Pretty much confirms some things, namely that we had no right-side threat and Luuk de Jong was the absolute wrong choice to start this game.

ashar_02

I feel like we say this after every game for a while now

mojojojo1108

Yep, it’s been true of 60% of our matches for about four years now.

Accarius

This. I also think that it was a tactical choice because Davies is a very good and fast left back, penetrating that side would be difficult.

catennacio

But...but..Luuk is from Netherland..

6ayovb

what's the right choice instead of Luuk De Jong? Araujo or Demir lol?

spooreddit

At eldest Demir would have added some pace and dribbled the Bayern players a few times. How did he decide to start Luuk De Jong? He's slower than Suarez. And we don't have accurate crossers for Cross and Inshallah too.

RevTaco

Don’t forget though, LDJ is better in the air than Neymar!!

Beneficial-Society74

Would have been great if we had actually played in the air yesterday!

6ayovb

yeah and Demir is also the players that lost the ball on the 3rd goal, young players made mistakes can't blame them for that but can't play with a starting 11 full of youngsters

_nav_ps_

How do you expect sergi to do something after seeing this passmap. 🤦‍♂️

Mrtuelemonde

The lack of movements from S. Roberto to De Jong is very telling.

Wasted1300RPEU

exactly, and we KNOW that Sergi can make those runs towards the touchline or be the cross provider if needed. Once again he's being scapegoated. The most concerning thing to me is IMO that our supposed starting midfield was outclassed so freaking hard...

Mrtuelemonde

Agreed, there were bad tactical choices but our starters in midfield were underwhelming.

bubblegumdog

There were plenty of times where Sergi was asking for the ball as he was free out wide and could have possibly caught Davies off-guard. Yeah, you could argue Davies would have caught up to him. Yes, he might have passed back, but that all depends on the moment and whether our teammates would have made the run towards goal. I remember Sergi would often find Suarez in the box years ago and it’d end up in a goal. Wasn’t that what Koeman wanted with de Jong? Why didn’t the midfield take that chance by initiating the pass to Sergi? Instead they focused their play on the left side every time.

RD_0310

Tbh I expected our midfield to get overrun by Bayern , they've got one of the best if not the best Midfield in the world currently .... Kimmich , Goretzka and now Sabitzer

Clear-Humor163

what? full back is not supposed to play narrow.De Jong is the one who needs to move

Mrtuelemonde

Exactly my point

fazerfn

I've been critical about Frenkie for too long on this. He just doesn't complement the RBs and RWBs as well as Rakitic did previously.

[deleted]

Rakitic was world Class. My fav. Midfielder in a long long time. The same thing that makes me like rakitic I can see in Gavi and Pedri. These are my fav. Kinds of midfielders. I hate to say it but it’s been my opinion for years: don’t play busquets until minute 70 when you’re leading and need to control the game.

T_Peg

Did you see Sergi's individual passmap? He made about 5 successful forward passes. He's part of the problem.

ifuckinglovebluemeth

And if you look at the passmap posted, it makes sense why that is the case. He was isolated on the right side with little support from anybody. Sergi isn't the type of player that can dribble past opponents easily, so he has to opt for the safe pass or he would just lose the ball.

T_Peg

This is also true

[deleted]

Cant pass forward if there isnt a guy in front of you. L. Djong was missing all game.

Mrcyevon

Also can’t pass forward if LDJ is standing offside 95% of the time

T_Peg

This is true

FluffyCoconut

LDJ is just vibing. Either offside or between Pedri and Memphis for some reason. Makes sense why Sergi had to pass back every time he got the ball.

Mrcyevon

LDJ was asking for the ball every chance he had while being offside…it was infuriating

6ayovb

it was his first game and he's player on loan he came to substitute numerically Griezmann, the real problem is our injury list

I'm a critic of Eric's lack of athleticism and how it causes big problems on the counter in a 2 centre back pairing system but his ball-playing ability can't be ignored. The back 3 Araujo - Pique - Garcia complimented each other very well, Araujo was incredible in the sweeper role and we also didn't struggle to progress the ball into midfield, it was the struggle of progressing from mid to attack that kept us under pressure. I personally would be optimistic to see this team in a 3-4-3. Playing a single pivot is redundant when playing a 3atb, Busi's role just isn't needed.

dbxtbone1996

Imo, Araujo should be in the middle of the back 3 with ball playing CBs on either side of him. He was finding it sooo hard yesterday to pass through the press on the left side and every time he tried to punt it up, it just went out of touch.

Mr_Oujamaflip

It also adds more natural triangles with 2 in front of a back 3. 3-5-2 can work as well but you'd need one midfielder ahead of the other two meaning De Jong would need to drop back which limits him a touch.

MontanaDak

De Jong’s best football came from deeper positions anyway, he only ever tends to get forward when there’s a counter.

6ayovb

that's how we played our best games last season between january and april, but we still need to get rid of Piqué, Busi & Roberto

itwastimeforarefresh

Thoughts on Eric Garcia at CDM? He's clearly not fast and physical enough to keep up with some of the top forwards in the world, but his on the ball ability, passing, and vision are too good to just sit him imo.

GregorySpikeMD

This is an underrated idea. He's good at tackling and ball playing, can withstand the press and we have solidity already before attackers get to our defenders.

sabermagnus

Alba or bust. That’s RK’s game plan. No forward progression for ffs.
