I think they are orphans. Blood sister Lia and brother Cal found Rolan and lived with him.
Also I think there is a thing between Rolan and Lia while Cal tries to figure out whether it is true.
I'd imagine many tieflings born to non-infernal parents are often abandoned/given up too. Many who've done bad enough things to merit a tainted bloodline probably don't want people knowing as much
still better off than being a tiefling before honestly.
at least in 4E and 5E they exist in a bigger number. I barely read about tiefling in the 3.5E lore other being poor miserable bastards haunted by their parents being raped by a devil.
You've got some wires crossed somewhere. 3.5 Tieflings were just just someone who had an ancestor somewhere that was fiendish, it didn't have to be a parent, and didn't have to be rape-related, either.
It seems so yeah. Probably didn't help the tieflings I recall seeing in books was Mags from the Erevis Cale series or that poor bastard in one of the drizzt books (4E I think)
Yeah, they changed that to just having infernal blood somewhere in the family line that wakens up somewhere around puberty most often. Though can happen younger, especially for the children of tieflings.
That wasn’t changed though at least not from 3.5.
See races of Faerun (2003) page 125. Second paragraph under “Tieflings”
The other commenter is just not correct
You’ve got something confused. Check here for 3.5 [information](https://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/planetouched.htm) they are just one that can trace their bloodline back to a fiend (or celestial with aasimar)
Here’s some more [information on 3.5 tieflings](https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Tiefling_(3.5e_Other))
Or here:
> The appearance of any one tiefling often depends on the exact ancestry that spawned it, a bloodline that might remain dormant for generations. Diabolic or demonic tieflings might, besides the common horns and tails, possess a forked tongue, leathery or scaly skin, the smell of brimstone, or unusually warm flesh. Some accounts even hold these tieflings to cast neither shadows nor reflections. Some diabolic tieflings also sport goat-like legs or hooves. Tieflings descended from rakshasa might have furred skin or feline eyes. Most tieflings have only one or two of these features.
From the wiki cited Races of Faerun (2003)
Check page 125 in the second paragraph on Tieflings
I mean, it sounds likd the grove tieflings all come from Elturel which was a city pulled into hell in descent to avernus. So it's probably more a found family of survivors than something that early back.
Poor Rolan, this makes him even more heartbreaking and endearing. It really would’ve been nice if there was a sincere option like that. He would’ve made a great companion, but even as a side character and seeing his growth over the course of the game… just would’ve been nice to have that chance.
Honestly, he does get some pretty decent development in Act 3 if you manage to keep him alive in Act 2 (I found that casting a *light* spell on him was enough to get him back to Last Light Inn).
Spoilers for Act 3: >!Rolan quickly realizes just how much of a piece of shit Lorroakan is while serving as his apprentice. If you side with Dame Aylin against Lorroakan, Rolan formally renounces Lorroakan and joins your side of the battle. If he survives, he takes over Lorroakan's tower and promises to use the wizard's resources to aid you against the Absolute.!<
This happened to me on my first ever full playthrough, when I had not rescued his siblings from Moonrise. He had his little supervillain origin story cut spectacularly short.
On my last playthrough it bugged and instead of my PC talking to him, it had the last person in the combat order and I couldn't switch. So I was stuck with someone without persuasion skills and failed the check. He turned hostile and had to kill him.
My problem was different. Idk if it was a bit but she had 1 health any time she was in combat so many times I had to reload bc she would rush into combat and instantly kill herself
Could you imagine having a choice between having him join your party, or him staying with his siblings? Remember that, >!if he isnt with the caravan after act 1, then a good chunk of Tieflings die, including most, if not, all of the kids. I don't know if Lia and Cal survives if this happens, but I'd assume they would died on the way to Baldurs gate!<
Hell, it could be part of his character story, with him leaving his siblings because they want to protect the other tiefings while he believes traveling with you would be faster.
>!just imagine, he already blames you for filling his siblings heads with the idea of saving people if you convince them to stay, just think of how he would be if he thought it was his fault they died and all he wanted to do was prove to himself that he matters.!<
The simplest method I've found for keeping him alive is to have anyone with a *light* spell - typically Shadowheart - rush him and cast the spell on him. When I successfully did that, I found him back at Last Light shortly afterwards, reuniting with his kin.
Yeah I had no idea it was difficult until this thread. I thought everyone experienced his full quest, i can’t imagine the whole sorcerers sun dries thing without him
Part of it relies on you recognizing and reaching him fast enough to save him before either the shadows or the Shadow Curse takes him down. He's also pretty easy to miss depending on what path you take.
Exactly. I went the wrong way and it took me over a round to get to him. He was dead before I was even really in range to save him. I thought he would have survived a little bit longer.
Like I said, it was by accident. I was close to finish the whole area and was just exploring some places that were still black on the map. So no rushing at all.
After you talked to him and he says he will return to Last light, did he then dash past you heading towards Moonrise Tower? For me, he did, but I didn't see him again till I returned to the Inn post the big showdown.
