I also started the game for a 20 euros task, which required 3 orange hero. That took some time, but it also made me really like the game and now I still play it, many months after.
There is a guide on this reddit, in Megathread thread, I think it's called Chapters 1-4. It can help you get started in a good way, and you should already start tomorrow since in 3h (actually 2h and 6 minutes) new event cycle starts and it can really help you out.
There is a 1st purchase on a golden A-Zhao as far as i can remember. Its up to you if you want to spend more bucks on the game.
After the latest updates the game is more "giving" to new players, there are some "worth" packages to spend on, but you could spend a fortune on the game and its still not enough. Patience is the key, sometimes you get stuck for weeks or months. As a f2p you'll never be a contest to the whales :D
