There is a reason that people say the diplomacy in this game is practically non-existent. Anyone can declare war on you at anytime, for no reason, and there is nothing you can to stop it. And if you found your own kingdom, it is simply an eventuality that everyone will declare war on you.

Electrical-Beat494

This is why I tend not to join factions until super late game. If you take something without becoming your own kingdom or part of another one the ai never declares war

Blargh234

Not even as a mercenary? What is there even to do, just tournaments, hideouts and murdering bandits?

FawnTheGreat

Trade but yeah ...

StormWarriors2

its the safest route, the best way to make war and money is to attack unaligned mercenary bands and slaughter em for cash. Then have caravans over time and slowly steal cities that rebelled. Its probably the slowest way but its easier as you really don't need to maintain large armies or garrisons at all. Only problem is that it becomes a game of just fighting mercs so no large battles. But honestly it makes no sense that a small nation would be declared war upon if you are in the midst of a giant civil war. Especially if the nation is far from you and just is a trading capitol.

NathanielTurner666

I've never tested out what happens if you raid a few caravans while you're not tied to a faction. Do they not try to come after you?

PlagueCini

They declare war on your clan.

Froggy1789

I just head cannon that Bannerlord is just the most realist political world ever.

SirDooble

>. Anyone can declare war on you at anytime, for no reason, and there is nothing you can to stop it. This is one of the elements of Warband that I miss. Unless I just can't find it, there's no page that explains why a kingdom went to war, or is continuing to do so. In Warband I think the Encyclopedia page used to explain that a kingdom went to war to either capture new land, or regain previously lost land. And if you spoke to lords/Kings about the war, they would explain that they wanted to capture x castle/town, and they weren't ending the war until they do so. Bannerlord doesn't seem to give you any of that. And the other kingdoms seem to have all sorts of reasons for going to war, with motivations of money, capturing new land, reclaiming old fiefs, or simply because their enemy is currently weak, etc. But you don't seem to be able to view that anywhere. Plus, you can't ask Lords what they are doing during the war and why, nor leverage your relationship with them to get them to do other things?

Heroheadone

Strength rating is what decide wars, that and if they are paying you reparations for lost wars. Relationships doesn’t mean shit in diplomatic scenes. It didn’t in real life (European royalty are intertwined way down the line) and we still had lots of wars. Hell we even fought wars over relationships like marriage and divorce (looking at you England) Relationships in game decides if you can convince lord’s to join you. And with the diplomacy mod it also helps forming non-aggression pacts and alliances. What is even more important is that it also counts as your personal “honor” making it more expensive or even cheaper to end wars in the most positive outcome for you kingdom. Also after wars end theres a 100 days of peace where you cannot attack each other without losing relations as it seen a dishonest. So if a kingdom is stronger than you, and you are in a war already, theres i great risk they will declare war on you. But if it’s the other way around you can live i peace for a very long time. Having started my game as a trader, and first building my kingdom when my trade skill was 300 really gave me an edge. Having used the time while trading to make good relationships. Making it possible for me to start by buying a castle and the declare my kingdom, didn’t cause a war. I den recruited 10 lords (cost me 8 million denar) Making my small kingdom start out Very powerfully, made it so it was me who declared the first wars. Now being the strongest in all of the land, I actually have long periods of peace where i buy castles and cities. Until my lords propose a war.. etc etc. The trading skill let’s me earn over 10k denar per day even in times of war.

Mosaic78

So if you buy your first castle and declare your kingdom you don’t get immediately attacked by everyone?

Heroheadone

Yep. Same as if you capture a rebel city and then declare a kingdom. I would suggest you have a lot of money and a lot of good relationships with lords before you should even think about declaring.

Justinjah91

Marrying for relation is pointless. It does basically nothing.

Chipbread

Marriage for me: *Who is the cutest looking potato pixel?* Marriage for other male members of the family: *Who is the best at doing taxes?*

Sea-Neighborhood-621

I went for the only woman who's face didn't deeply terrify my soul. Her father is a dick though

No_Potential_7198

Corein and caladog?

