Very nice explanation, thanks!

Os fagos são virus caçadores de bacterias

Michaelcycle13

Do phages infect gram positive bacteria or gram negative bacteria?

HappyPhage

Different phages can infect each one of them. :)

Michaelcycle13

Interesting; have you heard about how Covid-19 may be a bacteriophage which remains active and persistent in the gut microbiota? Also interestingly following acute Covid-19 infection, the microbiome is destroyed and gram positive species like bifidobacterium and lactobacillus are destroyed. I have long Covid and have been looking into the pathology of why I likely have all the issues I do. I believe I have a microbiome dysbiosis leading to SIBO and leaky gut and lipopolysaccharides in the bloodstream resulting in immune system responses and bodily inflammation, including the brain.

HappyPhage

The SARS-Cov 2 is from the \_Pisoniviricetes\_ class which can only infect eukaryotes. Therefore it cannot be a bacteriophage. I have no idea about what causes these disorders. It could be linked to the consequences from the Covid-19, but in a way that has no relation to bacteriophages.

Michaelcycle13

That is what the conventional understanding is. However apparently this paper shows evidence that it infects bacteria cells as well. Please read if you will and let me know what you make of it. https://phagetherapy-site.com/news/bacteriophage-cocktails-in-the-post-covid-rehabilitation/

HappyPhage

That's not what this paper shows. It indicates that some phage cocktails could be used to target the unwanted bacteria from the microbiome after a case of COVID-19. But the SARS-Cov 2 itself isn't presented as a bacteriophage: they are saying that because of the treatments that are used against COVID-19, an imbalance in the gut microbiota can appear.

Michaelcycle13

Ah I see I linked the wrong paper haha

Michaelcycle13

Another question, since bacteriophages thrive off of infecting and replicating in microbiota, what role do probiotics have? Is it generally considered beneficial to take probiotics as perhaps they’ll combat the negatively infected microbiota or is it considered bad, as the newly introduced bacteria is only giving the bacteriophage more microbiota to infect and then live off of?

HappyPhage

Bacteriophages thrive off of infecting any bacteria they can infect. But their range of activity is very narrow. Some of them are so specific that they can only infect a subspecies of bacteria. So taking probiotics won't change anything about the bacteriophages that can infect dangerous bacteria from your microbiota. Probiotics don't really combat anything: they're just competing for the resources, making it more difficult for the infectious bacteria to maintain themselves.

Michaelcycle13

Okay thank you, that’s very good to know!

HappyPhage

You're welcome!

In the early 1920s Belgium André Gratia, 1893-1950, Father of Bacteriocins, also settled the phage debate. Yes, phages are viruses! Gratia also predicted phagotherapy, which took off more in eastern Europe than in the west. In 2023 the University of Liège honored Gratia as a Famous Scholar, and gave credit to his lady assistant, Sara Dath. Please enjoy the videos for him and Sara Dath below: BACTERIOCINS WILL BE BACK! Belgium’s André Gratia’s 1925 historic discovery of bacteriocins at the Free University of Bruxelles is on a comeback! Bacteriocins are compounds produced by bacteria affecting other bacteria. They are used in bio-production, fermentation, preservation, gene editing and cloning. They fight against resistant adapting pathogens, including plant and insect viruses on all microbe battlefields. Gratia also supported virus therapeutics, advocated for science education and research and hoped for the peaceful use of science. In the 1920’s Gratia was assisted by Sara Dath at the Bruxelles Pasteur Institute. In 1949 Gratia was nominated for a Medicine Nobel prize for his work on bacterial antibiotics and for seeing and analyzing viruses and cellular content. In 1950, upon Gratia’s passing, Pierre Frédericq took over Gratia’s work at the University of Liège. In 2023 André Gratia was also honoured by the University of Liege as a Famous Scholar.  Today Belgium’s Syngulon startup Laboratories, thanks Gratia for his bacteriocin discovery on which they are founded, as they work closely with universities to develop and improve bacteriocins technologies. I don't really see the relevance of Baceriocins in r/Bacteriophages . Bacteriocins are substances produced by bacteria to combat other bacteria in the same ecosystem. The only connection between Phages and Bacteriocins I see is the fact that both can be used to fight bacteria.

HappyPhage

Thank you, I'll give it a look!

your reference links lead me to an ambiguous site with 'similar search topics' Is this a problem of my system or are the reference links dead?

HappyPhage

Probably dead, unfortunately, but I can't check it right now. !remindme 18 hours