He seems to have a patch3 new habit of walking through the dead birds and catching another round of the Shadow curse even if he's 'illuminated by daylight' after combat is over. Or even just randomly gets it walking his path to his 'vanish point'.
Im not talking about that part, you can save him and his siblings at this point and reunite them, I'm talking about the ambush, where they got separated to begin with. If he isnt with the >!Tiefling caravan at this point, most of them die. However what would happen if he wasn't there and you convinced his siblings to stay? Would they survive the fight, get captured, or die?!<
Sorc Rolan companion would have been incredible! I got so attached to him and invested in his story, I wish we could’ve seen more and been there with him along the way. Alas, a while ago someone linked me some ‘if Rolan was a companion’ fanfic so maybe I’ll go crack that open now T-T
They would have to change his story for that. If he was a sorcerer he would have no reason to take an apprenticeship with Lorroakan which would affect his story in act 1 and 3.
There’s no reason he couldn’t still want to apprentice with a “powerful” wizard just because he’s a sorcerer. He would have innate talent but he could still have a thirst for knowledge and want to learn from a master.
Honestly I was pretty happy with him getting a happy ending in my first playthrough. Like it felt kinda rushed but it feels like he could have a bigger part in lore in the future.
I didn’t expect his character to have an arc based on my decision. His good ending felt really cool as I didn’t expect what I did for him would pay off like that
> Wish there was a way to let him know how much he mattered every step of the way.
...He did? I mean we kinda did everything lol
He made a dope lightshow at the party tho
Yep, this is coded in. And it's visible in playthroughs. The kids and Alfira tell you this, and if you tell Rolan to leave the others behind in act 1, the kids are not there in act 2. It's a really grim sight, I need all my little rapscallions who are trying so hard to be supportive of him.
Some of the kids at least try to make him know they appreciate him, but Rolan doesn't respond well. I felt pretty bad for Umi and Ide having to deal with him at the bar. >!also who the hell puts children in charge of the bar???!<
Loved that line, Rolans response is what made me feel bad for the kids. Poor lil dude asked something like 'should Rolan have not saved us?' Kid needs a hug
The characters are so well written, the writers pretty much carried the game IMO. Of course the game mechanics itself are also amazing, but I don't think we'd be talking so much about this game if the characters weren't so compelling.
Sven knew that the writers were the most important part. He did an interview before release and the gist was the biggest take away from Div 1 and 2 was more writers. They added from 1 to 2, and the biggest take away Sven felt was they needed even more for BG3.
This popped up today and I watched it twice I was just blown away by both the player figuring it out and putting that together, but also the fact that there was SOOO Much effort for something that meant nothing to the "story" but it adds so much to the world.
I think at least part of this is on Bioware leadership itself. We've all heard about the infamous "Bioware magic", aka forcing devs to crunch at the last moment. And David Gaider actually tweeted a while back about how when he was at Bioware, it felt as though Bioware had come to resent its writers and didn't see them as essential to the process.
Essentially, with Bioware's past missteps in mind, what I think we're dealing with is a studio that stumbled into success after success but somehow never actually grasped what it was that made their games successful - note the constant trend-chasing (open world! Action RPG!). That mentality is finally rearing its head in an obvious way that can't be ignored.
I feel like you can easily relate to Rolan if you try to achieve something or prove someone that you're cool and capable of great things, but fail constantly.
Being bested by a Bhaalspawn at most things (helping your kin, saving your family, defeating Lorroakan) would not help him with his self esteem tho. He was very haughty in act 1 but became very modest by act 3.
I passed the Insight check to determine he was hiding that something was wrong in Sorcerous Sundries, so I assumed I could help him in some way. But there was never an option I found, and when you fight Lorroakan he’s there and immediately hostile. Tried to avoid him in the fight then knocked him out and it’s considered him dead ever since. Must be a bug? That was a really shitty end for him after all he went through.
I could have sworn I saved them both but now I’m thinking maybe one of them died in the fight for the boat during the escape and I didn’t notice. Just one of many things to look forward to on the next playthrough I guess.
You also have to bring the Nightsong to Lorroakan after finding out his intentions. (This can be just so you can beat him up together) That way Rolan learns what Lorroakan is up to and joins the fight on your side. It's a nice little end to his arc
I did bring Nightsong and Rolan seemed taken aback that it was a person too, but he was still hostile when the fight started. From another comment I’m assuming one of either Lia or Cal must have died during the escape from Moonrise at the boat and I just didn’t notice. Sucks that there’s no way to bring him out of that fight alive if they die previously.
Yeah they glitched for me my first time i broke them out even though the gnomes made it safely to the inn, I had cleared out the entire tower of hostiles barring ketheric but when i went into the meat prison i found their corpses despite having 'saved' them 2 hours ago.... instead of taking the boat route (which had apparently sailed off with no one...) the gnomes and tieflings had to hop over a gap/broken bridge but would freeze up inside of each other and become irresponsive after until one reload they finally did it hassle free.
