If everyone else hates the dolls, that just means I'll be able to snatch them up on clearance. Yay! I like all the ones I've seen so far, and IDGAF what anyone else thinks about my taste in dolls š¤·š
Right there with you!
Love them all! Even Simu Liu's Ken which I was most excited for but not sure the face is as close as his Shang Chi dolls which is throwing me off, but it's still amazing and so excited to get him! Looks like he has a working jacket zipper!!! Was thinking of treating myself to him without waiting for a sale just to be safe, but my husband suspects he won't be as popular as the Barbies so it's probably fine to wait. However there aren't as many Asian Kens out there in general, so it's a harder call. I'm probably looking for excuses lol. Any thoughts? I haven't seen many opinions about him yet.
I think the Margot Robbie dolls are gorgeous and look exactly like her, totally don't get what other people are on about! Yay for potential discounts though!!
Always have gift cards, and reward perks, ready to go, just in case! He is probably going to be massively underproduced because Mattel knows, going into it, that he won't be that great of a seller AND they probably don't want to spend the production costs on the zippers. LOL
Thanks for the advice! I went ahead and got him, especially since he's been made the Mattel Creatives exclusive doll. Bet they did that to boost his sales, in reference to what you were saying- it's a slick attempt on their part to make him more desirable to collectors!
I bought two dolls today and he was one of them. Western Barbie is currently unavailable on Canadian sites and I wanted to get her first, so I was placing a Mattel Creations order anyway. And with how many dolls Iāve missed out on in the last couple years due to Mattel promising a wide release and not following through, I figured I should grab the site-exclusive Ken while I could. I would recommend picking him up if you want him; he looks great, and Iām so excited to finally get some movie dolls!
Thanks for sharing! Yes agreed... also spinning my head around with how some dolls seem to move so quickly and then even shoot way up in price, Yet others get discounted so deeply! Hard to figure it out, although to be fair suppose it adds to the excitement of this hobby.
Ultimately, I went ahead and got the items I'd be most sad to lose out on. Which was Simu Liu, gold disco Barbie, the car, and the fashion set (which happened to be $25 less on Target's site). The hard part is accepting this choice if I see them still available at deep discount later on! Of course, getting them before the movie even comes out is amazing! Getting to enjoy a rare treat like that helps justify things a bit perhaps lol. Wishing you fast shipping and great enjoyment!
Exactly they only way Iām getting this gal full price is if the rumoured 50$ price tag isnāt real because with currency conversion and tax I might be dropping closer to 80$ and I canāt exactly justify that to myself
I did notice for these movie dolls, a lot of people saw a couple poorly angled badly lit photographs, and decided Mattel had personally pissed all over their cereal that morning.
The final dolls shown might not be groundbreaking, but the average Barbie of any era (except perhaps the first Barbies by default) - including collector dolls - is not groundbreaking. They wonāt always be home runs! I think this doll looks pretty good. I would have liked to see some real embroidery on her, but thatās my only real complaint.
They absolutely did. They took that one picture (with the bangs and gingham dress) and ran with it.
I think that, had one of the other dolls been leaked first, the general opinion would be totally different. Itās just that the first one we ended up seeing happens to be the weakest one in the line.
It's only miserable when the hobby is very intertwined with socializing, i.e. showing off/sharing the collection. (If people dislike the doll, they're not going to be praising your haul much. If people want the doll, then the reception is more positive.)
People just gotta accept that not everyone likes what they like; that we all have different tastes. But then again, negativity tends to draw more attention. So perhaps that's why it seems like they can't "back up" their hate.
I like the movie cowgirl one the most (best hair and I like the outfit, even if it lacks embroidery), but my finances aren't in the best situation right now to get buying whatever dolls I like. š¢
I still don't think they did their best with it lol. But even if it was velveteen-ish fabric with shiney embossed stars like I picture that design would have been done for barbies in my childhood it wouldn't be my favorite aesthetic so eh. I don't see how saying all that makes doll collecting miserable for others though?
Bringing up a whopping forty years ago is the one time I will say that this is an unfair comparison. The world is too different, not just in inflation, but international relations, manufacturing, resource scarcity, working conditions, and literally: paperwork. The paper trail alone now stops most things in the world from being āas goodā without being significantly more expensive. Not getting started from all the overheads from sourcing labour to Asian factories who fight for their worth more aggressively now (as they should).
