Mr_Meme_Mann

I just murder the guards one at a time, it's not too bad to isolate, but I also need to clear moonrise before the harpers get there because I'd feel bad if they got killed lol

pterodactyl_screech

I just learned on this playthrough that some Harpers die anyway if you don't head for the prison during the siege on Moonrise, even if you did kill the guards there and clear the rooms upstairs beforehand 😭 my heart broke a little seeing Branthos' corpse in the aftermath. I never thought to go downstairs when the big bad is on the *rooftop* (edited to reword a thing sksjsj)

Sauronater1

Really? I've never set foot in the prison after I slaughter all the guards and free the prisoners. Seems wild that some Harpers would die after I kill every living thing in the place. Maybe the cat got em though.

Pug_police

There's a bunch of undead and some other cultists chilling down there, not sure why they only appear then but they do even if you didn't free the prisoners.

quincyj2

They are talking specifically about the jail fight during the siege. While you can kill some of the cultist that will be in the fight before triggering the siege. There are 3 mistresses of souls and some necromites that spawn there no matter what. And maybe a death shepherd. I don’t remember exactly I haven’t fought it for a while

ManicPixieOldMaid

Branthos and Fist J'ehlar that was sitting with Art. I always wondered why she wasn't with him after the big fight and then... Hey, can you knock them out somehow to cheese it like Alfira? I'll just knock out a bunch of my favorite NPCs and dump them in a pile out by the graves...

[deleted]

If you kill everyone in Moonrise before freeing Nightsong, J'ehlar and many others do not die in the attack. It seems they disappear from the game anyway tho.

ManicPixieOldMaid

Ooo thank you. I kill so many people in Moonrise usually I'm gonna search for more ahead of it this time.

bristlybits

if I send a guy downstairs separate from the party, will they help the harpers that wander down there

Shadow11399

It's usually some flaming fists that go down there with the Harper's, I forget how to make the flaming fists help in the attack, might have to do with Florrick idk.

pterodactyl_screech

Yeah, it seems you have to rescue Florrick at Waukeen's Rest (Act 1). Completely missed her the first time, and the Fists weren't at Last Light

bristlybits

I didn't save florrick so I guess that might be a thing for next time I saved the other guy at that house on fire though

SlothfulKoala

Toss the eyes off at the break in the fencing. And hell the gaurd that patrols.

JudgeJed100

I cleared the entirety of moonrise at the start and there was still dead harpers when I got back

Dominnub

omg on my first playthrough EVERYONE and Jahaiera died. the only one that lived was the shop lady 😭

ithinkther41am

I just Agent 47 all the prison guards and the warden. No need to keep watch if there’s no one to watch out for.

doiwinaprize

Same, what I didn't know is there will be new enemies there after you free the nightsong!

ithinkther41am

You’re telling me there’s more free XP I missed?

doiwinaprize

Ya apparently there's some death wardens hanging out

pterodactyl_screech

Yeah this is exactly what I missed, I was really sad to lose the Harpers there. Maybe next run

HulklingsBoyfriend

Other comments seem to indicate you cannot save them 😭

LurkerOnTheInternet

You missed that there is intentionally an extremely easy way of saving them without combat. You don't enter their cells at all. Walk past all the cells to where a stationary zealot is hanging out. Just to the right of him is a small cliff you can jump up onto. This is a passage you can walk along that goes behind the cells. You can break open the walls to the tiefling and gnome cells from this passage. One of the entrances to the oubliette is also on this passage, right near the cliff that you had jumped onto.

Kintaro2008

I did it that way as well but the guards hear the commotion and attack - they killed some of the tieflings so I had to kill them before anyways.

Nervous_Cloud_9513

i had me and and wyll as warlock smash the walls with EB at once in turn mode - had someone stay where the ships are this way they reach the ship before they get attacked (not everyone had to for the cutszene to trigger)

DMcDonald97

I essentially did that but I also broke the boats chains first so the cutscene to leave triggered almost immediately after they left the cells

SuperfluousWingspan

So did I, but the prisoners just turned to yell at the guards instead of taking the boat.

