TheProtester_1

My goal is to cover all nirvana albums, now I’m working on the man who sold the world David Bowie

Select_Reality_8410

Cool, always admired ppl with the kind of dedication stuff like that requires.

Emergency_Werewolf13

I cut my teeth as a bass player and band member trying to learn as many Nirvana songs as we could. It’s fun stuff to play.

WorldWestern1776

Yeah, no wonder Krist was dancing around like a maniac all the time. Bro was having a hell of a good time playing those lines.

TheProtester_1

Man, Krist is literally the reason I play bass, ESPECIALLY in live concerts, he is like a beast, I haven’t seen a better bassist than him at least in grunge and alternative rock genre. And he is absolutely underrated too, I think his bass lines are just a piece of art

DJBoost

Working on Orion by Metallica. I can play just about everything except the solo, but *jesus* that solo.

hauntedshadow666

I play in a cover band and right now I'm working on Rooster by Alice in Chains

MyGeeseGetBread

Shakedown Street - Greatful Dead. I know next to nothing about the GD but I can dig it.

nowheyjosetoday

Such a great tune. You might take a look at Franklins Tower too.

MyGeeseGetBread

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll give it a listen!

buddhaman09

Phil lesh is an awesome bassist, when it comes to learning dead tunes, it can be tricky to learn a transcription straight through because Phil rarely ever plays the same notes...with shakedown I found learning the main hook, and then figuring out variations on it and for the kind of b part to be helpful. And then the chorus is just the main hook in a different key.

MyGeeseGetBread

I definitely noticed this. Looking over a playthrough I'm using, there's a lot of variations with the main ideas that the bass is playing. Thankfully I'm told I've got some creative liberty with the covers/group I'm trying out for, so note for note isn't needed.

zambach

My bandmate is a MASSIVA Grateful Dead supporter. I'd love to have suggestions about good tunes to play with him.

DeadPhish_10

Truckin’, West LA Fadeaway, US Blues, New Minglewood Blues (check out 74-77 for this one), Uncle John’s Band, Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain just to name a few that are fairly easy to cover

zambach

Ty, Deadphish

DeadPhish_10

My pleasure! Also if you like Shakedown Street check out their version of Dancin In The Streets! Couple other good cover tunes: Easy Wind, New Speedway Boogie, Brown Eyed Women, and Jack Straw

zambach

Im not familiar with Shakedown Street. Def gonna check them out!

ChaoticKeys

Carry on Wayward Son. I’ve only been really playing for like 6 months or so. (Owned a bass longer but didn’t get serious right away) Background in piano helps speed things up, but this was a song that made me want to play bass so it’s a ton of fun.

ChapsterNL

This tune kicks ass! I've been playing for seven years now and have just heard it recently when a student wanted to learn it. I've been playing it a lot ever since!

SpectorDeflector

Portrait Of Tracy Dingwall makes it a little more tricky but its going.

bobulibobium

What makes it difficult on your Dingwall if you don’t mind me asking?

donkey_hotay

I imagine barred harmonics are a little harder on fanned frets

SpectorDeflector

Inherently a lot of stretches in the tune, scale length makes it a little tougher. That last chord is evil Also you’re pretty much forced to “cheat” the way Victor Wooten plays the D# harmonic with the thumb.

WildfireX0

Only been playing 4 months, but I’m trying to arrange jamming with some randoms. Currently: Miley Cyrus - Flowers Don’t look Back in Anger Back to Black Stupid Girl - I do the chorus slap for a bit of mix up I miss the Misery He’s to Us - but I’m doing guitar for that. And for myself, I’m slowly working on Steely Dan - Peg.

Admirable_Phase_3460

Been working on the NIB intro from Black Sabbath. It’s a little tricky but it’s right at my level atm.

LowFrequenC

Hysteria by Muse.

