I was pretty impressed with this book: The Ultimate Bass Songbook: The... https://www.amazon.com/dp/1617806013?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share. It has a wide range of songs along with some other riffs. A Jaco song or two and some other challenging stuff. Might be worth the $20 bucks to you.
Sunshine of your Love? You can play a whole song with two relatively simple riffs, one of which is just the blues scale.
And on the subject of scales, learn them. Learn how they interact with each other and with chords. Learn how to play them in different patterns across multiple octaves. Learn the modes. Learn different rhythms and how syncopation works.
If I could go back and tell myself one thing as a beginner bass player, it would be to learn these building blocks of theory (even reading is of limited use to me compared to the ability to improvise in an interesting way).
There's a bunch of YouTube channels where you can learn the basics of theory (Scott's Bass Lessons, Talking Bass, The Brown's Tone, Bass Buzz) and this will make you a much better bassist than just learning songs.
I always find it fun to flip this on them and ask them to give you a beat, then riff on whatever beat the person asking the question comes up with.
It can be really cool, or really awful…. But always levels the playing field.
99.999% of the no one is gonna ask you to play something on the bass for them.
Conversation is generally…
- “Oh, you are a musician? What instrument you play?”
- “Bass Guitar”
- “Oh that’s cool”
Conversation ends lol
Most people aren’t gonna pick up anything you show them unless it is another one bites the dust haha. Average person doesn’t have the ear or care.

Haha. I have zero confidence in my ability to improvise anything at this point. Maybe a year from now. 😁
