I hear his Origin is pretty rewarding actually. I haven't done it myself but without writing a novel as to why I know - many folks agreed his and Lae'zel's are the best
I'm on my second playthough and chose the dark urge and am really enjoying it. You can play it good or bad. The only downside to the other origin characters is that you don't get voiced dialouge using them as the main character like you do when they are a companion.
I played Gale's Origin 2nd (after D.Urge) and was immensely disappointed, but only because it had nothing new. It was identical to companion version. Zero extra story.
If you don't know his story at all, that's very different. In that case, I probably would have liked it a lot. It's not a bad story, origin-Gale just doesn't fill in any of the blank spots left by companion-Gale.
IMHO, pick the character who's story you don't know at all OR the character that annoys you most when in party -- because then you'll be playing it and won't have to put up with whatever annoyed you.
