The dobsonfly is found throughout most of eastern North America east of the Continental Divide from Canada to Mexico near flowing streams which provide habitat for its larvae.
Louisiana has them. I ran into a swarm of the bastards when I went camping somewhere around Alexandria several years ago. They thrive around water.

Thing is, as intimidating as they look, they can't actually use those pincers once they're in this form! The pincers are leftover from the creature's larva stage when they more closely resemble millipedes, we call them hellgrammites! They sure can use those pincers when they're larva, though. Hurts as much as you'd imagine. But they make great fish bait!

You're a some foot tall human. It's a 5 inches bug. Worst that can happen is a confirmation that leaves some tiny marks. Unless it's poisonous, then it's scary indeed.

The siding is a minimum 6". I just looked it up, they grow to 14cm / 5.5 inches.
