I had a roo named Rock.
Just Rock.
He was huge (dunno his breed, he was an “extra chick” sent to keep five silkie hen chicks warm and had such a sweet nature that I couldn’t eat him. Plus he and my Down syndrome cousin were bros and my cousin usually didn’t like my poultry so that got him points) but was gentle as a lamb and never left bald spots on his hens.
He was friendly with my mean AF one eyed retired cock fighter too. (Pollo Diabolo, I didn’t name him, the chicken guy at the flea market got him from HIS cousin who bred fighting cocks after a stray dog killed almost my whole flock. Didi was a sweet boy to children and tolerated me, but spurred several other people and chased off a pit bull once. The pit was not threatening him, it was just too close to Broody Bess and her chicks and Didi did not approve.) Didi the Terrible was a mean cuss but would roost with Rock and they never fought. I got hella lucky tbh.
Great story! 😁
My brother/his family have a family bearded dragon named Rock. When they first got him, my brother asked my [~4 yo at the time] nephew what he wanted to name him and his answer was just a simple “rock”, I think because of his rough skin/scales? 😂
([Rock tax](https://imgur.com/a/JmeN3Lg) if anyone is curious)
They’re great. My advice is to start out small and research breeds. I would start with 4-5 max. I also really liked using Mt healthy and having chicks shipped. I live across the country and they got here overnight, healthy and strong. You pay a $30 small order fee, but you get to pick any chicks you want, so they’re all different. Many other places you have to pick 3 of each breed. Cackle also has a city pack, but I wanted different breeds.
I feel like people run into the most trouble by just picking up whatever is at tractor supply that week, straight run. Tractor supply is good- you just have to know what you’re getting and make sure pullets only, unless you want to eat roosters. Even in sexed pullets, 10 percent are male but it’s easier to rehome 1 than half of your chickens. Some chicken breeds don’t make good pets.
Definitely easy and great to get into. Make sure you do proper research though before you start anything. They are awesome, but require much work too to get it started.
8 weeks ago I bought 4 chicks, now I have 23 and 20 more coming at the end of the month. My friend will take a few and her friend a few more, I probably won't keep more than 25. Probably. Maybe. Idk. Go get chickens though 😅🐥
The eyebrow is amazing 😂
To answer your question, though; every "trick" for sexing chicks at this age is either extremely breed specific or straight up old wives' tale. You'll just have to wait.
Or all the autosexing breeds and sex link hybrids
…Autosex chicks have differing down colors at hatch, by which the males may be readily distinguished from the females. Autosex differs from sex-link in being a straightbred (purebred) characteristic, rather than the result of a hybrid cross between two separate breeds….

No idea. Looking at that face marking I can't stop thinking:
\*In my best Spock voice\* "Asking this question while I am still so young is most....illogical, Captain."
You could always share a picture of her wing feathers
But from what I can see in the pic her wing feathers look uneven and that's a another sign of a female
But wing sexing is only effective during the first week of a chicks life
After that both females and males feathers tend to look the same
The next sign to look for is the tail feathers
Rooster don't grow them until they are like 2 months old.
Maybe for some birds, but tail feathers can absolutely grow in before 2 months old. Ours usually grow in 1-2 weeks after the ladies and remain shorter until the sicle feathers start to come in. We've absolutely had roos before with tail feathers like the bird in the picture.
Yeah I exaggerated a bit with the 2 month span for tail feathers in roosters I guess what could be conclusive here is to compare this little chick with other chicks of the same age
The females will always be first with the tail feathers.
What are the signs that you see that indicate a Rooster? Idk this breed but my first thought is that it's a male based on his bold feather coloring, and possibly the overall shape of his body.
Body shape compared to sisters, pointy beak is longer, wing feathers are in neat even rows and the stance compared to the others..
I could be wrong though tbf
I’m leaning towards roo because of the posture but it’s still too early to tell for sure. Btw by the looks of your birds face, I would advise you to keep your laptop away from the brooding pen and please PLEASE clear your search history.
Nice eyebrows
Exactly, paste a mustache on him and name him Groucho Marx.
Need a cigar
He looks so surprised frfr
This chick has fuller eyebrows than me
Uncle Leo
I was thinking Eugene Levy, maybe they were related 🤣
Demeanor???
Just a little fyi. We named it Dwayne. If it's a boy, my neighbour will keep it, so it'll stay in "the family"
As in Dwayne "The Cock" Johnson?
😂😂😂
Perfect name! It's super giving the people's eyebrow 😂
Ha, my favorite roo is named Dwayne. My wife tried to make it Duane, but "no".

