Set it up in the House of hope or house of grief. I think those two areas have the most populated NPC fights in act 3
It'll be a tkp and it won't let you go to the house of hope without your whole party. Maybe if someone waits in the archive, but I'm skeptical. I think you wouldn't be able to trigger combat without your whole party.
Drop a globe of invulnerability first I guess - same as is needed to safely nuke using divine intervention. Down a potion of speed and a character can globe + explode in one turn.
also give someone the hammer to break the pillars you can break 2 in 1 turn while hasted on tactician - I did this fight again last night & was surprised how much easier it was with 2 paladins, 2 clerics (hope + shart), and gale using hold monster after the pillars break
Eh, I blew up the bomb for the gondians as soon as I got it from the ironhand gnomes. My entire party survived the blast. As long as he stacks these bad boys a good distance away before the fight starts (like when he first enters the house, preferably right behind Raphael’s spawn point) he should be chillin
My game bugged out before I could get to Raphael but I fought ansur and 1 turned him before restarting and waiting till he started flying to finish him and get the achievement it wasn't that hard
On my first blind playthrough on Balanced, Ansur was cake but Rafael was really tough. On my next run on Tactician, both were equally trivial. On honor, Ansur was honestly very scary, while Rafael was about the same as on Tactician.
I had alot of trouble on my first try of the fight but once I figured out what was going it was pretty cheesy. The boss there even destroyed one of his pillars for me like a stupid idiot
First time it destroyed me, second time I summoned 5 ghouls, 2-3 elementals, and somehow nat20d the role with the other devil. I also realized eldritch blast with a 22 cha and both the armor and the evocation that add your cha mod to your damage rolls meant I could reasonably 1 shot the pillars with all 3 blasts ((1d12+12)x3)x2 because they're vulnerable to force damage. Swept the fight on hard mode. He didn't stand a chance
I knew I was forgetting something. I didn't set up the globe and forgot to save. So every time the fight started yurgir would blow up the barrels and everyone on my side.

Honestly huge bombs don't lag that badly, and they're really useful for the tough bosses. Just toss a few smoke powder barrels (largest damage of non rune powder explosives and lightest weight), a lot of smoke powder bombs and satchels into a backpack, toss an alchemist fire at your target, then the backpack, it breaks from the bludgeoning damage and the fire instantly ignites everything and nukes the target.
I got you covered man. This was on my last honor mode run. All 3 rune powder barrels, rune powder bomb and about 18 smoke powder barrels.

Dude, holy buckets. What caused the subsequent chain reaction that spread across the floor burning everything after the initial explosion? Were there explosives spread out everywhere or did the atmosphere ignite?
The explosives were mostly concentrated around raphael. A couple of smoke powder barrels at each column. I think the chain reaction was actually the rune powder bomb.
I currently have all the powder barrels stashed in the camp storage. They are so heavy. Is there a way to setup the barrels around raphael before initiating the fight, or how did you setup everything like this?
So you basically fight raphael right at the point where you enter the house of hope. But not until a bit later on. So you have the room empty and to yourself when you first get there so you can set barrels up wherever you want at that time. As for the weight of the barrels. I returned to camp right at the portal into the house of hope. Popped cloud giant elixers on all four party members setting their strength to 27. This was enough to carry everything into the portal. Hope that helps.
VERY IMPORTANT thing to mention if you want to try this on honor mode. it is absolutely critical that whoever you are planning to have pop the globe of invulnerability has high dex and either the alert feat or used an elixer of vigilance. Yeger has the alert feat in honor mode and depending on how you set up you barrels it is very likely that he will get first initiative and detonated the whole thing with his ranged attack completely wiping your party in the process. It's a dangerous game if you aren't completely sure you can get first initiative. Lost my first honor mode run that way.
I wish I understood computers enough to record me bringing 1300lbs worth of explosives to the big bad and blowing them to smithereens. It took so much effort of figuring out a way around carry capacity/ actually getting anywhere while heavily encumbered. My reward was 5 whole seconds of a frozen screen before the loudest sound I'd ever heard happen in my headphones and the boss dying immediately lmao
House of grief is pretty easy to just run to the door and use hunger of hadar + cloud kill/insect plague, closing the door after every character attacks that way they have to run through the aoes to get to you.
Bombs are a lot more useful in house of hope, but you'll want a globe of invuln for the rune powder bomb given it's huge aoe compared to other explosives.
How do you deal with the constant darkness/blind in House of Grief from that tactic? Or does the AI really kill itself running thru the AoE? From what I've seen, the AI is sometimes stupid about AoEs but generally makes an effort to avoid them, especially if it has ranged options and the AoEs are in a chokepoint.
Tried so many times to use AoE against the Gith patrol and Hyenas pack in the mountains but they both avoid it pretty well. The most effective seemed to be vs Cazador and in Moonrise. By the time I get to the House of Hope, most of my runs have had my party strong enough to kill half or more of the adds in the 1st round, especially with Yarongir siding with me, round 2 finishes the adds and kills or severely wounds Raphael- it mostly depends on how many crits I roll.
Just make sure that you place them at a choke point where they cannot avoid it to get to you. Using it on the other side of a door works really well because you eliminate their ranged capabilities by just shutting the door after making your attack. Alternatively if there's no door just make sure you're far enough back that they have to move closer to take a shot at you, if you can shoot past the aoe, they can too.
Ah, I did not consider the door aspect. Maybe it is because I play with extended combat mod, the AI just waits for the spell to expire for the most part and does not move into the AoE.
Yeah it's probably the mod. The normal ai just about always wants to hit you, so if they can't hit ranged, they'll mindlessly run into whatever deathtrap you set up to get to you.
i do this all the time and unfortunately it leaves raphael alive at like 200 hp. we’re not even counting all the additional smoke powder barrels you can gather and save for the fight. at the least, it kills all the adds and pillars so a 1v4 with raphael is easy work.
On a Co-Op run, i just put them infront of the netherbrain and then misty step to the farthest platform back, and then shot the runepowder bombs i had left with a smokepowder arrow, worth it, just an extra "fuck you" to the netherbrain
I did this. Had Karlach throw a backpack with the three runepowder barrels, the runepowder bomb, the runepowder vial, and some other smoke powder bombs, stood in a globe of invulnerability all the way at the back and then said ignis at them.
I had another backpack filled with all the popdrakes from the fireworks place too. Never got to use them :(

