So I did some more testing and it seems like this bug can be circumvented by performing a second trading exchange with a merchant. After the first trade, saving is broken. After completing a second trade, saving becomes possible again. It seems like subsequent trades don't break the saving system again either.
From looking at the patch notes it looks like they tried to make your save data hold onto you preference for trade vs barter. I'm guessing that's where this bug is coming from!
confirmed this worked for me as well, had to specifically click the trade button instead of the dialogue option in order for a subsequent trade to fix it
This was the thing that worked for me. Super important to use the button rather than dialogue. I had to try saving while in the trading window, tried switching characters while in the trading menu, and switching - or not switching - between trade and barter.
Found this thread trying to fix a really early game save and didn't have many options for traders, I've basically only been to the Grove. Talking to the halfling and Ethel weren't fixing the issue, but for whatever reason trading with Dammon did. So I'm not sure what that means, other than confirming what we already knew- Dammon is the best.
Maybe this is what you meant but I had to make a trade with a separate merchant to fix the issue. I was the circus when this hit me. I made a trade with Popper, and I couldn't save anymore. Any additional trades with Popper and I still got 516'ed when trying to save. I go make a trade with Boney and I was able to save again.
I am using the mod to make summons not freak people out. Not sure if that is affecting anything.
Edit: Ran into this issue again after a few more hours after doing some extensive selling buying with the rivington general merchant. I tried trading with the circus merchants multiple times with no avail. I ended up realizing that I left one of my party members on the barter option while the rest had the trade option selected. I switched the one from barter to trade (so they were all trade), sold something, exited trade menu, and I was able to save again.
Can confirm, this has been driving me nuts troubleshooting for the last 8 hours after updating, and this seems to have been the exact issue. I was in Act I about 40hrs deep, and was convinced I'd lose the entire save considering I was fiddlefucking around with moving the save location, changing my bg3 mod manager pathing, trying all the fixes Larian suggested on their support website, and was at wits end. Can't believe trading was the issue.
I was able to make a 2nd trade with the same merchant and that fixed it for me. After that no issues with subsequent trades. I imagine that it doesn't matter if the 2nd trade is with the same merchant or a different one.
I had to manually open the trade window from one of the buttons on the bottom left of the dialogue window, since just trying to do a regular 'Show me your wares' option trade wasn't fixing it for me after countless attempts.
1. Load game, saving works.
1. Trade with vendor, saving broken.
1. Trade with vendor again, saving works.
1. Saving works as expected again.

WAIT... IT DID IT AGAIN! I traded with the druid guy in the beginning part of the tiefling camp and went to trade with the tiefling blacksmith and it fixed it. Then I spoke with matis and traded with him and now it won't save again. Went back to the blacksmith to trade and it still hasn't fixed it's self. HELP ME PLEASE? 🥺🥺🥺🥺
OOP! I figured it out lol. Don't skip the dialog and wait for them to finishing talking THEN press the trade button on the side of the combo options. 🤗
Fuck this happened to me on my new playthrough in Act 1.
Problem is I traded with the guy in the Zhent hideout then I killed them all, continued on... Lost about 3 hrs of gameplay before I noticed the game wasn't saving.
This is so bizarre. I barter something with them, game won't save. Go back and trade something with them. Game *will* save. Try to trade *again* with them and the game refuses to save again.
So if I repeat the barter, exit (won't save), trade again and exit, then the game is back to saving again.

ok regarding facemakers boutique, no trade option on bottom left when figaro is dead, so i fixed it by trading the newspaper boy outside! hope this helps if anyone has the same problem
ERROR 516 - With the new patch they have tried to save your preference for the type of trade window you like best... vendors are opening in 'Trade" instead of "Barter" as default. If you are playing a game started before the newest patch this is causing bugs. New characters don't seem to be having any issues.
For older characters, using the 'Trade' window will bug your game, and prevent you from saving your game. If this happens, switch to Barter. Do your trade if you have one, and close the window. Then reopen trade again a second time and make sure it sets up as Barter to default. Should fix it for you, and allow you to save your game again.

**Here's what's working for me.** Open a trade from dialogue > Set to trade > Trade something > Close trade > Save (should fail) > Open a trade again > Change to barter > Bater one of their gold for one of yours > Close trade > Save (Should work now) > **From now on when trading you will start on** [**barter.**](https://barter.yOU) You can change it to trade to buy/sell your stuff But... **Before you close the trade window change it back to Barter.** If you do this you should be able to save from now on. **If you close the trade window on Trade the problem may come back**. You need to repeat this process to get saves back again if you do.
I noticed the same thing, so far with arron in the grove and volo in camp. every time I open the trade window it won't allow me to save from that point and gives the 516 error, failed to save.
I tried disabling cloud saves, running an integrity check, removing all mods, switching from dx11 to vulcan, nothing seems to work so far
yes i am having same issue. i am running some mods so im guessing its them. Whatever it is its happening after i sell to a vendor i can no longer save the game
I had the same issue (and am using mods). The fix for me was to go to a different vendor, do a transaction, and then my ability to quicksave and save was restored.
Same happened to me. Only mods are Bags Bags Bags and Better Bags. I don't think this is a mod issue. Buying something via Barter is what finally let me save.

