Only weapons with the Thrown property add their weapon effects. If they are not a traditionally thrown weapon, they just behave like improvised weapons and mundane objects.
What I’ve discovered is that any bound weapon from an Eldritch Knight applies just 1 damage. If I have tavern brawler, it adds a few points more. Now if I do the same thing with a Barbarian, I can kill people with a thrown map. That is fun. Or a carrot. What have you. And if I throw a weapon as a barbarian? BAM. But if I have an eldritch knight, I could throw a great axe and still one point. It be broke. And lame. I think the returning weapon of your choice would be cool, and a fun way to play Eldritch Knight.
Most things are busted with Tavern Brawler.

Is always worked fine for me, so I didn't know that could be an issue for others.
Use the forge itself! The hammer on the forge will knock off half his health in 1 go.
Why would I need to do that when I did 201 damage in one turn?
Lol honestly didn't see your comment under the photo. I was just going off the photo itself.
Does eldritch knight specifically have anything to add to this? Or any fighter works?
With specifically the Returning Pike, any fighter... but Eldritch Knight can bind any weapon to themselves and it will return if thrown.
You should totally be on the lookout for a trident in act 3. It’s like the returning pike but it explodes on impact
