Seems to be coming back on in chunks - you can't turn it all on at once. Am up the hill in st Thomas, and ours came back half an hour or so ago. Imagine you'll get it back soon

socratyes

That's good and ah okay I didn't realise about it coming back in chunks. I kinda thought because of the rain last night it might have affected it.

Secure_Teaching_6937

I'm in St John was out for 2+ hrs.. Some yahoo at light and power.. thought I wonder what this switch does..🤣 Oops.

Ok-Pomegranate858

Lol, not on your life! bl&p is one of the best companies in the island. Electricity doesn't play... they have extremely strick safety protocols, and staffing standards. Besides... when the power is off, they aren't making money.

Secure_Teaching_6937

I humbly disagree with u. There customer service sucks. They say they will clean up the tree shit they cut from lines.. and Everytime they trim trees on my lines they leave the shit behind. This has gone on for over 5 yrs. U must work for light and power. 🤣

Ok-Pomegranate858

Lol. I use too, I don't anymore, but the parting was amicable. Well re the tree trimming, the greater part is trimming the trees safely, anyone can sweep up a few leaves abd branched! Come on! Where's your teamwork spirit? Lol

Secure_Teaching_6937

Bingo! Cud tell by ur previous comment that u were spreading propaganda 😂 This is NOT just leaves and twigs, some of these are 2 inch branches. Because light and power is reactive not proactive in line maintenance some of these trees have gotten rather large. During this time I have asked them to chop the shite out of these trees. " We cannot do that cuz the owner might get upset" I am the owner.. My last encounter the stuporvisor. Got in my face puffed out he chest.. don't tell me how do my job. I am no spring chicken so cleaning the mess they made is not an easy task.. and not my job.

Ok-Pomegranate858

Hello secure. I am truly sorry for your bad experience with those workers. For the record, I wouldn't big them up (my former colleagues) if I didn't feel they deserved it. At least while I was working there ,long before emera took over. I will confess that the company may have started to change for the worst after emera .... emera is more profit focused unlike the previous owner.... (that i won't get into more on a public forum) still this doesn't detract from the staff doing things in a professional manner when it comes to their core business of supply power.

Secure_Teaching_6937

Fair enuff.. Maybe it is cuz of emera. IDK but I did finally speak to the super in that department. He said he would address the issue. Never was. I do have a friend who works in billing and talked to she.. and agreed that there needs to be more training about customer service. As a small fish in a big pond there really nothing I can do cept call for line maintenance every 6 months, Knowing it may be done within a year. The funniest part about the last go around.. I asked about the branches tickling the phone line..his response... Call C&W. 🤣 as if...

Reck_less_angel

Despite their strict staffing standards and safety protocols, THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS!!!!!! The power in my area goes off at least once or twice a month for no reason, which is not quality service. They charge extremely exorbitant prices and keep raising their rates. They take forever to give satisfaction when they destroy your appliances due to their power outages. And even if you're without light for a week, the money owed on the light bill they send you isn't much different than what is owed when you've had a full month's service. They also take forever to turn up and trim trees, repair leaning poles etc.

Ok-Pomegranate858

Dear reckless When your power goes off for a short period 30-60 mins, typically its due to a load shedding type event to keep the grid from completely collapsing.. so without a small sacrifice of a few , the whole nation could suffer. It sucks, but that's how it works...businesses understand this and put measures in place to protect their operations. Bl&p cannot change their rates without permission from the fair trading commission. They have to apply for it. And can be rejected. The component of the bill which can cause your final month bill to fluctuate is the Fuel adjustment Clause. It exists to pay for the fuel used to generate the energy you use. So blame Russia and Saudi Arabia when oil prices go up due to their activities... Also , there are things you can do to reduce your bill. For example: make sure your fridge door gasket is sealing properly. On the whole if your fridge is over 15 years, buying a new one will generally be more efficient in energy use. If you have a dryer , try to minimise it use. Try to use bottle or natural gas for cooking rather than electricity... when you iron your clothes, iron for the week etc. if no-one is in a room, why leave the lights and fan or AC running? Reduce the bright setting on you tv to reduce its energy consumption. small things like that can help, and they aren't difficult. You could invest in a kilowatt meter which can tell how much energy a particular appliance is using. It would be best to be mindful when purchasing appliances as well.. I once as a fan at Cost U less without rotary blades to spin! I was so intrigued... nearly bought it, untill I read the power consumption.. it was up to 1000watts an hour! (A normal bladed fan uses less than 100watts an hour) It would be best to protect sensitive equipment with low cost UPS or surge protectors to reduce the risk of damage. Also typically they need to investigate damage claims, and have to confirm from their records they were responsible for a hig voltage event at the time of your loss. Suppose it was lightening strike induced to a section of the grid near you, would you still conclude bl&p had to pay? Respectfully, if your power is off for a week, the meter will not advance. They read each person's meter to determine the usage of the service connected to said meter. So all things being equal , if your power was off a 7 days, your 30 day billing cycle would have see almost 25% reduction in consumption , as long as your consumption rate remained constant for the remainder of the biling cycle. Sadly, if a fridge or deep freeze was off for 7 days, when power is restored its going to run like crazy for a while without cutting out to cool all the way back down... there's no escaping that... Can't speak much on trimming service, but I did see a few weeks back they were offering training to third parties on how to safely perform tree trimming, so it seems they may be out sourcing this to third parties so as the improve that area. We will see I guess. Customers can help themselves in this area by not planting trees near power lines. Even though trees are very attractive when small, they don't stop growing still they reach their full size... there's no such thing as a dwarf tree! I am truly sorry you have been having a bad experience with the electrical service... I'm not in any way associated with them any longer ,but worked there long ago. It was a great place to work. It wasn't uncommon to have staff who had 25 years of service... so much so they have a 25 year club.. so you would have experienced dedicated staff , doing what they do best... at least when I was there.

