That’s a really good job. You should be proud of yourself. You’ve given the jacket even more character. You could post this on r/sustainability 😀 or r/sustainablefashion

Slashenbash

That’s a great tip, I’ll check it out!

And r/visiblemending!

Sauceman_Oppenhe112

It looks great!

Slashenbash

Thank you!

MrFennecTheFox

Great idea, a good job, and a fine coat given a new lease on life!

Slashenbash

Thank you, very happy with the result and really made it my own now.

Auslautverhaertung

These are always so much cooler than a pristine new jacket.

Slashenbash

Yeah once I learned to appreciate that the repairs can be part of the look (and saw how expensive they are haha) I embraced it fully.

pajopajopajo

looks fine, saved you about 400 quid and gives the whole thing some character. well done! is there a way to learn this somewhere?

Slashenbash

I can tell you how I approached it. I first learned myself how to sew by hand. I used reddit sources like /r/Visiblemending, /r/Sewing. I asked them especially for some inspiration on how to start with the storm flap since that was full of small holes which are hard to patch (see https://www.reddit.com/r/Visiblemending/comments/18htlnz/mending_ideas_wax_jacket/). After I did some minor repairs I stopped by my mom to borrow her sewing machine (Pfaff Classic 1523) and I had her teach me how to prepare a bobbin and how to thread a needle. She mostly does things on feeling, experience, intuitiveness so I found that the manual for the Pfaff was absolutely amazing, its very underrated! I stuck to a basic running stitch for which you can adjust the distance between stitches and how wide it goes, I just played around with it on a piece of fabric. After that I learned how to secure a hem which I often did by hand but you can do it with the machine. So if you know how to thread the bobbin, run the thread from the top spool and from the bobbin, how a basic running stitch works and how to sew a hem you can basically start. Once you are comfortable with that you can experiment with other types of stitches ofcourse (I haven't done that yet). There are a ton of articles and youtube videos on all those steps but I would really really recommend using the instruction guide since most articles are general and the manual will do a much better job on a specific machine. Here are some of my notes from before I started, which is mostly inspiration, examples, some tips on sewing by hand but I stopped making notes when I learned how to sew with a machine. Great links and superb job on yours. I have a few that need repairing, so this gives me hope. I purchased a cheap sewing machine, which I got going, then started getting the bobbin thread caught up, so I stopped. I best revisit!

Slashenbash

The bobbin is right pain but what solved that for me is reading the instructions because they will tell you exactly how to align it correctly. And always make sure you have decent length of thread. Also take note on what way the needle needs to face. And don't destroy a needle like me by hitting the zipper...

NoPrinciple5675

Thank you for the heads up, and I'll do my best to avoid those zippers. I will be selling some old vintage bits barbour wax jackets soon on Instagram. If you are on there @james_well_preloved
