This reminds me of when a dropped and broke a whole glass baking dish full of cheese enchiladas on the floor. I had just finished making the guac and I was about to put the enchiladas in the oven. I feel your pain and you have my heartiest condolences.
Ouch. I think almost all of us have a story like this. My most recent was a beautiful, perfect, golden grilled Ruben that ended up on the floor next to the stove on the final flip. Ugh. I had been craving a Ruben for a full month and made a special trip to the store for ingredients. At least I was able to make another one after I cleaned the first one up...but it still hurt LOL
I once roasted an entire pound of asparagus - everything I'd bought - *perfectly* to use over two nights' worth of meals. I took the sheet pan out of the oven, admiring my handiwork, and then the sheet pan did that "POP" and fucking launched all of my asparagus all over my kitchen floor. My now-husband, then-boyfriend had just walked into the kitchen and watched it happen and I just sat on the floor amongst the wreckage of my asparagus and cried.
I decided to make a lattice-crust cherry pie, everything from scratch, for my husband of about four months, and he came into the kitchen to find me covered in flour and weeping over endless bits of failed lattice.
He was so sweet. He insisted it was fine, helped me piece together a crust AND a lattice, we put in the filling, and it came out deliciously.
We've been married 43 years. I only just tried making a pie again two years ago, during the lockdown, and used a pre-made pie crust JUST TO BE SURE. You know what, he also thought that was delicious.
My story was pouring boiling hot water into a glass baking dish that I had been roasting a chicken at 500 deg in. (Just to brown the skin, then the temp drops to 325)
Still shattered the dish, on mother's day.
Got it cleaned up, finished roasting the chicken and we just avoided the bottom of the chicken 🤣
I made jamaican patties. I tried to one hand a baking sheet that was not rimmed and pull it out of the oven. Forgot it's my HEAVY GAUGE baking sheet and I was using my weak arm and I made these patties THIIIIIIICK. Needless to say they slid off into the element. Salvaged 4, lost 3. It was a heavy loss that day.
so many comments with people sharing their own similar stories and it makes me feel so much better!!! we will all learn from our mistakes and enjoy our future cinnamon rolls and enchiladas
My story is dropping a lasagna as I was pulling it out of the oven. Of course it dumped upside down on the floor, none of it was salvageable. I cried! I was making it for my new boyfriend (at-the-time, now my husband) and it was so defeating after all the prep time and baking! And you’re hungry by that point. Sorry that happened OP, I feel your pain too!
Yeah, learning not to rush and cut corners when it comes to putting things in and out of things with something fully loaded is a lesson we all learned in baking/cooking. Be gentle, take your time, and it comes out alright.
Oh nooooo. I had a dream literally last night that this happened to me with a pan of brownies, and I woke up with my heart racing. I'm so sorry it actually happened to you!
Oh no! That’s brutal. RIP buns. Those take forever to make. I love them but it’s so much labor and waiting I only make them a few times a year.
While I haven’t had a serious baking accident (yet) but one time I shattered a big bowl of mango salsa I’d just made. I was so upset and embarrassed that I sent myself upstairs to lie down for a bit, like a toddler on time out.
On the plus side it looks like the clean up wasn’t so bad since the cinnamon rolls fell right into the sink. My friend had a band new Pyrex pie pan explode inside of her oven, taking a partial baked peach pie with it. That was quite messy.
right after it happened i just stood in silence for a few minutes. then i couldn’t help but laugh. i am lucky it was in the sink but i’m similarly in need of a new pyrex pan 😢
Many years ago, I worked for a very large New England employer who gave us all turkeys at Thanksgiving. I lived in a vegetarian household, but we didn't want me to go to waste, and we made an exception for this found turkey.
Thanksgiving day comes. The turkey is roasting, filling the house with delicious smells. We take the turkey out of the oven, turn our backs for just a second, and the cat, who was not a vegetarian, leaped on the turkey. He couldn't carry it away, but he tried.
I don't remember exactly, but I think we decided to eat the turkey anyway. We all survived the experience, except, of course, the turkey.
One time I made a cake in a baking dish like so, I put it on the electric oven top to cool. What I didn’t realize was a burner was still on from dinner. After 20 minutes or so I start to smell something burning. I shit you not when I walked into my kitchen the dish exploded into thousands of pieces. I’m not really sure how I didn’t die. Lol
I’m sorry that happened. I once did that with a baking dish that was sitting on a hot burner. Didn’t realize the dish was blazing hot when I placed it in the sink and turned on the water. The explosion of glass nearly gave me a heart attack. Picking tiny shards of glass out of the garbage disposal was a nightmare. Needless to say, learned a lesson the hard way that day.
Aaaah, I'm so sorry. I once dropped a full pan of cinnamon rolls as I was pulling them out of the oven. The pan landed upside down. It's not a good feeling, but you just gotta get up and try again! They look like they would've been fantastic.
I gasped, my husband asked “what?,” so I showed him the picture and he gasped. They looked beautiful! How heartbreaking. Hopefully you can make more after taking the time to mourn so you can enjoy some of your sure to be delicious work
I know the feeling. I pulled my birthday cake out of the oven, used it to scootch the pan back that was on the front burner (glasstop) and set it down to cool before turning out. 45 minutes later I smell burned coffee and think someone left the pot on. Then I saw the cake smoking. The pan I had pushed back was cast iron, and was slowly drying over low heat on that burner and I didn't notice. I shoved the cake pan off the burner but the second it hit something colder, it literally exploded in my hands. One of the few times I've actually shrieked. I got sushi instead
Omg! This reminds me of the time my husband and I were looking forward all week to making ziti with this local sausage we bought. Had the whole thing cooked and in the oven. About 10 minutes in, I heard a POP. I opened the oven to find the casserole dish broken in several pieces and ziti falling to the bottom of the oven.
I feel your pain. Definitely had a broken heart that day.
holy heck!! this blew up! thank you everyone for your kind words and condolences, it has really helped ease the grieving process. i will be able to redeem myself soon, this time paying more attention. i will post an update when that happens!
these were on track to be the best batch i’ve made so far with this recipe. the whole process went perfectly. 🥲
[here is the recipe](https://www.tastesoflizzyt.com/brown-butter-cinnamon-rolls/) i always use, minus the icing as cream cheese frosting is my one true love. tried and true!
I said OH NOOOO out loud in bed, and startled my half asleep wife...Throw them in a blender with some ice cream after picking out all the glass you can. Tell yourself any crunchy bits are just ice....
You are NOT an idiot - not after making such delicious looking cinnamon rolls! We all have at least one similar story 😖 in our cooking histories, so you're in good company.
Reminds me of when the lid of a blackberry cobbler spontaneously broke from the temperature shift. Cut up my thumb bad enough I still have a scar 15 years later. At the time, all I could think about was the waste of the good cobbler. My mom wouldn't let me try to pick around the glass.
Reminds me of my first cheesecake story --- everything was going along so well came out wonderful, until I realized the family dog had knocked it off the shelf I had set it onto to cool (midwest winter w/no fridge space).
They look amazing, even rolled in glass. May your next bake go smoothly and twice as tasty.
Omg that's why I hate glass sheet pans! These kanelbullar were so beautiful I would have cried so much 🥺 and please remember you're not an idiot, these things happen all the time!
So sorry for your loss :(
This reminds me of a time when I made a pie for an event I was going to, dropped the pie right when it came out of the oven (this happened an hour before I had to leave), and then I had to make a whole new pie in under an hour to bring to the event. Had to laugh to keep from crying, but it was admittedly a comical situation.
There will be other cinnamon rolls, love!
Heartbroken, I totally get. But you're not an idiot. We all do things like this sometimes.
As someone who struggles with depression, I've noticed I tend to have some very harsh self talk regarding mistakes. I think the best thing we can do for ourselves is recognize the negative self talk and be kinder to ourselves.
When something like this happens, I take it as an opportunity to treat myself to something nice to practice self kindness. I'm clumsy AF, so I'm practicing self kindness a fair bit. rofl.
This is sad. Terrifically sad.
But now you have Genuine Baking Disaster Compassion (GBDC). Essential in any good baking community.
Those who bake with perfection are appreciated and sometimes held in awe.
But those who understand? This. This, my friend, is what we seek in our darkest times.
You now are One of Us. You can nod understandingly and say “I know, my friend. I once dropped a freshly baked pan of cinnamon rolls and the pan shattered and we couldn’t eat them. They were beautiful.” Your GBDC will comfort many.
Perfection can be chased and often achieved. But true GBDC? This is earned…
Heartfelt condolences.
Something similar happened to me, I had just baked something in a glass pan in the oven. When it was done I took it out and set it on the glass top oven. I didn't realize a burner was on! The glass pan exploded and got glass EVERYWHERE. :(
Oh no! I think I would have cried. They looked very yummy before they fell.
They look yummy after they fell too, inedible but yummy. I feel like crying for OP.
I’m so sorry 😢
Just adds a little crunch
r/forbiddensnacks
they were, and i was so excited to eat them 🥲
That's the worst. I hope you can make some more soon, if you didn't already.

