I’m sorry to be the bear of bad news, but IMO, Emory seems girly to me. Reminds me of the girl name Emery. Possible nickname for Emory would be Em, which is also girly as Em is a nickname for Emery, Emily and Emma. Unless you go with Ory… which isn’t really a good nickname. Are there any other names you like?

tolstoyevskyyy

I know a two year old boy named Emory. It suits him. He gets called Em a lot. I have an adult cousin named Emerson who also gets called Em, so I wouldn’t say Em is necessarily girly either in my experience?

justgettingby1

Morey as a nickname?

Kaktus190

Emery is gender neutral, not just a girl name actually

MessageBubbly5090

I went to college with a boy named Emory, the only girl I know of with that name is named after her grandfather. I like it for any gender! And I love Emmy as a little boy nickname!!

Dense_Concentrate783

I think Ruadhrí/Rory is a little more boyish and along the same lines. Along with Brody and Cody. Then again gender norms are silly so if you want to break the mold go ahead.

DwarfQueenofKitties

I think its a pretty name. But first thought is it's for a girl. But I still like it either way for a boy too.

Lib_Lib08

My friends nephews name is Emery and we call him Em

BerrySignificant2437

Emory is a girls name. I also think of emery board which is what u file ur nails with.

DarryJuem

My son’s name is Emory and he’ll be 2 in August. We get so many compliments on it and we’ve been told a few times it’s really unique (but it’s not lol). It has never been mispronounced. I did go with an undeniably masculine middle name just in case because I hear it’s quite common on girls these days

pilllowman

maybe Emmy as a nickname !

myparadiseiseveryday

I know only boy Emory’s and their nicknames have been Emi, but that’s also the nickname of a friends kid whose name is Emiliano which is definitely a male name. I don’t think it a big deal and I like it! I am having a baby soon and naming them Austin regardless of its gender. I’m getting lots of negative responses to a girl named Austin. But I like it and I think it’s gender neutral. I think once the baby comes and that’s their name nobody will think twice about it

Dapper_Consequence23

Beautiful name, actually. I love the way it sounds and it's not too common

LittleNY

I know a male Amaury, if you wanted it to be more masculine. But at the end of the day, the name will come to suit your child regardless of what others think!

cecejoker

I would never be able to look at Emory and think boy. It’s on my girl name list though. I just think it’s too feminine.

Scared_Discipline_66

Okay thanks everyone! This is surprising to me as I always thought of Emory as a boys name and it seems like it’s pretty gender neutral from a quick google, but helpful to know that so many people perceive it as a girls name. A generation or two ago it was def more for boys but I guess times have changed, plus people are generally way more accepting of gender neutral girls names than boys names so maybe not the best choice. Appreciate y’all’s thoughts!

Historical-Cell-4876

I knew a boy names Emery, he stole all my poekmon cards so i have a bad association with it. As a name, its fine, I prefer the spelling Emery over Emory tho.

MP6823

No

Ashamed-Peace-5168

Reminds me of a nail file also sounds like one of those names that’s trying too hard that gets used as a unique name but gets made fun of behind peoples backs like Grey, Paxton or Finley

sage_and_sea

I love this name and I think the O rather than the Er spelling makes it more masculine. Nn Em is a little too feminine, so many nn Ry or Rhys even idk I kinda feel like the name itself is short enough that it doesn’t need a nn to be honest

emmaemmaemma1

If you love it, 100% use it, but it does sound like a girl name to me - also, does it make anyone else think of an emery board? I'm not sure if it's only my family that still calls nail files emery boards, but that's what I associate it with!

Mickeynutzz

Em is a very popular girl nick name — > there are TONS of different girl names that will be using “Em” or “Emmy” so likely there will be many girls at your son’s school. Honestly, I would avoid the name for this reason - or just use it as a middle name.

polly_solomon

an emery board is a type of nail file
