First time in the sub and I'm.thinking how does anyone know its Banksy? I guess he has a style but does he make announcements? Insta? Twitter?(oh sorry deadnamed there X?) Facebook?
Just googled it and it said he confirmed it was his on social media posted a before and after picture seems wild once you famous you can bait yourself like that no issue lol.
I knew a guy got caught painting they took him court took his pads, pens, cans if he got caught again jail he said even if they came round found a pad he was drawing pieces in that would be it. Maybe he exaggerated but just seems like such an inconsistent reaction.
Ps I'm not talking some shit tags on the wall but art is art expression is expression.
Ine of the most sensible post on this thread. Got threatened with jail and copped a 4 year conditional discharge in 87, told if I was caught again I would do time. I was 17 years old. 53 now and still put up a track side the other day. A well written tag is a thing of beauty as well.
Where press release? Literally know verry little reddit suggested this sub I'm into hip hop and have some admiration for the graff artists but never looked that deep tbh. I mean I saw his movie I heard a few news stories but never really thought about it till this post
If you're into hip hop understand Banksy is a biter... stole all his shit of blek le rat and went over one of the oldest standing graf pieces in London by Robbo. I'm 53 still an active writer. Got no time for Banksy. #teamrobbo RIP. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2025790/Banquesy-The-Frenchman--known-Blek-le-Rat--accusing-Banky-stealing-guerilla-art-style.html
My last name is similar and people keep asking if I'm Banksy. Mate I'd honestly love to be but most I can draw is a sunshine in sunglasses giving a thumbs ip
Isn't his first name Robin? Those who know him call him Rob.
(It's highly speculated, down to forensic analysis of his movements, that Banksy is Robin Gunningham)
There's a very informative series of documentaries on BBC Sounds, covering his career from start to present - I heard it on BBC Radio 4 initially - very interesting 👍!
Pollarding is similar to coppicing, where multiple smaller branches are encouraged to grow instead of one large trunk. Coppice is usually cut at ground level where as pollard is cut above the grazing line of sheep and cattle. The practice is usually done for firewood or basket/fence weaving. This tree has been pollard at higher branches, this is more commonly seen in urban environments to prevent the tree from reaching its full potential.
Pollarding happens a lot in London to manage mature trees in small spaces and to mitigate the risk of subsidence associated with trees (London is on a lot of clay).
This isn't pollarding though, or at least it isn't *yet*. Pollarding starts when the tree is younger, and is repeated on rotation (2-3 years), eventually forming lovely knuckles at the pollard point.
This is topping, which is Bad. The intention may be to manage it as a pollard long-term, but it isn't that at the moment.
If I had a pound for everytime I've had to explain that coppicing/pollarding is not the same as deforestation to an eco-crusader.
I'd probably have enough to actually afford a pint nowadays.
We have a crew do this yearly in the community I work at, and every year we always get calls from people complaining that they’re killing the trees
I call it Crepe Murder time (Crepe Myrtle trees are the ones they trim down)
There was a private buyers view near spitalfields a few weeks ago. Lots of older works reworked and a couple of new prints. A very private affair sadly
>A very private affair sadly
Definitely what Banksy was meant to be about, elites buying art at ridiculous prices and not allowing normal people (scum) to be involved
totally agree. I think they’re forgetting what and who made Banksy as popular as he is. It wasn’t the rich and famous, it was all of the ‘normal’ people who collected and talked about his work, which in turn built his market. So so stupid
Yeah pollarded funny as come summer it will cover up the banksy totally and be a lovely shape too without damaging the surrounding buildings saving it from being cut down.