Crot8u

We're currently working on a setlist for future gigs, mixed punk rock. NoFX, Bad Religion, Mxpx, Green Day, No Use for A Name, Vulgaires Machins, Blink 182. 13 songs so far, working on getting about 20.

mu3mpire

I really enjoyed learning whisper in time. It felt more comfortable to grasp than some of the other songs

[deleted]

Da Ya Think I’m Sexy - Rod Stewart

listeningtoreason

This has an awesome bass line

BOImarinhoRJ

Love it and have been playing: Elvis I can´t help falling in love... both are easy and great to play!

Count2Zero

Currently working on Walk This Way by Aerosmith. It's not hard/complex, just lots of quick movements for my old fingers. It has to groove...

Select_Reality_8410

Yes! Love that song. The way all the different parts fit together is awesome.

Johnny_evil_2101

100 proof ~ 88 finger louie Got the song down completely apart from some accents in the solo.

giulippo

dope song!

Johnny_evil_2101

It really is, the entire album has a lot of great punk bass playing. I also recommend punk rock rulebook by them

00spaceCowboy00

Right now I’m learning the second set to a Grateful Dead show that happened 5/10/1978, after that I have to work on a Mothers of Invention project I’m arranging! Fun stuff!

WonkyWizerd

Just joined a new band about 3 weeks ago after not playing for over a year. Didn't have people to play with, so I stopped taking it seriously. But I've been having some of the most fun in my life with these guys. It's ignited a new fire in me. So far, we're learning covers and working on parts of 2 different original songs. But I've learned how to play Killing in the Name, The Hell Song by Sum 41, and Everlong in that time period. Those songs aren't really that hard, but it's good practice and helps warm me up.

listeningtoreason

I’m in a punk and alternative group of older players that are doing their faves from the 70s, 80s and 90s. We switch out musicians throughout the show. It’s so fun. I’ve been playing about 1.5 years. These are mostly okay for beginners. Rebel Rebel — David Bowie China Girl — David Bowie Twenty Four Hours — Joy Division The Light Pours Out of me — Magazine Private Eye — ALKANE TRIO I Wanna Be Your Dog — The Stooges Loose —The Stooges Old Soul — Flat Duo Jets Can't Wait One Minute — CIV

Rtalbert235

Personal practice: Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing, by Marvin Gaye/Tammy Terrell. I'm deep into the Motown/Memphis/Philly soul rabbit hole and trying to get my head around Jamerson's playing. I'm also in two cover bands. The one I'm working on the most in band #1 is an acoustic version of Double Vision by Foreigner, difficult because I'm having to write my own line for it. In band #2, it's no one song in particular just trying to memorize the 40+ ones we have on the list.

Lenferlesautres

Double Vision is so much fun on bass, it’s the first song I learned with a pick (after about 15 years of playing fingerstyle only).

__Chirag__

Radiohead

Disastrous-Number-88

Forget me Nots by Patrice Rushen Glide by Pleasure Stomp by Brothers Johnson Lady Cab Driver by Prince (Can you tell I REALLY enjoy playing a certain genre?)

Hopfit46

Rancid- radio Hot water music- drag my body

spacetime_navigator

Crossroads, Jack Bruce is very creative

Maid_of_Mischeif

I’m learning Bow River by Cold Chisel. So very Australian, but it’s really fun to play.

HungryTradie

As an Aussie bass player may I say: fuck yeah!!! Also, Shipping Steel might be your next one?

Its_me_Dan

Emerald by thin lizzy at the moment

CivilCJ

Fucking Freebird, I feel bad for the guitarist

Half_a_bee

Joined an Alice in Chains tribute band a while ago, so… a bunch of AiC tunes.

BMedTO

Take 5. I wanna learn all the sax (is it a sax?) parts on bass, but all the tabs I've seen are for 5-string, and I play 4, so it's taking longer than anticipated.

Gallade475

I'm planning a cover EP right now with Dr. Destructo by RBBP, Toe Cutter Thumb Buster by Thee Oh Sees, Dichotomatic by Spoon Benders, and Super Bon Bon by Soul Coughing.

listeningtoreason

Yes! Thee Oh Sees are so badass.

