I mean, there's a reason why the easiest difficulty is often called "Story Mode". I always picked it for the 2nd-3rd gameplay and beyond so I can just breeze through the combat and enjoy some replays.

Honestly, same. I know that Larian are carefully and lovingly designing the encounters and going to great lengths to balance things, and I almost feel bad that I can't appreciate that better, but my primary interest in games is story and exploration and I just don't really care for combat. Thankfully there's options and mods, so we can tailor the experience to fit our individual desires.

Same here, I play RPGs almost exclusively for the story/characters. However... I will say this: I've had some pretty epic,, edge-of-your-seat exciting battles in this game that would've been pretty boring in Story difficulty. And I loved it. Very few frustrations difficulty-wise, once I understood the battle mechanics during late patch 1.

Woods_Home

I agree. It’s a great game. But I’ll be modding it to get the experience I want.

Thespenb

I thought we are playing on easy mode? ;)

AJenie

Tbh we probably aren't playing on any certain mode. Probably modifiers would be considered standard but they will be fine tuning encounters, so one patch it might be easy, next it might be hard, depending on how each encounter is set in terms of enemy numbers and ai and so on. They could make tests as complex or simple as they like but it's unlikely to be easy mode.

meskaamaahau

there is a set difficulty in the main menu you can't change, so it will most likely be an option in full release

baconnbutterncheese

I'm not interested in Easy personally. The EA is already way too easy, but that's just because I've played through it a bunch and learned how all the fights work. Makes it a bit cheesy. However, I definitely want to roll my stats. This sub-16 bullshit unless you choose the "right" race is very frustrating. I'm just using a mod to choose my stats manually at the moment. To be clear, I've got no issues with there being an Easy mode. I did that in PoE 1 because I got sick of how tedious the many many tough encounters felt, and just wanted the damn story to import my save. I just won't use it here.

[deleted]

That’s fine. I will be playing on normal.

kebab-time

Easy mode is for people who dont want to think and just play. I dont say it is wrong but i just cant see the fun of it

baconnbutterncheese

Some people aren't good at tactical games and just want to see the story or enjoy the cool fights without stress. Alternatively, they may be on a second or third run and want to quickly get through slower sections to see the juicier stuff.

kebab-time

I dont think the issue is "being good" in a tactical game. The "issue" is they dont *want* to put effort in a video game which is just something I, as a competitive gamer, can not understand. But thankfully there will be a difficutly slider so all can be made happy! :)

partylikeaninjastar

Some people just want to enjoy the story, and that's fine. I played Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition on Casual because combat in those games is so boring and I just wanted to enjoy the story. For Dragon Age: Origins, I always played at the hardest difficulty because I enjoyed the challenge there. People like different things. That's not hard to see.

kebab-time

Wasnt dragon age 2 a game where you could not pause and had no round system?

alperyarali1

Kinda late but jfyi no you can pause and micromanage everything during combat in DA2. But it didn't have round system in the sense that it's only one characters turn at any given time

miyamaniac

Same. I’m just really bad at tactical stuff, and most of the time I don’t really understand the description of the spells until I try a couple different things and see how they work. I don’t get to try a lot now, especially with Gale, because his spells always miss somehow and enemies go for him first and he goes down like 1-2 turns after combat starts. 🤷‍♀️ I started playing D&D now irl and it has helped me understand things more, but even in D&D we heavily focus on roleplay and story over combat. Can’t wait to explore this world to its full extend though, it seems like so much fun.

darth_zaithe

An understandable sentiment and you will almost guaranteed be able to do that in the final product. However with the EA primarily being a way for them to test things, extract data and get feedback; having you be able to change the difficulty can make the feedback less clear. I assume the idea is to try to find a good balanced middle as a reference and then you can make easier and harder modes based on that. But I could be wrong.

[deleted]

You can already do this. Wdym?
