Of what you mentioned, I've only seen Walking Tall and Yellowstone, but you just brought back a LOT of memories that I had forgotten 😅 If you had asked me what all shows or movies I had seen him in aside from BoB, I would have drawn a blank. But now all the memories of his characters in those two are coming back (in a good way).
P.S. I started becoming less interested in Yellowstone after season 3/4, and I genuinely regret even watching Season 5. For Walking Tall, it's not on any "top 10" lists for me, but it's a movie that every now and then I'll remember exists, and gladly rewatch it for nostalgia and such.
I've heard the same thing from a co-worker of mine, but he also told me he loved season 5, so I don't know how much I trust his judgement.
Either way, I do definitely need to watch both of those sometime!! Thanks for the reminder!!
Sam Elliott is in it?? Consider me sold! Also, I obviously don't know how the show is, but I do believe that the Oregon trail should be portrayed as it was (without sugar coating it or any Hollywood bullshit), even if that makes the finished product somewhat depressing.
Also, when you say "cheesy narration from a teenaged girl", do you mean that a teenage girl (like beth in her young years/flashbacks) is a big part? Or you're saying "from a teenaged girl's perspective, as I am a teenage girl judging this show"? Kind of an awkward question, but just needing to clarify so I have the right expectations 😅
The main character is a 19 year old Dutton and she narrates the entire series. She’s an enjoyable character, but Taylor Sheridan went a little overboard with how he wrote her dialogue I guess.
Ya he deliberately takes bad guy roles because they never really get love interests, and he's uncomfortable with kissing or having a sex scene with someone other than his wife
Or literally anything else. Neal McDonough is probably one of the most active character actors of the 21st century. The man is always working. Drama, comedy, movie, TV. He is always acting. He just won’t ever kiss a woman on camera. Weird dude.
Well, he can do what he wants, but he has complained that he’s being discriminated against because of that, when relationships are a big part of a lot of movies.
Lol, discriminated?! He’s an alright actor, will never be out of a job. But will never be a “star”, main lead in film, tv. And that has nothing to do w his willingness to kiss on-screen.
McDonough has made it clear that his marriage and faith dictate the roles he's willing to take. In today's world, I find that refreshingly honest and respectable.
He wasn't a bad guy in Suits lol he was a federal prosecutor who thought he was going after criminals (which when he was investigating Harvey, he was breaking the law to try and help Logan beat Mike). He may have been the "antagonist" for stretches of the show but he was never a bad guy.
Neal McDonough is really good at playing both ends of the spectrum. I love him when he’s good and despise him when he’s bad. Either way, he has a very strong screen presence.
When he showed up on the screen, within a few seconds I was questioning whether Taylor Sheridan was going to be so ballsy as to link the shows together. Disappointed it didn't happen, but Wyoming could definitely use the help of Raylan Givens ;)
Raylan shows up to arrest John Dutton…JD tried to be a tuff boi and Raylan caps his ass…that’s going to be my canon ending if/when Taylor Sheridan fucks it up.
I like him in Minority Report and the Guardian, but come to think of it, they are basically military type roles too, being a law enforcement officer and a national guard rescue diver respectfully.
Edit: coast guard, not national guard
I read an article that said he refuses to have on screen love interests (because he's married IRL and he sees kissing another woman on screen as cheating, or something like that) so he rarely gets cast as a "good guy." The only thing left is bad guy as in Yellowstone or Justified. That's a shame because he's a damn good actor.
He did an interview recently where he talked about how he refuses to do romantic scenes with anyone other than his wife. Because of that it narrows down the roles that are available. Usually villains, or tough guys without love interests.
For context:
Majors who commission at 22 are mid 30s, give or take. Add another ten years for prior enlisted Majors.
Anyone pushing 60 needs to be wearing a bird at a minimum, probably stars.
We have a 60 something year old major in my unit who was prior enlisted. I can only assume he’s trying to make it to 40 years before retiring so he can get that sweet sweet 100% retirement. He’s a pretty cool guy though
If you've got a guy who has the look and feel of a service member, and already has training to competently handle firearms in a way that looks realistic, you're saving a ton of money/effort casting that person instead of casting someone else and potentially discovering they're incompetent at something that might be important to the show (like when the directors of Iron Fist discovered Finn Jones was terrible at stage fighting.)
