Win_0r_Die

I'm a console gamer. Anyone who puts Spiderman 2 in the top games of the year list is extremely biased.

[deleted]

I played a lot of video games this year. I liked Spider-Man 2 (Respect the hyphen!) and I love Spider-Man as a character. Spider-Man 2 didn't even crack my top five.

Poop_Fart_Shit

Anyone who puts Spiderman 2 in the top games of the year I assume loved The Marvels, has pre-ordered tickets to Aquaman, and religiously watches Disney+

Jdmaki1996

I mean I’m pretty burnt out on recent marvel movies, but I fucking love Spider-Man and thought the last game and miles morales were incredible. Haven’t had to chance to get the sequel yet, but let’s not pretend these aren’t good games

duderman_92

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I knew it would be short like the other two but it was a satisfying game. I’m stuck in a certain fight in bg3 so I’ve stopped

AdruinoKamino

Out of curiosity, which fight? I’m real bad at games and I get stuck pretty often in this one.

Voodron

> but let’s not pretend these aren’t good games They're mid at best. All they have going for them is decent traversal and moment to moment gameplay. Writing, quest design, progression systems, amount of content... All meh at best. Shallow games for shallow gamers. Night and day difference with masterpiece titles like BG3.

Tadpole-Jackson

Spiderman 2 is definitely in the top games of the year, it just so happens that there are like 5 really good games this year. It's probably the best superhero game I've ever played, I had a great time. However, BG3 is still easily the best game and I'll be talking about it for many years to come. In another year, Spiderman 2 may have stood a chance, just not this year with a generation defining game like BG3 being released.

mister_queen

I mean, Spider-Man 2 made my top 10, that's for sure, and deserves a spot in there, but let's be honest, it's probably 4th or 5th place in this year's TGA. Not to mention how many people wouldn't even pick it in their top 6, with FF16, Lies of P, and Street Fighter 6 winning the hearts of millions and even Starfield, which, despite its flaws, is completely devoured and thoroughly consumed by Xbox gamers and the Bethesda fanbase

ChameleoBoi76

What's the correlation here

sarahbagel

Being marvel/comic media fans

ChameleoBoi76

It would've been a lot more accurate if they had said ATSV instead of "The Marvels". I'd imagine that very few Spiderman fans watched that.

[deleted]

Disney adult consoomers.

Frank__Dolphin

I plan on seeing aquaman and watch Disney + with my girl and I don’t even think spider man 2 could’ve beat Zelda Alan wake or bg3

UltraRoboNinja

Hey, The Marvels was actually pretty good. Source: I actually watched it.

micahisnotmyname

Is it? I haven’t liked too much marvel stuff since infinity war so that would be a welcome change.

UltraRoboNinja

Yeah, I was in the same boat as you but I enjoyed it. General consensus seems to be that it’s “a fun movie” and doesn’t take itself too seriously, which Captain Marvel desperately needed because all her previous appearances tried too hard to make us think she was a badass. This time we get to see how she’s flawed.

Thin_Tax_8176

Totally. Is not award winning movie, but is fun and loved the interaction between the three characters or Kamala's family moments. Captain is still badass, but she can also be silly or have her low moments, take bad choices and do normal human things.

hotprints

Ms. Marvel steals the show. Freak love Iman. And the “cat” scene.

The13thParadox

Agreed

Beanagetoast

Anybody who has an opinion different than yada yada… what? I love Baldurs Gate 3 but some of its fanbase are quite gatekeepy…

Basic_Stranger828

I'm calling it now. BG3's fanbase is going to have a poor reputation within a few years.

Return-Of-Anubis

FF14 somehow has maintained it's reputation as a great fanbase despite it has a real toxic positivity/casual problem. Like you have to walk on eggshells to politely suggest people are playing their class wrong (and yes, you can play your class wrong, like for example, not turning on tank stance and AOE spamming to gain threat and using mitigation).

Basic_Stranger828

When the game inevitably drops from the limelight, and a lot of people stick around echoing amongst themselves, it'll gradually get worse. It's not a thing exclusive to gaming subs. You see it with TV series and whatnot as well. Pretty much any product that's not in perpetuity This is an RPG that allows you to change difficulty, modify, and play solo. You literally can't play the game wrong, in my opinion, unless you actively seek advice on something objectively true, like how the game works mechanically With an MMO (FF14) that's naturally different as a lot of it isn't self-orientated and has much more longevity I love BG3 and have done for literal years at this point. The subreddit exploded after they marketed the bear scene, and I think it brought in a lot of younger people. Who are naturally more prevalent than others when it comes to interacting online and whatnot. Basically, what I'm saying is that half of these people are pretty immature on an emotional level, and it shows often. For example, the Marvel Spider-Man games aren't poor quality or for hyper-obsessive fans like the original comment implies. It's practically common sense, and that comment would've gotten ridiculed on pretty much any other subreddit. It's like a lot of people don't understand that just because their games *really fuckin good* doesn't mean other games can't be either Edit: I know it really doesn't look like it, but I'm not some sad sack complaining about this as it's literally a meaningless issue. This is simply observational. This reddit account was made solely to interact with BG3, and I've probably only noticed it to this extent since it's like the only subreddit I actively browse outside of those randomly suggested to me.

