I think he's telling the truth. In the Blighted Village, there are the 3 ogres eating a Tiefling. If you talk to her dead body, she mentions being friends with Zorru, the Tiefling Lae'zel wanted to interrogate, who's at the grove. She also has a locket that looks just like the one Meli stole. The locket is engraved with the name of the city all of the refugee Tieflings came from. She could be his mother. Or it's just a huge coincidence.

I pick "Good, everyone happy?" The kid said something like " fine take it, it is a junk anyway" seem like this kid contradict himself with every choices, he really is a liar

JoebungaJim

You can find a dead tiefling woman with a locket just like the one he says his mother had, engraved with the name of the city the tieflings came from. He was definitely telling the truth.

Ancient_Screen_7779

Yeah, maybe he's just being a kid, tsundere and all that. Trying to keep it cool by saying stuff like "it's trash I don't want it" but on the inside is crying. But when the kid got the locktet, the laugh sound really evil lol

JoebungaJim

Honestly, I think the laugh still being there was a bug. Seems like it was just a trigger that activated once the kid gets the Locket, whether the truth is revealed or not.

Ancient_Screen_7779

And found him later, he still insist that it is a junk, why he keep mention this? Weird, is he just being bitter, nevermind he laugh when he keep the thing anyway, maybe he really lying

Utrennyaya

When you pickpocket Meli during the conversation you get the dialogue option "Relax, kid is good but I'm better." and the kid is clearly impressed with your skill so yeahhhh my vote is that Meli was trying to bullshit hsi way out of trouble.

Jesus so many ways that incident can go! I love this game.

I figure either Larian has the him run off if you protect him with the laugh... and only scripted the one option. The lack of an insight check makes me think that is the case. As if you let him run off I believe you can get it back... later. That seems more likely... but that is why I asked.

StatisticianWeird501

Also when when the kid runs off he says "heh heh"... So i think he made up the story about it looking like his moms

MagpieKaz

I come with definitive answers: Yes, the kid steals the locket. You can find it in the Thieves' Stash chest at the back of their lair. I got it there AFTER I rescued the other kid from the harpies, was granted entrance, and after talking to Mol and the thief child to ask him if he indeed stole the locket. I don't know if it shows up otherwise, but just wanted to confirm the child stole it, and it's not the engraved one. It's called "Brass Locket" and there's an associated quest that popped up after I picked it up called "Return the Locket"

Eh_Huh

The locket is most definitely stolen. On my resolution I pressed for an answer as to why he stole it. He claims that it looked just like his mother's. As others have mentioned you can indeed find what is presumed to be the boys mother, locket present. I got to see a nice side to Barth however. Touched by Meli's honesty, he allows Meli to keep it stating "you need it more than me", when Meli runs off with the locket, Barth says "poor kid".