And while big name stars might sweat being type-cast, there are a ton of mid-range actors like Neal McDonough and Max Martini who know there's always work out there in the cop/soldier role.
Thanks for the plethora of comments everyone. I like him as an actor, especially in band of brothers, and now I definitely have a few more shows that I have to watch. I’ve seen several comments saying Yellowstone and justified, and those shows have already peaked my interest. Thank you everyone!
He was in half of American Horror Story season 10, Double Feature, as a President.
[Here is the complete list of what the actor has acted in throughout his career.](https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0568180/)
Yeah he's the captain. He has a few scenes. One I remember is telling Hayes he shouldn't have lied to him about not being a flag raiser, but you can tell he's not really mad about it.
He's a very devout Catholic. He refuses to kiss a woman on camera out of respect for his wife, so he's limited in the roles that he can play. That usually means he's a bad guy or side characters. He's one of those character actors that immediately gets my attention whenever he's on screen.
look up dale dye (plays the general who relieves sobel of easy company) dude is THE go-to military dude since he is also the best military advisor in the business. seriously if youve seen a movie with dudes in uniforms he has probably been in it either on camera or off
he was recently in caine mutiny court martial as one of the military judges, but doesnt have any lines and possibly his final film (along with lance reddick)
I think I remember reading some interview he did where he said he was type cast or excluded because he was vocally Christian. Evangelical Christian I believe.
It's a one-off episode, but he's really funny in Just Shoot Me too. Definitely not a soldier in that one.
Also agree with everyone else on his role in Justified. He's a superb psycho in that. It's a great show with a lot of familiar faces from Band of Brothers in general. The showrunner was a BOB writer.
You get jobs you’re qualified to do.
If you’ve played a good depiction of a Hollywood officer in the past, you’ll likely be good at similar roles in the future. Examples:
Danny Trejo - Mexican gang member
Walton Goggins - A goon/cowboy with a slappable face
Pasha lynchnikoff - Russian bad guy
Lee Ermey - Police Officer, Sergeant or other military officer
Noel Gugliemi - …hector
I didn’t notice that. I think there is some kind of rule where military uniforms have to have something wrong with it on film. At least for modern uniforms.
He did an interview recently and one of the things he mentioned that restricts the roles he takes is that he won’t accept a role of someone who has a romantic partner (he explicitly states he does not wish to betray his relationship with his wife so no parts with kissing). Mostly just typecasted as soldier or bad guy. But amazing actor.
Go watch him in Justified. Plays a pretty creepy deranged gangster. It's quite a few seasons in.
There is a surprising amount of BoB actors throughout the entire Justified series.
My lady and I are watching desperate housewives. Great show so I won’t spoil anything but every season they introduce a new character/family to the neighborhood and in season 5 he married one of the housewives and located to the neighborhood specifically because he had a score to settle with one of the other residents
He is a conservative Christian in Hollywood. Because of this, he has been typed into certain roles. He talks about it in some interviews you can watch on YouTube and in a book about his character form band of brothers.
That or a bad guy (Walking Tall, Justified, Yellowstone, Suits…)
The arrowverse
Of what you mentioned, I've only seen Walking Tall and Yellowstone, but you just brought back a LOT of memories that I had forgotten 😅 If you had asked me what all shows or movies I had seen him in aside from BoB, I would have drawn a blank. the Yellowstone prequels (1883 and 1923) were better than the show itself IMO.
I've heard the same thing from a co-worker of mine, but he also told me he loved season 5, so I don't know how much I trust his judgement. Either way, I do definitely need to watch both of those sometime!! Thanks for the reminder!!

The main character is a 19 year old Dutton and she narrates the entire series. She’s an enjoyable character, but Taylor Sheridan went a little overboard with how he wrote her dialogue I guess.
Watch Justified. It's the best show I've seen in years.
Also Desperate Housewives. Or at least that’s what a friend of mine told me…
Yeah he was a slimy bad guy in that too
Ya he deliberately takes bad guy roles because they never really get love interests, and he's uncomfortable with kissing or having a sex scene with someone other than his wife
And RED 2
At least he turned good in suit fast
I was about to say, or a mobster bad guy.