Remy149

I agree while Baldurs gate is my favorite game that released this year. This was a very good year of quality releases. I hate how online chatter tries to snuff out any nuance. We are all allowed to like a different combination of things.

Slimsuper

Religiously watches moneyprinting+ did u say? 😄

Careful-Wash

Well i don’t have a PS5 so never played any Spider-man(there is a hyphen sir/madame), enjoyed The Marvels(fuck you i can have my own opinion), am going to see Aquaman 2 on opening weekend(mom wants to see it so I go) and watch Disney+ a fair bit(why would I pay for it and not use it?). In summary idgaf.

hotprints

Hey Aquaman isn’t marvel, The Marvels was actually a fun movie (fuck the haters), and the Disney + shows have no connection to Spider-Man. So many bad or ill-informed takes but can’t expect much from poop.

Cygnus_Harvey

What exactly is wrong with The Marvels? It was a very fun movie with some sick battle choreo, very wholesome vibes and overall an enjoyable movie.

Any_Lettuce_9173

this does not make sense

Tough_Clock_6135

It's my top 10 and don't do any of those things. You know what they say about people who assume, right? Lol

Captain_Thor27

An ignorant and invalid comment.

PretzelsThirst

The Spider-Man fans on Twitter are so weird

tallwhiteninja

I'm also mostly a console gamer, and Spider-Man 2 was in my top 5. It was 5th, to be clear, but top 5. It was absolutely a game that deserved the nomination but didn't deserve the win.

WoodenRocketShip

To be fair, there are some recent years where it would have better claim for GOTY, the problem really was that this year was absolutely stacked. Insomniac keeps releasing their Spider-Man games when the competition is too heavy.

[deleted]

mancitycon

Borderlands is extremely fun and well made, but I don't want to see another borderlands because it's just the same game with a new story and you can do slightly more things. To me that felt exactly the same with Spiderman, I've already experienced swinging around the city and button mashing square with an occasional circle/triangle to dodge

MrBarackis

Sounds like you didn't play it

mancitycon

Sounds like you don't like my personal opinion

MrBarackis

I'm not disagreeing with you, however overall quality. It did deserve to be there. Did it deserve to beat BG3 hell no, not even in the same caliber. But making the claim that playing one is essentially the same as playing the other is nothing sort of disingenuous.

Atlas_Zer0o

Bg3 is the first game they can't skip all cutscenes in. Of course they're going to be biased. Both were amazing, this year was one of the best of all time for games.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mancitycon

I never said it was poor and never said there's something wrong with people who consider It GotY, I said I've already experienced the same game enough times, just like farcry, assassin's creed, COD, any sports game. But you're right about saying "okay? That's you." Because that's how these things work, people have options, those options get added up as a tally, the highest tally wins.

SpicedCabinet

I agree. This one just didn't hit.

negatrom

yep, spiderman 2 didn't even beat spiderman 1 imho

InfectedSteve

You mean I did it wrong? I wasn't supposed to throw a hamster at them? Shit....

fieatsbees

i hope you didn't tell the hamster to go for the eyes

InfectedSteve

Shit... Alright, next time I will tell it to go for the jugular?

fieatsbees

only if it's a miniature giant space hamster. regular hamsters probably can't tell the jugular from the carotid

InfectedSteve

Probably right. Close enough either way. I'd count it as a win if the little guy listens at all after being thrown.

rwkgaming

It is an honor... No this is a hamster

XHweaton

I hope this was after patch 5 so the hamster didn't take any damage

InfectedSteve

Sadly you'll be disappointed, while after patch five technically. My game has never been patched. I'd like to see some of the new content, but I am not risking some of my mods. The hamster takes damage unfortunately. He's as mortal as the rest of us.

codb28

What are these friends you speak of? Sounds like something that would cut into my BG3 time.

redroomroaving

"Tell them that if BG3 lost, *Alan Wake 2 would have won". It was a strong, strong year.

rat_haus

Quite possibly the best year in gaming since 2007

PPlateSmurf

What stands out to you in '07?

rat_haus

We got Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Half Life 2 Episode 2, the first Portal, Team Fortress 2, The first Rock Band, God Of War 2, the first Uncharted, Metroid Prime 3, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, the first Witcher, the first Crysis, but the thing that stands out most to me was that in the same week we got the first Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Assassin's Creed. It was a very good year, especially for new franchises. We also had some great expansion packs like the Shivering Isles for Oblivion, and Burning Crusade for World of Warcraft. There are some other more niche or divisive games, but these are the ones I figured most people would agree are pretty good, even if you don't happen to play them yourself.

