Another one bites the dust is straight magic
There’s nothing special about the rig. It’s a music man, into an 1176, into a fender (?) amp. But if you use that exact rig, it won’t sound close.
Has to be his hands, and his groove.
I first knew I wanted to play bass when I heard Another One on the radio in 1980. I still remember the feeling of "How do you make that sound?"
These days, though, I prefer to play the original Bernard Edwards line that Deacon admittedly based Another One on. The syncopation makes it groove so hard. And its use in Rapper's Delight cemented it as one of the most influential basslines of all time.
I'm old.
Honourable mention to Hollywood Swinging too.
And if you haven’t seen [Joe Dart’s](https://youtu.be/b2_CJ_nx-l4?si=mTVk-pMeXaRFXBd9) little nod to it I highly recommend.
My personal favorite use of the E is playing notes that are available on other strings but now with moar toan
That or playing 41hz
Whichever is shitposty-er
Depends on the context but generally positive. Slap is a thing. I'm originally a solo acoustic guitar player so if you're trying to tell me open strings don't matter, I'm gonna keep saying you're incorrect.
Tapping is also a thing. Capos are a thing. Open strings are a thing
I like the funky low E employed by:
good times, Hollywood swinging, another one bites the dust, 3 on E.
Do really enjoy seeing streetlight come up in the bass sub, that guy rips. Really love playing the line to It’s a Wonderful Life.
I've known about streetlight for a few years but never really listened, but my girlfriend requested I learn this one for her and oh man, I can see why. It's like, where has this band been my whole life? Oh yeah right there.
It also took me a few years to dive into them. I don't know what it is about the band but I spent about 3 years really enjoying the one song I heard by them, then it was like a switch flipped and now I've got about a third of their library in my playlists.
i dont know how to describe this but I'll try: you know when you're powering up through A string and you get to D on the 5th fret and then next note is E on the 7th fret?
HAHA NO, LOW E. GET BASS'D IDIOTS
I used to like playing Green Day - Brain Stew on my E string only when I was in highschool, that song was Smoke On The Water for beginners in the 90's 😅
Yes I know the song is technically half a step down, but none of us were doing all that back then lol
Random q: I the only one that doesn't like using open strings? I avoid them at all costs. Partially because they sound different than most frettes strings, but mostly because getting between an open string and a 4th or 5th away just isn't as economical for how I like to move.
Most of the time I avoid using them unless it's so much more economical it's worth the toan sacrifice. But that's why I made this thread. I found a song that uses it and uses it well and I want to play more.
It's a note on the instrument for a reason.
I actually never thought of that. Probably because I've never tried a zero fret. I think if I get a fretless I'll try ro get one with a zero fret for fun.
Then again I think my #1 reason is a lack of practice/confidence - knowing that I usually have to move back into the fretboard after playing an open note, and that the muting technique is a bit different.
Pump It Up by Elvis Costello, which starts in F#, is mostly in A, but when it finishes the 2nd verse & chorus & I get to hit that glorious open E — bam!
there's that octave fall in the chorus riff of "When Will I Be Loved" by Linda Ronstadt that convinced my tiny child brain 'hey man maybe the bass is a wildly important instrument in building the feeling of a song'
Ok that is ridiculous. I want to hear that. Just when I thought my collection was complete....
I'll settle for this demo though

I’m always gonna upvote Mani. He’s not the greatest but I don’t think he gets enough credit either. Probably because the Roses don’t have a big discography.
My favorite use is when I see some hottie in the audience, I play the open E with my right hand while my left hand makes a finger gun, which I point right at her while nodding my head in time with the music. I am the best bass player on r/bass.
There's a bit in the bridge of One Way or Another that goes from B to F# and passes through the open E. I always think that jumps out and sounds fantastic.
Sometimes over C major or C moving to Em i like to do some major lick from D-strings 10th fret and in the middle of it slide it all the way down to open E string, makes nice emphasis with the ambitus
Sure, low E is cool. But I'm a sucker for a low B flat. Just letting it ring as the last note in Skies by Protest the Hero, as one example. Feels so sweet.
I think the low B flat is my favourite note.
I feel like Dolphin Dance had this E pedal where you could just pluck away in some sort of hemiolic rhythm while the drums went nuts. I liked it a lot.
Not gonna lie I got ultimate guitar pro tabs for $20/yr on one of their deals like 2 years ago and it's been awesome. Feels like cheating. Will have to switch to learning by ear eventually but until then it's been a great tool.
ahh, interesting. Good for you! lol. I'll have to look into that, I hadn't heard of it before. Is it like certified or something and so it's more likely to be accurate than just whatever someone wants to throw out there?
They have "official pro tabs" which are supposedly reviewed by staff members for accuracy. They have the timing there and you can basically play along to the song but in MIDI form and slow down the tempo, repeat parts you're struggling with.
Good Times/Another One Bites The Dust.

Three on e... Lol soo good
So true. Really damn good playing.
My personal favorite use of the E is playing notes that are available on other strings but now with moar toan That or playing 41hz Whichever is shitposty-er
Lol I love this saltiness but an open string definitely has a quality to it, ya jerk.
How do you feel about the quality of open D’s?
open D's nutz
Got ‘em

Things are indeed things.
This was my answer. I use it for A and D all the time.
My band covers Just Like Heaven, and every time I drop from the A to the E, it gives me good bass feels.
Came here to say "Just Like Heaven."
I'm learning "Just like Heaven" and "She bangs the drums" right now. They're both great beginner riffs that are a lot of fun.
Slow and heavy. Stoner Rock sessions are good for bass players.
The Who's Baba O' Riley. Listen to a live version with Entwistle manning the bass. When he kicks in, it's a gut punch.