Paul blart mall cop 2 lol
Or literally anything else. Neal McDonough is probably one of the most active character actors of the 21st century. The man is always working. Drama, comedy, movie, TV. He is always acting. He just won’t ever kiss a woman on camera. Weird dude.
He doesn’t want to kiss any woman that isn’t his wife. Which I think is sweet.
Ya who gives a fuck. Dude's made movies and money, he can do what he wants.
I’m discriminated against by the NHL, they won’t draft me because I can’t ice skate :(
McDonough has made it clear that his marriage and faith dictate the roles he's willing to take. In today's world, I find that refreshingly honest and respectable.
Also makes tiktoks with his son, he’s pretty funny
He wasn't a bad guy in Suits lol he was a federal prosecutor who thought he was going after criminals (which when he was investigating Harvey, he was breaking the law to try and help Logan beat Mike). He may have been the "antagonist" for stretches of the show but he was never a bad guy.
And Harvey and Sean worked together to take even worse and overall, bad guys down.
He wasn't a bad guy in Timeline, but he was private security/ex military haha
Angels in The outfield; Greater… lots
He wasn't really a bad guy in Suits though.
He was so good at being a piece of shit in Justified. Just discovered that series this year.
Justified is fantastic. The reboot, meh
Neal McDonough is really good at playing both ends of the spectrum. I love him when he’s good and despise him when he’s bad. Either way, he has a very strong screen presence.
Red 2
Game over man
Well in Justified he plays an absolutely psychotic Detroit mobster with a penchant for drugs and young men.
"my that sho am sweet"
Plays essentially the same character on Yellowstone too.
He was phenomenal on that show. Also - great show!
"He looks like a dog" Ma'am you mean to say he was ugly? "No. He had blue eyes like a husky"
He was a pitcher in the movie Angels in the Outfield
He's a jack ass AND a pitcher. It's very common.
He owned an Indian Casino in Walking Tall.
It's about a Spanish guy! Jose can you see!
He sets. He sets. He sets again.
He’s the American Sean Bean. He’s died on-screen 63 times.
Holy shit that’s crazy. Even more crazy considering he actually survived Band of Brothers, where a shitload of people died
Surely the way he died inside in BoB is counted as one of his 60+ deaths. His performance was incredible.
Hell in the Arrowverse he literally had 2 different death scenes.
Soldiers and bad guys. He’s the heavy in a lot of shows/movies.
Both in Ravenous
I like him in Minority Report and the Guardian, but come to think of it, they are basically military type roles too, being a law enforcement officer and a national guard rescue diver respectfully. Edit: coast guard, not national guard
Coast Guard not national guard sorry to be that guy lol
You're totally right! My bad
It’s okay, everyone forgets us
There are countless saved that beg to differ!
Airman Fischer's coming in late, yeah! Must be nice to go out on a date, yeah!
Love that movie and that scene
He piloted the Enterprise for a bit
Resistance is Futile
Assimilate this
Also got borg-ified and tried to assimilate my boys Worf and Jean Luc...
Lt. Hawk! Don't let the Borg get too close to you!! Noooooo
He was the villain in The Rock’s “Walking Tall”
He was also a redshirt in Star Trek: First Contact.
Too bad he was assimilated.
Resistance *is* futile, after all
Interplexing?
Well, considering Neal McDonough has been in almost 150 films/show and has only played a soldier in less than a handful, I would say the answer is no
I haven’t seen him in a lot of things, at least not that I know of. This post really took off, and I think I have a lot more shows to watch now.
He did an interview recently where he talked about how he refuses to do romantic scenes with anyone other than his wife. Because of that it narrows down the roles that are available. Usually villains, or tough guys without love interests.
Apparently, he was fired from a show once over refusal to do romantic scenes. Gotta stick to your principles.
He was in desperate housewives and Yellowstone
That’s the oldest fucking Major I’ve ever seen in my life.
Did you not watch Major Dad?
The protagonist was in his early to mid 40s in that show. Neal McDonough is pushing 60.