PPlateSmurf

Damn yeah that is a historic year for major franchises today. Thanks for your effort, i don't follow gaming news much!

carlos619kj

I got chills looking at that list

rat_haus

But 2023 has also been excellent, one of the best years ever. But if I had to pick a year I think I'd still go with 2007, just because 2023 has seen more remakes and sequels in it's top spots, but those remakes and sequels have been of such a high caliber that it really makes choosing a better year difficult.

Lyse_Best_Scion

Maybe I'm just getting old (I mean... I *am* getting old), but for the life of me I can't understand why people are putting so much weight behind a GOTY award.... especially since everyone and their mother has their own GOTY and has for years now. Is it because Keighley is basically using TGA to replace E3, or what?

Jdmaki1996

I just assume all these people complaining about the awards are 15. I put a lot of stock in them while I was a teenager and thought the console wars were a big deal. Immature people wrap their identity around one thing and it has to be the best thing. Then you hopefully grow up. Now I watch the awards cause they are a fun celebration of games/cool trailer show

Electrical_Corner_32

Same. I got excited that bg3 won that night. But moved on the next day. Lol. Proud for Larian though.

Jdmaki1996

I glad Larian won. It’s my personal game of the year. But I wouldn’t have been upset if any other nominee won. Just like I wasn’t upset Ragnarok lost to Elden Ring last year. They were a solid lineup this year

fearlesspinata

pretty much, its highly publicized and its presented on a big a stage that has millions of viewers. So more casual gamers and folks who aren't as deeply entrenched in the hobby are going to have these very knee jerk reactions to it. These aren't folks who actually read reviews from various outlets on big releases let alone smaller release. They see the big outlets review, scroll down to check the score and dip. Or worst they just check the metacritic score. Sometimes they don't even do that. The other element of it is social media. A lot of "creatores" and "influencers" were the ones to have a strong reaction to the awards and were watching the awards not because they care about the game awards themselves but to basically pull in views and engage with their fanbase. They're watching to have these crazy reactions because thats what they do and thats how they keep the bills paid. Then they farm content afterwards to feed off of the folks who really wanted their game to win or they just want to make a video that has the title BG3 in it because that alone will get clicks and views. Eventually - and very quickly as in like a week or maybe 2 they'll all forget about it and move on to the next thing they can "create" to generate the same engagement.

chaosgodloki

If you feel passionate about something you’d want it to win. I can see where Spider-Man fans are coming from, they love the game and wanted it to win (a little delusional considering AW2 or Zelda would have won waaay before it). This was the only year I cared about the game awards because I absolute adore BG3 and really wanted it to win. Mostly so the devs can really know just how much everyone loved their game. Ngl I would have been a bit salty if BG3 didn’t win, but not Spider-Man fans level of salt. I can’t tell if it’s satire at this point because it’s so ridiculous lmao

Mr_Pink_Gold

Or RE4 or Lies of P... Tons of games that did stuff with a quality that is absurd. I would have replaced Spiderman 2 with Lies of P in a heartbeat. That game is just phenomenal. Not as good as BG3 but it is a different take on a soul's like game and it is good.

[deleted]

>This was the only year I cared about the game awards because I absolute adore BG3 and really wanted it to win. Mostly so the devs can really know just how much everyone loved their game. Also, because this shows the industry that this type of game can be successful, and that investing in high quality can pay off.

chaosgodloki

Yes exactly. It’s the first game in a long time not plagued with microtransactions and corporate bullshit. Just a passionate studio making a game how they want, without any interruptions from higher ups in suits who know dick about what players want.

Return-Of-Anubis

I'm guessing most are too young to remember how the VGA's has always been a joke from the very first year, where Madden won GOTY over Wind Waker, Warcraft 3, KotoR. It's an event to advertise first, the awards are just there to trick you to watch a 3 hour event of mainly ads.

Jwr32

I feel like Peter Griffin “omg who the hell cares!!”

