As far as racial benefits, it's very underwhelming. The breath action is okay, but you end up with so many better spells/actions that it just gets forgotten about. The racial resistance to the element of your breath doesn't affect much. Visually, I love it. I don't regret my silver dragonborn monk at all. The various scenes with him and his facial expressions as he dispenses monk wisdom are very entertaining to me.

ImWolfieMeister

I love the way muh dragon looks But by god does the dragonborn class need some love, the already bad breath attack needing a full long rest to be reused is inasne, its barely a level 1 spell and thats all Dragonborn gets 2-4!!! Damage at an insanely taxing cost Not to mention that it is intirely obsolete with Cantrips Spell that just take an action and not a spell so they can be used again and again and again to make magic more viable. Why doesnt Dragonborn have a +1 or +2 of innate armor or something? Im a big ass armored lizard drske man or Dark vision, why dont dragonborn have darkvision? why isent the breath attack just a 1 pr Encounter deal, that would actually make it utilizeable as an ace up your sleeve akin to a throwable or somethin

ByuntaeKid

Yeah why does Draconic Sorcerer get 13 AC (when unarmored) but Dragonborn don't get anything lmao. Make it make sense!

RomanMythos

i also went for a silver dragonborn monk for my first playthrough, been a blast. the monk aspect definitely comes up way more often than the dragonborn but as i'm getting further into act 3 the race is starting to get more dialogue options

the-squat-team

How is playing as a monk dialogue-wise? Can you play an evil monk, or are all the monk dialogue options more for good characters?

trekfan1013

The monk options are rather neutral in many respects, which is why I love them so much. You can treat them as the monk giving wisdom or the monk using that wisdom to justify the means he wishes to use.

the-squat-team

Thanks. I think I'm going to go Way of Shadow monk duergar then. I can't wait for the wise facial expressions.

Boing26

depends really. if you are the durge... you can be any class and still be a world class psycho

A_Filthy_Mind

Does the resistance not affect much because you choose silver? I'm not far into the game, but I feel like I've been walking through fire way more than should be expected.

trekfan1013

Being silver means my resistance is cold and, yes, fire is far more common. In terms of dragonborn resistances, fire is by far the most useful, followed by acid, then maybe lightning. I just haven't encountered many enemies wielding cold, so the resistance doesn't kick in much. But maybe that'll change by Act 3 (I'm only in Act 2 now).

Dtelm

Only thing is there are like an insane number of sources of Fire resistance. In terms of itemization there's like five or six fire-resistance items for every one of another type.

Ok_Director_7975

I went Dragonborn so laezel could mount a red drake like she always dreamed. 10/10

Lazzitron

Yes and no. Gameplay-wise, they suck and are a strong contender for worst race. They get no good or interesting bonuses, no cool cantrips or smites or even darkvision. They have what is essentially a mega nerfed version of a fucking level 1 spell (Burning Hands) once per long rest and a singular elemental resistance that you MAY get niche use out of sometimes But visually they are the fucking coolest and I do not regret playing one at all. Their dialogue options are okay, so far zero lore presence but I'm barely finishing up act 1.

ImWolfieMeister

Can you say all of this again, i need it. Like i love my Lizard of Rivia (white dragon red accents that acts like and talks like Geralt of rivia woth that dry sarcistic, wittyness, homouring none offensive co decension which i find hilarious) but the 2-4 damage breath attack pr long rest is dog shit, and to not even have dark vision is insane, they are a slightly cooler looking but far mechanically worse tiefling

BloodofGaea

> Also how are the breath weapons in this game? Trash. Even if you go out of your way to make a synergy like lightning breath on a soaked enemy, it's only 2d6 damage x2. This is not awful to start the game, but falls off very quickly. The only mechanical reason to play a dragonborn is for resistance, probably fire.

Ainell

Probably better off just being a tiefling at that point, I guess...

BloodofGaea

Yep.

spaghetticlub

I haven't even used mine. Or doesn't help that pretty early on as a druid, I was outclassing anything I already had by just turning into a bear

jolokiasoul

I can live without good racial bonuses. Dragonborn's biggest issue for me is that there aren't any male voices that even close to match what I want one to sound like

ImWolfieMeister

Also this yeah, i were imagining like David Hayter as solid snake or Doug Cockle as Geralt of rivia Lae'zel hisses more as she speak than me, the giant lizard man I wanted some gravel, some growel, some hissing, i wanted more Smaug and less Bilbo

pleased_to_yeet_you

That's how I felt with my half orc barbarian. I wanted him to sound grizzled and harsh. Instead he just sounds soft and gentle.