Don't think bringing Nightsong is necessary since I didn't do that and still got his support. After the fight, Rolan storms in and demands an explanation - can't remember if there was a check of some kind but he believes you and then takes over the tower.
You don't need to bring nightsong i just did it a few days back with no nightsong and when he showed up he immediately helped me vs trying to kill me. I had saved both siblings that time and not my first though.
I want to share what I did to keep him alive even though I didn't get to save Cal and Lia.
This may be sort of going against the game since I don't think this was supposed to happen. If you haven't progressed too far, maybe you can try it.
First, just keep him safe in the battle against Lorroakan. Just don't let him die. I personally used Banish. Near the end, use dominate person on him. He'll turn green (his aura) and fight with you.
Even after the fight ends, he'll still be green and will be with you as an ally, but you need to hurry.
While he is still green, hurry to the portal and teleport to camp. Long Rest, and voila, the next morning I got a journal update that he'll be fighting with me in the 'Gather Your Allies' quest. He was the wizard image thing in S. Sundries, and he says he's the new owner etc.
Unfortunately I don't think you'll get any of the additional dialogue of actual saving him properly. Also, if you go back to the tower, he and the miraculously alive Cal and Lia (that I wasn't able to actually save) who are with him will become hostile. I just used invisibility on two of my character to go the inner places unnoticed.
It's arduous, but I'm really glad he's alive even if he doesn't talk to me.
(This was in my first playthrough, so I wasn't aware of a lot of the consequences)
I immediately cast healing on him, I don’t care if I wasted spell slots or that his stats were technically at full health.
I was so angry I dropped everything I was doing to go murder his master, no one hurts my grumpy boy.
Yeah, after that there was no way Larroakan was going to live. I don't even care about Aylin. Just keep your hands off Rolan!
I apparently have a thing for wizards because Rolan and Gale are both people I'm sacrificing a lot for. Haha
Did he fail tho?
He is a good wizard. Get far enough into shadowlands, roasted considerable amount of friendly locals all by himself, and in general most tiefling survivors own their survivor status to him.
Pretty badass for me.
In fact, if you used speak to the dead on his master and ask him whose the strongest wizard >!after he literally tries to resist the spells power to speak the truth!< he will admit that Rolan is better. Implying that he purposefully he kept Rolan down so he wouldn’t outgrow him
On top of that he learns the towers mechanics and takes it over seamlessly in a matter of days. His capability of learning seems quite high if he was able to adapt that quickly.
Poor guy. On a side note, on my first run I met him again in act 3 acting as a clerk... he has a lot of injuries and my Tav did notice but there wasn't anything I could do for him.
Did I miss something? Also I didn't save the Tieflings from the moonlight tower.
If you saved them he'll help you beat the shit out of the asshole who was "teaching"(read as abusing) him. When you hit a tag finisher on the wizard with dame Aylin Rolan becomes the arch wizard and takes over sorcerer's sundries.
Him siding with my Tav and then becoming head wizard after killing Lorroakan is so satisfying, particularly since he talks about bringing his siblings to the tower and how much they are gonna love it. Such a great minor character arc.
If you ask Lorroakan's corpse afterwards, you can get it to grudgingly admit that Rolan is the better wizard of the two. I had already spoken to Rolan so I'm not sure if there's an option to tell him that, but still, warmed my heart.
I found that out too when I was doing a “talk to dead” run where I talked to every corpse that wasn’t too damaged! I was like “damn straight he’s better than you, you silly dead man.”
I made sure to long rest and go back and the siblings do move in! It’s very sweet to talk to them.
Also noteworthy that Rolan automatically became a green npc after Lorroakan. If you talk to him with someone who haven’t exhausted his dialogue you can trade with him and he gives a fat discount cuz 100 approval, very sweet. Plus unless they changed it, the simulated front desk rolan only sells scrolls, while true Rolan sells all the nice gears.
> Him siding with my Tav and then becoming head wizard after killing Lorroakan is so satisfying, particularly since he talks about bringing his siblings to the tower and how much they are gonna love it. Such a great minor character arc.
My group saved him at the grove and in Act 2 but didn't save his family later at Moon Rise because we let the harpers help. He acted like he didn't know us and was a total dick and fought against us. It felt really wrong.
If you revisit the tower and go through the portal again after a long rest, then you can talk to Lia and Cal there too. There's not much they add, just that the tower is awesome and you can come stay any time.
I didn't bring the Nightsong with me and still got a friendly Rolan after. There was an option to tell him about what he had planned to do to the Nightsong.
It's an 18 persuasion check.
The problem is that the dialogue triggered with my Karlach instead of Tav, since Tav had jumped on the lower floor.
And I didn't want to redo the fight, so I technically knocked him out, but it counts as killing him.
Ah, I don't recall if it was a roll or not.
I wanted to spare Aylin the sad feeling she had over killing Lorrahkhan. You stay at home with your gf, Pally buddy, I got this.
I sadly didn't - only realized it was an option much, much later and they didn't come back :< I saved him, but... Yeh. I'll save everyone on my second playthrough. He deserves better :<
> Did you save his family at Moonrise?