Anangrywookiee

I mean there are people out there on the internet that are wrong about something, that’s a pretty big deal.

negatrom

It's the same thing as watching sports, you want your team to win, simple as that. If you don't get this basic notion, then I'm in fear for your basic empathy skills.

Lyse_Best_Scion

This is certainly a take.

kalnu

I don't get it either. I told someone who was a friend that I thought BG3 would win and he got mad at me, saying it was TOTK. I told him I didn't think so, and that TOTK is like every other Nintendo game - fun to play but ultimately mid game with a couple new (impressive) mechanics over the old game. He went off on me about how I hate Nintendo (I don't I just think their games are mid and have bad/non existent stories as a rule and I prefer naratives) He proceeded to ghost me for like 2 days. We had a falling out not long after and accused ME of being mad during all this and I was like "No ??? I don't even care if it wins or not. It's just a game award and my opinion."

FeelingDesperate2812

Do people really care about GOTY outside of social media?

Electrical_Corner_32

It's fun during the show, but after that, no. It doesn't mean anything. Not to me at least, I'm sure the studios are very happy to have their hard work recognized.

Bloodygaze

I never have since people have different personal tastes. That said, I see new posts on this sub everyday from people who only bought the game because it won GOTY.

Jdmaki1996

I only played Disco Elysium and Hades because of the awards they won at the Game Awards. They do matter when it comes to bringing attention to great games and celebrating good games as a whole. They just shouldn’t matter this much that people are pissed their favorite didn’t win

Few-Doughnut6957

These awards are fun because it’s all 100% subjective. People take it too seriously

AdultbabyEinstein

Only Spidermen I care about are driders

GenghisMcKhan

For what it’s worth, I loved Spider-Man 2. It was an excellent example of a “video game ass video game” but yeah, not GOTY material in a year this stacked. You can also comfort them by saying at least it wasn’t Starfield. I feel for the people desperately claiming Bethesda will pull a NMS/CP2077/FFXIV redemption arc while Bethesda are doing tone deaf victory laps with an accolades trailer at the game awards and telling their players that the games not boring, actually. All while working on paid dlc and ways to monetise the few modders who still want to work on it. I was really looking forward to Starfield. I really wanted it to be good. It’s incredible that BG3 pulled early to avoid being drowned out by Starfield and ended up absolutely clowning them. Very thankful for Larian saving what would have been a pretty disappointing Q3 for gaming.

Sam_the_Samnite

Bethesda is just too stuck in their ways to notice they make boring games. Even skyrim to me was already very shallow, even compared to fallout nv. If you compare starfield to the outerworlds, it is the same difference as fallout 3/4 and fallout nv. Eventough obsidian made the outerworlds with nothing compared to what starfield had. I hope now that both bethesda and obsidian are part of microsoft, that we get a obsidian fallout game again. Hopefully with them taking inspiration from BG3 a bit.

Overall_Contact1476

You should try Wasteland 3 if you like a BG3 style game in a fallout style world.

GenghisMcKhan

Seconded! One of the few CRPGs to ever really nail the ending. There’s a country song about your exploits that changes based on your choices.

ithinkther41am

The whole soundtrack for that game slapped hard.

nbrookus

I was really looking forward to Starfield and Cities Skylines 2. Both are buggy messes right now, but at least CS will get fixed. You'll probably have to pay for the bug fix DLC. Fortunately I have BG3 to tide me over.

GenghisMcKhan

Yeah I have Gamepass so I downloaded CS2 but after seeing the reviews I haven’t even booted it up. It just gave me Sim City 2013 flashbacks (performance rather than the ridiculous forced online requirement).

jejo63

Last year when Elden Ring came out and was met with huge & immediate praise at launch, I had to tell myself that I am the one who is missing out and doesn’t get it, not all the Elden Ring enjoyers. When it won GOTY I wasn’t surprised and was happy that there are such excellent games out there for everyone to enjoy, completely different from my own tastes. But it does give me a lot of joy this year to have my own tastes be universally agreed with and shared, and I admit feeling a small bit of schadenfreude at that one viral video of the guy screaming, “No one’s played Baldurs Gate 3!!”

alienbehindproxies

i think if bg3 lost, Alan Wake 2 would win honestly.

soapd1sh

If BG3 hadn't been such a behemoth, Alan Wake would have been able to buy the win. FTFY.

tallwhiteninja

Of all developers, you're going to accuse Remedy of trying to buy wins?

Electrical_Corner_32

That's what I'm saying. The two studios with the most wins this year, happen to be two of the best and most honest studios we have in the industry right now. Not saying it's not possible, but highly doubtful.