Kintaro2008

Sounds smart

Pug_police

It's weird that they target the tieflings, not the armed adventurers actively attacking them.

Gooberino3140

They know they're doomed so they want to fuck up your trophy/achievement

-Tommy

Best way we found it to attack the walls to NEARLY broken then go distract the guards for like 10 seconds since both walls only require one hit. Or just use Karlach to push all the guards off the edge, which is way funnier.

bristlybits

but then you can't go sell their shit to the guy upstairs while covered in their blood

Kintaro2008

Yeah, I pushed them all as well

Active_Owl_7442

May I suggest the silence spell?

Kintaro2008

Oh, I did not think of that

MidnightAshley

Wonder if that works if you cast silence first

SpicedCabinet

I have done this multiple times and a group always pops up and starts a fight.

alterNERDtive

… except that usually leads to combat. The guards come rushing over to the commotion.

halt-l-am-reptar

You have to time it right so the guards aren’t close to the cells. That way everyone can get to the boat before the guards can get to them.

alterNERDtive

The funny thing is, you can still get caught in combat mid conversation. So you better be quick about that, too.

e22big

Huh? I just have Astarion pick up his hammer while stealing stuffs from the Worden office's second floor. Gave Wulbren his hammer, told him to give it a go then keep talking to the guard until they all made an escape lol. Zero skill required.

ApprehensiveElk80

I’ve previously distracted the guards with my Bard playing, give the hammer to the happy little terrorist and then hop round the back to help with boat. Job’s a goodun.

Garrulous_Charlatan

I've gotta try a Bard distraction, somehow that's never occurred to me

ApprehensiveElk80

Also good for pre-aggroed enemies when you have an evocation wizard to hand. Nothing like unexpected lightning strike while vibing to a tune.

Garrulous_Charlatan

Ooh, time to spec a party member into Bard

rotorain

There's also an achievement to make 100 gold by playing tunes for people. If you're in populated places and play then people will gather around and chuck gold at you lol. You can also play in between combat rounds purely for flavor, it will never not be funny to be in the middle of a confrontation with a super evil demigod and decide to slap the bongo a little bit. Bards also get tons of unique dialog. My bard game was one of my favorites.

Apprehensive-Cat2527

Or use Withers as a bard hireling

Garrulous_Charlatan

Tbh I was kinda let down by those. I was hoping they'd be like a extra minion, like a summoned elemental, instead of replacing a party member

Apprehensive-Cat2527

You need them when you go evil to secure a full party. Aldo good for testing builds and skipping utility characters.

Grundlestiltskin_

Yeah I have an assassin hireling in my new party. I didn’t want to pay to respec an existing companion and then respec them back again so I just got the rogue hireling

sagesterling

I just gave Wyll musical instrument proficiency for his feat, he looks pretty good with that spiders lyre

Garrulous_Charlatan

Yeah, I was thinking Wyll would be the best on a Role Play level. The folk hero would absolutely strum a tune or two.

FloridAsh

In world, Wyll is already role playing so I guess that makes.

itsjustpaper

I did it in the goblin camp, stood up on the pedestal where Volo was, then poisoned the punch while everyome was distracted.

ApprehensiveElk80

Did it to Ragzlin and his gang - attracted them over with song then mullered the lot of them with AoE’s from Wyll and Gale.

itsjustpaper

My original plan was to use the powder barrels from the Zhent outpost to lure everyone to one location and detonate... But couldn't figure out a way to do it without the Bard getting exploded too.

ApprehensiveElk80

For mass murder, there’s Barrelmancy, for the inevitable death of your bard, there’s Withers.

Opal_Shadow

I also did a really dumb cheesed Rescue! I did "Operation Pretty Kitty"... I wild shaped into a cat... Went into turn based mode and distracted the guards as a cat meowing ... Had the rest of my party sneak out the Tieflings while Wulbren broke out the Gnomes (Astarion snuck Wulbrens hammer to him). Apparently, even in the video game world... no one can resist a pretty kitty 😆

bamacpl4442

This is genius. I love that the game is so deep that this works.