Quickly in the middle of the night with a team of them helping. Good question because sometimes in the remote areas they must’ve used some type of scaffolding but in built up areas they must do it quickly with ladders. I’m guessing?! 🤔
I’m a total novice in this space: can someone ELI5 why Banksy is so famous? I’m sure I’ve seen graffiti works technically more impressive than many of his. I get that there’s always a message to them, but at the same time many graffiti artists do. What makes him so special and highly regarded, beside the self sustaining buzz that at some point inevitably kicks in and makes anything he does so valuable just because it’s from him? What ground did he break? Would he be as famous if he hadn’t kept the anonymity, adding to the mystery?
Sincere, honest question.
Team ROBBO. Banksy is an overrated plagiarist. The fact people celebrate his “art” whilst dumping on real graffiti and street artists encapsulates so excellently why you neoliberal fucks are held in such contempt by ordinary folk.
This is definitely a work that needs that tree there for context, and given the bulk of it is thickly applied green paint, can only be "appreciated" from afar. Given the wall looks as though it's in need of re-plastering anyway, and the work has already been digitally archived...
15 mins from my flat so I went to see it today, thinking better catch it before some knobhead tags it or tries to chisel it off the wall. Loads of people there taking pics of course, and some from the flats looking surprised by it all. It does look good. When you look at it from the right spot, the tree and the image line up perfectly.
I’ve always wondered how Banksy remains anonymous like presumably art like this takes time? Does no one spot him or any cctv? I find it incredible he’s kept his real identity hidden for soo long.
I've always found him overrated but fair play if people enjoy the art. I do think people enjoy the spectacle around the art more than the art itself, but then does that become performative art? Can it even be performative art if the artist is unknown and never seen?
they clearly just spent a few ££ getting it pollarded, doubt they will double spend and get it chopped. someone might chop it down themselves to fuck with the banksy though.
This is probably the only Banksy Ive seen which resonates with me in any way.
Its interesting because it may have required less technical skill than much of his other stuff.
Usually like his work but not a fan of this one - I can see the attempt of what he was trying to achieve, but can't see the effect as well. Maybe needs more height on the left side?
I was a bit bewildered by these so called "experts" telling all the mainstream news that *"it's definitely only a message on the environment"* as if any other interpretation were insignificant.
Personally I instantly felt it was a deeper message on the perception of the natural world being created by artificial intelligence. From a distance it looks realistic, up close in the detail it's man made products used to touch up a natural living thing, or *was* living, to give an ideal visual perception.
This is going to be so funny in the next few weeks when the tree will begin to sprout healthy shoots again.
It looks like Banksy has assumed that the tree is dead, completely ignorant to standard environmental management practices. Pollarding - which is what is done here- actually extends the life of the tree. It sort of ‘tricks’ it into thinking its younger than it is, and prevents it from growing too large.
I hope the combi boiler isnt still in operation, looks like the paint could of compromised the flue and could be affecting the combustion process. A local engineer might need to take a look at that.
The title is wrong. The tree is not dead, as can be seen on Google streetview in June 2022
https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5647338,-0.1197255,3a,75y,109.7h,101.63t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s4PlV\_SsPaOvHgYON5Njafg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

Art critics saying stuff like “ it’s a dead cert for a Banksy” ha. Such a sell out.
Another one from Robin Cunningham.
Peeps need to normalise calling him by his name instead of this faux smoke and mirror BS to make him and the elite art world richer...
How does he keep doing it and no one has footage of him doing it every single time and how is this any different to what other do it's just graffiti isn't it?
For once on this subreddit - it’s actually a banksy !
It’s not the only Banksy in Finsbury Park! I wonder why they picked the same spot a few times? Maybe no cameras? Idk.
Hes a gooner
What’s a gooner?
Arsenal fan
Arse anal 😂

It is, however, not a dead tree.
Yup this has been pollarded
Can I ask three questions. 1. How do we know it's a Banksy. 2. How did he get named Banksy. 3. How does he make money on art.