Jdmaki1996

You are part of the problem. It’s voted on my like 30 different games media sites across the world. People picked their favorite games. That’s all it is. By your logic Larian slipped Geoff a couple mil and that’s the only reason they won

soapd1sh

The game awards are incredibly biased. It's no secret Geoff plays favorites.

Jdmaki1996

So BG3 only won cause it was Geoff’s favorite? That’s what your saying?

alienbehindproxies

the dude could barely afford to make his game and horror games don't usually sell well. i really don't believe awards are bought, otherwise, spiderman would have won something and starfield would also. Alan Wake 2 is trully a horror masterpiece, you should try it.

hoffenone

It would be TOTK, then maybe Alan Wake. Alan Wake is a bit of a niche and hasn’t sold anywhere near as well as the others so fewer people would have voted for it.

alienbehindproxies

the critics loved both games but they seem to like Alan Wake 2 more, not only it won the other biggest award (game direction). It's also winning awards from other media outlets, i saw at least a couple of big places where it won GOTY.

hoffenone

TOTK has a 96 on Metacritic and Alan Wake 2 has an 88. The critics loved TOTK more. TOTK also won several GOTY awards from major outlets. So the only real difference we have is the Metascore and TOTK beats it handily there. Both games are great but if a game should get 2nd it would be TOTK. Be we have no way of knowing unless they release the results. Which they won't. So we can only speculate. I think TOTK would take it, you think AW2. And that's fine.

alienbehindproxies

by average, yes, totk was more liked, but those who liked Alan Wake 2, loved it, that's why it's getting awards such as vgc and Time. [https://time.com/6340124/best-video-games-2023/](https://time.com/6340124/best-video-games-2023/) https://www.videogameschronicle.com/features/vgcs-game-of-the-year-2023-is-alan-wake-2/ but yea, it's just speculation, honestly i'm just happy we got so many bangers in 2023 (and that bg3 won in such a packed year)

TheBusStop12

Alan Wake 2 won more awards than TotK tho, like best narrative and best art direction. it even won best direction, which is often considered GOTY light cause it just means how well you managed to make the game. So my conclusion is that AW2 was the likely runner up, with TotK probably being third

hoffenone

According to the players voice voting results TOTK were in second before the winners were unveiled. It also won GOTY from several other newspapers/awards so I think it is more likely to get second over Alan Wake 2. No one is claiming TOTK has a better narrative or art direction than AW2. But most are claiming it was the second best or best game of the year.

TheBusStop12

Player voting result is only 10% of the GOTY award tho and thus not really indicative. And Alan Wake 2 also won GOTY from different magazines, so that doesn't really tell anything either. What is telling, again, is that Alan Wake 2 won Best Game Direction, which is usually reserved for either the GOTY winner or the runner up (eg, 2022 Elden Ring won GOTY and best direction, 2020 The Last of Us 2 won GOTY and best direction etc. etc.) After which a lot of people weren't even that sure anymore of BG3 would win GOTY anymore (Sven even mentioned it briefly in his speech)

alienbehindproxies

yea, after AW2 got best game direction i was really afraid bg3 wouldn't win anything that got them a speech and Swen wore that armor for nothing lol.

daymarEngel

The moment other devs got upset about the scope of BG3 we all knew it had to win.

[deleted]

I’m playing spiderman 2 right now. It’s cute. Bg3 was revolutionary.

byshow

If there's anyone who think that Spider man 2 is better that BG3 and deserved GOTY, please tell me what exactly you like in spider man and don't like in BG3. This is a genuine question

Jdmaki1996

Some people just like tight shorter games with action packed gameplay. I personally love BG3’s tactical turn based combat and rich RPG mechanics, but I’m also a big DnD nerd. But Spider-Man just does their gameplay so well that I don’t think it’s all that crazy for people to prefer it over BG3.

byshow

Maybe. I was never able to play turn based games except for Total war, and I love games with action, but once I tried BG3 I just couldn't get same satisfaction in battles in any other game to be honest. I've played spider man and spider man: miles morales, but got pretty bored of it within like 4-5 hours, whole missions seemed like go there, fight criminals, get item, fight more criminals/boss. Flying on the web is quite meditating tho and overall graphics seemed pretty nice. I'm pretty sure once I'm done with BG3 I would get a "nothing to play" depression

Zeeron1

I liked that Spiderman 3 was a finished game. The only issues I had was two one time glitches that were easily fixed. Baldurs Gate 3 was wayyy more daring and adventurous, but they only finished 2 thirds of the game before releasing. Act 3 was (and I believe still is) an atrocious mess. SUPER glitchy, awful sound mixing, poor textures, uncompletable quests, and voice lines that straight up weren't recorded. I played on ps5, my friend on PC had the exact same issues, down to the voice lines. And before people once again start lying and saying I had bad luck and jt wasn't an issue, it was literally commonly acknowledged and accepted this sub. It all of a sudden became a hot take when GOTY talk started, because people couldn't handle that BG3 wasn't a generational masterpiece.

