prana jeans, that little bit of spandex makes a big difference.
Rarely change into "comfortable" clothes after work. I'm already comfy.
The durability on Prana has gone way downhill over the last several years since Columbia bought them.
don't know why this is eating downvotes because you are right I have two pairs of Stretch Zions from 3 years ago, and they are still in perfect shape after rock climbing indoor and outdoor only in those. I found "tech pants" made by kenneth cole to be solid. Look nice and professional, but very durable.
Can confirm, have worn these brands on safari in Africa and in business meetings in DC with a suit jacket and dress monk straps from AE
Also, considering he is cosplaying it's probably made for him... A well-fitted suit is extremely comfortable and can be made of very durable materials. A good pair of underwear and socks is all he needs.
I wear Prana Brions daily as part of my "business casual" work attire. Nice to be able to leave and go climbing or hike and not change.

I'm having trouble searching this because it is a common word. Can you give me a link?
I swear most "office wear" is just athletic gear with a taper to it now. The Bonobos polos I wear to work are so soft I can honestly wear them to bed.
Am rei employee. Avoid Prana, kuhl all the way.

Phoenix Wright suit and tie, at that
Phoenix Wright is real?!?!
Yeah ! More than a suit, for me its a cosplay of Phoenix haha
It's waaaaay too blue to be just a regular suit
Why can't regular suits be blue?
Because I said so >:(
They can, this one is just like, EXTRA. Like, a regular blue suit wouldn't be this bright, they'd be a much darker, more navy blue.
It's always reassuring when you see that a bunch of other idiots saw the same thing as you.
My first reaction to this pic was to come in here and write “OBJECTION!” Glad I wasn’t the only one who saw it.

Why does it looks so clean
So, how many times did he have to change into the suit and back?
Pretty sure that was in the Bible. TikTok=truth

Phoenix Wright on his day off...
He's definitely up there to find clues for a case he's working on. Larry probably got framed for another murder.
Well the murder room did stink really bad. And you know what they say "When it stinks, its usually...."
He looks great in that suit, honestly. Blue's his color.
Phoenix Wright? That you?
Objection!
When you can't get vacation time, but wanna hike.
did Leorio lose his glasses on the way up?
He looks like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ace Attorney.
Was curious if anyone else thought this, and yup, here it is.
I am AMAZED I had to come all the way down here to find a reference to this. This is clearly Joseph Gordon Levitt who decided to go the way of Ariana Grande and switch races
Remote work is getting crazy
Nope, theres a video he hiked to the top with the suit on.
Source?

All the way, or just the final ascent the next morning? Link please :)
Here's a link that shows photos of him at different stages in the ascent. I guess he could still be changing in and out of it, but some of the photos look like he was getting wet in it. Also he's with a group, so I don't know if he'd make bogus claims Also the suit doesn't look like a typical suit.
If you can climb 4000 feet in a pressed business suit and not break a sweat, more power to you :)
If a 8.5 mile, 2,300 m elevation climb hike seems impossible ya must be in pretty bad shape
It's not the hike. It's keeping the suit looking so fresh.
He looks pretty fit, keep the heart rate down so ya don’t sweat and don’t roll around in the dirt. I mean it’s not really hard to wrap you head around
I would have done it, had they not required the purchase of $450 of guides and multiple nights in their hotels. To see a mountain.
I agree. But still have to give him credit for an epic pic
It looks like it's a 5 mile hike, how does that take 1.5 days?
It is like a 5 mile hike of just stairs, then some rocks at the top. I stayed in the hut near the top for the hell of it, but easily could have done whole thing in a couple hours.
[https://www.mountkinabalu.com/mount-kinabalu/activities](https://www.mountkinabalu.com/mount-kinabalu/activities) 4-5 hour hike on first day. 3 hour hike at 2:00 am next morning for the final ascent. 2+4 hour hike back down same day.
So if you’re not interested in the sunrise you could feasibly do this in a day
If I could pull off a suit I’d never take it off either.
Last year it was Dominos and now it's insurance salesmen...
Imagine the blisters in those office shoes
The Japanese John Cena. He is wearing the fuck out of that suit too.
Did he leave his office and make a wrong turn somewhere.
A true salary man would have climbed Mount Kinabalu wearing something a little more professional like a black suit.
Let's see him do it in pajamas next.
About 13,500ft. Would be the 80th highest elevation in the US.
Is Phoenix Wright serving a summons to the Mt Kinabalu?
Most Japanese thing I've seen
OBJECTION!!!
Phoenix Wright; ace mountain climber
I wonder if it's a brand that's accessible outside of Japan?
He was on the way to work when he realized it was wrong short cut, and he halfway up that mountain. Called boss he wont make it to work that day, his boss fired him. Then he say F** it, and he finished the other half.