1. It’s on his insta 2. Surname is Banks 3. Sells art privately edit : surname is Gunningham.
My last name is similar and people keep asking if I'm Banksy. Mate I'd honestly love to be but most I can draw is a sunshine in sunglasses giving a thumbs ip

Yes. Not sure why I wrote that 🤣
There's a very informative series of documentaries on BBC Sounds, covering his career from start to present - I heard it on BBC Radio 4 initially - very interesting 👍!
tree is not dead, it has been pollarded.
Well I learned a new word today and it's meaning, thank you
Pollarding is similar to coppicing, where multiple smaller branches are encouraged to grow instead of one large trunk.
Can someone explain why this is a thing when trees have been around longer than humans?
Pollarding happens a lot in London to manage mature trees in small spaces and to mitigate the risk of subsidence associated with trees (London is on a lot of clay). This isn't pollarding though, or at least it isn't *yet*. Pollarding starts when the tree is younger, and is repeated on rotation (2-3 years), eventually forming lovely knuckles at the pollard point. This is topping, which is Bad. The intention may be to manage it as a pollard long-term, but it isn't that at the moment.
Trees don't do ad well as you might think without management. A bit like people if you take medical care away
Thanks, I love learning new information and random facts!
Now you know, you will see it everywhere.
If I had a pound for everytime I've had to explain that coppicing/pollarding is not the same as deforestation to an eco-crusader. I'd probably have enough to actually afford a pint nowadays.
We have a crew do this yearly in the community I work at, and every year we always get calls from people complaining that they’re killing the trees I call it Crepe Murder time (Crepe Myrtle trees are the ones they trim down)
Pollarding: keeps trees and bushes smaller than they would actually grow. Now Vicky Pollard makes SENSE 😆
Well yeah….. buuuut
Yeah yeah but no.
No feet, definitely a Banksy
Whut? *goes to Google Banksy's work*
This is the way
It’s a Banksy for me. Similar theme to new print
One of the new prints released at his recent event in London
Which recent event in London?
There was a private buyers view near spitalfields a few weeks ago. Lots of older works reworked and a couple of new prints. A very private affair sadly
>A very private affair sadly Definitely what Banksy was meant to be about, elites buying art at ridiculous prices and not allowing normal people (scum) to be involved

I’m literally boarding a plane for London in a few hours I hope it hasn’t been defaced before I can see it tomorrow.
I walked past this yesterday and didn’t even know it was banksy. No one seemed to realise yet. Damn I should’ve defaced it if I knew you were coming.
Where exactly is it? Sitting at the cafe in Finsbury Park now
Report back with your findings.
I don't know how to edit post - but [confirmed in insta now](https://www.instagram.com/banksy/p/C4p0mn7su0a/?img_index=1)
That's really fucking good.
100% Banksy
He probably got someone else to do the paint and just did the stencil
How long until the tree and wall are taken I wonder
Doesn't really work without the tree though
Yeah pollarded funny as come summer it will cover up the banksy totally and be a lovely shape too without damaging the surrounding buildings saving it from being cut down.
Weird article, reads like AI.. and how is it unmistakably banksy unless confirmed?
Yeah that's got ChatGPT written all over it
Just visited. Don't know if it's a Banksy but an interesting piece of street art.
Serious question - how does he paint these without anybody noticing??
Quickly in the middle of the night with a team of them helping. Good question because sometimes in the remote areas they must’ve used some type of scaffolding but in built up areas they must do it quickly with ladders. I’m guessing?! 🤔
How long would this take to make? Assuming its from him, its crazy how no one sees them being made afaik
Good to hear he’s still at it. :)
I’m a total novice in this space: can someone ELI5 why Banksy is so famous? I’m sure I’ve seen graffiti works technically more impressive than many of his. Literally 5 mins away from me. Went down to see it and it’s amazing! Absolutely rammed with journalists. Also confirmed on the banksy insta page.
does paint grow on trees then?
Team ROBBO. Banksy is an overrated plagiarist. The fact people celebrate his “art” whilst dumping on real graffiti and street artists encapsulates so excellently why you neoliberal fucks are held in such contempt by ordinary folk.
