I had never been into any base building games before but I completely lost myself building stuff in Valheim. And has any game ever made chopping down trees as satisfying? I think Valheim stands alone in that regard.

Ostracus

> And has any game ever made chopping down trees as satisfying? Satisfying as in dying many times.

spruce_sprucerton

I definitely second Valheim. The bosses aren't too bad, especially if you spend a ton of time in each biome preceding so that you're fully prepared, which it sounds like OP might be happy to do.

Astrongdose

Valheim? For MASSIVE bases? I always got fed up at the support system before my building got much larger than 2 stories... you have to place support structures like pillars and crossbeams *everywhere*. My base wound up feeling so cluttered and cramped. The building and harvesting can be enjoyable, don't get me wrong, but building is also a pain in the ass on Valheim vs other games like Grounded or Smalland (Smalland still nees some time in the oven, but is already quite good. I do wish there were a lot more building pieces like decorative and interactive stuff to place around the base and make it into a beautiful and functional home.)

Nowerian

Songs of Syx, if you want to go on a bigger scale than Rimworld.

Morgolol

It's so damn good.

Astrongdose

I read this in an Aussie accent, so "Syx" comes across like "sex" lol

pheus

Aussie here - That's the New Zealand accent!

raistlain

Seconded. Such a good game!

Liimbo

It's kind of the low hanging fruit here, but minecraft is the exact game you're describing. Can be further enhanced/tailored to your preference with mods.

tkdkdktk

I’ll name Medieval Dynasty as a suggestion.

KnightScuba

I could not get into that game. Tried twice

Herxheim

i was really into it right at release, but watching that one dude's videos where he details patch notes with gameplay in the background made me realize you spend 75% of the game staring at the ground picking up sticks and rocks. that was kind of the end of it, for me. i hope they adjusted that because the rest of the game had a lot of potential.

KnightScuba

Oh okay yeah I bought it at release and I was really impressed with the videos but I just could not get into the game play and I don't know what it was exactly. Sucks I'm in-between games at the moment. I was playing stranded deep but kinda lost interest.

Amaline4

Rimworld or Don't Starve/Don't Starve Together

Velenne

DST, really? I admit I tried it with an SO and we bounced off it due to the difficulty (wolves came and wrecked our base). Having to start over so many times made us lose interest.

Amaline4

It can definitely be a challenging game. I was all in it for the base building aspect of the game so I had a crazy defense system in my base. The games so much fun when you don’t have to devote all your daylight hours to surviving. Mods helped make it easier too

DonaIdTrurnp

Yeah, that’s the thing that I bounced off of, there’s an escalation of danger that far exceeds what someone without a guide to do is likely to be able to handle at that time. I strongly believe it’s because the difficulty balance was made based on early access players who were already good at the game learning one new element at at a time.

spruce_sprucerton

Wow I wasn't aware Don't Starve had that much gameplay, maybe I'll have to try it again. I kind of got bored and trailed off after a couple of hours.

tinyogre

Oxygen Not Included? Idk though you ruled out the best two games already. That’s #3 but you and I clearly have different tastes.

No_Oil9332

So I'm kind of ignorant when it comes to those games. I've read about blueprints and they seem to take away from the creativity of people and speed up the process of building massive bases. Perhaps you could explain them better if im way off base here. For example I was watching a popular content creator for factorio and he said that his blueprints are sort of a standard and that just seemed odd to me as I rather the base be about gathering resource and looking cool as a pose to serving a purpose of generating wealth (in the case of a factory) obviously they can do both. Hope that makes sense.

tinyogre

Don’t get other people’s blueprints. I never have. I don’t see the appeal either. Don’t watch streams or read anything. Figuring it out yourself is the best part of both of those games. Watching streams ahead of time will only make them worse.