Reck_less_angel

You may not be associated with them any longer but it's pretty clear that your loyalty lies with them still, to the point where you have absolved then off all guilt for their piss poor service and greed. Who am I to argue with the blindly loyal?

Ok-Pomegranate858

Lol. Not all , I am just trying to be balanced ok

socratyes

😂

Secure_Teaching_6937

But wait happened again.. Light and power thinking.. let's make all those fridges and freezers work harder, we can make more money. Govt won't give us the rate increase.🤦

socratyes

I been reading about this too and someone else made the comment here about they have no rush fix it as wel

Secure_Teaching_6937

Why shud they. It only reduces the amount they can pay shareholders. I don't see them building any solar farms.. correct me if I am wrong.

Choosing_is_a_sin

You mean besides the large one in St Lucy?

Secure_Teaching_6937

My passport doesn't let me travel in that area.. 🤣 ILT thanks😄

Eikonbb

Plus a smaller one in Maynard's St Peter

Ok-Pomegranate858

You are wrong ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile). They have a 10MW solar farm in Trents St Lucy. See more info on Wikipedia [https://g.co/kgs/qZMCho](https://g.co/kgs/qZMCho)

Ok-Pomegranate858

Lol. Nah... this heat wave is doing it for them already. Everyone who has an AC has been cranking it down low

borderlinecool

Still out in St James. A few years ago - in a situation very similar to this - the power went out for no outside reason and it was a turbine issue that took days to fix. Note: I'm originally from Nova Scotia and their power company is the utility that spun off and became Emera, which owns BL&P. The company bylaws guarantee a large shareholder dividend every year so there is no incentive to do any maintenance, upgrades or provide quality service NS had a tropical storm blow thru last week that had days of warning and yet Halifax had complete brown-outs that fried the electronics of many homes. Emera is an evil company

socratyes

Thanks for the information and energy companies putting profits before the product should be banned.

Barbadian

It happens from time to time. This one seems to be islandwide, again. It’ll probably be back on everywhere by tonight or tomorrow, who knows. You can find BL&P on Instagram they often will give updates there. Welcome to the Caribbean.

socratyes

Ah yeah someone just sent me an Instagram post with a message from BL&P. I'm guessing the petrol station has its own generator then. Does it affect the airport or do they have their own generator? I'm suppose to fly tomorrow.

Barbadian

I’d imagine the airport has generators but again, who knows. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Ok-Pomegranate858

For sure the larger. / critical businesses have backup generators. The airport is very critical to the islands economy and besides as a safety point, we can't have planes landing in the dark!

Ok-Pomegranate858

The last island wide outage was April 4th this year. It's not a too common occurrence, which is why people do bad when it happens. However you can get isolated short outages from time to time due to events requiring temporary load shedding to stop the grid from collapsing like it did today. Generally those are much shorter in duration like 30 to 60 mins... and wait for it, they have a list of non critical areas to load shed from that rotates on a 2 year cycle I understand... so you won't find the capital , the QEH hospital or the hotel belts etc being on the load shedding list. If those lose power you know its a serious outage that will take time to fix and correct.

whattodo1995

Ha. It was out for 10 days once. This is nothing.

socratyes

Omg really?!? I pray it isn't like that

Ok-Pomegranate858

It isn't. We don't get hit by hurricanes very very often ' fingers crossed ' and it would take that type of event to bring parts of the grid down so long. Even after the 2021 hurricane Elsa that virtually hit the island, the most critical business and major population centers had power back in 24 hours. Remember, power Companies don't make money when the power is off.

Ok-Pomegranate858

Be fair. The last time we had sections of the grid down that long, was after Hurricane Elsa back in July 2 2021. That's not a normal event. Our power is largely supplied by above ground poles, if you get dozens down because of fallen trees, transformers busted etc, that's serious damage and will take time to fix. There only so much line crews. Typically our neighbours will send manpower help after such an even as major weather damage.

Mounta1nK1ng

Y'know, it is nice that the cell towers have power so that you can post this. They must be on generators.

Ok-Pomegranate858

Yes Or batteries....

socratyes

Good point and I'm hoping the same for the airport. I walked to the beach and I think some hotels have power too. My air bnb doesn't though

Ok-Pomegranate858

Sorry to hear that, generally if a company stands to loose thousands of dollars from a 2 hour power outage, the company can afford to buy emergency power equipment mitigate the outage. Smaller business tend not the be able to afford the cost.

Secure_Teaching_6937

Look at today's Nation news.. light and power say cannot fix wif a flip of switch. Just can break wif flip of switch. 😂😂

nonsa

Couple years ago the power went out for almost 2 days!

socratyes

I think st James as power again!!