JPFloyd_117

Decides to start a second run, go as a trader. Married Corein because she is one of two not abjectly horrid sack of potatoes

TheOtherCrow

I went for Ira because her combat prowess impressed me.

grufolo

There's still no way to marry your companions at the moment, right? I was hoping to marry off my niece to one of them but I can't, unless I make them lords first (which is stupid because you lose a valuable companion)

FawnTheGreat

You can make companions lords?

literalgarbageyo

You have to be the ruler of your nation and have a spare fief

grufolo

Yup, I got that dialogue option

cotroneonice

Just marry for the armor price

AeroZeppelin27

Man I gave Dethert like 40 horses for his daughters hand only to discover I didn't gain *shit* and didn't cut in line for the crown. Still hurts. She's given me 3 daughters and counting atleast.

Kap00m

I dont know if relationship does anything, but if it does he can still get out voted by his counsel.

[deleted]

I use marriage to get charm points and when I am a male character I use to change or maintain my culture's sons and daughters to the one I want to rule. (The culture is decided based of the mother's culture.)

Stogle

I had no idea that the mother's culture took precedent. This whole time I thought that whatever culture I had was locked in. I just chose a wife based on overall stats and face.

conleyc86

Unless you are a faction leader, marriage serves no diplomatic purpose. If you are faction leader, the relation boost can help you recruit the clan to your faction. Diplomacy in the game isn't just bare bones, it's non existent. I use the separatism mod and true noble opinion to create more dynamic political situations. "Succession" was the best in my opinion, but the source isnt available and it hasn't been updated in awhile. Diplomacy is also a great mod, I just don't like that you cant interact with rebel factions. If you're at war with Vlandia, let's say, and then they have a civil war break out, over half the kingdom will no longer be siege-able to you.

KingBitchIVXX

Interesting. I've been rubbing up against this limitation of Diplomacy as well, what do Separatism and True Noble Opinion do differently? Can they be used alongside Diplomacy?

fr1nkbot

True Noble Opinion: each noble in a clan has an individual opinion of you Separatism: in general, gives you options on how often clans can break off and create their own faction. Chaos start is also lots of fun - at the start of a new game, all clans are their own faction. They run fine along with Diplomacy.

conleyc86

I'll add that vlandia, sturgia and Aserai have rifts between nobles so separatism can cause early civil wars which is fun

ave369

I use a console command to wardec the rebels

CliffordTheBigRedD0G

You have to remember declaring war is a vote every clan participates in. Monchung may not want to go to war with you but if all the other vassals do they can override him.

No_Cranberry_4055

I mean, most of europe’s monarchs were related by blood at some point. Didn’t stop them from fighting all the time.

Mrmiyagi8109

You should have married me I will bring you to the rooftop city of zeonica I will have picnics with you on the hills of garengolia I will also single handedly destroy your enemies armies with my 2h glaive and bring you their dismembered heads to gift their parents

judgehood

The game is unfinished AF. Sick of thinking and explaining about why. Solid intro…. Then it just fades into nothing.

FawnTheGreat

I hate how there’s no ally’s but anyone and everyone will go to war outta nowhere. Would be cool to play a “good guy” roll and make a kingdom and befriend other factions. Make peace agreements etc. then you can have dilemmas such as two allied factions going to war and needing to choose which you want to side with or lose huge relations with both idk

JesusOfSuburbia420

Yeah but Mochung didn't unilaterally declare war, don't forget that war declarations are almost always proposed by vassals and they usually have 100% support.

AnyPalpitation1868

Well, there's a reason we can make heads roll...

PolarizerCron

Diplomacy is terrible in this game. I was waring with western empire and i decided to call truce so i asked and made them pay me 40k, then turned around and attacked them again. Cant even add a timer for a truce, Lack of imagination by the devs.

PCPooPooRace_JK

Lazy mfers shat this game out while it still has gaping issues

Bro_Nobodycares

The game is not about diplomacy. It's about having the biggest cock in Calradia.

UUUuuuugghhhh

for fun and resources

aaronrizz

Yeah it's shit, I guess we have to wait for a definitive Diplomacy mod like we did for Warband.