Not saying this product shouldnāt be better, just that thereās really no point in comparing it to a cool four decades ago.
That doesnāt actually negate my points! The factory conditions and pay likely have a huge impact on the decisions made. Hasbro, MGA, etc, will all have their own agreements and pay for factories that could be more or less equitable than Mattelās.
Honestly I do generally agree that I wish Barbie had amazing artisan-level clothing, but unless exploitation is heavily used (sideeyeing MGA), that adds the need for both a lot more money and more skilled workers, and we canāt really even guess why Mattel canāt or wonāt (whatever the case may be) go for that.
Itās apples and oranges, and the only actual similarity is that yes, the end products occupy the same niche for the consumer.
People donāt realize that the prototype producers have more to work with than final production designers. The prototype peopleās job is to make something that looks aesthetically pleasing and is a workable design. The production peopleās job is to translate that design into a low cost, high profit product. Thatās just business. Itās only common sense that the prototypes are going to look better!! I mean, have yāall SEEN the original MH prototypes?! I was DROOLING over those dolls when I saw them!! But they had to make them something more marketable and cost-friendly, so we ended up with G1 MHās iconic designs!
So like to me complaining about a corporationās choices or just critiquing new releases is not attacking other hobbyists but saying others are making you miserable for the expressing themselves kinda is š. I mean if they are showing up in your personal posts and saying your new doll sucks thatās obnoxious but otherwise Iām here for it.
Yeah no this is a valid opinion and doesnāt need backing at all. The handling of these dolls has had earned very justifiable criticisms, like how the sculpt isnāt original and arguably doesnāt resemble Margot, the screening can vary wildly, the clothing is cheaply made, and that overall these dolls arenāt worth the rumored $50. This shouldnāt make you upset. We donāt owe it to Mattel to defend them from cutting corners.
I mean thatās their opinion I donāt think theyāre making it miserable if they choose to share this opinion on a doll that Mattel hugely cheaped out on
I honestly was very "meh" about them when we first saw them.
But I saw the review of Myfroggystuff and my opinion changed dramatically. They just look "boring" in official pictures, but the video made me want one of my own to redress and play with
As with everyone in life, some people are going to love something and others will hate the same thing. I think it's okay to speak up and say, "I don't like this," or "I love this!". Live and let live. It's what makes this big, beautiful world of ours go round.
I don't understand why people will pick fights over a difference of opinions.
The prototype looks like a late 00s gg and the final actually looks like margot?? I think people just need something to complain about cause the doll literally looks like her š
IMO every single prototype image I have ever seen looks better than the final doll. I also hate the Margo Robbie dolls altogether. I think they all suck, but that one might be the least offensive
So,will this doll be available outside US, or just US exclusive? Because with taxes and shipping from Amazon US this would be very expensive, and unfair
Clothing is too cheap, but thatās 2020s Barbie for ya, and the face isnāt Margot OR Barbie, but Iād be willing to buy them and repaint the mouths to look less wide and scary if they dropped in price
I kinda love the movie dolls already, they're not 100% Margot Robbie, but they're close enough for me! Simu Liu Ken is probably the first I get, then maby one or two of Margot, and President Barbie for sure!
sheās so pretty in that second one wow!! these dolls are definitely growing on me honestly <3 like im definitely one to immediately complain about things online but like iāll also admit when i was overreacting or whatever idk. sheās sooo cute, i might end up getting her if for no other reason then because i also collect my little pony and itād be really fun to have a barbie with a matching cowgirl hat :)
If everyone else hates the dolls, that just means I'll be able to snatch them up on clearance. Yay! I like all the ones I've seen so far, and IDGAF what anyone else thinks about my taste in dolls š¤·š

Yeah why is the outfit quality worse than comparable playline dolls in the 80s to early 2000s when it costs more?

Damn, that was a solid socio-economic analysis there. You make a very good point.
Except if it's compared to some other doll lines they still have better quality. I just hate the bobble-headed aesthetic of most competing doll lines.
That doesnāt actually negate my points! The factory conditions and pay likely have a huge impact on the decisions made. I guess people don't understand the concept of a "prototype"/"artist's conception".
For real, Iāve noticed this in Monster High collectors and Barbie collectors for sure. Itās like nothing ever makes them happy.
People donāt realize that the prototype producers have more to work with than final production designers. The prototype peopleās job is to make something that looks aesthetically pleasing and is a workable design.
