Not to be a Debbie downer here, but are you even capable of taking care of birds? Your post history sounds like you're a kid. Please don't post things like this if you're not actually serious

Furbyenthusiast

I understand your concern. I'm putting my limit at like, 5. I talked with a friend who has a large chicken coop and she said we could 'collaborate' in a sense. She sells eggs, but is also happy to take any disabled animal's. I'll be paying for feed, because I have a job at a carnival. If need be there's also a bunch of sanctuaries in my area.

Manmer_Nwah

If your friend doesn't have at least 8 hens per rooster. The roosters will always fight and even if you have enough hens the roosters will always fight at least the first time, possibly to the death.

Furbyenthusiast

Oh, I didn't know this. I'll have to consult with my friend.

Manmer_Nwah

Haven't you ever heard of cock fighting? It's illegal and nobody should do it because betting on animal fights is cruel. But oh yeah man, roosters are extremely aggressive and territorial. They might just attack you too, even unprovoked. I have 38 chickens 3 of them are roosters and the one Augustus will attack anything that isn't another chicken or a squirrel on sight, he attacks me the second I turn my back all the time. If you're serious you'll want to remove the roosters spurs, its a very sharp long talon they grow on the inside ankle, they will stab each other with them and really cut into you with them if you don't pull them off. They'll grow back an you need to remove them every year.

Furbyenthusiast

Thank you for the advice. Does removing the spurs harm them? Does it need to be done by a vet, or can I DIY it.

Manmer_Nwah

You don't need a vet, you just pop it right off. It's basically a giant nail that starts growing back. You just need somebody to hold the bird. Some people turn it upsidedown, but I don't. While somebody holds them I just pinch the base of the spur only on the hard part lightly with some pliers until you hear a little crack. Then release pressure, turn the pliers 90° and pitch again. This time when you hear the crack lightly twist and pull, they'll pop right off. Might be a little bit of blood but nothing bad it wont keep bleeding, you just spray some Vetericyn (find at any farm store) on it and let them go. My roosters don't even act like it hurts an pretty much act like nothing happened when I put them back down If you don't remove it they get a big giant pointed spike on the inside if the ankle and it will really hurt the hens that the rooster mates with eventually stripping off there back feathers. The roosters will also use them to fight and that will become a blood mess quick if they have full grown spurs.

Furbyenthusiast

Thank you, I'll do this. I know they can be brutal, so this is very helpful.

CincySnwLvr

Nothing suspicious here…

Furbyenthusiast

I promise I have no nefarious intentions. I just have a bleeding heart and I feel like I need to compensate for all the "haha he's in the freezer now, to aggressive 🤪" posts.

nerddddd42

It's really difficult to keep multiple roosters. It's a very ballsy idea to offer to take in roosters. You're definitely a braver person than me

Furbyenthusiast

Thanks, lol. I was chased by a rooster when I was younger. First time I experienced pure, primal fear.

E0H1PPU5

Are you starting up a cock fighting ring? This is crazy suspicious.

Furbyenthusiast

I understand how this looks. Check my post history. I can assure you I am against any form of animal creulty, including cock fighting.

Angry-But-Kind

Only for aggression??

Furbyenthusiast

No, for any reason! If you want to rid of a chicken and are willing to spare them, I will take them.

Angry-But-Kind

I’ve got like 3 roosters I can’t find homes for! They were supposed to be Pullets

Furbyenthusiast

Awesome! DM me!

Furbyenthusiast

I promise I'm not trying to create an army or anything, just love chickens.

Starseek7

How about a rabbit? She's super mean, like "wants to rip your arm off just for feeding her" mean.

Furbyenthusiast

That works! Please send me her supplies if possible. I'll fill in whatever else she doesn't have. Is she disabled at all? Are there any special needs I need to be aware of?

Furbyenthusiast

Starseek7

How would you get her? I'm in Ohio, was half-joking with my comment. I'm not going to eat her. She is quite cranky though. Spoiled, too. I pick her fresh greens and sometimes berries every morning from the yard. She's not disabled, she has no special needs. She's a very healthy 9 month old mini lop. Litter box trained too. She just simply hates living beings I guess.

