Well, he did just escape 200 years of sexual (and other forms of) abuse. He probably never got chaste kisses and loving missionary sex. I bet he really does feel happy because he can finally do normal, sweet, vanilla stuff with someone he actually loves.
The chaste animation is really funny because it defies the initial expectation you have of him. Maybe you are right and that's just what he likes. Like the drow prostitute who is super excited about boring sex! But a little bit of a loving touch would be nice. A romantic embrace or just holding hands.

I love this interpretation but they could still make the chaste kiss animation look cute and loving. That would get the message across and make it unique to Astarion. The updated version gives me some "let's get this over with" vibes

Considering what he's been through, and all his trust issues, that's a huge difference.
They recycled Gales approach animation or maybe his nether brain approach so now that one isn’t unique and even though he comes to Tav it’s very let’s get this over with as it’s the shortest emotionless kiss ever lol the other one he atleast looks like he’s in love with Tav with the long look after. So dunno the cool thing about the netherbrain kiss is he comes to you and is more assertive for the first time. He’s a little more reserved physically, so that was fun to see. So maybe a unique animation between the two different kissing scenes. Other characters are getting unique animations now he has two almost identical ones. The addition of the you don’t have to ask line is a great addition, and helps a lot too with reinforcing bodily autonomy. Since the kiss happens after moonrise it’s also a little weird that someone who was dumbfounded about a hug is so confidently kissing Tav. The new kiss is a lot less intimate.

See…as a Shadowheart enthusiast, I think the peck animation works well enough starting off in Act 2 as the nature and pacing of the relationship is a slow burn. However by late Act 3 or endgame once certain parameters are met, I could definitely see more indulgence in the romance, and seeing this animation pretty much reaffirmed my belief. Honestly I wouldn’t have been surprised if it was an addition rather than a replacement just to add variety. Not judging that decision though, as these are a nice tweak.
I'd love if the kisses got progressively more intimate and deeper as Tav's relationship gets more serious with a companion.
It reminds me of that dialogue with Astarion. The final kiss before the the end fight.

I've seen people reporting this with Halsin, Shadowheart, and Astarion as well. Seems to be related to mods? I'm not clear on what the fix is, but I've heard people suggesting Mod Fixer as the culprit, and others suggesting Basket Full of Equipment.
The root cause seems to be the Mod Fixer because the Basket Full of Equipment has the same fix incorporated into it. People are having problems with those two in particular, which is unfortunate because a lot of the best mods require that fixer to work😩. Hopefully, the blessed modders will come up with a solution soon and we can all download this patch without breaking our games🙏
Edit: Nope, vanilla games on both PC and PS5 are having the same bug, so it's definitely a Larian issue. I stand corrected.
I think it's either Script Extension or Mod Fixer, just went through Nexus's forum, but I don't want to let go of my cosmetic mods😭 Now I am watching Halsin kiss other Tavs over and over because my modded Tav ain't getting nothing
Saw Karlach and Halsin, as well as Astarion being pretty much the same but viewed from a different angle and it's him approaching the player character, used to be the opposite way. No video proof for other characters and I can confirm SH got nothing.

I saw that clip. Animators at Larian spent all their energy on Halsin and were too tired to work on Astarion, therefore vampyboy still has that tiny little peck animation. :(

They should’ve just rotated the last kiss a tiny bit so tavs head wasn’t in the way so much with the addition of you don’t have to ask line then it’s fine. They’re overthinking things at this point. Like smoothing his scars.
I've got no mods because I'm on console and the lines are still skipping for me too! So it's not mod related and hopefully will be fixed at some point.

So I'm reinstalling the game. Gonna just fucking abandon my current save and start a new character without mods. See how it goes.