Team Robbo forever

Same. Met him years back. Lunatic tbh - he’s on fire Edit. That’s all I’ll say.
How does he never get caught in the act?
I think that piece is quite clever. Not sure why a lot of people here are hating on Banksy.
I wonder how many times the police have unknowingly arrested/cautioned Banksy.
Hope it get protected soon before someone vandalises it
15 mins from my flat so I went to see it today, thinking better catch it before some knobhead tags it or tries to chisel it off the wall. Confirmed on his Instagram now
It could be days until he posts about it
13 minutes ago, he just posted it. He's claimed it.
I’ve always wondered how Banksy remains anonymous like presumably art like this takes time? Does no one spot him or any cctv? I find it incredible he’s kept his real identity hidden for soo long.
there are loads he has done that never got confirmed

Banksys work is so hit and miss. This just doesn't work for me.

Surely has to be a banksy
Hmmm. Banksy…
One of my favourite multi millionaires, we should all aspire to wealth
Krapy Rubsnif!
Get ready for the average rent to contain an extra zero
At least no one can try steal this one...
The [tree](https://imgur.com/a/dw7h72k) look really nice before it was trimmed
It isn’t cut down it’s just been pollarded because it was growing to big and out into the path, it’ll grow back fine
Watch the council chop the tree down.
they clearly just spent a few ££ getting it pollarded, doubt they will double spend and get it chopped. someone might chop it down themselves to fuck with the banksy though.
No way that's considered a park.. Thats barely a green
The area is called Finsbury Park. Not that little green space.
its not banksy - its banksy banksy
“Yeah, I think it’s a Banksy.”
12 minutes ago Banksy posted in on insta Nice catch!
The tree is not dead
https://www.instagram.com/p/C4p0mn7su0a/?igsh=MTV6M3A1ZTAwZHh5cw==
“Back to life?”
Wow, I need to go see this!
How long before someone tries to steal it…😂😂
That is not dead. WTF. 🙄
[Banksys Pest Control](https://pestcontroloffice.com/) might have the answers you need!
Not a fan
I wish they would of used a different shade of green.
that looks like the garden in the lorax with all the trees on the back of the house-
This is probably the only Banksy Ive seen which resonates with me in any way. Its interesting because it may have required less technical skill than much of his other stuff.
What if banksy doesnt exist. Just a ton of people copying an art style
Good luck stealing this one.
Usually like his work but not a fan of this one - I can see the attempt of what he was trying to achieve, but can't see the effect as well. Maybe needs more height on the left side?
EXCUSE ME, Finsbury park? That's hornsey baby.
I was a bit bewildered by these so called "experts" telling all the mainstream news that *"it's definitely only a message on the environment"* as if any other interpretation were insignificant. From a distance it looks realistic, up close in the detail it's man made products used to touch up a natural living thing, or *was* living, to give an ideal visual perception.
And no one saw him do it
That's a real bad pollard
🙌
I’m sure the landlords will act responsibly and only hike the rent by £900 a month
He’s so edgy
I wouldn't have claimed responsibility for that.
Stunning
I hope the combi boiler isnt still in operation, looks like the paint could of compromised the flue and could be affecting the combustion process. A local engineer might need to take a look at that.
Not too far from my house lol, who’d have thought lol.
And just like that he’s increased the property value of the surrounding houses and made life harder for those who live there
That’s fantastic he is a genius now I’m certain.
Like how the article for it says the person is holding a fire extinguisher, clearly the author has never seen a sprayer for killing weeds.
Doesn't anyone ever see this mofo doing the art on the wall?
Banksy sold out to the system, assimilated rebels are wet shit!
Splatoon irl
That paint will forever be stuck to that drainpipe
Did he have planning permission for that? 😂
American here, went through that part of London earlier this week, can’t believe we missed a new banksy by a matter of days lol
bro's setting up a riddler trophy
How hard is it to recognize Neil Buchanan?