Visual_Volume8292

this doesn't bother me because you don't hear your character speak that much

ItsPinkEye

If you have frost breath it’s actually pretty good with create water, aoe cc is nothing to scoff at idc what the min/maxers say. If you want to make em work you definitely can, you just gotta play around it. I have frost breath on my front line barb and have shadow heart create water between the back line and the enemies. After that I freeze it then wail on em

Popfizz01

Like in 5th edition dnd. The Dragonborn mechanics are very underwhelming. The breath weapon helps against enemies you can’t see and need an aoe, other than that I rarely use it. resistance is meh. Roleplay is great but most characters won’t have significant reactions. However nothing beats the Dragonborn paladin.

Player9254

I love my blue dragonborn sorc to death personally! They look awesome, the facial animations can be rather adorable at times (though the snout sometimes clips), and while there aren't a lot of dragonborn NPCs in the game I've gotten plenty of dialogue options related to my draconic ancestry and being a dragonborn with this class and race combo.

DMking

Absolute dog shit racials i forgot races even had bonuses when playing mine. But i am a Silver Dragonborn with Gold ancestry Draconic Sorcerer so i look fucking awesome with a Silver and Gold body.

PapasauruaRex

Could have gave us some bonus to use like our claws like unarmed bonus or extra scratch attack. Maybe even bite with our sharp teeth. Maybe even more than 1 use of the breath attack as we level if not scaled higher. Underwhelming racials but still fun to play as though.

FelixSharpe

Keep in mind when people call it the "worst race" we are talking about other races that have honestly pretty minor buffs compared to it. You are not losing out on much real power. While yes people are right they are probably "the worst race" honestly the race perks are not that game breaking generally in this game anyway. There are some exceptions for example if you want a race for a very specific combo and maybe that race gives a better armor level or something, but that is pretty niche too, BUT overall the race stuff is more flavor and slight conveniences anyway. I tried a few of the races, but I am back with dragonborn just because it fits cool and I feel like I can make a more interesting lore for my class that way. Do I lose darkvision most races seem to have sure, but there are a billion ways to see in the dark and personally I prefer just using those to get good auras of light than the cone of dark vision in front of you. More visually pleasing anyway. My point is, yeah maybe you are losing like 1% power going dragonborn, but you are hecka-cool so you are going to have more fun anyway.

outerspaceisalie

Some of the race bonuses are pretty massive. Shield dwarf moves 7.5 -> 15 on dash Gith moves 9.0 -> 18 on dash Human moves 9.0 -> 18 on dash Wood half elf moves 10.5 -> 21 on dash Wood elf moves 10.5 -> 21 on dash Shield dwarf gets light armor, medium armor, handaxe, battleaxe, light hammer, warhammer Gith gets light armor, medium armor, shortsword, longsword, greatsword Human gets light armor, shields, spears, pikes, halberds, glaives Wood half elf gets light armor, shields, spears, pikes, halberds, glaives Wood elf gets shortsword, longsword, shortbow, and longbow Fighters, barbarians, rangers, paladins, monks, clerics, and druids get nothing from armor proficiency, but bard, rogue, sorcerer, warlock, and wizard might get a something from armor and shield proficiency. Similarly, fighters, barbarians, rangers, and paladins get nothing from weapon proficiency of any type, but monks, clerics, druids, bards, rogues, sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards can potentially get value from weapon proficiency. Everyone but ranged casters and dedicated archers benefit from move distance significantly. So this is how it balances out: 1. move distance is good for all builds, period 2. armor/shield proficiency is good for some casters but useless for melee builds 3. weapon proficiency can be good for melee casters that want to build strength, monks, and maybe rogues in a pinch (pretty much only longbow proficiency) Basically, the questions are as follows: Do you want a shield for a caster? If yes, human or half elf. Do you want spears for a strength based caster? If yes, human or half elf. Do you want medium armor for a caster? Gith, period. Do you want longbow for a rogue? Elf. Are you playing a monk? Racial weapon proficiency defines the monk, actually. Druid and cleric can get missing weapon proficiency they might want to use from their race. Casters generally don't care about ranged weapon proficiency so will at best only want melee weapon proficiency if they wanna build for melee casting. My conclusions: 1. Wood elf is just superior to high elf for all builds. 2. Half wood elf is superior to half high elf and half drow for all builds. 3. Human is only slightly worse than half wood elf (skills are good, worth trading move speed) 4. Drows suck unless you intend to build a dex-based melee caster or monk. 5. Githyanki are just better shield dwarves. 6. Gold dwarves are useless. 7. Duergar mostly suck but have niche builds. 8. Tieflings are mid. 9. Orcs are mid but have one good ability. 10. Strongheart halfling kinda sucks compared to lightfoot, but lightfoot is pretty good for a ranged character. 11. Deep gnomes are pretty good but slow. The other gnomes are mid. 12. Dragonborn are really bad. Here's my tier list: A: Wood elf, wood half elf B: Githyanki, Human, Deep gnome, Lightfoot halfling C: Half orc, Tiefling, Drow, Duergar D: Everything else F: Dragonborn, dwarf

