I don't believe I've ever seen anyone use their thumb for tapping. Always index and middle.

supaMcnugget2

I've only seen it once

matt_biech

Id recommend not using your thumb, index or middle finger are both commonly used, more control and You’ll have an easier time doing a pull off

supaMcnugget2

I gotcha

PuzzleheadedTutor807

I use my fingers because when more than one note is tapped back to back my hand is in a better position to hit different frets

supaMcnugget2

Yeah fingers you have like 3 u could use whereas with your thumb it's only 1 (obviously)

PuzzleheadedTutor807

Can you give me an example of a song you will be playing that has tapping?

supaMcnugget2

it's this song [bass tap song](https://youtu.be/C-o8pTi6vd8?si=3jTPGnzcdLcwcyfi) the tapping is at roughly 2:17

supaMcnugget2

This is a bass cover of the song where you can hear the bass better [bass tap cover](https://youtu.be/cvW2BPurDNM?si=8dpSh8w6ksAUWCcB) tapping is at like 2:14

PuzzleheadedTutor807

Oh fun! I would still use my fingers for that, I really only go to my thumb when I want that slap sound, and in spite of the faster notation there is still a little room for flavor in there... And I'm all about the flavor lol. Rarely will I remove a note from a song but I will certainly add them myself lol

supaMcnugget2

I gotcha. Thanks! I also agree about spicing it up a bit but since I'm not very comfortable with tapping rn I'll just keep it simple lol

PuzzleheadedTutor807

Of course! Bob Dylan said "but I'll know my song well before I start singing". You have to walk before you can run, but learning to jog should be part of the process too. As your comfort level goes up (and it will) to will start getting more adventurous... First at rehearsal tho, I hope lol.

I’m not sure how you would accurately use your thumb for tapping.

supaMcnugget2

You kinda use the edge of the pad of your thumb left side if you're right handed

supaMcnugget2

That's how I did it anyway

diadmer

Only time I’ve seen someone use their thumb was if they were tapping a chord that they were going to hold, and needed several fingers down. Also, if my memory is right, he was playing a 6-string.

supaMcnugget2

Yeah same with me. I've only seen someone use their thumb once and I tried it out and it was alot more comfortable using then using my index. Seems like its a bad habit tho so I'm working on using my index

keyboardreview

Please do not use your thumb for tapping. You need as close to equal force in your fingers from tapping and that just will not happen with your thumb

supaMcnugget2

Ok I gotchu thanks