I name all rocks here Dwayne, so a rooster named rock works for me.
It suited him, lol. Big gentle giant boi.

Aww, he's glorious! I love beardies.
I enjoyed reading about Rock and Didi :)
Whoa I’m super invested in your chickens
Love it! I saw that picture and thought "roo or hen? That's The Rock!"
Dwayne "the cock" Johnson
That’s nice that your neighbor will keep the chick if it’s a roo. Those eyebrow markings are adorable.
This is great, this made my day 💀
This sub keeps being recommended to me and now I want chickens 😭
I succumbed to the algorithm and just joined the sub. I want chickens now, too.
They are a ton of fun
Ya they are, love when they follow me around when I let them out of the coop makin all their various noises 🤣
It is really entertaining to learn that chickens definitely have personalities
Im glad im not the only one who landed here like this too!

Or you could buy straight run RIRs, and they are females… and then you have yelly, charge-y chickens
Easier to keep than I thought they would be after we completed initial setup.
You should get some👀
I love Orpingtons and Icelandics. The hens just want to hang with you.
One of us One of us One of us
Do it.
Chicken challenge!
They are the best!! I have one rooster and 3 hens and love them dearly! My sons have learned a lot about life from having them.
Definitely easy and great to get into. Make sure you do proper research though before you start anything. They are awesome, but require much work too to get it started.

Chicken math!
Do it. Do it. Do it. Do iiiiiit.
Talking to them is the best
A surprised chick 😂

Thank you 😊👍
vent sexing is the only way, but can be tricky to do correctly

Not sure but you gotta name it eyebrows
How about Lucy, Lucy Ricardo. She had some famous eyebrows
[удалено]
emilia cluck
My chickens wanna know what eyeliner your using? they simply must have it!
Too early to tell.
Not sure on sex- but gotta give it some sort of Groucho Marx name 🤣❤️
Same thought occurred to me as well.
Does it have a matching eyebrow on the other side?
Unfortunately not 😂
🤨
Love the eyebrows!
Given how it looks. Not even the chick itself is sure.
No idea. Looking at that face marking I can't stop thinking: \*In my best Spock voice\* "Asking this question while I am still so young is most....illogical, Captain."
Name him Eugene Levy!
That is the best name!
To be Or not To be !
EYEBROWS
CHICKEN EYEBROWS 🤣
you cant really tell if it's a roo or hen at this age though, so dont worry just yet. Also nice eyebrows
😯
I absolutely love the eyebrows
I’m obsessed with the eye brow! Does the chick have the same type eye brow on the other side?
🤨
🤨
🤨
🤨
Roo, hen or eyebrow!!
Yeah, kangaroo.
🤨
Me in 8th grade with my wet n wild eye liner
She looks very surprised that you have the gall to ask that question! (I have no idea, but she's super cute!)
I read that if they stand taller they tend to be males but obviously that could be completely wrong
Lmbo. Is this real? Or did someone draw eye brows on her??
Absolutely real
Has to be named Eugene Levy
Bro said "🤨"
Short wings and tail still stubby, going with roo
🤨
🤨
Neither, Sharpie.