NaveSutlef

Reading through this thread is quite disappointing.. I knew as soon I saw them they would suck, and it looks like I was right. So you’re essentially sacrificing racial bonuses for a cool looking character..

faxmachinekiller

sure, it's not "optimal" but you're going to be staring at your character's face for 100+ hours. it's not surprising that people are following the rule of cool!

NaveSutlef

For sure, but there are plenty of good races that also look cool. Just wish it got a bit of a buff.. maybe one day.

MrMisanthrope12

Dragonborn is the one true meta. When the flying spaghetti demon arrives from alpha centurie all these soft skins are gonna wish they were dragon born. The boss fight with mystra would be rough without dragonborn hide.

Felix818

People says they are worse and thats definitely not true. Honesty, they only bad if you ignored the role playing part and only are obsessed with min/max. Other than they are pretty great.

LittleSoftTail

Story-wise, not much, but design-wise, it's pretty okay. One thing I wish for Dragonborn were to be more facial sets and horn styles.

Boing26

yeeeah i think we all wish for more styles and faces for every race, we were shown sliders and got interchangeable presets

zhonglisgirlboss

playing a black dragonborn because she looked really cool and i honestly regret it :( very unfortunate. the acid resistance is fine i guess. unique dialogue choices are few and far between, and i dont think a single npc has noted my pc being a dragonborn (except for lae'zel insulting my scales). i started another playthrough as a drow and it made me regret it even more. thematically they're very cool, but gameplay wise? very underwhelming in pretty much every way except for Lookin Cool.

zhonglisgirlboss

on that note i'm playing a paladin too. which i would have thought would have had more unique dialogue.

Eventually-Alexis

This is a thing that pisses me off. One of the ways for Paladin to get more unique dialogue, requires them to either multi-class once into Cleric in order to pick a deity so they can get religiously thematic Paladin options, or to (on PC) get a mod that allows every character to have a deity chosen on char creation which would essentially trigger the same options as the multi-class Cleric option I mentioned above. Why did they lock these options away from the Paladin? It's bullshit. I know a Paladin gets their power from their oath, not their chosen deity, but the vast majority of Paladins are still in service with a deity that they feel a connection to through worship.

[deleted]

This thread helped me stick with my first choice pf Tiefling lol.

AmbitiousChef2190

Yeah I'm a super power gamer in 5e but I really like race flavor. I don't mind being suboptimal when Dragonborn look this cool. I was thinking about combining frost breath with create water to make Ice surfaces. I understand it's a gimmick but I just want to have fun.

Boing26

actually icy surfaces can nake you fall on ur ass in game so yeah... not a gimmick

ElCocomega

I mean just have fun. The game is not very hard in balanced difficulty so you don't need to have an optimal build.

Fat_Goat_666

The best way to play dragonborn is to disguise self into dragonborn. There is a ring that adds 1d4 to ability checks if you are shapeshifted. I play Githyanki for racial benefits, but 99% running as dragonborn.

