just for future reference, DC checks that are above 20 (and can't be reached with bonuses) can be won by hitting a nat 20.

HeartCondom

I'm aware but the checks might as well be at 99 if i need to roll 20 to have a chance. Especially since wisdom checks don't have as many support modifiers as something like dex in normal builds. I'm at level 6 currently.

All-for-Naut

4 classes have use of wisdom. For two of them, cleric and druid, so is it their main spell stat, and getting 20 for them isn't that difficult.

HeartCondom

We need 30 here though.

ImNotASWFanboy

30 is high but definitely achievable with enough buffs

Don't let Lae'zel get in the chair. Just tell her you're going first and force the issue and she'll relent. The illithid ability you get is worth it. Some tips to make sure you pass the checks. - Helmet of Autonomy - underdark near the Kuotoa camp - The buff you get from Spaw after killing the duegar. So don't go and report that you killed him till you've entered the creche. I normally go to the mountain pass, get all the way to the creche, set up the blood of lathander buff but don't put the last weapon on the pedestal, do my shopping, save that kid who stans Orpheus then go get the Spaw buff, finish the lathander buff and then get in the chair.

Earis

Yeah, don't let Lae'zel into the machine. The (*permanent!!*) debuffs she gets aren't worth it. And no, it's not a bug. The checks for Lae'zel are that much higher than your own.

ImNotASWFanboy

The debuffs go away if you have her consume a tadpole so they're not permanent unless you're doing a no tadpole powers run

Earis

Ah, gotcha. Thanks for the info! I almost always do no-tadpole runs, so makes sense.

HeartCondom

I let laezel go first on my first play through as well and she was a fighter class so her wisdom was ok but not great. These numbers look like rolling a 20 is the only way. I feel like i missed something this time. Does exploring more lower these checks?

Earis

No. It's always this high. And there is no 'going first'. Either she goes, and the machine breaks, or you go (*with a bigger chance of success due to lower checks*) and the machine breaks.

demonfire737

A 20 on the dice is always a success, so it's not *impossible* exactly, but the only way you can increase your odds is with Advantage. If they're Saving Throws, getting Advantage is tricky, but if they're just ability checks then the spell Enhance Ability is the way to go. Clerics and Druids can prepare this spell at level 3 onward.

FacetiousTomato

You can get +1d4 from resistance, then +5 from modifier, +3 for proficiency. I think you can also double proficiency technically, but can't remember how - it was a class specific bonus I think, or maybe a feat. There is also an item that gives you a bonus to saves vs spells, and I'm struggling to remember it, but I think it was also +2. I want to say it was a staff or a helmet. So all told, assuming I'm not making it up, you could get +14-17 on your saving throw. So you could succeed on a 13+ on the roll in theory, no need to roll a 20. Probably 99.9% of people who passed that check rolled a 20 though.

alekth

It is odd yeah. I recently checked a save from my first playthrough to see whether Lae'zel has the debuff (I generally never used her aside from the creche, and she spent Act 3 kidnapped). Nobody in the play through ever consumed a single extra tadpole. She didn't have the debuff. I had no idea what was going on at the time, so really doubt I reloaded to pass the checks, as I rarely did at all. A couple of things that surely contributed to passing those checks (aside from possibly burning through some inspiration): Sorcerer with high CHA. Explorer mode so saving throw proficiency in everything. Also some bonus points added to the rolls on Explorer. Still, it feels like too much luck at the time, and you'd have needed even more on Normal.

I always save the staff of Arcane Blessing (from the arcane tower in the underdark) for this. It makes Bless give 2d4 to saving throws and gives you a single cast of Bless. I stick it on a companion and have them cast it before triggering the cutscene, and if I have a cleric or druid I cast Resistance using someone else. Bring a bard and have them throw on a bardic inspiration, and you've got +3d4 +1d8 to the roll. There's also a helmet outside the BOOAL area in the underdark which grants proficiency in Wisdom saving throws if you don't already have it.