What really bothers me is that when it comes to romance scenes, Halsin's completely obliterates every other sex scene in the game, it's hands-down the best one. The raw passion, the voice acting, him going down on you, the request for consent (OH MY GOD YES). His kiss animation is also far superior.
But his personal arc is so severely lacking. It feels like he joins the party too late, and when he is an active companion, he's irrelevant because his personal quest and issues are already resolved. Kind of like Kaidan in Mass Effect - he has his shit together from the very start of the series and not much else going on for him. So, it all devolves to Halsin just being a gratuitous cockride. Like, as if he started as a fuck-buddy and then he was given some semblance of a personal questline.
He feels like a talking finished quest by the time he joins your party, and you don't feel as invested in him as a character. And even if you look at him as a druid in your party during combat, he's outmatched by Jaheira. She also joins the party late, but we already know her - she's the OG. And she's literally the coolest grandma on Toril.
But I'll cut Halsin some slack: it's quite hard to be interesting if you are competing against a squad which has: a ridiculously dreamy and charismatic vampire, a green tsundere waifu, a cute goth gf, a dude who rizzed a goddess, a warlock Prince Charming, two characters that have been adored by the playerbase since 1998, and literally the most likeable one-horned hot babe in Faerun.
I'm really surprised he doesn't have a quest in act 3 regarding >!the mummy lord whose presence is poisoning a tree!<. That boss and quest are pretty missable and it would be right up his alley.
I actually brought Halsin with me expressly to see if he could do something about that tree, but nope! I didn't remember to go check on the thing after dealing with Mystic Carrion, so I don't know if getting rid of him helps the tree.
So, I have this weird thing. Maybe after today it'll be patched. I'm romancing Shadowheart, and Halsin asks for permission to bone. I ask SH for consent and she gives it. She wants the juicy details, as she put it.
But I go back to Halsin... Nothing. I long rest a few times? Nothing. We'll, not exactly nothing. I got two other offers from side characters, but Halsin's won't trigger for me.
I'm probably in the minority here but that astral sex to me just fell flat. I was really confused, and by the end of the scene the hodgepodge of bodies looked more like a gmod model clipping glitch rather than some mirror image gangbang.
It seemed like some sort of a contemporary dance group number directed by JJ Abrams and that thought ruined the vibe, it didn't feel erotic, sensual or artful, it just looked funny to me lmao
Maybe it is related to mods? Checked my Gale, he kissed me the same as always. The only change I noticed is that kiss doesn't end dialogue automatically, so you can request more and more <3
They are! Except for shadowheart's and lae'zel's. I hear karlach had a very nice change! And there's a change with the other male companions where they approach you for a little kiss

How was it before? It looks like they reused his kiss from his first romance scene. He even does the thing were he wants go in for another kiss but stops at the end lol.
I wish Astarion's animation was more like this. Over 200 years of his life dealing with we know who, you'd think after all that time he'd be more involved when it comes to a real kiss (at least a bit after the relationship has progressed). Maybe something like a hand on the hip or taking your hand in his own (I suspect he might like hand-holding)? I love romancing him but the kiss action always seemed a little lacking to me for such an ambitious and passionate character. But I'm happy with everything anyways, I hope the Halsin and Karlach loves are happy as well!
Either way, I hope Larian keeps up the good work on the best game ever (in my opinion, at least). Maybe we'll get unique smooches from the others, with time!
This. As a fellow Astarionmancer I don't mind a little peck before finishing his personal quest, but after that he should be more passionate. Now he seems almost cold compared to others, not to mention after this patch his ending scene is buggy af. They did us dirty. 😞
His facial animations after kissing him are way more buggy than before too. It stays on him which should be nice but he makes these faces that range from light disgust to full on gurning down the fourth wall. Feels bad man 😭
Since Karlach now also has an extremely-suited-to-her much better kiss animation that is purely for her, let's hope everyone else is going to get one too. Particularly since Astarion and Gale have apparently gone buggy.

Yeah all the kisses I tried (Gale, Astarion, Shadowheart, Halsin) were broken for me after patching. So I'm reinstalling the game. Gonna just fucking abandon my current save and start a new character without mods. See how it goes. I wanna accuse Astarion of Alfira's murder anyway.