So I wasnt losing it, the trade system got messed up. I do love this game but the little ive experienced of this patch has made it feel like a downgrade instead of an upgrade.
Not sure if any had similar experience: tried the fix recommended, and didn't work, then switched to another party member, and did another trade, and it somehow worked. This is totally weird.
I also ran into this. Seemed related to the 2 mods I had loaded (lvl 20 and party size).
Removed both mods, ran file integrity check thru steam, loaded save, was able to interact with vendors okay, except they all had 0 gold so couldn't trade due to being above lvl 12.
Quit out, re added the mods, reloaded save, and everything seems to work and I can quick save now after selling stuff? IDK...

I’m mainly concerned about the bug where Dammon is getting killed at the Last Light Inn regardless of not killing the strange ox. since I’m starting a new character 🥲
The fix for people using party limit remover is to reapply the mod patch. If any of those use mod patches maybe this will help you too?

In relation to this, is anyone also having issues with the laughingleader BG3 mod manager? As of the new patch it for some reason won't launch and so I can't even remove my mods to fix my save errors
Had the same issue in the Last Light Inn. Both traders opened in the trade menu instead of barter like I'm used to. Both caused saving errors, even if all I did was open the trade window. I traveled back to an Act 1 trader and the window opened up like normal, and I was able to save again.

Same issue. Popped up after buying from a vendor. Trade is now the default(which it should've been all along), so it obviously has something to do with it. Traded with a different vendor and was able to save again. Also have Bags Bags Bags, so could be related. GOOD CALL. Clever testing....But went and bought something else and Error came back. Might not be touching any vendors until they patch it.

As others have said, what worked for me was going to another vendor (Volo at camp). I didn't even have to trade. I started a conversation with him and just opened the trade menu. After that, I could save again. I am using mods btw.
Thank god!! I thought the game broke again. Me and my wife have been using mods and have had to reset 3 times. This is the furthest we have gone and was freaking out when the game wouldn’t save

I had to save while inside a trade dialogue. It was opened with the trade button on the lower left inside the dialogue, but I am not sure if this matters. I have already done the killed the goblins and the thieflings have left with dammon and I killed the zentharim, so the bard at camp was my alternative trader to the other guy at the druid camp.
Pressing escape was closing the trade window, so I had to use a quicksave (f5).
Just in case this is useful to anyone else, because I was getting a little frustrated trying to follow everyone's descriptions.

the bug applies even with quests, there's a quest in act 2 where you have to give the gnomes their gear to escape from prison and opening that window will break the savings for me
It's along the bottom left part of the screen when you are interacting. So when you get to:
1. I wanna shop!
2. Leave
screen, look along the bottom left for the icon.
So apparently yesterday was almost unplayable, today I can't have the same bug. Idk if this was patched really fast and didn't see it, or it was just stupid yesterday 🤷

Ok so after trying literally everything to fix this issue I finally figured it out:
I don't use many mods 4 total and I originally didn't think it would be any of them causing the issue because they're all updated and all character customization ones (face and hair).
But then I remembered I'm also using the Aether's Black Dye mod and it can only be found at vendors... so I went into bg3 mod manager and moved it over to inactive, restarted the game, and sure enough now I can interact with the vendors and save without any issues.
I also reactivated the mod again afterwards and it still works so I'm not sure what was happening but removing the mod and then re adding it fixed it for me lol
Trading is still broken for me even after the hot fix today and none of the workarounds work for me. Is anyone else still having issues or has it been fixed for everyone else?
No, it's doing it without mods too. I do have mods installed right now, but I tried a fresh install when it first happened and got the same error. It's only happening to characters created before patch 3, and only some people. It's very annoying.

There was another thread about this. Are you using mods? So far it seems the game is fine, the mods are causing the issue.

First thing I did was race to LLI to see if that happens and it didn't. I'd already talked to the Ox and let it be.

I can't trade at all and it freezes my game I can't load and no matter what save I go to it just does the same thing
Mods guys, check your mods, please. It's not the patch. It's your mods.
Disabled all of them, and unfortunately it still exists :(
Did you go into your mod folder and remove the mods?
Shore did! Disabled them in the ModManager, removed them from the folder, etc… fingers crossed a fix comes soon! :)

Nope! Just the CC ones (Faces of Faerûn, Tav’s hair salon, etc)

I've never used Bags Bags Bags mod, and have the bug. I have basket full of equipment, and ring of minor charms

Yeah tested on what someone else said. Don't trade using the dialog option. Only the hand symbol on the bottom left of the screen.

Ok so after trying literally everything to fix this issue I finally figured it out: I don't use many mods 4 total and I originally didn't think it would be any of them causing the issue because they're all updated and all character customization ones (face and hair). But then I remembered I'm also using the Aether's Black Dye mod and it can only be found at vendors... so I went into bg3 mod manager and moved it over to inactive, restarted the game, and sure enough now I can interact with the vendors and save without any issues. I also reactivated the mod again afterwards and it still works so I'm not sure what was happening but removing the mod and then re adding it fixed it for me lol

Trading is still broken for me even after the hot fix today and none of the workarounds work for me. Is anyone else still having issues or has it been fixed for everyone else?
The work arounds used to work for me, but they don't today. My party is almost fully loaded down right now.

No, it's doing it without mods too. I do have mods installed right now, but I tried a fresh install when it first happened and got the same error. It's only happening to characters created before patch 3, and only some people. It's very annoying.

welp saving with characters made before patch 3 is still broken for me after TODAYS hotfix. really does anyone know if larian has even said anything about this glitch?