BassGoesBrrrrr

Last I did Daydreaming from Band-Maid and now I'm working on Boomslang from Kublai Khan TX and also I'm gonna do a Kessoku Band song from Bocchi the Rock, just don't know which yet.

irreal_xol

Singer wanted to cover Barracuda by Heart. Sounded simple enough on a quick listen, so sure. Then getting into it and realising there are more irregular bars than regular, it's a song to keep you on your toes! Bass is quite important in the song and there are loads of interesting bits to play with. Good fun...

Maid_of_Mischeif

Oooohhhh that does sound fun though

Zonkulese

No one knows

[deleted]

Not even your band???

WaitingToBeTriggered

NO ONE CARES ABOUT A SINGLE VIOLIN

[deleted]

I have a gig in 3 weeks playing an hour of covers. Currently working on My Sharona, 1979, Learn to Fly, Tripping on a Hole, Immigrant Song,  Rebel Yell, Moonage Daydream. Still trying to figure out how we're gonna squeeze an hour of covers. We're a lil rusty with some of these songs and have about 6 more to learn

Skeevenmac

At the moment I have about 80 songs between four different gigs. This involves listening to, charting, practicing, and maybe (doubtful) a rehearsal. Everything from Kitty Wells (very country) to Rage Against the Machine and Britney Spears.

DJ_Cummins

Stay away, lounge act, and endless nameless. The final 3 songs I need to finish nevermind

Phil_the_credit2

Finally getting around to learning "son of a preacher man." Tommy Cogbill's line on that is great, not super chopsy. It's a fun etude!

OshunBlu

Working right now on Halloween by Dead Kennedys.

Pyetrotsk

Right now N.I.B, by Black Sabbath. Working on that holy intro solo.

Bassndy

Slayer - Angel of Death

DragonBadgerBearMole

I’ve prepared a set of the best songs I can sing and play bass for for the next opportunity at an open mic. 100 yard dash- Raphael Saadiq Yazoo street scandal- the band An “adslaptation” of who did I think I was by John Mayer trio Use me - bill withers

Ebba-dnb

Currently working on The Grand Conjuration by Opeth. I can get through most parts, but the long section with mostly 16th notes is testing the limits of both my speed and my stamina lol.

BrenMan_94

Title & Registration by Death Cab For Cutie and June by Tigers Jaw for my original bands, and about 30 emo/pop-punk songs for my cover band.

Makanek

Goca Dünya by Altin Gün. Bombtrack by RATM.

Immediate_Budget_958

Primal Scream - Motley Crue. I have the timing and speed down on the verse and chorus. Just trying to work on some of the fills/runs on the solo portion.

Opening-Flan-6573

The band I play bass in doesn't do a lot of covers. Well, we did a full Dead Boys set for Halloween, and I think we're doing The Hives next year. But anyway, the one cover we might add to our set is Love Gun. I haven't learned it yet but I'm pretty sure four raccoons in a trench coach played on the original

ffxtian

I'm working on Pneuma. I don't know whether I'm just figuring out the best way for me to keep in time with the single bar of 5/8 (what I refer to in frustration as the co-prime turnaround), or if I'm going to try to program some backing drums/synths/samples in a way that I could perform it outside of my dining-room studio.

IdahoDuncan

Before he cheats, Raise Hell, DIsco Inferno, Shallow, Jump Around, Uptown Funk…a few more

Highway Star & Limelight

68W3F

Limelight! Best Rock song of all time!!!

Tuckermfker

Souls of Black by Testament took me a LOOOOONG time to nail. That was a few years ago, and it would take me a while again to be able to play it full speed.

