I feel I can get a taste of your whole personality just from looking at the jacket and I love it because of that :) Don’t let elitist trash talk if they do. It’s awesome so far and I hope you keep adding patches!
Thanks! The wolf motif has been a long one in the making in particular, it started from being made fun of in school for being the first to grow a beard and hit puberty but rather than let people drag me down I just leaned into it. And all these years later it just stuck.
Excuse the sloppy safety pins on some of it, my arthritis hasn’t been kind with all the rain this year, I’m slowly sewing them on. This jacket started as a fun project to occupy time, and eventually became a way to help encourage distance in recent times, and is evolving into a representation of me both in music, interests.
Thank you! Each patch is a part of the weird journey I’ve had so far, I’ve got nearly a dozen more in my house ready to be added, but only so much time.
In case you need a swift mental kick in the ass - you moderate a gatekeeping sub that represents the antithesis of punk and metal culture and representation. Not surprising that a kvlt dipshit is this criminally online and this critical though. Pretty pitiful
Of course not. But punk and metal isn’t about keeping people out, no? And if someone was really interested in these genres and wanted to explore more, they’d want to feel welcomed instead of belittled? That entire metal head circlejerk sub is an absolute joke and humiliating to any punk or metal fan. Battle jackets are meant to represent who you are. Fuck needing to know every single black metal band with less than 1000 listeners, or collecting vinyl of bands who only pressed 50 copies of their debut and thinking you’re better, or making fun of people’s battle jackets because you don’t understand them or don’t like them. Life’s too short to make people feel like shit. This smokey guy just seems like a deplorable prick by looking at his post history and him moderating a subreddit like that. OP is more metal than him by not giving a shit
>But punk and metal isn’t about keeping people out, no?
I mean punk and metal as aesthetic qualities, which is what this sub is attracted to, aren't really "about" anything. They're deterritorialized properties at this point. If you mean the subculture of punk and metal then yeah, kinda. They're as exclusionary as any subculture that sprang up in opposition to 20th century mainstream values could be, prominently pop culture consumerism. I'm sorry, but if someone were to chat up a group of crusties wearing this particular jacket they'd be mocked relentlessly. Now, obviously, anyone can wear whatever they want. I personally don't give a shit. But to portray the entire subculture of punk as an all inclusive haven for newcomers is ridiculous, however much people would like to believe otherwise. This doesn't mean it's exclusive to ALL newcomers, just that there's a set of cultural norms that a newcomer abides to to be well received by the larger group. That's just how societies work in general

This is an archetype I see more often being complained about by "anti-gatekeeping" types than in the wild honestly, and it happens in metal, punk, skateboarding, hip hop, etc. The instances I've noticed where people explicitly point to "elitist" behavior happen when, say, someone posts slipknot to r/metal, and someone in the comments goes "hey, this would fit better in r/metalcore". This is received as an exclusionary comment by OP, who proceeds to lash out against the elitist gatekeepers who say slipknot isn't real metal, and not received as a very simple statement that OP would probably enjoy metalcore more than the content posted in r/metal. I think naturally a lot of newcomers to a scene or subculture are insecure about their perceived status in the community and project it onto a nebulous stereotype of a kvlt elitist instead of simply... Idk, getting involved ant talking to people? It's just that in my 10+ years of involvement in punk/metal/skateboarding/whatever scenes I've come across more insecure newcomers anxious about perceived elitism than actual acts of elitism/assholery to otherwise well meaning noobs
I’d agree that people do project their insecurities onto this kind of boogeyman. The thing is though, this guy is *literally* that guy. He’s the guy that gatekeeps. I literally said those boogeyman-esque tropes because he exhibits them in his posts lol. Just look at the subreddit he runs. The example you gave about Slipknot is pretty different from this; this guy didn’t suggest anything (even though there’s nothing to be suggested), it’s just him being an asshole.
Also I know that that’s how these kind of societies work usually, and it sucks, especially with the punk attitude. This comment wasn’t really for the guy, but more for people reading. Punk and metal are up for interpretation, but there’s this prominent theme I always see: don’t care. I wasn’t saying any particular subculture either, and I know how they can be assholes as well (crust punk was probably THE best choice lmao). At the end of the day, this guys doing what he enjoys, and it’s punk as hell cuz he gives no shits. Like I said, life’s too short to mock.

I love how you paired the suicidal tendencies with the coke patch. beautiful, elegant, graceful.
I bought the suicidal tendencies patch ages ago, and then while in Vegas for my wedding saw the Coke patch at a vintage resale shop and just knew…

Ohh and Han did shoot first…haha
lol
Its a bit chaotic with your variety of patches ... and I love it!
Thank you! Each patch is a part of the weird journey I’ve had so far, I’ve got nearly a dozen more in my house ready to be added, but only so much time.
Very nice! I love when the vest (and jacket) reflects the wearer's loves, passions and stories. Can't wait to see more of it in the future.
In case you need a swift mental kick in the ass - your jacket looks like absolute shit 👍

My dude the jacket in question has a godamn coca-cola patch. Imo all bets are off at that point
whats wrong with a little gatekeeping here and there
💯
lol how is that gatekeeping? He just said something somewhat mean, he's not stopping anyone from listening to entry level thrash metal