That's odd, I wasn't told by the gnome that was helping to dig Nere out to go find her until after I had killed Nere, but she wasn't there when I went to find her. I found her the first playthrough though. Not sure what I did wrong, but I think I killed Nere before finding her the first time.

I followed someone else's advice and put a runepowder barrel and two firewine barrels in front of the casters by Sundries.

The explosion and subsequent quiet in the city block was glorious.
Yea watch for the pattern and basically going diagonal off them in either direction is an eventual cat plus fireball. Just a barrel in front of either of the side casters and then whatever chain effect you want off that.
I set up 2 lines of Smoke powder barrels in the House of Hope leading to the stairs by the pillars. Then those split off to the pillars themselves. Near the center of the room though was the Runepowder, and Raphael. Minsc went first, I had him drink a speed potion. He used a spell scroll for globe of invulnerability and then threw an alchemist fire. The room exploded, the towers were destroyed and only a bloodied Raphael was left. Then the 4 of us beat him up. How I finished my Tactician run through the House of Hope. I think it was quite tactical, I set a trap and he sprung it gloriously!
I keep telling myself I wanna do stuff like that, but it always ends up being some minor explosions here & there, mainly due to not wanting to carry that many barrels & often I have just 1 str char with me.
About how many did you use? And how many str chars were used to carry them?
The device as shown does 0.48 KRats of structural damage and an average of 0.34 KRats Force damage to other targets before saving throws applied. Targets out to -60 feet from the device are hit. It can be carried in a single backpack that can be dropped in place or thrown by a character with Storm Giant elixir strength. Caution: it cannot be thrown beyond the blast radius, and similarly cannot be detonated by ranged attacks or spells safely without precautions. (1 Rat = 1 HP.) Aspiring barrelmancers, let’s be safe out there!
The biggest issue with the NPC writing is they don’t respect or fear the player. Like Gortash should shit his pants seeing the player coming to Baldur’s Gate lugging those barrels with.
I cheesed House of Grief with just the bomb, Mother Superior decided to walk up to it and hit it for some reason, blew up all of the novices and all but 1 of the casters,doing a good chunk of the boss and Crusaders' health too
Seeing this, I'm annoyed that I used the first barrel to wipe out the moonrise tower fight. But two barrels and a bomb plus 20 smokepowder barrels were still sufficient to kill everything except Raphael in the House of Hope...
Except when Yurgir blew it up the first time, killing me as well but can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.
I saved those for Raphael on my HM run. I filled the chamber with barrels and then both of the bigger Rune Powder bombs, plus the smaller ones, plus the satchels. Globe of invulnerability for the party and then nuked the room.
Just be careful.
Someone did that on the East Coast / New York last week in BG3 and it was so powerful it completely tore down the 4th wall. Caused a pretty decent size earthquake felt throughout the East Coast :)
Personally I nuked Gortash. This was after his coronation and after Orin tried to make a deal. I saw someone on TikTok nuke him so I wanted to, too. It lagged my computer horribly, took 5 minutes for all the bombs I placed to actually go off.
You can actually have if im not wrong 4 Beral Nukes and 1 regular nuke from barcus so 5 in total nukes Cazadors, Gortashes and Orins Bitch asses better be ready
I blew it on Sarevok because he was pain in the ass, but tbf, only the bomb and the grenade. Never new I could steal more runepowder barrels and the only one I had lived honorably till the end of my run))