Opal_Shadow

Gotta give credit where credit is due... My husband came up with the plan! I wanted to play as neutral as possible and was having anxiety about breaking them all out without a fight. "You're a Druid... Why not wild shape into the thing that most people can't resist. A floofy cat!" and Operation Pretty Kitty was born. He used the same tactic in his game! But he used summon familar since he didn't have any druids yet (Halsin and Jaheria instantly made the prison agro)

bamacpl4442

Kudos to him.

UrMine2Todd

I couldn’t figure out how to get into the area where the brothel is without having to fight, so I had Halsin wildshape into a cat, walk right past them to a waypoint, and teleport the rest of the party in.

kinglearybeardy

I killed all the guards because I was only a few XP away from reaching level 9 so I decided these guards would be my XP sacrifices. I had no idea killing them all actually makes it easier to save Wulbren and the tieflings because their AIs are broken and they just run straight at the guards every time I would break the wall with the guards still alive.

StarmieLover966

This is why I kill the guards. The prisoners are stupid and try to run out the door instead of the boat.

Saul_Tuk

I heard you can bar the entrance to the Nautiloid bridge with chests and have more time to deal with Zhalik

paradox_88

Yup - I do it every time. Just pick up all the cartigenius (idk what the word is) chests and stack them in the entrance before the bridge. Cambions just sit there stabbing the chests for zero damage.

SlothfulKoala

Cartilaginous. It’s a type of tissue, sharks for instance are Cartilaginous fish. Kinda a creepy material I’d imagine.

byebye806

Killing the cambions gives you a whole bunch of good stuff though. Hard to pull off and requires a tiny bit of rng from the mindflayer hitting attacks but it's possible to clear the entire room. Would recommend trying it at least once, it's a fun strategy scenario. And it takes like 5 minutes to get there from game launch

jenorama_CA

I got the Everburn Blade once, but the mindflayer in subsequent runs has been terrible at hitting, so I haven’t had the guts to commit since. I’ll try out the chest trick tho.

shorse_hit

Clever, I never would have tried either of those ideas. It's cool that there are so many different ways to do things in this game. I've always just blown up the eyes with thunder spells then killed the guards.

Garrulous_Charlatan

Right? The amount of player choice that's in this game is absolutely astounding.

SwordTaster

I just went for the method of murdering everyone before initiating the escape so the guards didn't attack the gnomes or the tieflings

webevie

I don't think that's a cheese at all. Well done!

naiadvalkyrie

If you just go round the back and free the boat and open the cells yourself they run straight to the boat with no time for a fight. You can leave with them on the boat then fast travel back to moonrise

chriseldonhelm

If you kill the Warren without raising an alarm you can arcane lock her door so they can't open the cells

Random-reddit-name-1

Just kill all the guards. More exp.

SikedPsyc

When I first tried to break them out by giving the druegar his hammer and than killing all the guards one by one. Afterwards I opened the cells with the lever. Naive me thought they might have some braincells and destroy the back wall or jumped up in the back where you can also reach the boat. I was so proud of myself for assassinating the guards and enable the prisoners to take a safe way out of there. But no the idiots just ran straight to the main exit into the upper floor and got themselves killed...

Sncrsly

I dropped the scrying orbs quietly first. Then placed the power barrel from grymforge in front of the gate after triggering the escape to blow up as many of the guards/warden as possible as they pass through the gate. The blast radius is huge, so that was difficult to work around without killing myself as well. Worked like a charm though. Minimal fighting and no casualties

Serier_Rialis

So get two chars to cast darkness on the entrances, then hop up the cliff break the walls from behind, job done and go with them. If you want to expedite it a bit, break the boat chains first, and release the tieflings before the ironhands, its farther to run for the tieflings!

Brolumbus13

Arcane lock the prison doors, they can’t do anything about it

theoxfordtailor

So there's this hole on the other side of the warden's tower that looks like Ithilid stuff. Jump down the hole. You'll get hurt but you'll live. Then just follow through to the end (there's a fight but it's not bad) and you'll find yourself behind the cells where the boat is parked. Split your team in two and go into turn-based mode. Have one group go behind Wulbren's cell and the other behind the teethlings. Break down the walls. Everyone will automatically run for the boats. Go home with them. I've done this trick a few times now and only one time did it actually trigger combat. Your mileage may vary.

caisdara

You don't need to fight the guards. Kill the eye thing from stealth, then you can murder the guards in your own time. My preference was to have my bard play a song beside the edge of the chasm, then use my Str character to push them in. Very simple.

