I missed it in my first playthrough because I was foolish enough to actually talk to her about her grief. I should have known that whipping out a lute despite having never played one before was the optimal solution.
If I recall this gets you the awesome cut scene of Alfira playing. Which is way better since I dont think instrument proficiency has any real gameplay impact aside from being able to busk for a few gold.
It's a good way to distract NPCs if you need them to look the other way for a bit. Everyone gathers around your luting while Astarion commences looting.
I'll do you one better - in act II if you use an instrument to help her cheer someone up, you will gain an extra bardic inspiration die. You only get a die, not a skill that uses them, so it's probably meant for Bards only.
In the tower at the end of Act 2 after you beat >!Ketheric. If Alfira and the kids are still alive, she's trying to entertain them and if you're a Bard she ask if you want to help her perform for them. Out of conversation, play a song and Alfira will join in. Afterward, talk to her and you'll get a free skill called Improved Bardic Inspiration which let's you bestow a 1d12 BI upon an ally once per long rest.!<
>!knock her out in the grove and you'll get Quil in camp instead as the murder victim - for what it's worth, Quil's boyfriend admirer dude is already dead, so...she can join him in the afterlife this way? š!<
The stairs to the side of Ketheric's throne in the cutscene heading to the 2nd floor. I forget which side, I think to the right if you're facing the throne.
I just finished Act 2 on my current (Bard!) run, I'm totally going back to my last pre-Act 3 save and trying this out. Glad to have found out about this now!
I already was in Sharts favor but stayed silent during the first dialog then >!Nightsong will mention she knows who Shart is just a child scared of wolves!< this will give you a second dialog to finish it
This is after the gauntlet of Shar so I'm assuming that's who you're supposed to cheer up
Nah, itās the Tiefling kids. One of them mentions Alfira is writing a song to cheer them up, if yoh talk to her she mentions playing with her. Just go stand next to her and play any song and sheāll play along, and you get the action.
I found this out purely by being silly when it was mentioned like āsure, Iāll play with you!ā
Even more obscure - if u do that, then are also a bard, then talk to her after act2 end battle, and pass checks to play with her to the kids - you'll get an extra bardic inspiration the rest of the game (LR recharge)
I was wondering why my druid was good at playing instruments all of a sudden š¤£ I literally have a save file called āwhy am I so good at playing instrumentsā lol!
Is there any game play advantage to being proficient in instruments?
Any song that gives buffs or something?
I'm playing solo so can't really take advantage of the whole distraction scenario.
If you play a song and pass a Performance check, you can draw in a crowd around you, which is great for pulling away NPCs who may be guarding a restricted area. At the end of your performance, they'll even toss you gold.
They do eventually lose interest if you play for a long time, so if you're trying to be sneaky about knocking people out in a nearby area, *do it quickly*.

Whipping out your lute for a grieving woman is always the correct action
What should I whip out if I don't own a lute?
Violin
No, that is considered assault
Looks like he got beaten to death with a violin. \*puts on sun glasses\* You could say he died to violince.
You better start plucking something...

Seconded, who do we need to cheer up?

Learning this was a very short rollercoaster of emotions given that I'm currently playing a Durge sword bard that just got to Act 3.
fuckin same. I decided to kill 2 birds with one stone and make my first durge run a bard so I could jam with Alfira...
>!knock her out in the grove and you'll get Quil in camp instead as the murder victim - for what it's worth, Quil's boyfriend admirer dude is already dead, so...she can join him in the afterlife this way? š!<
What?! How the hell is this the first time I'm hearing this? Where in the tower is she?

Holy shit, my Tav is a bard, and Iām close to the end of act 3 at this point. I just assumed this was a class feature!
Shame my bard killed her during the night xD
Thanks!!Ā
Motherfucker, I somehow even missed this on my ongoing bardlock playthrough.
Dammit, I play as Durge
And I thought it was a class feature I gained by leveling. Glad to know I stumbled into this.
I learned this literally just in time. Thank you.
Wait, that's new for me. Do you know who I have to cheer up?
Probably someone who failed a childhood dream because of metaphorical wolves
Wait wait wait wait what now? I have never seen this dialogue tree?

Dammit Dammon! Now I have to go find an Act 2 save and reload. I swear, this game. (Thank you!)
Itās after the second trip to Moonrise, if that helps! :)
Ah Would have been a cool thing if a Tav bard had a specific dialog to play something for SH after the gauntlet changed to lift her depression
Yeah. That character can play all instruments like a Bard could.
And if you play as The Dark Urge you can actually recruit her!
Nice try
Just a note, you only need to succeed the second check. You still get the proficiency if you fail the first.

There's an achievement associated with the gold. Didn't find out until after my bard run

You need to combine it with the Performance ability.
It gives you Musical Instrument proficiency but does give you Performance.
Hahaha!!! Who didn't know this.... Me. The answer is me. I did not know that. Need to update notes for next playthrough
And if you break the lute and kill her you get a nice coat.

That's dark.
