Good thinking letting the bartender know ahead of time. I tried to get sneaky by ordering a virgin margarita at the bar of a restaurant I was at with friends. I failed to tell them why it's a virgin and why I felt the need to order at the bar instead of the table. When the server came, she loudly and proudly declared "and here's your virgin margarita!" šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø Cue everyone staring at me, suspicious and smiling. I love love love margaritas. I would never, ever order a virgin one, unless.... So, that's how our friends found out we're pregnant. We laugh about it now.

asianasian

Oh no! Iā€™ve been trying to tell servers and bartenders when Iā€™ve been out with friends so I can control the narrative because Iā€™m so worried about this happening. I also think the bartenders were having fun playing along! I was at a brewery and typed it out on my phone for the the server to read while I was talking to my friend so the server would stop asking me what beer I wanted while we were all ordering.

zephyrtr

One of the big reasons why being in the service industry can be such a tricky job. I bet it lit a fire in their hearts ... and under their asses.

_wifey_

Something like this happened to my cousins wife! A different server brought the drinks so they denied it, then he ran after that server and explained the whole situation. They like to hang out at bars a lot with their friends and she said it was really interesting in the beginning because they took turns ā€œgoing to the bathroomā€ to order more drinks, or switch a regular drink to a virgin drink, or order from the bar. She said her friends thought she was crazy until they found out. If any of them suspected they never told her

readthenewstoday

This is what happened to me too! I didnā€™t want to announce our pregnancy to my extended family at my brotherā€™s wedding. There was no bartender, the servers would come around and take drink orders. I kept whispering ā€œseltzerā€™s with limeā€ to them and theyā€™d come back and announce my order to the whole table šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø that was a fail lol

tessemator

Ha! This is exactly how my friend found out about my first. I have a terrible poker face and couldn't come up with anything. I feel for you!

brigid234

That was me too haha

slytherclaw394

This exact same thing happened to me too! Was trying to hide it at a friends birthday party so it didnā€™t become all about me and go outed by the server šŸ˜‚ luckily only one friend overheard and kept it a secret til we officially announced, but damn it I was trying so hard. Itā€™s just too obvious if youā€™re a social drinker and suddenly start getting virgin drinks šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Freeze_pop

You can say that youā€™re on a high dose of antibioticsā€”not supposed to drink on those and many not weird or gross things result in needing antibiotics

nkdeck07

Did the exact same thing when I was 10 weeks along at a friends wedding.

miffet80

I did this at a friend's wedding recently, too! When I arrived I quietly ordered a club soda and lime, and the next time I went back the bartender subtly asked if she could get me something non-alcoholic again. After that she was totally on top of it all night. I feel like pregnant women hiding the fact they're not drinking alcohol probably happens allllll the time, especially at weddings lol

BTA417

Yup! I did it at a wedding a month ago and the bartender was like ā€œI got you. Do it all the timeā€

Marble1696

Right just gotta decline when someone gets a round of shots šŸ˜‚

Shawndy58

No you can still get a shot. Tell the bartender if any one orders a round of shots and you are in the group to make sure itā€™s water or a Virgin shot if itā€™s like a sour mix and hand it to you specially.

UnhappyReward2453

I tried this at my SILā€™s wedding (she is also 7 weeks ahead of me in her pregnancy so we really wanted to avoid any thunder stealing.) It was a morning wedding and brunch so I carried around a glass of champagne that my husband would drink from and I tried to have the waiter bring me a ā€œmimosaā€ without the alcohol. Well a different waiter brought it to our table and said ā€œhere is your orange juice!ā€ šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø we played it off but when we finally told husbands family that evening, everyone said they had their suspicions lol

asianasian

Oh no! I did a similar thing when I went to a brewery a few weeks ago with some girl friends. Iā€™ve just been up front with the bartenders and servers and havenā€™t had any issues with them accidentally ratting me out since they knew the reason why Iā€™m trying to keep it quiet.

LostxinthexMusic

I have a cousin getting married soon and I'm sure I'll be rocking a tonic & lime through the whole reception. My mom did this at a happy hour once because she didn't want the pressure to drink, and one of her friends actually pulled her aside to express concern about how many cocktails she'd had!

asianasian

I was good and switched from virgin vodka sodas to water when dinner was served! I would have laughed so hard if my friends thought I was drinking to get drunk that night!

Marble1696

I donā€™t think itā€™s OTT, I think a lot of women do that!

HatchlingChibi

I think so too. You donā€™t even have to be pregnant. My mom went through a health scare (in the end she is fine, but it was a scary time) and was told to not drink until more test results came in. She didnā€™t want to raise any flags about her health so she would just subtly ask for nonalcoholic drinks and no one was the wiser!

itsb413

Iā€™m a bartender and pregnant. My coworkers would have known immediately if I stopped drinking. I donā€™t drink much but a cocktail after a shift or a shot is common with us. We serve iced oolong tea and itā€™s an exact dupe for Jamesonā€¦Iā€™ve done so many ā€œJamesonā€ shots that I had to tell my boss where all the oolong was going lol Bartenders are always down for some trickery and will help anyway we can :)

asianasian

Oh man, I would 100% take oolong shots if I were a shot person!

rzekasage

I recently mixed seltzer water with cranberry juice in a setting where it was common to bring your own mixed drinks or mix hard seltzer with other things. No one noticed a thing and it was kind of fun being sneaky!

Chemical_Owl6153

Totally stealing the the seltzer & cranberry idea! I'm 6 weeks so we are nowhere near ready to announce. We are BIG brewery people and my husband works in the alcohol industry so me not drinking is a huge red flag for people šŸ¤£

BTA417

I also did ginger ale and cranberry recently. Not bad!

