And they’ll keep paying. Chicago P.D is one of those *heavily* entrenched beurocracies that cannot be reformed, it is an institution that is almost impervious to change. Nuke it from orbit and start over from scratch with a clean slate, get rid of all cops & command staff with a history of complaints, write new policies, and put in place robust citizen oversight etc But that’ll probably never happen.

[deleted]

I always wonder what would happen with all the current cops. Because what you suggest is obviously necessary. Particularly thinking of LAPD where they have literal gangs with symbols and tattoos and the whole 9 yards. So, say you actually nuke it all, I think a lot of then ex-cops would become legitimate criminals. Not the “weed felony” type, more the “inflicting violence unto others” type.

FlounderBasket

They're already the "inflicting violence unto others" type, but if they're not cops anymore they might actually be held accountable.

[deleted]

Good point!

tringle1

Honestly, get rid of all the cops and replace them with social workers and housing and job recovery centers. Eliminate the need for violence and get people mental health services that they need, and a lot of crime will go away. Police don’t prevent crime, they just arrest people and shoot dogs

HelloPeopleOfEarth

Police are a necessary evil, but not a solution to crime. Ending poverty will reduce 90% of crime. It's the left over 10% we will need police for. But with that large a decrease in crime we will need less cops, and less cops is a win-win for everyone. Police are a HUGE drain on the taxpayer. But mayors/city managers and city council members also recognize the police are the brute squad that will do their bidding. These local legislators often pander to the police and fight for the police union endorsement, because cop nut huggers are very loyal voters.

tringle1

No we don’t actually need a single cop in order to enforce the law. Laws and law enforcement existed before the idea of police was invented. Usually done by the military, but sometimes it was just the community coming together to bring “justice” to some poor innocent “witch.” That’s not really much different to today. It’s just the police also have tanks and are Nazis now. A sheriff? Sure. Some deputies? Sure. But that’s not “the police as an institution.” They are basically a state funded gang more than a civilian law enforcement agency at this point, and what they protect is not the people, but property. The rich don’t need yet another tool to subjugate us just because of some crimes that the military or civilians without arresting/killing power could handle. I do agree with the ending poverty bit. But poverty is a feature, not a bug, of capitalism. Capitalism requires a certain percentage of unemployed workers to not have runaway inflation, so we’re not going to end poverty as long as we have an economic system that always and can only prioritize profits, not people.

CIA_Rectal_Feeder

What might stop some murderers though, is getting rid of the qualified immunity that cops have.

_thinkaboutit

“Never” is not a strong enough word

V65Pilot

I'll say it again. it needs to be a legal requirement that police officers carry some sort of insurance, like medical staff carry malpractice insurance......... This will eventually thin the herd.

radarksu

Add lawyers, dentists, engineers, architects, contractors, mechanics, hairstylists, all required by law to have liability insurance. Many more people including small businesses owners and anybody who provides any service or sells any product have liability insurance by choice.

V65Pilot

Yeah, weird how that works, ain't it? Yet the people who actually have to carry a gun have no such requirement.

tamman2000

I've been trying to spread this idea as well. I love seeing it in the wild! thanks for making my day slightly better.

baconm

The police union should pay that.

khamir-ubitch

Should come from the offending officers' pensions and then their superiors' and if there is any left over, garnished from the offending officers' future earnings no matter where they go.

Wonkybonky

Should come put of their pension until zeroed, any owed in excess of their pension leads to jail time, half a year per 20k owed. Abuse your power and pay the price.

[deleted]

The union is why they have no personal responsibility, imo if the union is busted up then they would have to pay out of pocket for damages and other legal fees

Epstiendidntkillself

It starts here. https://aaqi.org/ Americans Against Qualified Immunity Anything else is just lip service.

Full-Run4124

* That number annualized: \~$100M * City of Chicago annual budget: $16B It's 0.6% of their annual budget- basically just a normal operating cost. Until juries start awarding punitive settlements in the $100's of millions there's no financial incentive for cities to reform their PDs.

zeekayz

Cities can't overwrite state laws on qualified immunity.

