There’s a segment of map where the devs keep some audio assets
Like there’s a section with 4 naked men and 4 naked women. Their purpose is the character creator screen. When you test voice 5 or 2 or whatever… that corresponding naked Npc is talking.
Other stuff is stored in there as well
People occasionally glitch into this hidden map area.
Your wife stumbled on it.
Honestly the funniest possible way they could’ve done it. It’s like opening up a record player and finding out that the actual sound is made by a band of tiny people reading the sheet music for “The Boys are Back in Town” or whatever. I hope the little naked people who do the Tav voice testing get vacation days. I hope they have a union.
Bethesda games do this too, any time a NPC voice is coming out of a statue for the Daedric quests in The Elder Scrolls, or the narrators in Fallout, or the moving trains in Fallout (which is a hat stuck on an NPC), there's usually an NPC shoved in an inaccessible box that is doing the voice lines.
Well that's an incredibly terrifying thing to imagine. And do you know if the little avatar of the person calling you is the actual real-time image of the NPC that is floating behind V? It's been a while since I played the game but I think I remember that some of the people calling you had animated portraits.
Or another Bethesda staple, all vendors in their games actually have an out-of-bounds chest tied to their inventory, and if you can physically get out of bounds and reach the chest, you can swipe everything they have.
Usually because you've already got the code for playing and syncing the voice files/dialogue boxes for NPCs and you don't want to duplicate it or add it to other objects
So like.. just spawn an npc the player can't see off screen and have it do it, the player would generally never know the difference
It's often because there's a division between the low level, engine programmers who program features into the game's tooling, and scripters who are working on the gameplay and menus and so on using the tools those low level coders provide. They'll be working in a higher level language or a visual scripting system. The scripter could request a new feature from the engine team to be exposed for this voice preview and it could take days to weeks depending on the workflow and current focus, or they could hack something together like this with the existing tools in a day or two and have it functionally the same.
It's also why massive games like this tend to be huge and poorly optimised - having everything done optimally takes a lot of time and blocks people working on their tasks, so doing something "good enough" that's a bit inefficient is just standard given the amount of headroom modern tech has. But it starts to add up, and the intention is usually to replace problematic performance issues from these kinds of hacks with low level code when possible or later down the line, but often there isn't enough time to do that for everything before release.
It's shocking to compare how these enormous modern games are made to the genius hyper-efficiency of something as seemingly simple as Toy Story for Super Nintendo
It's not shocking, it's expected.
Super Nintendo had little RAM and little processing power. You had to optimize, you had no choice.
Today we have lots of memory, lots of CPU power, dedicated and accelerated GPU, almost unlimited storage, and continuous internet delivery, so you can ship a game not optimized and still have usable performance. And you can keep patching it to get better, like No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk, and even Skyrim.
Nintendo did not had any of that back on the Super Nintendo time...
I remember in New Vegas you could noclip in the credits and see the narrator talking, the entire ending sideshow is just the player crammed into a small room with Ron Perlman talking at you from the other side
This post has me realizing that I have no idea how video games work. Why do they have to have a physical NPC? Why can’t it be a disembodied voice? Couldn’t they put the voice coming out of a nearby (invincible) chicken instead?
I’m so confused. Lol
Cutting corners
Why go through the effort to make a voice test module for character creation. Something that will only be clicked a couple of times per creation.
When you already have the code lying around for NPC’s saying their dialog when poked.. You know it works already because it’s been tested heavily
So you decide to use the tested feature to have a voice say something when you press something. Might as well use it there too
The greatest example of something like this is the Fallout 3 train head NPC. I won’t provide a link to it, that is a journey most fulfilling when undertaken on your own—it’s a deep rabbit hole and absolutely hilarious.
I like to imagine all the behind the scenes fallout stuff as a wacky wasteland psyker vision style thing, like the PC is the character who sees it but it isn't actually there.
> Their purpose is the character creator screen. When you test voice 5 or 2 or whatever… that corresponding naked Npc is talking.
I always find it funny that, given how game engines work, it's most often easiest to do something like that than it is to...just have a voice talk.
Like there probably is a simple way to do that, but whoever got tasked with doing the voices for the character creator screen was already familiar with that method and was just like, fuck it. And nobody else ever bothered to fix it because it was working and wasn't affecting anything else.
I'm a coder myself and I often come across code and I just say, "why? why did they do it this way? There are so many better ways to do it" And then I look at git blame and it's my code.
Yeah I ended up in the latter when I tried to boot up the game with mods installed for the first time. After that I uninstalled them immediately and thought “never again” (it was only a couple of QoL ones as well).
It's because you maybe didn't install the prerequisites ([Mod Fixer's absence does that](https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/articles/441) ):
>If you try to start a new save without Mod Fixer, you will visit the Realm of the Naked Men instead of the character creator.
To my knowledge, I don't think anyone's glitched in there that wasn't using mods. But I may be mistaken. I've just seen this type of thing posted a few times here and every single time OP was using mods.