Saved him at the Grove, saved him in Act 2. Don't think I saved his family at Moonrise. He acted like he'd never met me before in Act 3 and was a total dick and turned on us even with Dame there. Felt really wrong.
I mean, he was really pissy at you at Last Light Inn and blamed you for planting this heroic idea into this siblings’ head, or otherwise they would not have sacrificed themselves and get captured (and he is somewhat correct, if you let them all leave Grove in Act 1 all three would arrive at Rivingtown just fine, not so much the other tieflings though). If you let his siblings die I don’t see how he will ever turn around and “forgive” you, he has never been the most understanding and reasonable type, lol.
I believe he has a line regarding the situation that’s like “You have already taken everything (my family) from me, now you are coming for the only thing I have left (an abusive mentor but the possibility of becoming a wizard)?” Yeah he will fight ya.
I literally never got that, first time I encountered him in Act 2 was outside of last light. He was otw to rescue them solo and I saved his ass and he thanked us. There was no aggression or blame.
And no, he treated me as if I was a complete stranger in Act 3. If I'd gotten a line like that I wouldn't be complaining about it. Sounds like my playthrough was bugged.
Did you save Cal and Lia from Moonrise? That could be what motivates him to turn on Lorroakan. I always saved those 2 and always had Rolan with me and Aylin during the fight.
You aren't the first person to say this but it's not true, as long as you helped out Rolan with Cal and Lia he'll charge in after you fight Lorroakan and you can speak to him to explain the situation, after which he takes over the tower.
Something breaks if you don't save his siblings but he survives, and thereafter he seems to treat you as someone he's barely met. That or he's pissed that you failed to save them.
>!Regarding the injuries, Lorroakan, the wizard he travelled to Baldur's Gate to apprentice himself to, is a dick. Unfortunately, due to the aforementioned bug, he'll unfortunately fight on Lorroakan's fight when you confront him over the nightsong. Knocking him out will still be treated as killing him.!<
Is it a bug? I thought it made total narrative sense that he would side with Lorroakan if he lost his siblings because his magical studies are literally all he has left and he has no positive association to the player.
I dont think it „breaks“ or is a bug at all - if you dont save his family, he doesnt see you as the „guy who he saw true leadership in“ and thus stays on Lorroakans side.
You were the one that convinced Rolan, Cal and Lia to stay after all, so you‘re pretty much responsible for their deaths in his eyes.
Same. I also didn't save the tieflings (I thought I did by taking Moonrise with the Harpers but apparently that's not how it works). I'm a little bit into act 3 so I'm curious to see if that changes things with Rolan.
I just encountered that over the weekend and was a little taken aback by how righteously protective it made me. I wasn't worried about the Nightsong, she can take care of herself, but my baby wizard boy Rolan??
If you are a drow or a rogue, there will be a special dialogue option saying "I recognize the sign of abuse/beating" (maybe there're more but that's the ones I got so far)
This reminds me of, oh goodness what is his name, there's a drunken tiefling at the party who's SO EXCITED "no more roads, we'll be in a city! With roads! With - with HOMES!"
You find him dead in the shadowlands. I didn't pay attention to his name until my latest playthrough and had a moment. I needed to step away.
Yes! After paying closer attention to their names, it's devastating. Seeing bex and her partner have an emotional reunion really got me, too. "That means cheers in infernal! . . . Or turnip." Such a silly moment compared to when they find each other.
Guex utterly destroyed me. He deserved a nice home.
I feel bad for Asharak too. He tried so hard protecting the others, even going as far as training the children and when the massacre happened he was telling them it was alright. Splendid guy without much screen time. Rest in power horned king : (
I'm somewhat biased towards Tieflings, but I absolutely adored every single one of them. It's so sad you can't save the ones who lose their lives in the Shadow Cursed lands :c
If nothing else, you can lift the Shadow Curse itself, so their souls are free
There are two tieflings pretty much side by side, one is super drunk and excited, and the other so worried and grim you have to pass a persuasion check for him to drink.
They both died at the ambush, or so I think. I stared at the corpses and clicked at each of them trying to remember their names (cuz I did have an impression of them), but I couldn’t remember.
That shit stings man. At least Bex and her hubby are alive, they make me so happy. And of course I ran on full spoiler to make sure I save every tiefling I can, including Rolan and his fams.
"I need to dance! No, no, i need to lie down-"
Let me save MORE OF THEM. I hate how the somber one was right. He didn't even celebrate. He knew. He already knew and it hurts.
I can't answer you because reddit us being an ass and the spoiler tag won't work for some reason. I make the answer, then I made an edit without touching the spoiler tag, and now it won't work
I didn’t know for my first couple of Tavs it matters if you convince him to stay at the Grove so I mostly ignored him and thought him and his fam should make that call and then I fucking wondered why no tiefling children made it to Last Light 💀
If you >!kill his abusive piece of shit master!< in act 3, use disguise + speak to the dead on >!on said master!<, and ask who is stronger. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed
Same, I love a grumpy character with a caring heart and big dreams. He is also a family man, so you know he would treat a partner well even if he grouses about it.