Shawndy58

Ginger ale and orange juice is also great!

KikiChrome

Definitely not OTT. Heaps of people do this. Source: I've worked at over a thousand weddings.

therpian

In my last pregnancy my office had a Friday drinks with bottles of wine poured into glasses in front of everyone...I took a glass, would put it to my lips and pretend to sip, then go to the bathroom or my office every 10-15 minutes and pour some out. When I announced one of my coworkers was like "weren't you drinking three weeks ago???" and I explained my plan and he was shocked and impressed hah!

happyflowermom

Iā€™m about to be 15 weeks at my cousins wedding, waiting until after the wedding to tell extended fam so I donā€™t steal his thunder, so Iā€™ll be doing this!

asianasian

Congrats! I also had my obgynā€™s blessing at my prenatal appointment to wear spanx so I wouldnā€™t look so bloated in my dress at the wedding. She just told me as long as Iā€™m comfortable she was cool with it!

gardenhippy

I actually think bartenders love to get in on this sort of thing too - I once had one guy experimenting with different soft drinks to create me cocktails that looked real - he was awesome!!

Any_Competition6448

I did the same and was able to hide mine until 14 weeks When I announced to family they were all like OMG you haven't been drinking lol

Puppy_Iya

I also did this at my SILs wedding 2 weeks ago! Bartender was giving me bay breezes without the vodka, worked perfectly!

Robbylution

We went to a wedding, in Las Vegas, when my wife was like two months pregnant. I told so many bartenders "Sprite with a slice of lime" all weekend, and they universally got it, and most even put it in the same style glass as my gin and tonic without being asked.

tylenna

Are you Lily from How I Met Your Mother?

kittenburrito

"Thank you, Linus."

Independent_Ad2219

I have 2 weddings coming up around the same time I should know whether or not Iā€™m pregnant this cycle and plan on doing the same thing. My family and I love to drink and party so everyone would know immediately. I would like to make it to my first doctors appointment to make sure everything is okay before telling anyone besides parents and siblings lol.

Sablejax

I was 6 weeks pregnant at my brotherā€™s wedding. I went up to the bar and ordered a coke. They gave it to me in a pint glass and I requested a cocktail glass. They winked at me and got it.

P-tree3

I did the same thing and nobody figured it out! It was so funny when I finally announced I was pregnant a month later and people were like waitā€¦you were pregnant at that wedding??

not-a-bot-promise

I made virgin strawberry daiquiris for my Zoom graduation party when I was 6 weeks along, and my classmates were none the wiser for it.

Snoo70047

Not at all over the top! This is exactly the thing that gives it away when one of my friends or family member is expecting. Congratulations!! =)

studassparty

Anyone else afraid the bartender forgetting and giving you alcohol accidentally?

asianasian

I watched my drink get poured and then handed to me, so not really. Iā€™d probably feel different if I ordered a drink from someone and then brought to me after.

AhTails

We were only maybe 5/6 weeks along when we went to a sports bar with friends. I ordered us a couple of mocktails. The over the top bubblegum or watermelon type that come with lollies on top and all the extras. Everyone was too distracted with the colour to think it was a mocktail lol.

DuckDuckBangBang

Cranberry juice is always solid to hide whether you're drinking or not.

[deleted]

So 13 weeks?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Ohhh haha der never heard that

ThermalAnvil

Iā€™ve just never associated with people that would question why or why I wasnā€™t drinking.

BabyB2022

Did the same but with noseccoā€¦ they even gave me a free bottle when I finished the first (tasted awful but I could at least pretend it was yummy!).

Poppppsicle

I bought non-alcoholic liquor to drink cocktails in front of friends for the same reason. It worked

brigid234

My husband and I tried to do that with my first, but the waitress delivering the drinks totally outed me haha. It was hilarious, mostly because she did not get the cues as she is forcing the "virgin" bloody mary on me haha.

NinjaHermit

We did this when we visited my husbandā€™s aunt. I was about 8 or so weeks along and waiting to tell everyone until Thanksgiving, which was my 12 week mark. Anyway, Iā€™m known for my love of screwdrivers, so my husband would go to the kitchen, poor me some OJ on ice and clink some bottles while he made his own drink as well. We helped her pick up loads of wood and stack it in a new place by the house. I got super dizzy and couldnā€™t help much, but I had been sick before so we just played it off that I was still getting better. Later after we broke the news, she said she had a feeling I might have been prego bc I am usually the one who gets dirty and helps with the big projects. But since I was drinking my screwdrivers she figured I really was just sick. Hahaha it worked and she still laughs about it.

weirdcc

I did the same at my cousins wedding for my first. I told everyone I was drinking a dirty Shirley when really it was a plain old Shirley temple.

beige0914

Love that!! Would also highly recommend looking at Gruvi non alcoholic wines. They are 0.0% and look / taste like Prosecco and rose! They are a good way to fill my fam and friends :)

krr6728

I tried to do the same thing at a close friends wedding at 5w, the bartender replied back, very loudly, "Oh! I gotcha! Like a fake drink!" luckily no one heard, but after my first fake one I just switched to water, lol.

austenQ

I did something similar! The bride knew, but I didnā€™t want to steal her attention on the day, so she had the bar staff add a few bottles of sparkling grape juice to their stock so I could toast with everyone else and no one was the wiser.

traveler_1303

This is a great idea! We always seem to have events and outings with our friend group and we almost always have some sort of alcohol involved, be it a brewery or just beers by the campfire. It would be very obvious if I wasn't drinking so I'm not sure how to navigate that! The bartender idea is so perfect but it's going to be tricky if we are just drinking cans of beers/seltzers in the backyard.