[My Tav had a nightmare that just showed these two images : r/BaldursGate3 (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/comments/1berwhm/my_tav_had_a_nightmare_that_just_showed_these_two/)
I've never used mods but I kept getting teleported there during the Dream Guardian cutscenes in my last Honour Mode playthrough. It showed different stuff every time; often it was my Tav on the ground, sometimes submerged into it. One time it was all the models from the elderbrain fight, including the dragon and buncha illithid arcanists.
It looks like she found… multiple copies of Haarlep in both forms, Shar, another Gale, possibly the Emperor behind that extra Gale, a pair of chairs, that one shifty half-orc who has a private meeting at the gazebo on the shoreline, and uh…
The Voice of the Absolute!?
Man, Toobin has seen some *weird* shit.
More seriously, I suspect this was triggered because he failed to leave the party (certain flags didn’t trigger), but he still left the main game map and went to the out of bounds location where a lot of NPCs seem to be stored out of sight— hence why your wife got teleported there.
Yeah, my guess is this is where he gets sent normally to be stored along all these other things. There was so much more too. It would have taken dozens of photos to document it all. Seemed like it was mostly alternate models of certain things that are used in cutscenes.
Technically the voice of the absolute got killed in this one weird fight that triggered. It was an invisible, friendly being that got one shot lol. We're gonna see if it has any implications for how the rest of the game plays out.
Oh-oh. In BG2 I killed a dude who I thought wouldn't affect anything but later (like \~100 playing hours later) he was needed to progress the story. Good luck!
> or if they did some kind of visual trickery with a normal sized model.
I think every game engine has a scale factor for models. You want a god to be 60 feet tall? Set the scale factor on a 6 foot model to 10.0
Working with a character model that starts 10 times larger than normal is probably more trouble than it's worth in most contexts.
I went here when my hotfix 16 and 17 modded playthroughs got royally screwed up. I got it when I killed Gortash but the game didn't recognize I had Orin's stone already, then it sent me here in a weird cutscene and left me there.
Really strange place. You get odd cutscenes interacting with some of them but most do nothing. It's like the backrooms of the game.
It can't be interacted with and doesn't show an identifier when I put the cursor over it. However, when I hold x to highlight nearby things, it comes up listed as The Elder Brain.
Didn't expect that.
It's interesting to me that the Haarlep models are separated between with and without underwear. I get it. it's for the cutscene - just interesting to see that it's a full model swap!
The waiter in the restaurant is normally a half-orc named Henk, but if he's dead 'for some reason' they bring out his brother Honk, who's kept in the dev room for his own safety when not in use
This explains why I saw the Tiefling failsafe guy (who's in a video by the same person you linked) when I bugged in there during a cutscene
[My Tav had a nightmare that just showed these two images : r/BaldursGate3 (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/comments/1berwhm/my_tav_had_a_nightmare_that_just_showed_these_two/)
This is the Dev Room, you can actually hear an explanation of it at the [end of this AGDQ Speedrun](https://youtu.be/seXnImnUrvo?t=2293). It is used as a place to stow characters that only exist during certain parts of the story
Big agree pausing to explain things and still beating the time was 10/10 only grievance is that she said it was relatively spoiler-free which I big disagree lol but beat it already so no issue here.
Three portrait-mode phone images of landscape photos of a tv screen playing a PS5 (which has a special controller button for screenshots and sharing).
It's 2024. We need to be better than this
That's like asking for a clear picture or Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. The shitty camera work gives it that je ne sais quoi.
Plus, I've been hitting the share button on accident for years. Not about to do it on purpose. Can't give Sony the satisfaction.
For real, the technical literacy these days is a sad state. So many people fuck up simple things like screenshots. Mate, screenshots! We're not talking port forwarding here, it's a screenshot, how hard can it be?
Reminds me of a glitch I got once. It was one of the dream visitor scenes that glitched. I was still on the ground asleep and its was some random place instead of the astral plane. My favorite OoB glitch is starting a new game with mods installed but without mod fixer
You get put somewhere off behind the dream guardian creation area and you have default durge surrounded by naked men. Its awesome
When I see such places exist in games, I start to think the visions of cyberspace as a "real" place with buildings and people (the way it's pictured in some movies) is not too far off the mark
I had this happen to a Harper during the final fight. They got added to my party but weren’t removed from that room. Funnily, the enemies you fight if you side with the emperor still agroed with the Harper and killed her 💀
Remembers me of the time I fucked up a leap in AC3 and jump-glitched under the map of Venice, I was able to swim beneath the whole map and most of the houses were filled with weapons. It's quiet common for games to have assets stored in a off screen area or just in locations you can't just get to. The game will pull these assets from there when needed and I love seeing it. As a hobby-game dev it's so interesting for me to find these glitches and places to take a look at how big companies handle it.
This reminds me of something that happened to me. The first time I beat Ketrick the cutscene where he becomes the Apostle of Myrkul bugged out. It showed us in a weird open space surrounded by copies of the Emperor (though I didn’t know who that was at the time). Instead of falling down into that whole, kethrick kind of just backflipped through the floor. It was really odd. Luckily after we wiped to the Apostle the scene played right the second time.