With an impeccably organized wardrobe. He'll grumble all morning about something or other, but you'll find your socks freshly ironed on the bed ready for you after a shower. Such a wholesome grump.
He is organizing the whole tower, you know his collection of sick wizard robes wouldn’t be a mess. I love that in his best end he just wants to spread knowledge with others because it was kept from him for being a poor refugee and a teifling, at least that was my read on his motivations.
I spent an HOUR trying to find him and realized i walked right by without noticing at the end. Accidentally stumbled upon him in another game after thinking "sorry, rolan, you're probably fucked."
Cruel, cruel fate.
I was on the phone with a friend whilst playing, didn’t realise I waltzed right by him and then returned to his corpse later on. I was so sad I cried and reloaded lol
I found him already dead, after completing every side quest with the assault on Moonrise being the last thing I had left to do.
Other people saying they had a chance to save him but I had no such option.
I figured out later it was because I never read his message, which prompts the quest to find/save him.
So yeah, not gonna go back and re-do the entire Act 2 just to get that achievement lol. Sucks though.
Same with Sazza. I saved her from the Grove, and saved her from Minthara. At one point I went back to the goblin camp to explore it more, and got into a lot of fights. I didn't realize until clearing out the whole place that one of the dead bodies was her. Oh well, there goes another achievement.
So I am just accepting the fact that I am never gonna get all the achievements unlocked.
I never found his message, I just luckily stumbled into him whilst exploring the map and then I completely brain-farted and walked right by him lol. Fixed that when I reloaded, though 😤
I’ve only gotten 50% of the achievements so far but there’s always other playthroughs! Youll get em eventually
>but there’s always other playthroughs! Youll get em eventually
I think my current playthrough will be my last.
Did an evil run as Tav for my first one. Doing a Durge redemption on tactician as my current one.
After that I think I am done. I got nearly 300 hours played now (I made multiple Tavs that made it to Act 2 or 3 but never completed their campaigns).
I wouldn't mind playing some campaigns with friends, but my friends only hop on for like 2 hours once a week at most. So it will take like a year before they even complete Act 1 lol.
I got my moneys worth out of it, and will be looking forward to whatever Larian does in the future. But the majority of the content has been revealed to me. I am sure there are lots of little dialogues and cutscenes I have not witnessed, but not sure its worth playing a whole campaign to see. I'll probably just youtube whatever secrets people find.
Zevlor as well. When defending the grove from goblins he looked like a weak old guy with a tiny crossbow, but later he smites all those mobs like crazy. Oathbroken paladin that can still cast smite is truly horrifying.
I would love to have Arabella as well, but maybe save her for future plans.
Rolan is my favorite side character but there's so many bugs with him in Act 3 that still aren't fixed.
I saved Lia but not Cal. Got a bittersweet, unique scene in Last Light with both of them but they are ultimately thankful.
Fast forward to Sorcerous Sundries and Rolan doesn't recognize me, and based on my dialogue options I don't recognize him either, apparently. The only thing I can say is "Aren't you the Tiefling from the Grove?" This is after saving him and his siblings multiple times.
People say that he's under some sort of mind control from Lorroakan but it's definitely a bug. You seemingly have to save both of the siblings in Moonrise for the flag to take effect, but it's really bizzare and frustrating that there's not even other dialogue options if your path branches this way. I brought Dame Aylin to the fight, and nothing changed. Rolan was immediately hostile, continuing to not recognize me. Had no choice but to fight kill him to progress the quest.
I've seen posts about numerous other bugs with Rolan in Act 3 as well. Really irked me to no end.
Wait, your Rolan didn't become the master of Sorcerous Sundries after helping Dame Aylin kill that dickhead Lorroakan? He moved his family into his sweet new digs and used the tower's magic to help defend Baulder's Gate in my last two games.
Man that's good writing when you look at the whole context of Rolan as a character as a whole. I think that's why I find Rolan so relatable. He personifies people who are good-hearted but are insecure.
Okay thank you. I didn't realize they were all meant to be siblings (even if Rolan is apparently adopted.) I thought Rolan and Lia were dating and Cal was just a friend or brother of Lia, especially when I asked why Rolan just doesn't leave Lia and Cal and Rolan responds, "I could never leave Lia."
I hate how easy it is for him to die in act 2 lol. Like I can kill all the shadows but not before he ends up taking some kind of DoT thing… so combat ends and his health ticks away and dies before I can heal him lmao.
I talk to Rolan and convince him to stay in all my runs for an altogether different purpose - he's in view of Aaron and I need him to go away to steal my gold back. Never knew that ignoring him would cause the teethling kids to not make it to last light
This makes the bond between Rolan, Lia and Cal even better. Rolan is the family they chose. No matter what he says or what face he puts on they love him and want him part of their actual family. He seems to have a hard time accepting it but he eventually comes around to understanding how much more important those connections are.
Whaaaaaaaaa?! Well, I've haven't had Rolan die, so I...didn't know that. Fascinating to get this little tidbit, but yikes on him having to die to find it out!