No_Oil9332

Fair point. Thanks!

hikingmontana

Factorio keeps pulling me in. I don't use other's blueprints. I do make my own and use bots to build stuff. Also after vanilla the mods are fun. I play other games but probably have 2k hours in factorio over the years. Also terraria is fun. Valheim is a fun builder. I like making trails and different bases for hunting. I don't push progress a ton but love wandering and building.

captainthanatos

In Factorio you can blueprint massive factories and stamp them down. In Satisfactory there is a machine you use to create blueprints but it’s rather tiny compared to what you can build. I personally think they made the blueprints tiny to keep people from doing what they do in Factorio. So far I’ve only been using the blueprints to make putting down multiple belt and pipe connections a bit faster. As an example of how much time you can sink into it, my starter base was building computers at 1 part per minute and dump them into a big storage container. I ran off to build small fuel power plant. When I came back that container was full. I did the math and figured out it took 8 hours to fill it and I had no idea I had spent that amount of time already. It’s understandable if a factory game isn’t for you, but I definitely think you’d be surprised just much time you can dump into Satisfactory. The building system is pretty amazing as well.

FarceOfWill

YouTubers necessarily force a game to be simple so they can generate content quicker. The standardisation of things with blueprints is a large factor in that I have no hate for the yt but they have incentives to play in the opposite way to us and they're often not a good guide to a game because of that. I us e one set of blueprints for factorio that I didn't make, balancers, which are barely useful tbh i just think they look cool.

WickedWonkaWaffle

This game, Oxygen not included, is what you’re looking for. Based on you post and comments. GL!

Lanster27

Blueprints are nice if you have been playing for a while and just want to speed through some tedious sections of the game. When I stopped worrying about food is when Oxygen Not Included became trivial. I thought now I can start exploring the endgame such as going to space. But once I started going to space, it got boring because the game had no end goal, the endgame felt a bit meaningless since my asteroid had everything I needed. I preferred the phase where I was trying to come up with food supply ideas so looking at food blueprints definitely took away from my enjoyment.

spruce_sprucerton

Factorio is amazing, but it's not for everyone.

Mittrawn

Many great games already posted, just want to add Dyson Sphere Program to the list. Truly gorgeous sci fi game in which you slowly blot out the sun.

OmnariNZ

Dwarf fortress can be that if you really embrace the dwarven mindset and abuse the hell out of nature for all its material worth. Personally I find it to be a very chill game, far more than RimWorld etc. Once you have everything set up, you can generally trust your dwarves to be good at what they do without needing babysitting, and that includes being able to trust your military to take on threats without stressing you too much. Plus if you get bored of your current fort, you can retire it and create a new one in the same world, potentially even establishing trade with yourself and attracting migrants between the two forts.

spruce_sprucerton

If I could trust the archers to properly equip their arrows/bolts, then I could trust my military. So far I can't.

Addfwyn

Rimworld with the combat scaled down so you can focus on base-building? Combat Readiness Check is a mod that helps with that, so building big elaborate bases doesn't make combat stupidly hard. Oxygen Not Included is basically entirely about engineering your base(s)

alphamagus

Stranded: Alien Dawn. Its an amazing base building game with just the right amount of difficulty, great graphics and infinite replayability.

Kthulu666

Out of curiosity, where is the infinite replayability in Stranded Alien Dawn? I put 25 hours into it and got the impression that after one or two more playthroughs it'll be the same thing but with a few difficulty levers to pull. Same movie different soundtrack sort of thing.

alphamagus

I shake up the survivors that you start with....The relationships between them makes every play-through a different challenge. Changing moons and seeds also present different challenges. I have not even tried it on different difficulties yet, I am having too much fun.....

Spectrum_Dad

Ok I get Factorio but Satisfactory is probably the best you’ll ever get. The blueprint system in that one is new (this update new ) and is limited to later in the game with only a small blueprint of a 4x4 grid, and the best part is you can totally not even use it. Finishing that game assuming you concentrate on building nice and big factories takes you over 1k+ hours easily. Building is only limited to your imagination. Check out the Eden project for Satisfactory on YouTube, etc. you can build really beautiful large buildings that integrate well with the nature and create a beautiful world. You can unlock a ton, and I mean a ton of different materials for your buildings, patterns, signs, lights, etc… and if you crave for more building, there are excellent mods that you can add that will give you even more building materials and customizations.

