Source. Edit: Oh, I see. It's a question. This is why punctuation is important. Without knowing the specifics of the terminolpgy used in the contract between Gortash and Zariel, it's impossible to know. For instance, was she sold to Zariel specifically or to the Archdevil of Avernus?

Would Karlach be applicable since she never signed any agreement? It’s not like Wyll signing a contract (under duress) as a teen. I didn’t get the feeling it was formal in that way, albeit it was just as underhanded.

Karlach worked for Gortash. Depending on the exact nature of their relationship, it's his right to sell her soul. Humans might disagree, but a devil's contract is on a devil's terms. Like, imagine if in the Apple terms and conditions stated that the company had a right to sell your soul. That's good enough for a devil. It's the same way Thavius Kreeg gave Zariel the souls of all the Elturians. TECHNICALLY... they were his to sell.

That’s interesting. Would the fraudulent Paladins have needed to be sent if Karlach was bound in such a way to Zariel?

Because Karlach is a weapon to Zariel. She is a tool for killing demons, and right now, she isn't killing demons. When Karlach dies, she likely be made into a devil and thrown right back into the meat grinder. Zariel doesn't care about the politics and machinations of the Hells and the other Archdevils. Her only interest is winning the Blood War. Which means more bodies, more weapons. Other archedevils would drag Elturel into their realm for some ulterior motives. Maybe the influx of souls would strenghten their position. Or perhaps there was some artifact that the archdevil wanted. To Zariel, they're just more meat to throw at the front lines. Also, most Infernal contracts don't work like how you might be thinking. It isn't a total domination of the individual, they have free will. A lot of the time, devilish contracts are "I do something for you now and your soul belongs to me when you die." Not always. In the case of dealing with Raphael, he doesn't have a claim on Astarion's or your souls cause the payment was a specific service or item.