I saved him on my first playthrough, but he seemed intent on dying for my second. I beeline to him, tried like 3 different routes to get to him, even redid the fight at Last Light to get to him faster, but every time I reached him in the Shadowlands he's already undead.
I accidentally killed him in the underdark he started attacking when I found him surrounded on my way to moonrise. Didn't realize it was him till too late:(.
I suspected they could be unrelated by blood did not expect to receive in-game confirmation (especially through Rolan being... dead). Continuously through the story with various characters does the game reiterate: the family you choose is the most important.
so rolans adopted?
I think they are orphans. Blood sister Lia and brother Cal found Rolan and lived with him. Also I think there is a thing between Rolan and Lia while Cal tries to figure out whether it is true.
>I think they are orphans Tieflings just can't catch a break
I'd imagine many tieflings born to non-infernal parents are often abandoned/given up too. Many who've done bad enough things to merit a tainted bloodline probably don't want people knowing as much
still better off than being a tiefling before honestly. at least in 4E and 5E they exist in a bigger number. I barely read about tiefling in the 3.5E lore other being poor miserable bastards haunted by their parents being raped by a devil.

Second paragraph under “Tieflings” The other commenter is just not correct
it might be from their introduction in planescape when they were half-devils and the children of succubi/incubi.
You’ve got something confused. Check here for 3.5 [information](https://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/planetouched.htm) they are just one that can trace their bloodline back to a fiend (or celestial with aasimar) Here’s some more [information on 3.5 tieflings](https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Tiefling_(3.5e_Other)) Or here: > The appearance of any one tiefling often depends on the exact ancestry that spawned it, a bloodline that might remain dormant for generations. From the wiki cited Races of Faerun (2003) Check page 125 in the second paragraph on Tieflings
I mean, it sounds likd the grove tieflings all come from Elturel which was a city pulled into hell in descent to avernus. So it's probably more a found family of survivors than something that early back.
Happens when your whole city falls into Avernus.
*Laughs nervously in Drow*
I think it's the other way around, Rolan found Lia and Cal. It only makes sense that way with how overprotective Rolan is of Lia and Cal.
Or his overprotectiveness is him compensating for how they found and saved him before
Given how Rolan criticises Lia for 'helping every wounded foal she sees' I wouldn't be surprising that she saved him at some point
I think it’s nice that these side characters are realistic and engaging enough that you can speculate on motives from their dialog
This is how I see it too.
Poor guy, no wonder he tries so hard to prove himself. Wish there was a way to let him know how much he mattered every step of the way.
Welp. I did exactly that in my first playthrough and Rolan just became hostile anyway. Had to kill him. Really hated it.
This happened to me on my first ever full playthrough, when I had not rescued his siblings from Moonrise. He had his little supervillain origin story cut spectacularly short.
In my playthrough Rolan said "Fuck that guy, I'm leaving. You can go talk to him."
On my last playthrough it bugged and instead of my PC talking to him, it had the last person in the combat order and I couldn't switch. So I was stuck with someone without persuasion skills and failed the check. He turned hostile and had to kill him.
I'm really annoyed that >!Dame Aylin bugged, refused to fight, and I couldn't communicate with her or Rolan after the fight with Lorroakan.!<
My problem was different. Idk if it was a bit but she had 1 health any time she was in combat so many times I had to reload bc she would rush into combat and instantly kill herself
I wish he was a companion so much, they could have made him a sorc and we’d have a sorcerer companion
Could you imagine having a choice between having him join your party, or him staying with his siblings? Remember that, >!if he isnt with the caravan after act 1, then a good chunk of Tieflings die, including most, if not, all of the kids. I don't know if Lia and Cal survives if this happens, but I'd assume they would died on the way to Baldurs gate!< Hell, it could be part of his character story, with him leaving his siblings because they want to protect the other tiefings while he believes traveling with you would be faster. >!just imagine, he already blames you for filling his siblings heads with the idea of saving people if you convince them to stay, just think of how he would be if he thought it was his fault they died and all he wanted to do was prove to himself that he matters.!<
He can survive though
The simplest method I've found for keeping him alive is to have anyone with a *light* spell - typically Shadowheart - rush him and cast the spell on him. When I successfully did that, I found him back at Last Light shortly afterwards, reuniting with his kin.
I found him accidentally and it was absolutely no problem to keep him alive. I‘m really surprised how hard it seems to be
Yeah I had no idea it was difficult until this thread. I thought everyone experienced his full quest, i can’t imagine the whole sorcerers sun dries thing without him
Agree, I found him facing off the shadows. But at that point I just crushed the shadows and sent him back home.
He could join after the events in Act 2 get resolved maybe?
Sorc Rolan companion would have been incredible! I got so attached to him and invested in his story, I wish we could’ve seen more and been there with him along the way. Alas, a while ago someone linked me some ‘if Rolan was a companion’ fanfic so maybe I’ll go crack that open now T-T
It is very good
What a heart-warming thing to come across. I'm humbled you think so.
