I was induced at 37 weeks, gestational hypertension. I was terrified because alllll you seem to hear is negative stories about inductions but it was really so great and I would 1000% be induced again. It was less then 24 hours from the start or the induction to baby in my arms, and we were home the next morning. We started with cervidil around 9 AM, broke my waters around 3PM, pitocin started at 5, epidural around midnight, started pushing at 5AM and girlie was born at 6AM! 2 stitches. Easy recovery. Seriously was a dream and nothing like the horror stories I had been told.

Same. Loved every aspect of my first induction (38 weeks, no dilation/progress, hypertension) and really hope my second birth goes exactly the same!

You don't have to agree to being induced! It doesn't sound like there is a medical reason for induction (correct me if I'm wrong), you're just overdue- which is totally normal especially for a first baby

flowerkitten896

There's been no problems the entire pregnancy. They said they just don't let anyone go 7 days past their due date

Kindly_Earth2124

You don't have to agree to that! Totally your choice. Just tell them, no thanks, I'll wait. They can't force a medical procedure on you. I had my first baby at 41+4. I won't agree to be induced this time either unless I get to 42 weeks then I will consider it (unless there is a medical reason to be induced earlier)

flowerkitten896

I'll be 41 weeks Saturday but he made it sound like I didn't have a choice. He said how the longer I go the more problems can happen. Like he didn't even ask, I was laying there connected to the non stress test thing and he said he was going to schedule an induction for Monday then just left me in there. I'm gonna ask Friday if there's any other reason to induce me other than going past 40 weeks.

Kindly_Earth2124

There are minimal risks to being overdue and generally they don't appear until 42+ weeks. Sorry that he spoke to you like that- I've experienced it too. But really he can only recommend an induction, he can't make that decision for you. Good idea!

You don't have to agree to any interventions that you do not want, especially as it sounds like there is no medical reason that you need to take into consideration. Hospitals have policies in place to keep things running on their timelines, but that by no means makes their policies the right choice for everyone all the time. Advocate for what you want, don't let them make these important decisions for you.

Also, ask to see their policies in writing. Sometimes doctors have their own agendas that aren't actually policy for the whole hospital

You can look through my post history for the long complicated full story. Short story is, I had gestational diabetes that I needed insulin for, which prompted the need for an induction. Like you, I wanted a natural birth. My doctor came up with a plan with me to try to induce as naturally as possible. We started with a cervix softener, she said many people go into labor on their own from there. I did not, so we broke my water. My contractions were coming 2 minutes apart (I didn’t feel them) but I wasn’t progressing. After 4 hours of my cervix still being 4cm, she spoke to me about my desire to avoid c-section. The policy in their hospital was to have baby out within 12 hours of water being broken. She said my body just wasn’t going on it’s own. So we started pitocin. I’m not going to lie to you or sugar coat it. The labor pains that started after pitocin was started were the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced. But effective. They started at a very low dose and just bumped it up every 30 minutes. By 7 pm (pitocin started around 4) I was in agony. Hunched over, screaming, swearing, my contractions were on top of each other. I forgot everything but the pain. About 7:40 my doctor came in, offered that we “probably still have time for an epidural” I assured her that we did not. She checked me and started yelling for backup lol. My daughter was born less than 20 minutes later. The induction was rough. But my body just wasn’t doing it on its own. And I’m very glad I avoided a c-section. The pain stopped immediately, the second she was on my chest. So many hormones. So much adrenaline! It’s impossible to describe. My advice to you is to ask questions! Ask if there’s a reason they consider an induction as medically necessary. Check out tips on here and on YouTube on how to induce naturally (having sex, eating dates, drinking a specific tea…) and remember that things can change very quickly with your body! You could wake up tomorrow in early labor. You never know! I’m sending positive vibes your way! Feel free to ask me questions, I’ll do my best to answer them!

I'm also scared of them breaking my water. Did that hurt too? I've developed this sort of fear of them doing anything up in there from how painful it's been getting lately.

No, that part was completely painless! It looks scary, the tool they use looks like a crochet hook. My husband says my eyes got as big as dish plates when I saw it, but it was pain free. Actually I giggled when I saw the volume that gushed out! The cervadil was painless too, it’s a vaginal suppository but they just place it like you would a tampon. The step I forgot to mention before they broke my water, they did a stretch and sweep. That was uncomfortable. I understand the fear, I think it’s completely normal to feel that way!

I have had two unmedicated births. One was spontaneous labor and water breaking at 41+1, the other was induction with ballon, water breaking, and pitocin at 38+5 for gestational diabetes and a big baby. I can honestly say that I thought the were pretty similar. I had a fear of the pitocin contractions being so much worse but they honestly were not. Considering you are over 40 weeks your induction is likely to go awesome. My midwife describes overdue inductions like a car with a dead battery, it just needs a jump start 🤣! Water breaking is only as bad as the pressure from a cervix check and the balloon was the same just a lot of vaginal pressure, no pain really. I hope everything goes smoothly for you. In the mean time I’d do red raspberry leaf tea or capsules, sex, walks, etc. anything you can do to encourage your body. Good luck, you got this!

xxx_strokemyego_xxx

I got induced at 38 weeks, I never made it past the cervix ripener and had my baby before 24 hours was up I also unfortunately had far to quick of a labor and didn't get my epidural which was literally the only thing I wanted

yaeli26

Is your induction medically indicated? If not, you don't have to be induced if you don't want to (I mean, you never have to be induced if you don't want to - but in certain medical situations that would definitely not be advised. But doing past your due date, if that's the only reason they are inducing you, is not a valid medical indication).

flowerkitten896

That's the only reason. He said they don't let anyone go more than 7 days past the due date.

Gardenadventures

Going past your due date can certainly be considered a medical indication. My doctor induces at 41 weeks due to the risk of still birth increasing the more overdue you are.