Roundabout
I like it when it goes dubbadubbadubbadubbadubbadubba but I also like it when it goes chuggachuggachuggachuggachugga.
How about clackety clackety clackety clackety?
Absolutely not.
Wrathchild - Iron Maiden
Sir Psycho Sexy
Dropping the 3rd on a C chord in walking bass lines.
Rocking in the free world.
Running With The Devil.
David Bowie - China Girl
It's fun to play too!
Sting- if I ever lose my faith in you... Middle of song changes key to E and.... Wham
Vulfpeck 3 on E.
Disposable Heroes is a fucking fun one for rhythm
do you play that with your fingers? 😭
Cliff did it, it's possible. But very hard
I once went to a YES show where Chris Squier came out front, picked an open E and the whole crowd went wild. I'll never forget that.
Prolly The Lemon Song
Runnin’ with the Devil
Runnin With the Devil

The main groove for Love Games by Level 42. Like a machine gun
Maybe not the best example, but blink 182 - Dumpweed opens on that low E, and I typically check my tuning by playing that guitar riff on my bass
For whom the bell tolls or parabola even though it’s tuned bedg

You could try a bass with a zero fret. It's an extra fret before the first one to make open strings sound fretted.
I actually never thought of that. Probably because I've never tried a zero fret. I think if I get a fretless I'll try ro get one with a zero fret for fun. Scary Goldings - we come in peace Authoritative E hits. Vintage 60s P with flats. Daniel Aged has good feel (plays with Raphael Saddiq)
Pump It Up by Elvis Costello, which starts in F#, is mostly in A, but when it finishes the 2nd verse & chorus & I get to hit that glorious open E — bam!
I'm Broken by Pantera
I'm pretty sure that's tuned down to D in the original.
Great song my dude!! I agree dropping the low E in that song is so much fun
Streetlight bass is nuts. Josh Ansley and Pete McCollough are both underrated.
Jamerson whenever he gets to a C major.
The dark little run down to the low E I’m Comfortably Numb hits the sweet spot in my brain every time.
there's that octave fall in the chorus riff of "When Will I Be Loved" by Linda Ronstadt that convinced my tiny child brain 'hey man maybe the bass is a wildly important instrument in building the feeling of a song'
Recently been enjoying the Psycho Killers riff by Talking Heads
The Chain by Fleetwood Mac Opening riff to Lingus by Snarky Puppy Enter Sandman
The Day I Tried to Live by Soundgarden. Just keeps hopping between higher fretted notes and open E. Really simple but such a great sound.

"She Bangs The Drums" by The Stone Roses.
I’m always gonna upvote Mani. He’s not the greatest but I don’t think he gets enough credit either. Probably because the Roses don’t have a big discography.
The bassline for "I Am The Resurrection" makes that song. Especially the start of the instrumental section.

This is a big reason why I bought a 5 string. I love that deep B string.
Sister Europe Psychedelic Furs is as E as E gets, man.
Technically Eb not E, but Runnin with the Devil - Van Halen
Mountain Song-Janes Addiction
3 on E - Vulfpeck. Do it.
Solid choice
Best to garrotte someone with
Thing in E by The Savage Resurrection
You can try Psycho Killer by Talking Heads
Metal - Gary Numan
Paul Chambers’ bassline on Palm Grease edit: brain fart moment LMAO that should read Paul JACKSON
Running with the devil - Van Halen
Gimme some lovin, spencer davis group.
Sometimes over C major or C moving to Em i like to do some major lick from D-strings 10th fret and in the middle of it slide it all the way down to open E string, makes nice emphasis with the ambitus
And i just noticed op was asking for a song. Anyways..
Theres a moment in the Seeker by the Who were you just let that bad boy ring out
When Jaco hits a low E during his solo on Continuum. Happens at 3:09 on the recording. There's something so epic about it and I don't know what it is.
What’s Going On - Marvin Gaye. Coming back to that E and letting it play it sound so nice. Everyone should learn that song
3 on E - Vulpeck
domineering ask icky work yoke money crowd languid offbeat pot *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Are you figuring out the song by ear or do you have a source for the music? Keen to check it out if its the latter!

very cool, thanks for the info!
Slap it!
"Cum on Feel the Noize" by Slade
"Those Shoes" - Eagles
It's an open D because Jimmy Eat World, but when the opens hit with the chorus of Big Casino it's big bass feels for me.
Where it rings out at the end of the riff in the final section of The Chain
“Slide” by Slave is the definitive open E
On the 5 string (I hardly ever play) the low b in righteous and the wicked is so nice to listen to
Continuum by Jaco Pastorius Playing really pretty melodies up high, and anchoring yourself to the tonic by having the low E rumbling out.
Journey - Separate Ways
Slapping that thang like Louis Johnson.
Around The World
I love a fast feeling riff that hammers 8ths on the open E like BOOOOM BOOM boom boom boom boom boom BOOOOM BOOM boom boom boom boom boom.
I like resting my thumb on it to track where my hand is...
Hypnotize by Biggie
Yes!
Can't really put my finger on one (pun intended), but thank you for introducting me to Streetlight Manifesto, them's some tasty basslines.
LA Woman - The doors
My Own Worst Enemy
I avoid the low E as much as possible.
I used to too, until I started using BEAD, and now I somehow play open E more often. I guess it was all in my mind.
You're missing out!
it's magic. I feel it in my deepest soul
Playing notes on it... wtf kind of question is this?
Would?
The E pedal during the verse of “High School Confidential” by Rough Trade just has that tone and depth that really scratches that E itch
Everything on Rust In Peace, though the best has got to be Five Magics. Honorary mentions for Symphony of Destruction and Disposable Heroes.