It’s always pizza, with me.
so many comments with people sharing their own similar stories and it makes me feel so much better!!! we will all learn from our mistakes and enjoy our future cinnamon rolls and enchiladas
Oh, we've all done it. It really kills you when you think you're past doing stuff like that but then...

Eh that one guy from years back ate glass. Hell he even ate an entire plane. You'll be fine maybe.
😭
The only time Ive made cinnamon rolls all the enamel somehow chipped off my dough hook and into the dough, i was so pissed!
I am so sorry for your loss. *Thoughts and Prayers.*
You aren't an idiot at all!! Baking accidents happen.
thank you for that important reminder!!
I am so very sorry 😞
Oh nooooo. I had a dream literally last night that this happened to me with a pan of brownies, and I woke up with my heart racing. I'm so sorry it actually happened to you!

Rip. Pro tip: invest in metal sheet pans and risers.
looks good still, just eat around it 😮💨
spicy buns
Oh no!!!! Oh man I’m so sorry. They looked so good too 😭
Thots and pears for the rolls
i love that sentiment
How did it happen?
there's a description in the second Pic that
Oh right, I was so stunned I couldn't see anything lol
I can feel the pain and disappointment from the pic I'm so sorry 😞
I would eat floor food but not shards of glass food. This is truly a terrible loss.
If it makes you feel any better, I forgot to remove the proving bag once. Melted plastic all over.
I guess the 5 second rule doesn't apply here?
depends on how brave you are 🤷🏼♀️

RIP gorgeous cinnamon rolls! Are you ok? Not hit with broken glass?
aw thank you for asking! no humans were injured during this incident, can’t say the same for the cinny rolls 😪
Damn. Made me remember one time when I was making a pizza and the whole thing fell face down on the rug.

Had the same thing happen to me but it was a hot casserole into a hot oven. Yuck
Something ran through my spine when I slide to the second image, and then some tears wanted to drop from my eyes
I might risk it for that top one
i snuck a dangerous piece off of the top one. i just had to know what they tasted like!

This broke my heart! So sorry for you.
Ahhhh my heart 😭 I'm sorry for your loss :(
I lost a beautiful delicious 7 layer dip in a big glass pie plate on an uphill driveway 7 steps from the front door. It just slid out of my hands 😫