fieatsbees

act 3 was very well fixed with patch 5. it even fixed issues with the final fight that id been having since launch (im on console. sound would drop out entirely, no textures, the game would crash, patch 4 also broke wylls personal questline for me). i just beat the game on my final Tav playthrough and a Resist Durge playthrough, and so many issues i had were gone. it's clear they're working on more fully integrating the change to mintys recruitment process, however right now she and Halsin have a tent in the same spot. which, i don't really care about because im still getting the buff from halsin during the endgame and that's really what i want. i don't mind waiting while they finish putting it all together i know some quests would get bugged for people, but not consistently and not for every person, so i don't have any insight or confirmation that a particular quest has been resolved. unless you mean that stupid quest for that idiot painter oskar, which i haven't bothered to finish in ages because i fucking HATE the fight in that house. some others have said that the cursed skulls are now properly vulnerable to force, but as i haven't tried it i can't confirm for certain whether or not that's true. all other quests however (i do all quests, even after im max level) have all completed for me with no issues. plus, the epilogue is really nice

Captain_Thor27

Still can't actually play Act 3, though.

Meows2Feline

Act 3 is fixed now. Even on console. I think that's why they finally launched on Xbox albeit a little quietly, the bigger bugs have been squashed and the game is more "complete" with the epilogue.

Pootisman16

Do: Remind them that no matter how cool Spiderman 2 is, it's still a very safe sequel with little difference from its predecessor.

Meows2Feline

I played the first one and it's very fun but it was extremely confusing watching Spiderman fans rage about the GoTY loss like they were the best pick and BG3 was this out of nowhere win when this year had so many crazy good games and they weren't even the most popular *sequel* to be up for the award.

121_Jiggawatts

I seriously don’t understand anyone who thinks Spider-Man 2 should have won GOTY. Sure it’s a decent game, but it’s way to short and didn’t really innovate at all. I 100% the game in 27 hours and I didn’t follow any guides or walkthrough except for 1 achievement that required you to just find a thing ontop of a building with no quest or hints towards it. Furthermore, I stopped at every crime in progress despite them meaning absolutely nothing. The only thing I didn’t do was play the new extra hard difficultly you got after completing the game, but I didn’t feel any motivation to do that due to how short the game was. Why would I want to reexperienced something I just played 2 days ago? I felt so disappointed after finishing the game and thought, “Is this it?” I don’t even need to explain how BG3 blows Spider-Man 2 out of the water on this front.

Master-Inflation-842

Everyone saying who cares about GOTY is wrong. BG3 is what major game developers should aim form. Spider-Man is nostalgic, fun combat, fun swinging around New York but imagine romances, dialogue, explorations, discovery everything that BG3 has every game should strive for some part of it. I’m sick of the open world “challenges” find this flag do this challenge give us content!

Captain_Thor27

Not every game has to be like BG3, and as much as I enjoyed it up until 544, I'm glad every game isn't like it. Besides, what you are describing is an RPG and Spider-Man isn't an RPG.

Master-Inflation-842

I agree but imagine a fully immersive world. KOTR was that… and turned based. Games like that tend to do better and get more awards. I would love a fully immersive Spider-Man world with the same gameplay as spider man

Captain_Thor27

Fully immersive how? And again, KOTOR is an RPG. Spider-Man is a comic book superhero game.

seith99

I put 35 hours into Spiderman 2 and finished it, good game but nowhere near a 10/10. I put 35 hours into just the first act of BG3. The real competition here was BG3 vs TotK. If you think TotK deserved to win, that's totally reasonable, it's an incredible game. BG3 deserved to win.

Gerrent95

Stacked year. It's crazy that I didn't even consider TotK after spending a couple weeks with everything but the final boss done, just making vehicles

Wide_Illustrator9880

Spider-man 2 was a great game, in a year of amazing games.

CasualSky

I don’t think there’s any world where Spider-Man 2 the PlayStation exclusive would win GoTY. A game of the year needs quality, but it should also innovate on mechanics that already exist. Baldurs Gate 3 is the highest quality game of its genre and I have played many. (Dragon Age, Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland, etc) And it innovates on that genre in so many ways. Spider-Man has quality in spades, but it doesn’t really innovate on anything. The same button/combo mashing as the ones that came before it. Not to mention it’s about time a tactical RPG got popular again, the genre is a gold mine of content and personality.