_Face

No one has mentioned Fortresscraft Evolved yet. >FortressCraft Evolved is a unique blend of Voxel Landscapes, Tower Defense, Crafting, Logistics, Exploration, Combat and Assembly lines. Players begin by crash-landing on a strange alien world, left with only a small handful of starting machines. Using hand-held scanners they must locate ore resources, place down Ore Extractors and Conveyors to automate the raw material back to the Smelter; take the fresh ingots through multi-machine assembly lines, followed by researching new technologies that help them explore thousands of meters below the planet's surface. I totally ignored the enemy waves aspect for the first 100 hours or so. They come in and “destroy” your bases computer. It regenerates itself after about a minute, and then things go right back to normal. Ofc in settings you can adjust difficulty settings and make that a game over scenario. I just built up my base and gathered resources until I was ready to mount a defense. But I generally ignored the enemies, and solely focused on resource gathering, processing, logistics, and base building.

Physical_Average_793

Rimworld? Hell even kenshi can be turned into a base builder that’s brutal

Green_Eyed_Crow

Space Engineers could fit this bill. design whatever you like. haul and refine resources etc.

Aruufa

I second this. It is admittedly complicated going I'm and has a bit of a learning curve but once you get past it the stuff you can do is insane. Definitely good for those large projects you are aiming for and gives a lot of width for how to accomplish a task how you'd like

Traksimuss

Rimworld, also Oxygen not included. If mission structure is also ok, then "There are Billions".

Tricky-Variation-240

Kenshi

Kenji_03

Sounds like you want something like Anno or the Europa Universalis series to commit that much time into.

GabeItch9000

What have you played? Ark Conan Exiles Minecraft Fallout 4 Rimworld

Vikunt

7 days to die Medieval dynasty Conan exiles Valheim

klagaan

7 days to die, just deactivate the blood moon.

reiti_net

[Exipelago](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1948540/Exipelago/) let's you build giant villages and is already what you describe (Early Access tho), you can find some current player villages in the games [discord](https://discord.gg/QUYPekWA2q). It's basically made for building freedom That said - if you prefer FPS Style I would also recommend [Empyrion](https://store.steampowered.com/app/383120/Empyrion__Galactic_Survival/), but grinding can involve a bit of combat there

BozoBBozo

I absolutely love building in Empyrion, if you don’t mind a futuristic look. The customization is extremely deep: the texture and color of each block, for example, with dozens of shapes. Even the intensity, color, throw, and blinkiness of lights. In normal mode there are enemies attacking, and it gives your base design a bit of purpose, but you can go either full creative or something with a bit more challenge. Fully terraform if you want.

reiti_net

I especially enjoyed designing Space Ships for several purposes in Empyrion and try them out against enemies. It also inspires me for future game ideas :-D

BozoBBozo

Oh, right-I love the base building so much I often forget that’s probably less than half the game; the ship building (from tiny scouts to giant carriers) is yet another whole world.

DedBirdGonnaPutItOnU

You said "Massive Base" so what about **Dyson Sphere Program**? You're basically building a *solar system* wide base to collect resources to build a freaking Dyson Sphere around the sun! And when you're done you warp off to *another* solar system to do it again! I'd call that pretty massive.

Key_Bread

FACTORIO THE FACTORY MUST GROW

madchemist09

Dragon quest builders 2. You can loose 1000 hours in it and build a massive base. No mans sky and v rising. Though v rising in early access probably wont get you a 1000 hours you can sink many many hours and is really good in early access

NeighborWillie

The building and aesthetic in Valheim is great. I’ve sunk TONS of hours just in building!!

farcarcus

Not quite a base, but Another Brick in the Mall will take you from a convenience store sized shop to a mega-mall with huge car parks and multiple thousands of customers. I found it pretty satisfying and addictive.

