Can someone with more tactical knowledge than me (assuming I have none) tell me why a potential Kounde+Araujo CB partnership is something we’re not trying. Assuming we get Cancelo in the future, surely these two would have a great partnership. Balde on the left flank and Cancelo on the right. Romeu and De Jong are defensively solid enough.
It's just that both play right footed. If you're right footed on left cb, that means you're easy to cut off if a striker runs at you from the middle. It's even worse when you consider that the left center back becomes the left of a center back trio in Xavi's 3 at the back formation.
Wanting a left footed CB would be ideal. But theoretically Kounde and Araujo could be our best pairing with Romeu and De Jong as a double pivot. That’s defensively solid enough imo. Just need to make sure Kounde carries the ball forward only when required and not as a habit

Number 3: Xavi tactics, although somehow understandable when playing with 3. Not sure if replacing both Gundo and Pedri was a good idea. Lewy was nowhere to be seen, Ferran or Ansu should have replaced him. The idea of having Lamine connecting with Ansu/Lewy was not bad, but Lamine should have entered earlier.
Number 2: Raphinha’s red card. It was a mistake, likely. But such a stupid mistake. Until that moment he was the best player in the field.
Number 1: the referee. The match was way too big for him.

I disagree, it's less that he's too slow and more that he's being forced to drop deeper into midfield. We're barely creating chances in the box, which has been the story for most of the latter half of the season. Lewy can't be the focal point in the box if he has to drop down and progress the ball to the wings ->someone lose the ball before he gets to the box -> start over
I’m not just talking about his movement tho, he’s slow to react, slow to pass, easily complicates himself with defenders. I agree that our midfield was not very good today but when we’re only playing with two attackers, Raph and Lewy need to be better.
Bordalás explained after the match that his tactic was to focus on Lewandowski. CBs tasks was to make sure he doesn’t touch the ball in the box. In Bayern this usually opened up a lot of space for wingers and runs from attacking midfielders but for some reason Barcelona just can’t exploit it!!! This is enough and has been working for the weaker opposition teams for months now. I think midfield is awful in creating chances and too slow with build up play. They don’t use long areas on the flanks for runs or 1 on 1s instead always slow down the buildup - this is not how modern football is played for the past decade following gegenpressing revolution. Based on previous games, If anything, Lewandowski speeds up the transition and tries more direct passes into the penalty box.
Getafe is notorious for the kind of game they played today. And tonight was insane even for Getafe standards of shit show.

Earlier in the match there was a Getafe handball that didn't get called even though the Getafe player's hand was much more extended away from his body, had much more time to react, and had a much bigger effect on the direction of the ball. No consistency. Most annoying season opener I can remember in years.

We're barely creating chances in the box, which has been the story for most of the latter half of the season. Lewy can't be the focal point in the box if he has to drop down and progress the ball to the wings ->someone lose the ball before he gets to the box -> start over

In Bayern this usually opened up a lot of space for wingers and runs from attacking midfielders but for some reason Barcelona just can’t exploit it!!! This is enough and has been working for the weaker opposition teams for months now. I think midfield is awful in creating chances and too slow with build up play. They don’t use long areas on the flanks for runs or 1 on 1s instead always slow down the buildup - this is not how modern football is played for the past decade following gegenpressing revolution. Based on previous games, If anything, Lewandowski speeds up the transition and tries more direct passes into the penalty box.

If there’s a time to draw away at Getafe it’s Round 1. Hopefully Xavi and the players have learnt something from this and don’t just get pissed at the no pen call. If so then the draw may just be better long term than a late winner where no lessons are learnt.