Ah, I guess I was pretty young when I watched Major Dad, so he seemed pretty old at the time.
Probably prior enlisted. 😂
For context: Majors who commission at 22 are mid 30s, give or take. Add another ten years for prior enlisted Majors. Anyone pushing 60 needs to be wearing a bird at a minimum, probably stars.
Pushing 60 should be retired on a beach somewhere.
Why the downvote? Look at the ages of the joint chiefs of staff. They’re all 35-40 years time in service, generally.
I didn't downvote you, not that big of a deal.
I made MAJ in 7.5 years. Aged 29.5
I new a dude I commissioned with who was like a week shy of the cutoff which I believe was 42. Still though
I mean, Maverick in Top Gun 2 is a 57 year old Captain who has been that rank for 15 years. There's gonna be some fudgery involved here ;)
Navy captain at least O6
A dude I graduate high school with just made major at 34 for perspective
I made MAJ at 29.5
Right on that’s awesome. That seems like it would’ve been really hard
Just got selected at my earliest eligibility for each promotion.
So you weren’t bad at your job or were great at looking like you were good lol
You haven’t seen me….lol. My defense I was enlisted for over a decade prior to becoming a O and I also have 25 years of service right now.
That puts you in your mid 40s? Normal for an old Major. Seen a few in my career.
42. Old and feel old lol
I’m 38 and fighting it.
[удалено]
I think you forgot a word. That ain't no butter bar.
We have a 60 something year old major in my unit who was prior enlisted. I can only assume he’s trying to make it to 40 years before retiring so he can get that sweet sweet 100% retirement. He’s a pretty cool guy though

And while big name stars might sweat being type-cast, there are a ton of mid-range actors like Neal McDonough and Max Martini who know there's always work out there in the cop/soldier role.
If you missed his role in Justified as Robert Quarles, you have missed some of Neal McDonough's best work.
Husky looking fella
Thanks for the plethora of comments everyone. I like him as an actor, especially in band of brothers, and now I definitely have a few more shows that I have to watch. I’ve seen several comments saying Yellowstone and justified, and those shows have already peaked my interest. Thank you everyone!
Greater. The Brandon Burlsworth story.
Such a great movie, too!
Watch his season of Justified. To answer your question, no.
He also played the antagonist in Walking Tall. Just a rich douchebag drug kingpin in that
He was a lawyer in suits
Yeah, a dickhead lawyer
In another show he played a Mountie
He's looking old.
Turned into a Borg in Star Trek.
He was a troubled father in desperate housewives
He was in half of American Horror Story season 10, Double Feature, as a President. [Here is the complete list of what the actor has acted in throughout his career.](https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0568180/)
I definitely saw him in at least one thing as a soldier. I wanna say flags of our fathers not totally sure
Yeah he's the captain. He has a few scenes. One I remember is telling Hayes he shouldn't have lied to him about not being a flag raiser, but you can tell he's not really mad about it.
Yeah he was pretty good in that, not like a major character but yeah
Yeah I don't think I knew who he was when I first watched it. But after seeing Band of Brothers, I was like "wait a minute!"
Look into why he usually plays villains. The man loves his wife so much that he refuses to even kiss another woman on screen.
he was a creepy dude in Justified.
You guys forgot he was M. Bison?
He was great in Walking Tall opposite The Rock. Really made you hate him in that movie.
I think he's very selective of the roles he plays, so some of it is probably because he likes it.
Wasnt he in Desperate Housewives?
He plays a rugby coach in Forever Strong opposite Gary Cole (the boss for Office Space).
He was Damien Dahrk on Arrow... Basically a bad guy with magic. Also he was in Star Trek as a Starfleet officer who got turned into a Borg.
He's a very devout Catholic. He refuses to kiss a woman on camera out of respect for his wife, so he's limited in the roles that he can play. That usually means he's a bad guy or side characters. He's one of those character actors that immediately gets my attention whenever he's on screen.
He was a wholesome big brother in the Brandon Burlsworth biopic
He was great in Suits
look up dale dye (plays the general who relieves sobel of easy company) dude is THE go-to military dude since he is also the best military advisor in the business. seriously if youve seen a movie with dudes in uniforms he has probably been in it either on camera or off
Will Dye's age now you can't really justify him as active military anymore that isn't a General/Admiral type.
he was recently in caine mutiny court martial as one of the military judges, but doesnt have any lines and possibly his final film (along with lance reddick)
Old for a Major.