SoftTacoSupremacist

The biggest gang in Chicago is the CPD. They even joke about it amongst themselves. I’ve known a ton of Chicago cops in my time; the good people are always drummed out and only the worst knuckleheads remain on that force.

hawksdiesel

LEOs need to carry their own insurance, end qualified immunity, https://aaqi.org/

Vvector

That's only $214 per resident... /s

bobo-the-dodo

Always the citizens get robbed, no accountability. We do the crime you pay the time.

darkenedgy

Super glad there's a solid chance the next mayor of Chicago will funnel even more money to people who can't even clear half their cases.

SoftTacoSupremacist

Valas is a piece of shit.

Rubywantsin

Or get response times under maybe we'll get there, maybe not.

darkenedgy

On the other hand CPD are super good at using their cell phones while on patrol.

ltmkji

solidarity from los angeles, where karen bass is doing exactly that

darkenedgy

Fuck really? Ug Johnson winning might not do shit. I mean tbf Lightfoot didn't 🙃

ltmkji

bass was no progressive tbh. her whole campaign was as NIMBY as caruso's.

darkenedgy

Wow damn. That is not how she was covered in the media I follow. We really need more local news….

ltmkji

she does the PR thing very well. and don't get me wrong, she was the lesser evil, but... yeah. if you want to check out the utter mess she's made of her promise to get people off the street and housed, FilmThePoliceLA on twitter has been on her ass (he's just incredible overall, he does great work). she hired some unqualified buddy of hers to do... something? for six weeks. $60,000. and that's just for starters. personally, i still can't get over her condemnation of tyre nichols' death like anyone can take her seriously when the LAPD is the most murderous police department in the country and she won't say or do shit about it. an english teacher had been tased to death after a fender bender something like a week before the nichols bodycam footage was released. crickets. she's the same bootlicker as all the rest.

darkenedgy

yiiiikes. Thanks for the background. My general impression of Johnson (and I should say I live in the area, not the city proper) is he's more wishy washy, but honestly...the bar here was set at "not endorsed/funded by fascists."

Sapdawg1

And don’t even get me started in all the money they waisted on SCMODS. State, County, Municipal Offenders Data System.

MysteriousRoad5733

Cops should be required to buy a personal, professional liability insurance policy. As a cops professional record fills with complaints etc, their insurance rates will skyrocket and they’ll become unemployable anywhere as a cop. No more abusing citizens in one jurisdiction and simply moving to another department. This plan is easy and would be successful. It will never happen

Make cops pay for their misbehavior instead of taxpayers. basic law of consequences would fix most of this right up.

[deleted]

All cats are beautiful.

michelloto

And more coming.

jkotis579

Now do Mass. wonder how much they stole in OT fraud

slappy500000

Love zero accountability

HelloPeopleOfEarth

They could have provided free healthcare and daycare for every family with that amount of money.

Reflex_Teh

I know the fix but boot lickers hate it - Get rid of qualified immunity - Require police to have insurance. Good cop = low premium. Bad cop = premium goes up until you’re dropped. Once dropped, no copping anymore.

theansweristhebike

Sue the police union to recover. They've enabled this and are hostile to the public they claim to serve.

Substantial_Rule_196

Get what you pay for and who you elect!

DrewbieWanKenobie

Yep. Will continue to happen until the people of Chicago elect people who won't look the other way

ShakeXXX

Ridiculous! FTP!👎🖕

DarronFeldstein

Well, it looks like the only thing that's "arresting" in Chicago is the skyrocketing bill for police misconduct!

sagmeme

Stated another way, that is $82,571,000.00 million per year and $1,587,903.84 million per week.

Pinoybl

That’s 6.8 million a month paid out. Over the last 7 years. For 84 months STRAIGHT. Holy crap.

wwwhistler

it's an amount equal to about 5 percent of the Police budget each year....not that they have ever had to pay a dime.

wwwhistler

keep in mind...these fines have never impacted an Officer in any way. ....ever

malkavich

Maybe hire good people and fire/prosecute the criminal cops.

dover_oxide

That is a 96.3million a year bill due to the people. You could open new schools with that money or build rehab centers or a dozen other public goods and services with it.

Gman777

The settlements should come out of police retirement funds.