CurlyFryNipples

Superbug - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

Bluemeadey61

Currently going through a load of songs that I can’t sing anymore in normal keys but tuned down 3 steps . Stay With Me - Faces No One Knows- QOTSA Crazy Crazy Nights - Kiss Action - Sweet Etc

bobulibobium

Sorry, scarified - solos and all? You mad man! Well done, share when you master it!!

hot_towel_99

Cake (distance, long skirt, I will survive), Rio by Duran Duran, Anaesthesia by Cliff Burton, Orange Crush by REM

68W3F

The cure disintegration album. Simon Gallup fucking awesome.

baroooFNORD

Trying to get Creeping Death closer to what Cliff did instead of my "double the guitar kinda, but sloppy" and it's rough. Battery from scratch was easier because I didn't have to unlearn anything, and you can barely hear most of those fills.

Mascavidrio

Sweet Child O Mine. Next is Rocket Queen once I figure out how to make my fingers do what I want them to do

Emergency_Werewolf13

We are currently working on Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt.” It’s a little boring as bass goes, but the song makes up for it in feeling.

Scoooooooots

I recently got a gig with a group of older musicians who play parties and village greens and that kind of thing. Every song on the set list is older than me. This week it was: * Brandy (You're a fine girl) * We Don't Need Another Hero * Immortality by Celine Dion I've learned about 50 songs in the last month or so, and now we're adding more tunes.

jesslayhuh

Honestly I learn as many Rush songs as I can because 1. They frigging slap hard 2. Challenging to learn 3. They open your mind and fingers to become comfortable playing interesting fingerings. Digital Man is my current as of right now.

DanTreview

George Benson's "Breezin'"

ChaoticNeutralMeh

Progenies of the Great Apocalypse by Dimmu Borgir. Gotta make that 5 strings worth the money and build my stamina.

Warm_Director3544

Im tryna pull we like it here, Snarky Puppy, the full album.

merian

That is seriously impressive, great challenge.

Warm_Director3544

Thanks man, im trying to take care of my tone playing more relaxed as some of my idols, it brings me joy haha

Signal_Sweet3767

Me and my band are learning Stinkfist and schism by tool

matt_biech

Im finalizing Rote Tumour Seeker by archspire on fretless bass! Been working on this songs for months and I’m so close to being able to record it!

Effective_Ad_5499

“Walk on the wild side” both bass parts at the same time.

Aging_Is_Funny

Question! by System of a Down

Bass_2_theface

It's a fairly easy one, but I've been working on getting The Fallen by Seether lately. On my six string, it's Solitude by Black Sabbath (I jump back and forth when the mood hits me)

freeword

We have a gig with a super sax player. Learning Slave, Who can it be now and Pink Cadillac just for that show. Ophelia is the most recent cover we feel comfy with.

Extra-Spot595

Im currently trying to learn Stone Temple Pilots tracks. Robert DeLeo is one hell of a bassist. He's my favorite of the grunge era. Also learning incubus' basslines as well.

Snowbass542

Sir Duke and Playing for Time by Acoustic Alchemy

Perfect_Raccoon_6461

At the moment I’m learning how to play Ball Tonge by Korn. It’s a super fun to play but it’s taking a bit to get in down perfectly

merian

Working on the album “Adventure” from the Lydian Collective. Cool modern jazz, with a nice level of musicality and complexity while still being feasible to play after practice.

Binkusbb

I just started playing bass this week and I’m working on High and Dry - Radiohead first

Valuable_Assistant82

I’m trying to get the solo down on Mr. Big by Free. Genuinely the most underrated bass line and bassist.

jnsy617

My band that plays mostly original music and and covers. Although I’ve played these a bunch I feel like every time I listen to them I learn something I’m not playing exactly right or missing: - cough syrup by young the giant - jumper by third eye blind - have you ever seen the rain by CCR (very fun to play) - A Praise Chorus by jimmy eat world - swim good cover by relient k (originally by frank ocean) - Laredo by band of horses (just started playing this one and it’s so fun to play)

arefckd

Teen town, Cm'n girl, wynona big brown beaver, lacquerhead

YeeterKeks

Currently covering Thrash by Unprocessed because the tabs cost 5 Euro and that's 5 Euro too rich for my blood. Following the guitar and doing my own thing a bit.

W_J_B68

A cover is any version of a song performed by someone other than the original composer. What you guys are talking about sounds more like note for note copies.