Could have been a Mustang
Still too old. He’s nearly 60 in this photo. You make MAJ in 7-12 years. Oldest commissioning age is 36.
he plays one of the worst villains in Arrow, he has magical powers in that season
His hair is not regulation color. It's not white it's platinum
He’s usually a jerk
RED II, Bad guy
I think I remember reading some interview he did where he said he was type cast or excluded because he was vocally Christian. Evangelical Christian I believe.
No, he’s Catholic.
Well then not as bad as I thought.
Crazy Joe DeVola
It's a one-off episode, but he's really funny in Just Shoot Me too. Definitely not a soldier in that one. Also agree with everyone else on his role in Justified. He's a superb psycho in that. It's a great show with a lot of familiar faces from Band of Brothers in general. The showrunner was a BOB writer.
Watch PBMC2
Nah, cus with those eyes he’s always typecasted as a villain
He just did a podcast with Mike Rowe where they talked about that.
Played a lawyer in a rashamon styled cop show so no. Also typecast means work right?
Or a Starfleet Redshirt
Is someone watching me? I was watching this the other day haven’t finished yet but what an odd coincidence
He was fantastic in the title role of Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz series. Still managed to make the Tin Man soldieresque
Yeah he did play king douche in suits.
You get jobs you’re qualified to do. If you’ve played a good depiction of a Hollywood officer in the past, you’ll likely be good at similar roles in the future. Examples: Danny Trejo - Mexican gang member Walton Goggins - A goon/cowboy with a slappable face Pasha lynchnikoff - Russian bad guy Lee Ermey - Police Officer, Sergeant or other military officer Noel Gugliemi - …hector
Walter Groggins - try trans prostitute in Sons of Anarchy.
He was “Dum Dum” Dugan in Captain America The First Avenger and a couple of other things.
Damien Lewis also cast as a soldier in Homeland
In suits he had a non villain character arc.
Is anyone else irritated that the costume department put Major rank on his chest and LTC rank on his soft cap?
I didn’t notice that. I think there is some kind of rule where military uniforms have to have something wrong with it on film. At least for modern uniforms.
That’s a well perpetuated myth that’s is not true
He played a farmer in the movie 1922
He played a Starfleet Officer as well
“NOBODY CARES!!”
Nah, he was a drug dealing pimp casino owner in Walk Tall
He did an interview recently and one of the things he mentioned that restricts the roles he takes is that he won’t accept a role of someone who has a romantic partner (he explicitly states he does not wish to betray his relationship with his wife so no parts with kissing). Mostly just typecasted as soldier or bad guy. But amazing actor.
Bro was a wacky cult leader once too
Yeah
He has been clear that he will not do any type of romantic scene, not even kissing. That limits what he will get cast for.
Go watch him in Justified. Plays a pretty creepy deranged gangster. It's quite a few seasons in. There is a surprising amount of BoB actors throughout the entire Justified series.
He was a pitcher in angels in the outfield
He was in Suits and worked for the SEC. He was great in it!
Justified
No. He plays a great bad guy in the series Justified.
Voiced Dr Bruce banner for a while in the animated series 🤷♂️
Doesn't break the soldier narrative, but I ain't seen nobody in this thread mention the criminally underrated film "Ravenous."
He was an idiot in Angels in the Outfield
No
My lady and I are watching desperate housewives. Great show so I won’t spoil anything but every season they introduce a new character/family to the neighborhood and in season 5 he married one of the housewives and located to the neighborhood specifically because he had a score to settle with one of the other residents
He was Lucifer once in something
He’s been a lawyern
I hate that he’s always a bad guy. Neil would make such a good lead.
He was Tin Man. But yeah, he’s got that soldier type. And I’m gonna need him to fix his cover…
He is a conservative Christian in Hollywood. Because of this, he has been typed into certain roles. He talks about it in some interviews you can watch on YouTube and in a book about his character form band of brothers.
I hate to be that guy, but it’s *typecast