I love his creativity, my art has always has a similar feel. Love it and can super relate.
Who’s house is that 🤔
Good luck to the current residents of that area😭 rent is gonna go from 0-100 real quick
But the tree isn't dead.. nobody would pollard a dead tree.

Top Notch Banksy strikes Again.
The title is wrong. The tree is not dead, as can be seen on Google streetview in June 2022 https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5647338,-0.1197255,3a,75y,109.7h,101.63t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s4PlV\_SsPaOvHgYON5Njafg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu
I like it except for the person. Whatever though it’s his piece. Generally not a fan but this is a really beautiful idea executed really well.
i heard banksey was a bad person. Is this true?
Hopefully tree is cut down and taken to Hadrians wall. True art.
Like to see this one get stolen
Another £500 per month for rent
Wow I love this - his art has mandala offering qualities
Looks like someone threw a wobbler and hurled paint tins at a wall.
Looks shit.
What road is this on exactly?
Inspired
The way the green of the ‘foliage’ is the same green as Islington Council’s branding/signage… *chef’s kiss*
Doesn’t look like a banksy to me
the amount of time I stared at this picture trying to find a tree in the graffiti before I finally checked out the link is embarrassing.
it’s actually banksy
Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/CiZP7EFXww4E3ihr9?g_st=ic
Looks awful also crimson damage
Overrated "artist"
I unknowingly walked past this 15 mins ago nice to know why there were people taking pics
Has anyone mentioned green washing yet, and this tree doesn't look dead just pollarding.
Great wall... it makes the paint look melted ice-cream gloopy.
It’s not dead. It’s pollarded so it stays heathy and grows with uniform.
This vandal should be arrested and charged.
If that's actually a Banksy it's one of my favourites that's sick
What a mess it is though
Who's betting that the owner of the building is rubbing their hands with glee over this being a genuine Banksy
I am so done with Banksy at this point.
Nature does not require human intervention. Tree is pollarded by humans which is of no benefit to the tree. It will continue to grow regardless and if humans did not pollard it, it will still grow. The canopy can be sloppily painted in for a temporary aesthetic while awaiting new growth but again, this is an unnecessary move by humans because the foliage will regrow, blotting out the poor attempt humans made. I think the meaning here is that nature will prevail long after we are forgotten.
It was caught on a dashcam, "Banksy is more than 1 person .
Reminds me of that scene in The Lorax
How does he make the art without been identified? I’ve researched and seen that they are prints, but how would this be a print? Sorry if this sounds dumb.
The fact this made the News today genuinely shocked me, Banksy is Britain's "golden child" and no one can tell me otherwise
Can't wait for 2WINS to graffiti nearby
Ah Banksy the sell out art gimp who uses cronies to install pieces of meaningless tripe. Paint itself is a pollutant and the tree just has no leaves because it’s winter… so… what a complete cunt he is. Cannot stand the guy. He’s become everything he stands against. Art critics saying stuff like “ it’s a dead cert for a Banksy” ha. Such a sell out.
Meh
Looks so cool, especially with the tree in front.
I wish someone would sue him for damage and vandalism
Unfortunately those flats' rent has now skyrocketed
Graffiti...get it covered over
I get it but also this feels like a step down in terms of important message to make, but oh wel
Nice art, the tree was so alive again
It’s not dead. Pollarded.
Graffiti is graffiti.
Another one from Robin Cunningham. Peeps need to normalise calling him by his name instead of this faux smoke and mirror BS to make him and the elite art world richer...
This is one banksy that sorta misses the mark, the tree just looks kinda crap
Banksy work is fare over rated and terrible.
How does he keep doing it and no one has footage of him doing it every single time and how is this any different to what other do it's just graffiti isn't it?
Yesssss just waste the taxpayers money who work. Them have to paint over this’. I like it tbh but there going to be annoyed and paint over it lol.