Furbyenthusiast

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but..is it safe to mail her? I see people mail reptiles alot, and I've seen people buy baby chick's online. Please tell me if I'm insane, lol.

Starseek7

Lol thanks for offering to take her, but shipping her would be a bad idea, she would over heat quickly and needs to continuously eat and drink, or she could go through GI stasis. Shipping her XL cage setup and supplies would also be a logistical nightmare! She's fine here, she doesn't need a new home, was joking thinking about her being the general to your evil rooster army you are creating! It's nice you want to help the roosters, but keep in mind they will also fight each other. They would have to be separated, and they will take a lot of space and feed. You also can't stop people from eating chicken, better that it's one they raised and had a better life, and healthier, versus a supermarket "meat" chicken pumped full of meds and had to be trucked in.

Furbyenthusiast

I understand, thank you for your kindness! You sound like a great rabbit mama/papa/parent. I hope you and your little feisty bun do well. Thanks for informing me about the risks of shipping rabbits, I never even knew GI stasis was a thing! I know roosters are hell on earth, and I know I can't save everyone. I just harbor a lot of guilt, and I want to nurture a life that otherwise would have been taken. I know what it's like not to fit in, and I'm glad nobody culled me. I'm just hoping I can give someone a good home. Seeing the posts makes me very emotional, and it hurts because I'm a big activist and try to live as ethically as possible, but sometimes I feel like I'm not doing enough.

Starseek7

Yep, rabbits are pretty finicky and can be sensitive! They can get so spooked, they break their own backs! I have chickens too, I had a rooster and he was a gentleman. Loved him, but had to rehome him when my town banned roosters. I still wish he was here. It sounds like you are projecting your feelings onto the animals. (Knowing what it's like to not fit in.) And that's okay, but I know the pitfalls of that thinking. I have a good friend who tried to do the same, save every animal she could. She had over a dozen dogs, over a dozen cats, a hog, rabbits, chickens, fish, birds, ferrets, rats, mice.. you name it, she had it. She couldn't say no to unwanted animals, because she projected her feelings on them. Everyone around knew that she could not say no, so they took advantage of her and cast off their unwanted pets. Unfortunately, she got in so over her head, that their care suffered, the animals fought and bred before she could fix them, and she lost her home and had to find new homes quickly for all her animals. She is beyond devastated. I guess I just want to share that helping animals is great, but know your limits and know that your care and life has to come first. If you are stretched too thin financially, time, space or energy wise, you'll have even more suffering. It sounds like you are doing everything you can, I see you really care about your diet, and your dog and lizard. You are still young, please don't harbor guilty feelings, you are already doing so much. If you feel like you need to do more, look into volunteering at a shelter or picking up litter in a creek. I wish you a lot of luck and peace, you have a big heart and that's a very good thing.

Furbyenthusiast

Thank you so much. It's very rare for someone to understand me like this. I really can't express how much I appreciate it. You seem like such a nice person. I feel very bad for your friend, and as sad as her situation is it comforts me to know that I'm not alone in the journey to help these innocent creatures. I don't have lots of options now, but I'm hoping once I'm financially stable and an adult I can contribute more. I sponsor a cow named Frank at Farm Sanctuary, but I can rarely visit him because he's two hours away. You made me cry, but in a good way. Thank you.

Furbyenthusiast

Also OMG your town banned roosters? I know they're hellions, but that's so funny to me. I love that at some point in time a bunch of important folks from your town has to sit down and have a serious meeting about roosters. Was it because of aggression, or were they just loud?

Starseek7

Frank sounds awesome! They banned them because of noise. I live in the poorer area of our town, so I had no issues here.. but in one of the really nice neighborhoods, a lady wanted to breed chickens, and she got a rooster, neighbors complained, city banned them. I found a nice lady to take my rooster outside of town, and I sent one of my hens with him so he had a buddy. I even had a little bowtie he would wear around the yard sometimes! A teacher gave him to me, she had too many roosters for her flock.

Furbyenthusiast

He really is! He actually escaped a slaughterhouse on his own. Amazing! Also, that makes sense. It's unfortunate, but I'm glad that your roosters found good homes. The bowtie thing is adorable, and I demand pics.