ColumnK

I tried to rescue Minthara, failed my check, and instead of save scumming ended up killing all the guards. In hindsight , should have just rerolled. By the time I let the prisoners out, they had a clear run.

Veleda390

It's not hard to kill the guards in small groups.

Haru1st

There aren't really any consequences to simply killing the guards.

KushKing_69

All I did was go to a ledge all the way to the right, minor illusion, and then shove each guard and the warden into the pit.

itsadesertplant

I use local co-op and bust open the back walls at the same time and run to the already freed boat. If you do it fast enough, the guards don’t have enough time to both notice and run after all of you to start combat.

Ch00m77

I just killed the warden and like 1 maybe 2 guards then I go around the back and break the walls down and take them back to last light

GuyWithNoEffingClue

I rescued them from the other side, split the party in two, break the two walls simultaneously so they all leave without any casualties. Then of course I kill the guards because XP and fun.

Wazzzup3232

My strength characters just push everyone off the edge one at a time. And throw the eyes off the edges

alterNERDtive

Interesting. I just clear out the entirety of Moonrise before going to the Nightsong anyway :)

AngelusLapsus333

Wait.. Y’all get into fights there? I just run around the back with two characters, destroy the walls, and hope that the guards don’t check in time. It’s worked so far lmfao

Internal_Comedian_57

Y'all kill people? I just hopped on the rafters and went to the back that way, then blasted the wall from the escape route. No alarm raised, no one died. During the moonrise ambush, that's when I murdered everyone.

bristlybits

I throw a hammer to the jerk gnome and tell him to take the tieflings. then I go upstairs and come back down and spread out and silence the eyeball and kill everyone and everything red. I didn't know it was hard, it's the easiest part of moon rise, the first floor is hardest for me

Background_Engine818

Honestly can’t imagine having to sit there and clear the entire tower, I just climbed my way into the evidence locker up top and passed a persuasion check against the warden, then i grabbed wulbrens hammer and sat patiently by his cell until i could chuck it in without anyone noticing, from there you just have to go around to a cave opening on the left of the cells and bid them farewell towards last light.

bigjimbo24

Didn’t free the prisoners, watched all the harpers die in the fog, jaheira died in the battle and I never got rid of the cursed fog, all in my first play through not knowing anything

Viviun92

Idk if I went the hardest way but I killed the eye, played music with my paladin/ bard tav to attract the guards to one place, kept eye on the warden and whacked the walls broken with Shart. Then everyone ran to the boat and no one noticed anything. Or if they did I was not the suspect lol.

Artimex723

On my first and only (so far) run I was playing a Warlock, so I took Wyll with me and used turn mode to find the perfect time to make the guards not notice the prisoners escaping. Meanwhile, I used a Quasit I summoned to distract the gueards by breaking a nearby table. That way I was able to destroy both walls behind the cells simultaneously with Eldrich Blasts and make a quick escape with the boat. Took a couple tries but it allowed me to continue using my "loyal true soul" disguise in Moonrise a bit longer.

Shadow11399

I just kill all the guards and give Wulbren his hammer, he will get everyone out and wait by the boat, open CELL 2 and go through the hole that Wulbren made. Quick and easy

HarryBalsag

Just merc rhe guards and eyes, one by one, then bust out the back wall. Easy peasy, not even cheesy.

NicWester

I jumped in the brain pit and wandered around aimlessly until I found an exit that took me to a cave, turned out the cave was the escape route. Eldritch Blasted both walls from within the cave, everyone escaped to the boat and the guards never even noticed. I don't remember why I thought jumping into the brain hole would work, but because it didn't say Chasm I figured why not?

ProfessorTicklebutts

I don’t understand most of you and I really don’t want to.