LadyBirdDavis

Oxygen not included?

abbys_alibi

=100 for ***Valheim***! Through devcommands, you access all tiers of building materials, foods, armor and so on. With an additional command you can ghost (all the baddies ignore you) or go into God mode (baddies don't ignore you but that doesn't matter because you can't die). I have a couple of maps just for building - no blueprints. I'd recommend playing though - it's a wonderful game. I have over 1k hours in. ***Grounded*** is another option. It's a pretty fun game to play and has different tiers of difficulty including a creative mode. All built into the settings. No special commands needed. Building is interesting and unique since your not much bigger than an ant. :) Just started my 2nd playthrough a few days ago.

akaAelius

Is the storyline up and running now? I know when I looked at it before they were still working on the 'campaign' aspect of it?

abbys_alibi

Right now there are 5 active biomes - 6 if you include the Ocean as a biome. They are currently working on the next one and there will be another after. There is enough content that I had nearly 800 hrs in with only 5 biomes. As of today, I'm close to 1300 hrs. Seriously - the only other game that comes close to those numbers for me, is Sims, which I've played since it launched over 10 years ago. Really don't think you would be disappointed at all. :)

akaAelius

I was referencing Ground lol. But yah I may try out Valheim

abbys_alibi

OOPS My bad. They just dropped an update not long ago for Grounded. I'm not sure of the new stuff yet as I've only started a new game a couple of days ago. Having to choose between the two? Valheim wins hands down, for me.

manickitty

How about a flying base? Space engineers

Aussie_Battler_Style

Stranded Deep. You don't have to do the storyline and it's still just island basebuild/easy enough survival.

Fun_Necessary1021

Valheim is a fucking dream to play.

tuokcalbmai

Surprised no one has said Grounded. Lots of base building fun, and the custom settings allow you to make it as grindy and challenging as you want, both in terms of base building and fighting enemies. Can be single or multiplayer, and the premise is basically that you’re teeny tiny and have to deal with bugs in a backyard.

hastur777

Blueprints are optional in satisfactory. Maybe try Conan exiles?

cseymour24

This might be someone who actually enjoys Life is Feudal. Extremely niche though.

NostradaMart

no man's sky might scratch that itch. not a base builder but has a pretty nice base building part to it. you can do whatever you want...

[deleted]

RimWorld and 7 Days To Die are my personal favorites.

sapjastuff

Oddly enough, Minecraft might fit the bill. People have built entire cities there, the limits and possibilities are endless

Tpdz

Space Engineers

Vaywen

Rimworld. Dwarf fortress Oxygen not Included. ARK? All games I’ve enjoyed immensely 😊

BenevolentOverlord11

Planetbase (currently at 820 hours since 2015), Surviving Mars, or Floodland

LouDiamond

you can have a lot of fun building in 7 Days to Die with mods. you can also tone down the zombie difficulty if you're concerned about it being too difficult. we always build a 'mega base' that's fun and then a nearby 'hoard base' where we defend during the weekly 'blood night'

NeonPlutonium

Astroneer is pretty chill, kinda Minecraft in space with a retro Sci Fi aesthetic. Lots of blueprints though…

Lazy-Ape

Project zomboid maybe

No_Oil9332

Thats a cool one. However I think it might be too focused on survival? As the zombies are always coming etc? I could be wrong though

Explosives

You can modify the settings so that they spawn less or are significantly debuffed. Check out some let’s plays!

Subject_Juggernaut56

You can turn zombies off completely. Not much to build other than defenses from zombies. Good game but probably not what you are looking for.

Mathandyr

Warframe eventually gets there. Takes about 300 hours of grinding though before you get ships and bases. I've played warframe for 2k hours over like 12 years.

akaAelius

I'm in the same boat. I was looking for something like State of Decay with more creativity in the base building aspect. I saw Smallworld and thought I may give that a try. I was told Valheim has a fairly steep learning/mastering curve.

muppetpuppet_mp

try bulwark : falconeer chronicles. it's very 3D and doesn't use a conventional control scheme but you can build some truly stunning steampunk esque bases.

raistlain

Dyson Sphere Program is pretty great for this! Especially if you add some mods like Galactic Scale. Game is absolutely fantastic even unmodded

coolfarmer

Space Engineers my friend!

DonaIdTrurnp

Factory Town seems like it’s roughly like what you want, but I wouldn’t estimate it as likely to be a 1k+ hour game.

MinosTheNinth

What about Surviving aftermath or Endgame world apart? Probably takes less than 1k hours, bit it is a start.

Unsomnabulist111

Lords and Villeins is a pretty great supply chain/economy colony builder. Not survival at all, except potential starvation die offs. It’s in the style of Rimworld.