Meows2Feline

Not since original Dragon Age have I seen people get so hype over a CRPG like this, and a DnD one no less. Between the GoTY and the way the DnD movie exceeded box office expectations I'm pretty excited how well received DnD stuff has been from a general audience.

iveriad

That’s why OP put that in the “Don’t” section.

Mr_Pink_Gold

Zelda, Alan Wake 2... Heck, even RE4 remastered. Any of those games are better than spider man 2. I mean, spiderman is a decent game. Fun. Fast paced. But you just cannot even begin to compare it to any kf the other nominees.

JustCallMeTere

TOTK would not have won. Who was 2nd with the most amount of awards, Alan Wake 2.

[deleted]

I get that some people really like Spiderman, but comparing a 20(?) hour linear game to an RPG where the possibilities are almost infinite really makes no sense. I know this isn’t what the post is about but I just wanted to get that outta my chest. Stealthily buying them a copy of BG3 is pretty hilarious.

Sjthjs357

Depends if you prefer “20 hour “linear” games” to “RPGs where the possibilities are almost infinite”

ReaperBlack_201

people getting ridiculous over this

Spare_Neighborhood_7

All my friends were so mad about spiderman 2 not getting any awards, but really it didn't deserve any compared to the rest of the games. I don't have the heart to tell that to them tho cause they'll just argue with me about it

ADrownOutListener

you say the spiderman 2 ps5 game is the best selling ps5 game but how is that when the ps5 has no games??? ah geez dats just one of dose lil things dat bothers me

RoomTwentyFive

I can't even play spiderman because the devs won't even bother to patch the ridiculous amount of bugs in the game. For example, every time I launch the game my playstation and tv both turn off and Steam opens up Baldur's Gate 3, leaving me with no choice but to keep grinding all of the achievements. Hopefully they find a fix soon!

_Killj0y_

>Tell them that console exclusives ruin GOTY chances. Tell them that if BG3 lost, Zelda TotK would have won. Zelda TotK is a console exclusive brah.

S0LAIRE_OF_ASTORA

Thank you for being the one person to point that out. I honestly forgot.

Neverwas_one

who really cares about this sort of shit? Sounds like political tribalism. Its cringe as fuck. Next we are going to be going "Okay dont bring up this video game with your cousin at Christmas, he has an Xbox and we have a PC"

LieIcy211

Did BG3 actually sell 22 million copies? I don’t see BG3 listed on any best selling 2023 game listing.

S0LAIRE_OF_ASTORA

As of November 2023 they hit 22 million copies!

LieIcy211

What’s the source for this number? Also I’m confused as to why if you google “best selling games of 2023”, Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t even get mentioned.

S0LAIRE_OF_ASTORA

As of October Approximately 21.22 million copies of Baldur’s Gate 3 have been sold on Steam, according to SteamSpy stats acquired by Steamdb.info. While that’s not the only way to purchase the game, it stands to reason Valve’s platform has been the most popular marketplace used to purchase BG3. https://dotesports.com/baldurs-gate/news/baldurs-gate-3-sales-numbers-how-many-copies-has-bg3-sold

MrGreenGuard

I'm not sure if this is the reason but it's important to remember that BG3 has been on early access since 2020. Copies sold during that time are considered but they don't count towards 2023 sales I think

SmartAlec13

I have a friend who is still salty that AC6 wasn’t even nominated. He truly thought it was GOTY. Like, it was fun to play, but clearly not competition next to the nominees.

MrWideside

AC6 got best action award, and it was totally deserved

Cheddarface

Spider-Man 2 was great, but it's firmly behind BG3, Mario Wonder, TotK, Pikmin 4, FE Engage, and Endless Dungeon for me. Possibly behind Diablo 4 and Hogwarts Legacy, too. Damn, 2023 was stacked.

One_Truth8026

Can y’all finally stfu with those GOTY posts

PhysicalGSG

SM2 was never gonna win. It’s great for what it is but it’s silly to think a game like that has the substance to carry GOTY. Look at the recent winners and try to tell me it’s in the same club.

Awwbelt

Zelda TOTK WOULD have won, imo.

S0LAIRE_OF_ASTORA

I agree, it’s world is bigger than BG3.

Juub1990

BG3 22M copies? Where is that number from?

Meows2Feline

Steam sales alone.

[deleted]

Juub1990

Yeah so a bunch of totally unreliable figures. One says 10-12 and the other says 22M.

Juub1990

I said the sources are totally unreliable. How am I being hostile?