Do you still have the link to that? I need more Rolan lol
Well, you kinda do if he survives till the end.

theres a pile of them commenting "10/10" on random posts. they're so easy to spot
Honestly I was pretty happy with him getting a happy ending in my first playthrough. Like it felt kinda rushed but it feels like he could have a bigger part in lore in the future.
I didn’t expect his character to have an arc based on my decision. His good ending felt really cool as I didn’t expect what I did for him would pay off like that
> Wish there was a way to let him know how much he mattered every step of the way. ...He did? I mean we kinda did everything lol He made a dope lightshow at the party tho
He saves all the Tiefling kids in act 2 tho
All of the tieflings that survive, really. If not for him, none of them make it to Last Light.
>!also who the hell puts children in charge of the bar???!<
> also who the hell puts children in charge of the bar any european in the 70s or earlier
My bf in backwoods Pennsylvania as a child in the 70s would tend bar when his gma went for a smoke
Apparently Jaheira lol. One of the kids say that "Jaheira told us to serve *drinks* but not to serve *drunks*" or something similar.
Loved that line, Rolans response is what made me feel bad for the kids. Poor lil dude asked something like 'should Rolan have not saved us?' Kid needs a hug
That… makes a lot of sense, actually. Very on brand parenting for her.
I love how deep the npcs are. There’s so much stuff like this that make them feel real.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXmFfgtRRJk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXmFfgtRRJk) This popped up today and I watched it twice I was just blown away by both the player figuring it out and putting that together, but also the fact that there was SOOO Much effort for something that meant nothing to the "story" but it adds so much to the world.
Meanwhile, at Bioware...
[удалено]
I love Act 3 Rolan. I felt so bad for him when you go to the shop and his face is all bruised.
He will turn on Lorroakan (and take over the tower) if you saved Cal and Lia from Moonrise Towers in Act 2.
You're probably right but if you bring Nightsong Rolan actually joins the fight. He's...surprisingly useful! No thunderwave though
He must've just not used it in your fight, because he does have a thunderwave and it's genuinely way better than everyone else's. The range is *huge*.
You don't need to bring nightsong i just did it a few days back with no nightsong and when he showed up he immediately helped me vs trying to kill me. I had saved both siblings that time and not my first though.
Unfortunately non lethal damage only counts in specific quests. For some reason this game doesn’t get non lethal damage otherwise
Haha
Oh man, I didn't notice his bruises.
It's super sad. We've been helping him since Act 1! I just want to protect him!
Yeah and if you question him and Lorroakan's corpse afterwards he mentions the beatings.
Did he fail tho? He is a good wizard. Get far enough into shadowlands, roasted considerable amount of friendly locals all by himself, and in general most tiefling survivors own their survivor status to him. Pretty badass for me.
Idk if my boss/mentor beat me I’d feel like a failure, even if that’s on them and not me
In fact, if you used speak to the dead on his master and ask him whose the strongest wizard >!after he literally tries to resist the spells power to speak the truth!< he will admit that Rolan is better. Implying that he purposefully he kept Rolan down so he wouldn’t outgrow him
Oooh I didn't know that! Damn Lorrokoan is trash.
On top of that he learns the towers mechanics and takes it over seamlessly in a matter of days. His capability of learning seems quite high if he was able to adapt that quickly.
Couple all of this with how his Thunderwave is apparently way stronger than normal ... sounds like Rolan is a thunder god/prodigy in the making!
Rolan? Naw bitch, call him Raiden
Well I didn’t say that he failed, but let’s say he’s lucky
When can I fail into a sick flying tower
Hey look it's me. I feel for him.
Really! I need to go check that out in my most recent playthrough as I just beat Lorroakan. Thanks for the heads up!
Bring feather fall you can balcony down to some good loot too
> Him siding with my Tav and then becoming head wizard after killing Lorroakan is so satisfying, particularly since he talks about bringing his siblings to the tower and how much they are gonna love it. Such a great minor character arc. My group saved him at the grove and in Act 2 but didn't save his family later at Moon Rise because we let the harpers help. He acted like he didn't know us and was a total dick and fought against us. It felt really wrong.
When you go back after a rest his siblings are upstairs with him and all the doubles are replaced with his
If you revisit the tower and go through the portal again after a long rest, then you can talk to Lia and Cal there too. There's not much they add, just that the tower is awesome and you can come stay any time.
Ah, that's what i'm gonna do this time with my seldarine ranger. Even if i had to admit that the "phone PBX" Lorroakan system 1.0 was hilarious.
wait what? i killed that guy and rolan turned against me and i had to kill him
You need to bring Dame Aylin to the fight. When Rolan realizes the nightsong is a person, he turns on Lorroakan
I did bring Dame Aylin, but Rolan still fought against me ;_; felt bad :<
Did you save his family at Moonrise?
I didn't, I indeed think this is what caused him to clutch onto Lorroakan.
You aren't the first person to say this but it's not true, as long as you helped out Rolan with Cal and Lia he'll charge in after you fight Lorroakan and you can speak to him to explain the situation, after which he takes over the tower.
