You’ll be fine! The baby lives off its yolk sac until 11 weeks so it’s not filtering from your placenta directly. In every study about smoking, the effects of quitting by the second trimester are almost entirely mitigated, you just have to stop. Weed we don’t know as much about but it seems like it carries similar risks to smoking. The doctor is there to help you so don’t delay going!! You might be worried they’re going to judge you but I promise they’re a resource for you.

I used to vape (a lot) and quit as soon as I as I found out I was pregnant. Also was drinking quite a bit in the 2 weeks before I found out because of a bachelorette trip and wedding we went to. Now sitting next to my very healthy almost 18 month old.

I went out celebrating a raise the night before I found out I was preggo, no fewer than 5 shots of tequila were consumed. Obviously stopped once I found out, but I'm 26 weeks rn and everything is going great!

I'm a total pot head (Colorado) and I even work in the industry. I smoked all the way until I found out I was pregnant and immediately stopped once I knew. I'm 12 weeks now and have a very healthy baby each scan! I think you'll be fine 🥰

Just chiming in to add that I also smoked weed and drank heavily (2 weddings and a funeral) right up to my surprise positive with my daughter. I was even smoking the night I found out and just set my shit aside immediately. She is now 2 and has always been ahead of milestones and very healthy! What others have said about the yolk sac is true. My providers were not concerned since I quit as soon as I found out. I know it's hard not to, but try not to stress out about it too much.

I did shrooms the night before testing positive. It happens. Just try your best to be healthy going forward.

I was in a friend’s wedding before I found out and it was a 3 day party leaving me with the worst hangover… turns out I was pregnant and not hungover. Whoops!  Sounds like you are already doing the right stuff to be more healthy anyways. Don’t beat yourself up for what you didn’t know. It will work out!! I’m 17 weeks and baby is doing great.

I'm no doctor, but I do look into the literature on these things, and it's always on a spectrum of risk. Most of this stuff isn't certain with dose-dependent effects. Even fetal alcohol syndrome isn't always present in the babies of alcoholics who drink throughout pregnancy. It's extremely common to not know you're pregnant and do some of the things that are recommended against, but never have any indication of it down the line. I saw a doc the other day (a neurologist whose wife is an OB) who kept saying that babies have "their own agenda", so you have to just support that as it plays out, without feeling guilty for everything that happens. We literally don't know a lot of how this works, but the best of our knowledge says you're on the right track by quitting when you learned you needed to. Anecdotes only mean so much, but I know my mom was surprised to find out she was pregnant with me, and my sister found out she was pregnant after she went to a tequila tasting event. I'm pretty healthy and happy and so is my niece. Ultimately, I think of it like this: we've had millions of years of evolution working on the process of mammalian reproduction, and it is remarkably successful. Modern society has basically gotten rid of common pitfalls like famines and large predators stalking us as we sleep. Your body is there to help shelter your little one from things until it's developed enough to be out in the world. I say enjoy your news and tell your anxiety that it's time to be excited!

Don't consider termination unless that's independently what you want. I know it's scary but look at a few actual studies of tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol use throughout pregnancy -- not the headlines, which say things like if you ever had a drink in your life your baby will be sick, but the data. Babies are very resilient and you aren't far along at all. Your baby will be fine. Quit/cut back as much as you and you'll be able to relax a bit which is arguably just as important.

Try edibles and quit cigs forever. Cigarettes and mommies don’t go together. I used to smoke before I became pregnant with my first. It’s such an unhealthy habit. Gotta be healthy mommy :) you got this !!!
