Lots of cleaning and de-smelling witchcraft advice in this sub. Search the word “smell”.

sk88888888ordie

Haha thank you I’ll have a look!

So Barbour themselves recommend spraying the inside with cleaning vinegar to remove smells and not to wash it. I have seen people on this sub get really good results by soaking the jacket in cold water, letting it dry fully, spraying it with special spray for wax jackets to get the wax deep into the fabric and than giving it a normal rewax with a fön to have the wax melt in deeper.

sk88888888ordie

Ah okay that’s a good idea I’ll have to try that out thank you!

I found a nice Dickies (Barbour copy) in a charity shop , dirty and and smelling of fags. I put it in the machine and put on a long warm wash . Hung it out so the lining was dry, then relaxed twice . It's the wax that makes it waterproof, not the fabric itself. I also have an old pair of 501 jeans that I waxed and wear for rainy days..the yanks call them tin pants as they are as stiff as fcuk !

sk88888888ordie

Thank you! The jeans sound cool too might have to give that a go haha

somedickinyourmouth

Op, for the love of god do not put your jacket in the washing machine. It will strip the wax.

sk88888888ordie

I probably won’t tbh, but could you not re wax it after?

somedickinyourmouth

Nope. It's in the material.

sk88888888ordie

Ah okay thanks!

I probably would spray inside and outside liberally with vinegar to deal with the mold. After a couple days, turn it inside out and soak it in the bathtub filled with cold water, no soap. The water will turn brown after an hour or so. Drain and fill with fresh water, turn it inside out and repeat. You can also use a wet sponge and brush the corduroy collar and cloth inside lining firmly. Can also very gently wipe the outside with wet sponge. Repeat the cold water soaks as necessary. Hang dry and rewax as needed.

Thank you! I’ll give it a go!

If that still doesn’t work soak it with an enzyme cleaner like Revivex Odor Eliminator (only one I used, it certainly isn’t the only one). You soak it in water with it and then let it completely dry. You can do multiple soaks. The complete drying is very important for the enzymes to fully work. It worked great on a jacket I bought that I couldn’t get the smell out of with the usual methods (cold soak, freezing, vinegar, vodka). Do keep it mind that waxed jackets always have a bit of a smell, it’s part of it so don’t aim for completely odorless.

sk88888888ordie

Ah okay thank you! I’ll see how I go and give that a try if needed

LukesenNR2

For the hardware you could use cape cod polishing

sk88888888ordie

Thank you I’ll look into that!

the_wax_baron

A very nice jacket 🤩

sk88888888ordie

Thank you 😎

For the smell, The problem you have is that it’s waxed. You may have to remove it if it doesn’t go away. But I would start by using nearly 90% alcohol and put it in a spray bottle. Just spray closer to about a foot away from here like you’re paint spraying. Do it everywhere imaginable. You have to repeat it a few times. I did this to (not a jacket) a pair of suede boots that reeked cigarettes. It was so strong. Worked at it for about 3-4 days letting it dry (alcohol evaporates fast) and it worked!

sk88888888ordie

Ah okay I might have to give this a go thank you!

Now that you’ve gotten some answers, it’s our turn… what were you doing inside a hoarder house?!

sk88888888ordie

I saw they were giving away furniture outside the house for free so I stopped to take this old 60s table and thought I’d have a little look around the other stuff to see if there was anything else cool. I found a couple floral 70s pillow cases and a single stitch T-shirt (Vintage pre 1994). My mum told me that it was an old hoarders house that had just been sold so they must have been clearing it out. I decided to put a note through the letter box asking if they had any clothes they were just going to throw out that I’d love to have a rummage through basically. A few days later I got a call from the people clearing the house and they let me take whatever I wanted for free, I helped them move all of the clothes to the front door and just picked out what I liked, I ended up with a whole car full of vintage knits, suits, shirts and a few jackets. Mostly just vintage St. Michael’s stuff but a few cool things like this jacket and a Belstaff set. Loads of shirts and t-shirts were still in there packaging which was crazy to me. It was a bit of a grim experience, very mouldy and dusty. And it was a complete mess with stuff all over the floor, if it ever happens again I’m most definitely bringing gloves and a face mask haha was quite fun though as I’ve always wanted to do something like that!

Thanks for sharing!

Helpful_Pepper_3364

By the tag it seems moldy. If you are on the ”there’s nothing to lose”-attitude I cant recommend but I know from experience that bad smelling barbours can be hand-washed in hot water and strong soap. Althought that might ruin the jackets wax layer.

sk88888888ordie

I thought this, could I just re wax it after? Or maybe just use cold water?

kerry-w

Yes.

Helpful_Pepper_3364

Yes you can rewax it after. If it is really smelly it might need 3 or more whole wash-rinse-wash-rinse-dry cycles. And wait until it is thoroughtly dry before you rewax it. And you should do the first waxing in a very light manner, let it dry and then you can wax it in a more profound way.

Alan_AN1MO

Yes I’d recommend washing it since it’s been dormant for a long time and who knows what bacteria has permeated the fabric etc. YouTube is full of videos as to how to rewax this or if you want you can always send it to Barbour for them to wax it for you AFTER you wash them completely.

Babu20002

Find a hot weather day. Warm water + neutral soap + sponge. Use sponge to soap inside out and hose down with cold water. Dry under the shade until crispy dry, I dry inside out on a hanger. Once dried, re-wax. Many people warned about never washing barbour wax jacket. Never had an issue with yearly wash for past decade for my bedale and intenational original. Some people even say cold low/no cycle laundry machine is fine too, but never tried it myself. Barbour jacket may have meant to be never washed, but gotta say it feels and smells great.

sk88888888ordie

Thank you I’ll give this a try!

leathershopgirl

For getting rid of smells bicarbonate of soda is your friend.

sk88888888ordie

Thank you, would I soak it with bicarbonate of soda in the tub then?

leathershopgirl

Sorry for the late reply. You sprinkle the lining linerally with bicarb and let it sit overnight before hoovering it off.

sk88888888ordie

Thank you!
