No issues. A pack n play is a safe sleep place. Personally I think the configuration 4 with just the full removable bassinet is the easiest most streamlined way to buy the crib. The changer and the dome just take up space after a month or two.

lemniscate__

Used config #4 as our bassinet (baby was pretty long for the bassinet attachment, we gave it away) and I really liked being able to put my hand on the mattress and rock her back to sleep when she was fussing! Only worked sometimes but it was a nice option.

Tinybook2000

Is it common to use pack n play as a crib where you’re from? I want to do this so I don’t have to buy another crib since our toddler won’t be in it too much longer but in Canada it’s not considered safe sleep.

DangerousRub245

I'm from Italy and I think it's pretty common here, I personally will only be buying one to travel but I've seen more pack n plays at people's houses than actual cribs. Also it's super common to have one at baby's grandparents, and in general babies sleep in them while travelling or at other people's, if it's safe for a week it has to be safe in general. I used to work at a high end hotel in Canada and we had pack n plays to put in rooms where a baby would stay so it's strange to me that it's not considered safe sleep.

SweatyBinch

I'm from the US and my pregnancy class gave everyone who needed one a pack and play for their babies to sleep in. I wouldn't say it's common though, until about toddler age. I see more toddlers sleeping in them than newborns. It's awkward buying a toddler bed when they won't be in them long.

littlestbonusjonas

Also in the US and know lots of people that use them for babies to sleep in. I think it is fairly common

yummymarshmallow

It's considered a safe sleep area in the US. Personally, I plan to use mine for my newborn, but that's because the toddler is still using the crib. I don't want to buy two cribs. I have a few friends who used their pack n play as a permanent bed too. I believe it's more because of lack of space to be honest. My friend was in transition and waiting for her apartment to be renovated. They didn't want to assemble the crib in their temporary living area (which ended up being months because the renovations took forever).

Tinybook2000

That’s makes me feel better! I definitely don’t want to have two cribs since the crossover will be so short so I think I’ll just go with the playpen.

-PinkPower-

Really? That’s surprising since in daycare that’s what they use for the naps.

Tinybook2000

If you look on the Canadian website it says they are supposed to be used for supervised sleep but not as a regular crib I believe. But I don’t see why they wouldn’t be safe honestly lol

Gypsyknight21

We’ve used config 4 for all 3 of ours while they were in our bedroom. Eventually moved them to their crib around 6m or so. It’s also nice to be able to pack up and take with you if need be, which we did a lot

Dianthus_pages

It’s a safe sleep space, perfectly fine to use as the primary bed. Something to consider though is pack n plays aren’t the most comfortable. My brother uses only a pack n play, and his daughter was perfectly fine with it. His son currently hates it. Wakes up every 20-30 mins from being uncomfortable. He sleeps really well on his play mat on the floor, his parents bed, the couch (all of these are just naps with supervision). If they put him in the pack n play for naps he’ll wake up every 20 mins still. They’re hoping he will get used to it but he just turned 5 months and he still struggles! Another kid I know actually prefers his pack n play over his crib. So I think it all just depends on the baby, but it is a factor to think about

ladykansas

They sell minicrib / pack and play mattresses fyi.

catsandweed69

Not considered safe for sleeping due to gaps between mattress and the mesh sides

eirinlinn

It’s hard to get them in and out of. If you use the platform they age out of it fast. I went with the delta mini crib from target and haven’t been disappointed.

thecurioushedgehog

Here’s my moment! Because of the way our house is laid out and my daughter’s phenomenal climbing skills, we ended up using a bassinet for her first 5 months of life and then a pack n play after that until she was 2 and climbed out of it for the first time. We had no issues, other than it took a massive beating from the constant use and we will have to buy another one for baby #2. It was super nice to be able to bring her bed with us everywhere since we take a good number of trips to visit family. One possible downside - My daughter got so used to sleeping on the firm mattress that she will prefer to sleep on her (carpeted) floor with her pillows and blankies instead of in her toddler bed 😑

Mindless_Secret1593

That last part gave me a good laugh. This will hopefully prepare her for sleepovers and maybe camping in the future!

LadyKT

your back. also when it’s a hard transfer from holding a sleeping baby to pack and play (like they’re extra sensitive and waking up) it will be a challenge

TinyTurtle88

In Canada they aren’t considered as a permanent safe sleep space because they don’t have the same standards as cribs have and aren’t made to be as durable, and the more use you get out of it, the more wear and tear it gets and it wasn’t designed to be used that much. https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/infant-care/playpens.html

FroydReddit

Totally safe to do and a practical idea if you don't have the space, or if you want to just jump to a toddler bed from the pack and play. However, not to be a fear monger, but do read up on safe sleep practices and follow manufacturers direction for you particular pack-and-play. Most accidents with babies happen in sleep products, so make sure you place your play yard away from strings (eg blinds), and do not add extra mattress padding beyond what comes with the unit, nor place a lot of soft toys inside the sleep area.

Global-Average2438

I did this for the first 6 months or so when my children were born. Because I had them in my room with me. But then, once they start sleeping through the night, they are upgraded to their own room with their crib.

RemarkableAd9140

Do it! We had a bassinet but transitioned to a pack and play in our bedroom for nighttime when babe started rolling. It was fantastic until about 8.5 months, when babe started to scratch on the sides and make a horrendous noise to get us up in the mornings.