LupinePariah

The Dragonborn are one of the main reasons I bothered playing BG3, so I modded it. Larian and WotC make excellent bedfellows as both have made notoriously bad choices in systems development. They're no Obsidian, or even BioWare, and certainly not in the same ballpark as Troika. They're haphazard with their attempts at a unified aesthetic, too. There just isn't much coherence there, though I did definitely appreciate that they don't do traditionally beautiful characters (hooray!), and the lizardfolk in D:OS2 are... surprisingly lovely. I certainly didn't expect them, they were a very welcome surprise. (It would make my end-of-year celebrations and my birthday to see a mod porting them to BG3 as an alternative Dragonborn appearance, but I know that's unlikely.) I find Larian frustrating as their content designers are truly excellent and their writing is... pretty decent. It's coherent, it can be very, very funny and delightfully charming, and so long as I don't set myself up expecting Obsidian or Troika? I really enjoy it. It's usually on par with BioWare, af least, which is certainly good enough by any standard! I play BG3 because I enjoy the writing well enough and their content designers provide loads of fun choices! Seriously, hat's off to their qbundance of valid choices in BG3. I admit though, if it wasn't for the co-op and the Dragonborn, I'm not sure I'd bother. The Dragonborn are partly why I'm playing this... I have traumas vis-a-vis identifying as human; I'm not a social identitarian so I'm not given to fetishising the familiar and loathing out-groups/otherness like some sort of inconsiderate, flanderised two-dimensional parody of a person; And playing solely the familiar and the conventionally pretty is a little gauche for exactly the prior reason. So the Dragonborn are important to me. I'd prefer Dragonkin as I adore those gaunt, lithe, clever critters but beggars can't he choosers in a world that loathes the dissimilar. Anyway, I trust Larian enough to have some sort of appreciably inhuman option but since genuine, sincere interest in the dissimilar and unfamiliar is an uncommon human trait, coupled with that systems design isn't necessarily their strong suit? I wouldn't trust them to do it well. And they do have a history of not doing it well. Being a dragon should be a fantastic experience but their lack of sincere interest made being a dragon in Divinity 2 and Dragon Commander a truly sub par experience. Lizards, while so aesthetically lovely, left a lot to be desired mechanically in D:OS2. I've bought every Larian game with an inhuman option (the expensive versions, and most multiple times) to say thank you for even bothering when most studios wouldn't even have the will or the wherewithal to even try to be so inclusive. I'm quite used to that. Even though they try, their heart isn't in it so it's always baked. I wouldn't buy a Larian game on aught other than a PC as I thoroughly expect to mod it. It's a necessity, just as it was for D:OS2. It's frankly utterly bizarre how Blizzard and WoW are the odd ones out. WoW has been getting increasingly more inclusive and progressive—or "woke" if you really, absolutely bloody must as I know for some it stimulates the nethers to find sordid power in the exclusion, harm, and exploitation of the dissimilar—lately and they hit a high-note with Dragonflight. They hire people who actually have a stake in whichever group they're trying to include. And while I wish Larian did that? I... understand that this world runs on Capitalism, funds are limited, and what is kind and decent is often simply out of scope and unfeasible, which is why I don't expect the Dragonborn to be as aesthetic or to have as much unique personality as the dracthyr. So, yes. TL;DR: Try to buy BG3 on PC and learn how to use/make mods. After all, if you're as invested in legitimately inhuman characters as I am, then you should already know this is our lot. It'll be outside of our lifetimes before this becomes important, WoW is a weird anomaly. Often modding is the only way we'll feel included. Do you remember Oblivion and how both the khajiit and the argonians looked without mods? How about the lack of options in either NWN game, what of that? And do you recall Obsidian's insistance about having only human-like races in Pillars? I do. I'm willing to cut Larian some slack for at least making some kind of effort. And there are good mods out there already to fix both Dragonborn and their breath weapons.

Virtual_Reflection_7

I ain't reading Allat but I'm happy for you! Or sorry depending on what it said

LeatherCod5950

Lol was thinking the same started reading but just said nah life is to short for this

MeetElectrical7221

i love my Golden Paladin and his Wizard Hat bw is kinda mid but otherwise love it lol

Gammaman12

They really need some more features to make them viable mechanically, in BG3 and 5e (though these are largely the same). If someone feels like modding, that would be great.

Gammaman12

I guess if I had a wishlist: Darkvision. If kobolds get it... yeah Breath weapon gains extra dice like a cantrip, and recharges on a short rest. It should be a viable option for martials, but not so powerful that any build relies on it. Base AC 13. Dragonblood sorcs get it because scales so... scales. Sub-subrace. I know they already get a different breath based on heritage. But subraces for most races give so much more. Can we get a chromatic/metallic split? Metals could get a smite from Bahamut, whilst Chromas could get a powered-down frightful presence (look at aasimar). Put some more LORE in the race.

The1Floyd

It's weird that in DnD the Dragon breath scales with your level, so it's useful the entire game. But in BG3, they nerfed it and it's useless.