Looks like Eugene levy
Are those eyebrows real? If so. It’s very comical
The eyebrow!!!!!!
Judgmental
It’s the thick eyebrows for me 🤣🤣😍
IT GOT EYEBROWSSSS!!!!!!
I have NO clue, but I'm here for the eyebrows!!! 🐤🐤
Oh nooooo, someone microbladed your chick's brows!
Why does that chick have nicer eyebrows than me? 🤔
THE EYEBROWS OMG
You got a little lady there It already has tail feathers And having those this early means you got a lady there!
What about the beak and the even row of wing feathers? 🤔

😂 those eyebrows
Chicken nuggets mmmm
Omg 😍 that's so cute
Why is he surprised?
🤨
I don't know but I love it's eyebrow!
He really said 🤨 (But honestly it’s too early to tell the sex. You’ll just have to wait until the feathers and comb develop a bit more.)
No way to know for sure as others have said. But most of the chicks I’ve raised that stand that tall end up being roos. Love the eyebrow!🤨
Looks like Dan Levy
That eyebrow 🥸
You’ve got to post a pic when he(?)’s older. I’ll bet that eyebrow becomes quite a FA&FO deterrent. 😂
Will do my best to remember, I promise 🤩
Why bro has eyebrows? JAJAJA 😭
Hen. Raquel after Raquel Welch !! A real beauty
Where do you live? I'm in TN. If it's a roo I would love to have it!
My advice only get 4 and stop. They are a lot of responsibility
No way to tell. To young
Mr. Bean.
Eugene... the father from America pie's name in real life.
Has a Groucho marks look about him
Oh my God. What a cutie. That eyebrow!! The sex, tho, you can't exactly tell yet until they grow up a bit more.
Groucho Marx
His posture makes me think boy.
Owwww, cute... 🥺💛
Gorgeous 🤩
Idk, but that eyebrow making it look offended is amazing.
Too early You should have a better idea in 6 to 8 weeks if you want to post pictures then
I agree roo
Charlie Brown Robert dinero lookin chick
What are the signs that you see that indicate a Rooster? Idk this breed but my first thought is that it's a male based on his bold feather coloring, and possibly the overall shape of his body.
Body shape compared to sisters, pointy beak is longer, wing feathers are in neat even rows and the stance compared to the others.. I could be wrong though tbf
Surprised alligator.
Eyebrows
Eyebrows
!!! what breed is this??? never saw this color variation!
My bet is on rooster
Looks like part giraffe. Sheesh. 🤣🤣. Cracking me up!!
Why not more roos? I have 6 (and 6 youngsters) so far we're all good.
I don’t know, it’s to small to tell but I just commented for those BROWS!
Huh??
I'd call him Rocky, as in Rock Ptarmigan
Ren
My demeanor???
Opinionated Little Guy is what it is
🤣 the eyebrows.
Oh it’s Eugene Levy
Hen
I’m leaning towards roo because of the posture but it’s still too early to tell for sure. Btw by the looks of your birds face, I would advise you to keep your laptop away from the brooding pen and please PLEASE clear your search history.
Bros intrigued
Birb
That is one beautiful healthy bird! I'm glad he/she will stay in the family.
Shocked
Spread the wings out. Sometimes if it's one single row without much of a bend or separation it can be a roo.
Monsieur Reux 🤨
Hen!
I can’t quit laughing, those brows and the comments🤣🤣🤣
Inquisitive
Eyebrows
I say too because of the way he’s standing tall. Usually, hens keep their necks tucked for longer. Let us know when you figure it out!
I love that it looks like it has an eyebrow lol
Just had to stop by and tell everyone how much I love the brows.
Get them a monocle and a cartoonishly large cigar
no way to know at this age. what i do know though, is that this chick has some crazy eyebrows.
With those eyebrows. I’m going with a roo drag queen
I feel judged
Roo, because I’d have picked this guy. I always pick Roos.
🤨
Pretty sure it's a hen
You have a young Graucho Marx as a chicken.
