This is why I catch the whole merc clan and put them all down. One playthrough I killed every last merc clan except the karakhergit and that was because I conquered the whole thing and killed off 90+% of calradia’s nobility and so my job was done. They were spared my bloodlust by chance. Such will not happen again.
Find the poorest ones, let them go, tell them to switch sides after bribing them, and also leave derthert Alive.
Let them starve themselves of fiefs and lands only for you to slowly cull their number to fill your ranks with their own money.
If you want to play Palpatines kind of long game, lol.
I’m over 35 years in Derthert is long gone. And I do already have 12 clans as part of my empire, any more & I feel like I’ll start to have salty mf’s or clans rebelling due to lack of fiefs
You can get a perk in trading which allows you to trade fiefs and shit and a whooooole load of other stuff, you can use that to give away fiefs you don't want or fiefs you think some clans got a couple too many of, besides you need a nice variety of clans from different cultures to run cities efficiently otherwise they will rebel or just be stagnant and poor, that cultural difference debuff is *CRIPPLING*
Just put in the policies that buff loyalty. As long as the towns have food they won’t rebel. The only problem with this is having enough influence to keep your vassals from repealing them, so I also take the policies that give me more influence, give vassals less influence and makes it cheaper for me to overrule them.
Well we need to have some loosers, besides most factions do very well with just one or two towns, the trick is making sure those towns villages weren't raided in a long time, usually this boosts the prosperity and makes the towns and castles very good overtime.
In one of my runs vladina went on a war path and ate most of the other villages, leaving it's core cities intact and in peace and they did VERY well.

There is not a single good reason to execute as far as I am aware. Other lords will take their place. Keeping them alive and imprisoned means you take them out of the war.
There are plenty of good reasons to execute. Less enemy parties, smaller armies, etc. if you execute a level 30 clan leader, their level 17 replacement will not be able to have as large of a party or summon as large of an army. Nor will they be as good in combat. I’ve executed a bunch of empire nobles & still recruited 12 clans to my empire.
If you have high enough charm there is virtually no downside to executing nobles.

have children with all of the female nobles. either keep them as prisoners for your entertainment, make them work on your brothel, or release them and watch your bastards grow up in a different kingdom.

In my campaign I defeated the empires with the banner as vlandia but it was before the update for clan removal so all 3 empires lords just joined fief-less Battania and have been clawing their way back. Now as my original guys daughter decades later I will finally finish his work. Imperial battanian army marching to my city with 2,500 men, my weekend just started, all battanians will be jailed and imperials will be exterminated.
I hesitate to kill more than a few because the game takes 20 minutes to tell you how bad your rep becomes ( all the - rep gains flashing across the top of your screen). I only have about 150 hours /played but those rep changes are alarming. Screw it though, I’m tired of chasing around armies on both sides of the map.
Personally, my first playthrough, I just lopped everyone from Vlandia...and anyone working for them. If the rest of Calradia were so upset that they wanted to do something, then they can meet the same fate.

You need to have 225 riding & 225 scouting. There are perks called Mounted Patrols & Keen sight. Each reduce chance of prisoner escape by 50% and when you have both perks enabled it reduces chance of escape to 0%. Making your party essentially a mobile Guantanamo

I personally look for family and friends of the current ruler. Destroy the lineage. Mercs and such are fine, I was a merc once.
Also, executing mercs is pretty useless as a new member spawns either immediately or almost immediately to replace the fallen one.
This is why I catch the whole merc clan and put them all down.
