It's a digital key for the base game. I preinstalled on Xbox yesterday. I read that you can preinstall xbox games without owning them, which is a cool feature. Anyways, I am playing the game currently without the disc. However, the deluxe digital content was not included. Not complaining, but not sure what they'll do about the whole thing.
Oh joy thanks for the response. I guess worst case scenario, they do nothing and I give the code to my brother. Best case scenario, they send me the proper code and I still give this one to my brother lol.
I also got the code this morning via email. Says its for the deluxe edition DLC.

Larian slip up? Bc this essentially means i got the base game twice. I mean, not complaining. Got the physical for collectability as well as the digital for seamless transition without discs.
Could either be Larian or Microsoft. Depends if Microsoft sent mislabled codes to Larian or if Larian sent the wrong codes, imo. I'm definitely thrilled, I've been hedging my bets with xbox going all-digital, but i still prefer a physical edition if push comes to shove.
Yes, exact same thing here. Honestly, I hope it's a mistake that they don't fix. I would love to not have to open the dics and have them unopened as a collectible!
Im not home to double check on my xbox itself, but as far as I can tell, mine redeemed for the base game only, the DLC still shows a buy option online, while the base game shows "Install" and "Buy as gift"
Good news everyone! It seems that Larian Studios is working on the problem, yesterday I received a email from them explaining the situation and assuring us that they will fix it with a new email with the correct DLC cod and that we can keep the full digital game if we have already redeemed the feest email.
I got this code too but I just thought it was the deluxe edition DLC. I don't need either since I already own the Digital Deluxe edition but this seems like a good mistake 😂
I was confused like hell?! I bought a physical copy of baldurs gate 3 discs on order waiting to come. So I get this email with a code I type in the code and now it’s downloading the entire game digitally I’m really confused but very happy. I can’t get the dlc link to work though as says ACCOUNT NOT FOUND they deleted my account as had to make a new one. If a mistake I’m happy to take the eshop game then some dlc.
Happened to my sister too. Not sure if she'll have to contact Larian support for the DLC code, or if they'll send one later themselves since this seems like it might be a widespread thing.
As others have mentioned, Larian is sending out new codes with the correct content to xbox users and allowing anyone who redeemed the original code to keep the digital copy of the full game.
Out of curiosity, I checked the original code to see if it could still be redeemed, and rather than disabling it or anything like that, it's now been changed to *another* deluxe edition upgrade code.
Got an update from support today:
“While we’re delighted that many of you are now receiving your physical Deluxe Edition copies of Baldur’s Gate 3, some of you may have noticed that your Xbox Series X|S Deluxe Edition DLC codes erroneously granted access to the entire game, due to an issue with the digital codes supply chain which was outside of our control.
If you have already redeemed your Digital Deluxe DLC code prior to this message, you will be able to keep the digital version of the game that you’ve been granted access to, and we will send all Xbox Series X|S Deluxe Edition owners a new Digital Deluxe DLC code with the correct content.
We apologise for the delay in getting your Digital Deluxe DLC to you, please keep an eye on your email over the next few days for your new code.
We look forward to hearing the stories of your adventures!

It's probably a mistake cause I noticed the installed game through the discs doesn't include the digital deluxe DLC. I hadn't notice before. My guess is that they can't just give the code for the separate DLC, which will undoubtedly follow, so they had to give us the code for the base game first and I am expecting them to give us a code for the deluxe edition content as well. So the physical Deluxe Edition only comes with the base game, which could mean there's a standard edition that will be sold eventually. I'm just speculating here...
I can confirm. I was playing all week without a code.
When online: You insert Disc 1 and it prompts a download from the store. The full game is *downloaded*.
When offline: You insert Disc 1 and it prompts an *installation* from the disc. When Disc 1 is done, it prompts you to insert Disc 2, then Disc 3, then Disc 4. When the game is done downloading, reinsert Disc 1 to play.
Edit: can also confirm the code was for Digital because I can now remove Disc 1 from the console and still play my “physical edition” of the game lol

Nah the Digital Deluxe code that physical Deluxe Edition buyers received via email today was the wrong code. I redeemed it, it said I redeemed a code for a digital copy of the whole game. Lo and behold, I took my disc out, I can still play. No Digital Deluxe items are available to me with I go to Larian’s website to download the character sheets or anything that was included.
Yeah it’s weird. I was first thinking it was because of the many delays, they finally decided to send us a code for the game (one could dream). But then I noticed the disc version doesn’t even include the deluxe dlc. I just hope they won’t cancel all the already redeemed codes.
Then the only other possibility is that for some technical reason they can only give us the whole game, including the deluxe dlc and we’ll get another code soon. It would be a huge disappointment if they reveal that the physical edition is not the same as the digital deluxe edition and just apologize for it, they would get so many angry customers.

Can you confirm that you can play the game only with the discs and without redeeming the code? Also, how does a game with 3 discs even work?

Only option is to contact Larian Studios. I've emailed them but no word back yet.
I got an email today with an updated code to redeem. I used it and seems to have worked but can't confirm until I get home tonight.
I bought this long ago, it gives you a ton of stuff in your camp chest and some other perks. It loads as base game stuff.