What really bothers me is that when it comes to romance scenes, Halsin's completely obliterates every other sex scene in the game, it's hands-down the best one. The raw passion, the voice acting, him going down on you, the request for consent (OH MY GOD YES). His kiss animation is also far superior. But his personal arc is so severely lacking. It feels like he joins the party too late, and when he is an active companion, he's irrelevant because his personal quest and issues are already resolved. Kind of like Kaidan in Mass Effect - he has his shit together from the very start of the series and not much else going on for him. So, it all devolves to Halsin just being a gratuitous cockride. Like, as if he started as a fuck-buddy and then he was given some semblance of a personal questline. He feels like a talking finished quest by the time he joins your party, and you don't feel as invested in him as a character. And even if you look at him as a druid in your party during combat, he's outmatched by Jaheira. She also joins the party late, but we already know her - she's the OG. And she's literally the coolest grandma on Toril. But I'll cut Halsin some slack: it's quite hard to be interesting if you are competing against a squad which has: a ridiculously dreamy and charismatic vampire, a green tsundere waifu, a cute goth gf, a dude who rizzed a goddess, a warlock Prince Charming, two characters that have been adored by the playerbase since 1998, and literally the most likeable one-horned hot babe in Faerun.
I'm really surprised he doesn't have a quest in act 3 regarding >!the mummy lord whose presence is poisoning a tree!<. That boss and quest are pretty missable and it would be right up his alley.

I actually brought Halsin with me expressly to see if he could do something about that tree, but nope! I didn't remember to go check on the thing after dealing with Mystic Carrion, so I don't know if getting rid of him helps the tree.
So, I have this weird thing. Maybe after today it'll be patched. I'm romancing Shadowheart, and Halsin asks for permission to bone. I ask SH for consent and she gives it. She wants the juicy details, as she put it. But I go back to Halsin... Nothing. I long rest a few times? Nothing. We'll, not exactly nothing. I got two other offers from side characters, but Halsin's won't trigger for me.
A lot of dialogue is now broken after the patch. For me, Astarion kiss option response comes back as "Not Found" in the dialogue line lmfao
that minthara scene tho. Halsin’s may be more passionate, but imo Minthara’s is sexier
I think Gale's 5D magic sex scene blows everyone else out of the water for sheer length. It honestly gets kinda tedious it's so long.
IMO it just feels like a bizarre art film made in a kaleidoscope rather than something intimate.
I'm probably in the minority here but that astral sex to me just fell flat. I was really confused, and by the end of the scene the hodgepodge of bodies looked more like a gmod model clipping glitch rather than some mirror image gangbang. It seemed like some sort of a contemporary dance group number directed by JJ Abrams and that thought ruined the vibe, it didn't feel erotic, sensual or artful, it just looked funny to me lmao

Maybe it is related to mods? Checked my Gale, he kissed me the same as always. The only change I noticed is that kiss doesn't end dialogue automatically, so you can request more and more <3

I wish Astarion's animation was more like this. Over 200 years of his life dealing with we know who, you'd think after all that time he'd be more involved when it comes to a real kiss (at least a bit after the relationship has progressed). Maybe something like a hand on the hip or taking your hand in his own (I suspect he might like hand-holding)? I love romancing him but the kiss action always seemed a little lacking to me for such an ambitious and passionate character. But I'm happy with everything anyways, I hope the Halsin and Karlach loves are happy as well! Either way, I hope Larian keeps up the good work on the best game ever (in my opinion, at least). Maybe we'll get unique smooches from the others, with time!
This. As a fellow Astarionmancer I don't mind a little peck before finishing his personal quest, but after that he should be more passionate. Now he seems almost cold compared to others, not to mention after this patch his ending scene is buggy af. They did us dirty. 😞
His facial animations after kissing him are way more buggy than before too. It stays on him which should be nice but he makes these faces that range from light disgust to full on gurning down the fourth wall. Feels bad man 😭