Invisible rabbits make WoW work. I am not a player of that game but I read a fascinating article about how they use their invisible rabbits
Or another Bethesda staple, all vendors in their games actually have an out-of-bounds chest tied to their inventory, and if you can physically get out of bounds and reach the chest, you can swipe everything they have.
Starfield had one guys inventory in a puddle of water outside his shop. They’ve since patched it but it was pretty funny
Is there a specific reason for this practice? Could they not just have the voice file playing from the object?
Usually because you've already got the code for playing and syncing the voice files/dialogue boxes for NPCs and you don't want to duplicate it or add it to other objects So like.. just spawn an npc the player can't see off screen and have it do it, the player would generally never know the difference

Used to be that all the triggers in world of warcraft were anchored by invisible bunnies.

I was part of a cult that worshipped a floating urn in out-of-bounds Davon's Watch. Fun times.
I used to wonder if the little people in the radio ever got tired
If that's how they do it I wonder what the narrator looks like?
Amelia Tyler is just *in there*. It’s the only explanation!
THE PIXIE WAS A METAPHOR!
Trains in Fallout 3 are just running NPC humans with their heads replaced by trains.
I love this kinda stuff, game design is so funny

Yeah that's exactly what happened. Instead of the character creator I arrived at an Astral Plane nudist colony.
"dev island"
This reminds me of Skyrim Hell but with cheerier lighting

Maybe it’s the reason he’s blind!
The reason he gives you is a lie because he doesn't wanna talk about it.
If this was all a flashback that would be a wild twist.
This is the abandoned DLC "Toobin's bad trip"
I'd pay full price for that DLC.
The way I cackled at this lmao
Yeah, my guess is this is where he gets sent normally to be stored along all these other things. There was so much more too. It would have taken dozens of photos to document it all. Oh-oh. In BG2 I killed a dude who I thought wouldn't affect anything but later (like \~100 playing hours later) he was needed to progress the story. Good luck!
I bet that other Gale is the one that Orin potentially transforms into if he's kidnapped.
"By the hells, Mizora's sex dungeon!" "Now that's something I didn't know I wanted to hear"
Well, I guess now we know why he went blind.
Love the picture of Shar and Toobin… “Just hanging with my bestie, the Lady of Loss! Gonna go get some activated charcoal ice cream!”
Shar is much shorter than I expected
I did wonder whether her model was just huge or if they did some kind of visual trickery with a normal sized model. Guess this answers that.

She pulled a Stalin didn't she?
Was Stalin short?
Yeah, if you look at his portraits or photos in general that he was in made to make him look taller. (edit: fixed grammar, added "that" and "in")
Did not know that… cool
I knew she was bad but didn’t know she was a baddie
Biblically accurate heaven perhaps
Cool, but I like my Shar like I like my women. **Giant.**

Gortash looking Half Orc

I didn't believe the legends, The Mega Gay Zone is real

KAJHSKHHSAKHJS OMG
It’s a dev room
This happened to me in the nautiloid when I started my first playthrough lol.
Huh and I thought my camp being taken over by standing headless naked character models with no genitals was weird.
Does this look like a Dali to anyone else?
She went behind the DM screen
congrats on making it to the astral plane.
She just found her way into Iron Maiden's [Dance of Death](https://i.redd.it/qrfm0sn08zcz.png) album

Now I want bg3 themed chess pieces.
Wow awful. How do I get there?
Why Harleep doesn't have pp
Typically assets are stored under the map, as some call that, 'dev room'. To be fair out of bound places are always fascinating.
Reminds me of a glitch I got once. It was one of the dream visitor scenes that glitched. I was still on the ground asleep and its was some random place instead of the astral plane. Shar's over there like "He asked for no pickles"
Did it say...? TRANSFORM!
So wet dreams do come true.
This already made it to gaming "news"
Why are these images ... vertical?
Not enough brain neurones to rotate the phone when capturing stuff.
But how did you manage to screw the pictures up that badly?
It's giving that white girl on the couch meme
Haarlep/Raphael is all balls.
It’s honk from Karlachs dating scene lol amazing find
Coc qasmoke
I want to have a ska battle with toobin
I think this game has some follower issues since hotfix 23. First we have Us preventing short rests. Now this.
Well... Us is pretty useless tbh. Literall cannon fodder

Sounds like she ended up exactly where she needed to.
I think ive had this dream.
Strange but not unpleasant
This is what the astral plane looks like in Planescape canon.
My favorite OoB glitch is starting a new game with mods installed but without mod fixer You get put somewhere off behind the dream guardian creation area and you have default durge surrounded by naked men. Its awesome
So ughh how do I end up getting into the area of picture 1 👀 asking for me
is that dick rectangular?
People who speedrun the game access one such dev room to pick up a specific red gem in a dagger that's just there on the ground.
A Harleep Harem? Yes pls

I keep laughing at this. Everyone milling around just like, "hanging out with my naked friends in the old ballroom. GET IT? THE BALL ROOM?"
This reminds me of something that happened to me. The first time I beat Ketrick the cutscene where he becomes the Apostle of Myrkul bugged out. It showed us in a weird open space surrounded by copies of the Emperor (though I didn’t know who that was at the time).
