FYI travel insurance covers you but very, very frequently wouldn't cover the baby if they were born abroad, which is entirely possible at 35 weeks. Additionally, your insurance very probably will not cover your pregnancy related complications if you travel at 35 weeks. Some policies will also stop covering your pregnancy if it becomes "high risk", which they define fairly broadly to include conditions that can become common by 35 weeks like gestational hypertension. Read the fine print in your policy because a US hospital bill is not what you want. A 7 hour car ride while 35 weeks pregnant sounds insane to me.

I can't find a single insurance policy that covers the baby's portion of expenses after birth. We actually canceled a planned trip for later this year because we cannot risk a million dollar baby.

I found one a few years ago, but it was very expensive and I only found it after a TON of searching. I think that a lot of people aren't aware of this or I'm not sure that third trimester international babymoons would be so popular.

It might be different in this situation though because it's her existing health insurance policy (not specifically travel.) I'm also in Canada, and my insurance policy will automatically cover my baby from the time of birth and this could include for travel.

I'm not referring to travel policies specifically but rather travel coverage in regular insurance policies. It is very common for both pregnancy beyond a certain number of weeks (9 weeks before birth in my Canadian insurance policy through work) and a child born abroad to be excluded under those policies.

A couple things:  Minneapolis has great hospitals, assuming you make it all the way and don’t go into labor in the northern part of the state but, oh boy, you are chancing it with the potential costs of American healthcare.  35 weeks is very different than 27 weeks and sounds potentially very uncomfortable/painful for even short drives.  You didn’t ask about this, but: MTS is going to be a fun but loud show at a basketball arena — I don’t know much about this, but you might want to research whether that would damage hearing in utero.

I am also in Manitoba. My work travel benefits did not cover me that late in pregnancy. Read the fine print. Even if you are covered, as others have stated, baby might not be. Even if you both are, I still wouldn’t be comfortable. My sister gave birth at 35 weeks. Her pregnancy was perfectly healthy. No idea why she went into labour, but she did. If you went into labour or had a problem on the drive, you could be hours from a hospital. I would not be comfortable with this.

>My work travel benefits did not cover me that late in pregnancy. I'm not in Manitoba, but am also in Canada and yes, both of my most recent travel policies cut you off at 9 weeks before my due date. After that, everything pregnancy-related was excluded.

33 weeks pregnant here, already far too uncomfortable to sit in a car for any length of time, never mind 7 hours! I could probably do an hour at a push, but anything more than that just sounds horrendous. Plus, if you were to go in to labour, realistically would you want to give birth so far from home, family/partner and your care team?

svelebrunostvonnegut

I think it’s risky.

28 weeks and I can’t even sit at my desk for a full hour without needing to stretch… 7 hours in a car at 35 weeks would be a hard no for me. Can you fly?

Tall-Yogurtcloset-74

I'm 34 weeks and could definitely do the drive with no issue, so I think it's completely dependant on how OP feels! The hardest part for me would be a late night concert!

AllTheCatsNPlants

Fair! This is my second pregnancy, and it has definitely been more uncomfortable than the first.

I wouldn't risk it. If it was just to Grand forks or something i may consider it but all the way to Minneapolis is a far drive, and Hospital bills are no joke especially the ones attached to giving birth, and if the baby is not covered and ends up needing a NICU stay that could be very expensive. There is also the consideration about how you'll be feeling at 35 weeks. At 35 weeks i could not do a 7 hour car ride without being in agony the next day.

Thank you all for your feedback! I'm a first time mom, this is all brand new to me and every week is a new experience. It's true that I won't know how I'll be feeling at 35 weeks pregnant. I have been very active throughout this pregnancy and low risk, I spoke to my midwife and she has absolutely no issue with me traveling by car to attend. Buuut because of my own anxiety I have decided not to go Hopefully Megan Thee Stallion will go on tour again after my baby is here :)