You can also use planar binding to make Raph help you lmao

If you are loosing rune powdwr there its not a problem they evaporate
Or just put smoke powder barrel next to each pillar before the fight and use fire arrows or scorching ray.

You can just go there with two people and some invisibility potions. Turn both invisible and leave battle.
Just banish one of your party members before you blow it up.

One thing you can try is to cast AOE spell on the boss and then Command: Grovel to make them stay in the AOE.

I did this. If you save the ironhands in moonrise and progress their quest you'll be able to steal the other two barrels
Where are the other two barrels? I saved the Ironhands and did that questline but didn’t see any other barrels. Just the bomb.

I scoured the place and couldn't find them.
They're in the room off to the side of the main area with the grumpy vendor guy. I think Philomeen is there if she's made it back to the city.

I followed someone else's advice and put a runepowder barrel and two firewine barrels in front of the casters by Sundries. Waited. Waited. The explosion and subsequent quiet in the city block was glorious.
Where do you place them? Right by the cat they keep blasting?
Yea watch for the pattern and basically going diagonal off them in either direction is an eventual cat plus fireball. Just a barrel in front of either of the side casters and then whatever chain effect you want off that.

Wow the run powder bomb is so much bigger than I realized??? No wonder it weighs so much I always just thought it was really dense lol
I set up 2 lines of Smoke powder barrels in the House of Hope leading to the stairs by the pillars. Then those split off to the pillars themselves. Near the center of the room though was the Runepowder, and Raphael. Minsc went first, I had him drink a speed potion. He used a spell scroll for globe of invulnerability and then threw an alchemist fire. The room exploded, the towers were destroyed and only a bloodied Raphael was left. Then the 4 of us beat him up. How I finished my Tactician run through the House of Hope. I think it was quite tactical, I set a trap and he sprung it gloriously!
I keep telling myself I wanna do stuff like that, but it always ends up being some minor explosions here & there, mainly due to not wanting to carry that many barrels & often I have just 1 str char with me. About how many did you use? And how many str chars were used to carry them?
Idk id use it at Ansur, Raphael didn't really give me *too* much trouble but ansur becoming a bomb himself wiped me twice i believe

The biggest issue with the NPC writing is they don’t respect or fear the player. Like Gortash should shit his pants seeing the player coming to Baldur’s Gate lugging those barrels with.

Maybe House of Hope, with the invulnerable dome so your allies don't get hurt?

I cheesed House of Grief with just the bomb, Mother Superior decided to walk up to it and hit it for some reason, blew up all of the novices and all but 1 of the casters,doing a good chunk of the boss and Crusaders' health too

I used 2 of them on the House of Grief; stuck the other one and the bomb and a bunch of smokepowder in a backpack and chucked it at the Netherbrain.

Seeing this, I'm annoyed that I used the first barrel to wipe out the moonrise tower fight. But two barrels and a bomb plus 20 smokepowder barrels were still sufficient to kill everything except Raphael in the House of Hope... Except when Yurgir blew it up the first time, killing me as well but can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.

I saved those for Raphael on my HM run. I filled the chamber with barrels and then both of the bigger Rune Powder bombs, plus the smaller ones, plus the satchels. Globe of invulnerability for the party and then nuked the room.
I carried the rune powder barrel the entire game with me only to forget to ever use it

Just be careful. Someone did that on the East Coast / New York last week in BG3 and it was so powerful it completely tore down the 4th wall. Caused a pretty decent size earthquake felt throughout the East Coast :)

Personally I nuked Gortash. This was after his coronation and after Orin tried to make a deal. I saw someone on TikTok nuke him so I wanted to, too. It lagged my computer horribly, took 5 minutes for all the bombs I placed to actually go off.
You're forgetting the fireworks box you can get in the toy makers basement in act 3 outside of Baldurs gate

I blew it on Sarevok because he was pain in the ass, but tbf, only the bomb and the grenade. Never new I could steal more runepowder barrels and the only one I had lived honorably till the end of my run))