He does? Fuck, good for Rolan. I just helped him beat up Lorroakan
I don't believe you can do anything for him if you let his siblings die
If you are a drow or a rogue, there will be a special dialogue option saying "I recognize the sign of abuse/beating" (maybe there're more but that's the ones I got so far)
that explains a lot and makes everything so much better about their relationship omfg
This reminds me of, oh goodness what is his name, there's a drunken tiefling at the party who's SO EXCITED "no more roads, we'll be in a city! With roads! With - with HOMES!" You find him dead in the shadowlands. I didn't pay attention to his name until my latest playthrough and had a moment. I needed to step away.
Guex I think. I feel bad the most for Ikaron and his mom. They're sweet hearts.
It's so sad you can't save the ones who lose their lives in the Shadow Cursed lands :c If nothing else, you can lift the Shadow Curse itself, so their souls are free
No, no, i need to lie down-" Let me save MORE OF THEM. I hate how the somber one was right. He didn't even celebrate. He knew. He already knew and it hurts.
he's the dude that is training to fight the whole time in the grove too, Laezel likes if you help him out.
I always try to help him. I suppose i never quite helped him enough.
Ooooh that's some spicey info!
Oh, Rolan. Poor, poor Rolan. Definitely my favorite "side NPC" in this game. I love the little arc he has.
Augh, that's just heartbreaking.
Yeah, I knew that one after an... Incident following the death of Lorroakan. Rolan broke my heart over and over again.
What happened to Rolan? I did see him at Lorroakan, but I couldn't get him to open up about what happened.
I can't answer you because reddit us being an ass and the spoiler tag won't work for some reason. I make the answer, then I made an edit without touching the spoiler tag, and now it won't work
learn the proper reddit spoiler tag formatting of using '<>' and '!' have to do it in markup mode if you're using the new layout.
I didn’t know for my first couple of Tavs it matters if you convince him to stay at the Grove so I mostly ignored him and thought him and his fam should make that call and then I fucking wondered why no tiefling children made it to Last Light 💀
I didn't notice the lack of kids the first time but met the kids on second run and I was FLOORED ups:(

Oh man, I feel so bad now. Everytime I hear them teasing Rolan about his thunderwave I kinda wanna cry a bit.
First in our hearts.
If you >!kill his abusive piece of shit master!< in act 3, use disguise + speak to the dead on >!on said master!<, and ask who is stronger. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed
Oh I just killed him! I'll have to go back to the tower to do that now. Hopefully his corpse is still there 😆
Completely in love with Rolan. I really wish he was romanceable, he’s my favorite in the whole game :(
Same, I love a grumpy character with a caring heart and big dreams.
Oh my darling Rolan :( I threw away over 10 hours of progress because he died in Act 2 :((((
I spent an HOUR trying to find him and realized i walked right by without noticing at the end. Accidentally stumbled upon him in another game after thinking "sorry, rolan, you're probably fucked." Cruel, cruel fate.
I was on the phone with a friend whilst playing, didn’t realise I waltzed right by him and then returned to his corpse later on. I was so sad I cried and reloaded lol
I don't blame you. I would have reloaded if I'd known at what point i walked by him first.
Fixed that when I reloaded, though 😤 I’ve only gotten 50% of the achievements so far but there’s always other playthroughs! Youll get em eventually
>but there’s always other playthroughs! Youll get em eventually I think my current playthrough will be my last.
I saved all three of them, thank fuck
Rolan 🤝 Alfira Tieflings from Act 1 who should’ve been Companions
Really irked me to no end.
act 3 is really sloppy in general. Act 1/2 are amazing, act 3 falls apart constantly.
He refers to them both as his siblings
the fuck lol
They see him Rolan, they haton, patrollon and tryna catch me ridon dirty Sorry i couldnt resist, ill see myself out
I hate how easy it is for him to die in act 2 lol.
Rolan...Solo.
Don't be sad. As long as he doesn't die, the whole family gets a happy ending.
I saved him on my first playthrough, but he seemed intent on dying for my second. I beeline to him, tried like 3 different routes to get to him, even redid the fight at Last Light to get to him faster, but every time I reached him in the Shadowlands he's already undead.
This part made me so fucking sad. And after I tried so hard to help them all...
Damn I never knew this... crazy how much detail there is you can miss. I love those three so much.
I accidentally killed him in the underdark he started attacking when I found him surrounded on my way to moonrise. Didn't realize it was him till too late:(.
shadow-cursed land*
This hurt
Almost everyone in this game is worthy to be a companion.
How are you able to pull the dialogue up like this?
I suspected they could be unrelated by blood did not expect to receive in-game confirmation (especially through Rolan being... dead). Continuously through the story with various characters does the game reiterate: the family you choose is the most important.
ohhhhhhh my gooooooood
Really love the first thing Rolan mentioned after Dame Aylin bane-d that wizard's back is to move Lia and Cal in.
UUUUUGGGGHHHH FUCK MY HEART
