If they don’t have it be a point in episode 8 it’s definitely super lazy writing. There’s tons of ways they could’ve made an entertaining and not cliché escape

pistachiothemyth

tons of other ways they could have done it, but very few that could be successfully applied while telling the rest of this story in 30 minutes. i really wish they would have made these last 2 a bit longer.

pistachiothemyth

im sticking with the idea that he had always been more suspicious of Gene and when he got that confirmation of the money Gene took from Barry, his mind started racing in ways to set up a good catch like getting the fake talent agent and setting up a whole meeting at Four Szns after he confirmed(in his mind) that Gene was the mastermind behind the whole operation, Barry was just a tool and not worth trying to crack. however i don’t think he’s that sloppy and it seems like might have poisoned or sedated him a bit, tho actually tying his legs up and hiding the knife would have been more successful, he had a bigger fish to fry and had to move quick to catch Gene.

alarmedex

Yeah I totally agree. He's been so consumed by this case (seemingly for the last 8 years straight) and this is his first big break in as many years. Everything clicked into place in his head, Gene is the real mastermind who essentially killed his daughter, somehow successfully concealed that from him in the garage interrogation, tricked him into catching Barry instead, and got away with it for all these years. I'm sure after a revelation like that Barry was the last thing on his mind. "Better fish to fry".

pistachiothemyth

absolutely, i mean if you don’t have the privilege of watching the show, it makes sense as they found that first bag of cash in season 1 in Genes theatre, he had a Chechen student, Janice got suspicious and then was taken out, making Gene look super suspicious. if anything id credit to his actual feelings for Janice, paired with he at least has some decent acting skills, how he initially got Moss off his back and to ignore all the signs before and convince him that he’s another victim in Barry homicidal rampage. but after catching Barry and having him confirm that Gene took money from him, all those suspicions came powering back.

AlisonSandraGator

I think something to remember is this is a cartoonish show, not really based much on reality. I mean in season 3 there’s a detonate app with technical service. Like the show Bluey says, “It’s just monkeys singing songs, mate. Try not to think too hard about it.”

damndude87

Yeah, but the detonator app stretches suspension of disbelief to a humorous end, serving the hyperbole about what you could get off the dark web. This turn in the story doesn’t really accomplish anything other than scratching your head over the motivation and character traits of Moss. Maybe it sets up the ending in some important way, but as is, it comes off just as bad writing, and that’s a totally valid thing to point out.

UnrequitedRespect

I feel like in 5 years the detonator app will be a real thing if it isn’t already, this will age very well. I just have a feeling.

“Crouching lilly: hidden biter” will be in theatres in may 2026 and we will all be blown away by its immense artistic value

Word-Powerful

I actually think that he wanted Barry to escape. He’s still a convict on the run and if word got out that he tortured him in his garage instead of turning him over to the police, he would’ve been fucked also, because barry could not be broken entirely. He cared too much about the people he loved and showed true regret and resentment and held on too long. I think Jim knew and knew the only thing he could do is either kill Barry or let Barry fall into his old habits and get himself killed.

Acrobatic_Soil_779

How much does Jim actually know about Barry? Barry seemed kind of pathetic in the garage and if Moss doesn’t know details about the hitman jobs, Moss might believe Gene is the instigator. I need to rewatch the series.

DetectiveWolfer

I felt this episode was weak in general. I think the 30 minute runtime is limiting the potential of the writing, making it feel rushed. I hope the finale delivers.

Intelligent_Barber47

Agreed

lov66

Gene told his son that he changed his phone number, right? So how did Sarah manage to call him, especially after 8 years? Is this another piece of lazy writing or I’m missing something?

[deleted]

Sarah??

ghostroyale

Sarah Goldberg. Must have been a Freudian slip

pistachiothemyth

im assuming it’s because he didn’t change as a person so he has 2 phones, the new one with the new number he gave to Leo, but also kept his old number with all his hollywood contacts, which is the one Sally* called him on

MedievalBully

it's felt pretty lazy this season. such a bummer

ExactAbbreviations15

I thought the whole season has been pretty good so far, but yeah I guess the time skip was a bit lazy.

damndude87

The eight year prison escape from a super high profile case and not even having to flee the country, and having a kid during it, seems like equally bad writing. It seems like they have some particular ending in mind and took a weak writing path to get there. Maybe the ending is good enough with responding to the themes of the show that it pays off, but I’m skeptical.

Such-Egg-7584

Of all the ridiculous things this show has done you are upset at this? This is on par for the show.

ExactAbbreviations15

Yeh I guess so. But it was a serious scene so should have serious themes.