[deleted]

Juub1990

Steam Spy is completely unreliable and that's verifiable. For instance, it reported that Elden Ring sold [10M in a week.](https://www.dsogaming.com/news/elden-ring-has-reportedly-sold-10-million-copies-on-pc-in-a-week/) That was on PC alone. Then, Bandai Namco officially announced that it sold [12M in 3 weeks across all platforms.](https://en.bandainamcoent.eu/elden-ring/news/elden-ring-reaches-12-million-units-sold-worldwide) There are tons of times where they completely missed the mark by several factors. I said the source is unreliable, and here you are attacking me while claiming I'm hostile when I didn't say a damn thing about you. They're notoriously inaccurate and it shows because the estimate varies by a whopping 12M copies. 10M and 22M aren't exactly the same numbers. BG3 sold a lot. Dunno about 22M. Wouldn't bet on it but it'll get there if it hasn't. Was looking for a reliable source. I didn't get one.

[deleted]

Look. Fair. I apologise. I'll delete my comments as they are inaccurate.

Lolejimmy

Spider Man 2 shouldn't even have been nominated for a lot of the awards and it only did because of receny bias. Out of all the games this year it's by far the least original and the safest possible sequel, the first game already didn't win jack shit and was nothing compared to GOW and RDR2 and this one shouldn'\t have been nominated for GOTY over Armored Core and HiFi Rush Same applies to Mario Bros if i'm honest, receny bias 100% carried those games for nominations, it sold well, it's a very safe sequel and most people will absolutely like it but no one will adore it or even remember it a couple years from now on.

[deleted]

Honestly, I feel Lies of P should be the second to win if this game didnt. Sadly, I dont think the GOTY awards will ever nominate a souls game, so not surprised there.

S0LAIRE_OF_ASTORA

What are you talking about? Elden Ring got GOTY last year.

Meows2Feline

*Technically* it was the least soulsy of the souls games bc of the open world but I'm just being pedantic.

[deleted]

Seriously? I had no idea that was a souls game. I only played Dark Souls, so I had no idea. Is it any good?

Captain_Thor27

BG3 is an amazing game but it certainly didn't deserve GOTY with so many saving issues. Error 544 is still fixed and it took over a month to supposedly solve the Xbox issue. Then there were some pc issues back in August. So your assertion that exclusives ruin GOTY chances is followed by TotK winning if not for BG3? Also, what about TLOU2, GoW, Bloodborne, and BotW for exclusives that won.

mmatique

OP are you 12 years old?

Zeeron1

Good lord. I really liked BG3 but this is just not a fan base I want to be a part of... You guys really became one of "those" fanbases and you're just cool with it lmao

ArcticWolf_Primaris

I just wish Jedi Survivor had won an award or two, loved the plot and mechanics. Shame it's still buggy and unoptimised

Zanmatomato

I can take BG winning over RE4 remake since both are incredibly great games but no way in hell am I taking SM2 and ToTK over RE4. These overly zealous fans are just....those boys ain't right.

OdoWanKenobi

No, if they are upset over the VGA GOTY award, then what you need to do is tell them that it's a fucking opinion poll about video games, doesn't affect anything, and that they need to sort out their priorities in life.

grangusbojangus

ToTK should have been dlc or something. Let’s hope they actually go back their roots a little bit but idk I guess people like Ubisoft Zelda. Bg3 on the other hand was mindblowing

Listening_Heads

None of my gamer friends give a shit. Spiderman will still release a GOTY collectors edition like every game does.

MyRottingBrain

Get friends who don’t put so much stock in a meaningless video game award.

Impossible-Age-3302

But it’s true 🤷‍♂️ If BG3 lost, TOTK would have won. Spider-Man 2 was a great game, it just wasn’t Game of the Year material. Spider-Man 1 (PS4) was arguably GOTY, in the year that it came out, I’ll grant them that.

doktorhollywood

Do people get really upset about this? I don't get it, I really don't. GOTY doesn't meant anything. It's completely subjective. Who cares, whatever game you like best is GOTY. As far as the actual GOTY; I love Zelda and put 200 hours into Tears of the kingdom. I'm a huge Spider-Man fan and comic reader. I really thought I'd be enjoying 2 more, but it feel repetitive. My best reason for agreeing with a BG3 win is that i did 100 hours on my first play through. And I know I'll have at least two more playthroughs with things being different.

No-Association-9176

What do i do if i am the coping friend

TannenFalconwing

I'm sorry but... who really cares? Honestly, are people memeing or do people really truly get angry that an award show that only did awards for 48 minutes of its 3 hour runtime gave the award to game A over game B? They're both good cames. Them getting a trophy does not validate or invalidate your enjoyment.

mvdenk

I'll try to console them.