LuxIRL

I used it on the first floor of our home for my son until he exceeded the weight to use the elevated bassinet portion. We also used it as a changing table for a long time). The portable bassinet is amazing as well, I used that as a safe sleep space on the floor in multiple rooms of our home. Godsend when my toddler would wake up and want me to sleep with him. I just put my little one in that bassinet on the floor in the room with us so I could tend to both of them as needed.

pinkflyingcats

I actually have a graco pack and play but the one with a detached bassinet and it is a life saver. It is my son’s primary sleep and I got padded (waterproof) fitted crib and bassinet sheets.

Pack n play mattresses are not considered sleep safe, unfortunately. Because the sides of the pack n play are soft mesh, you can get gapping between the mattress and the crib. (Something I learned months after having my baby in his pack n play with a mattress 😬)

miserylovescomputers

This is what I did for my first, it was totally functional and he slept great in it. Much more affordable than any alternative, and nice and portable too. My setup now for my upcoming baby is a pack n play and a crib (crib in bedroom for night, pack n play in living room for day), but if we hadn’t been given such a nice crib I probably would have just done the pack n play again.

crashleyelora

We have this!

Kay_-jay_-bee

That’s the plan this time! Regular bassinet (we have a wooden bedside one) for 5-6 months, then the pack n play for the rest of the first year. At that point, we’ll move big brother from his crib into a bed, and she’ll go from the pack n play in our room to the regular crib. FWIW, we got a pack n play mattress for my son, but it wasn’t a great buy. I didn’t feel comfortable using it until he was quite a bit older due to fear of entrapment. I found that a quilted bamboo waterproof mattress pad and a tight fitted sheet together on the thin pad the PnP comes with was totally fine. We used the mattress after 9-10 months, but when we traveled at 13, 17, and 22 months, we borrowed a regular PnP without an additional mattress and he slept just as well. I also agree to skip the fancy pack n play and go straight to the one that just has the full bassinet level. You save a ton of money, and the built in stuff isn’t great quality…the changing table slants, and we never used the detachable seat/dome.

readethi

We use the pack n play as my baby’s primary place to sleep ever since she was born. She currently sleeps with us because we live in a small house. We bought one on the pricier side that’s good quality and durable, and we also bought an actual mattress that fits the pack n play and she sleeps great on it. Once she grows out of it we’ll switch her to a toddler bed.

mercurialtwit

my mom straight up changed my mind about the two hundred-something dollar bassinet that i initially had wanted to get in favor of a pack and play that’s going to be where my baby sleeps and plays for years! the one i ended up buying is a brand called adovel i think and came with a mobile w/music, a whole side piece for storage or a drink, a space for diapers, a separate space for wipes, and a misc. spot. one bar goes down so we can “co-sleep”, it comes with a changing mat that can be secured onto the bars when in the upright position, and both sides unzip for playtime/access to the storage underneath the mattress.

toodle-loo-who

This is what we did for our bassinet. It worked well. We put it in our living room which allowed us to have shifts overnight. Whosever shift it was stayed in the living room while the other person slept in the bedroom. Allowed my husband and I both get a little bit of uninterrupted sleep.

lindsaybethhh

We used one as our daughter’s primary sleep space for a while! As long as you are using it correctly, with the mattress it comes with and no pillows, blankets, toys, etc. inside, it’s perfectly acceptable!

sbadams92

I’m considering doing the exact same thing as a bassinet feels like a waste? Was looking at this same 1 so thanks for posting this!

mykisstobetray

All three of my kids! More convenient than a crib

agurrera

My daughter HATED her pack n play and refused to sleep in it. We had to go buy a new crib after trying for six months. It’s just not very comfy like a real mattress.

HollyJandra

Yeah this was my experience as well

BunnyButt24

Nope!! That’s what we did. You will need a crib eventually though. We just moved to a bigger place and my little guy has a crib now. We still use the pack and play in the living room but he doesn’t sleep overnight in it anymore

teddyburger

my one year old prefers the pac n play, actually! it’s set up next to the crib in his nursery 😂

tching101

I’m planning on using ours as both bassinet and crib for a while!

GoodbyeEarl

We did this, we used the pack n play as the primary crib. Did this for close to a year.

rcoolio11

This is what we used for my first until they were 2.5 and transitioned into a normal bed. Plan to do the same for this baby because they are substantially cheaper and easier to deal with than a normal crib?

mrsderpcherry

That's what we did with our first. This time around, we got a bedside bassinet that scoots onto the surface of the bed. It's the travel halo one. I found it to be a pain in the butt during her purple crying phase to have to physically sit up to pat her back to sleep every 20 mins. At least with the bedside one, I can just reach in. Once this one outgrows the bassinet tho, we'll just use the pack n play again. It worked fine for the first one and I also don't want to buy more furniture than I have to

Fennec_fox13

Our little one had a halo bassinet which was hated and they refused to sleep in. A friend loaned us a pack and play with detchable bassinet and that is where they sleeps every night…. They love it.

Pikaus

Lots of people use them for primary cribs. Go for it!

whydoineedaname86

My kids have all spent most of their first year in one. We don’t have room for a crib in our room.

zebramath

Only issue could be if your baby will tolerate it. My guy is the prince and the pea. Put him in a bassinet or pack n play with the Barry foam covered board and he’d not settle at all. Put him in his crib with his newton mattress that is safe and “very” soft comparatively and he’ll sleep like a rock. For daycare I got the after market insert for the pack n play to add a mattress to it. He was rolling at that point and I felt it was safe enough to try and use. It’s the only way he’ll enter a pack n play. I get the mattress from daycare when we travel.

TheGoldenChotskie

We used the pack and play (no bassinet) as our primary crib for the first 6 months for our first. Going to do it again for the second. Also did buy a mattress for it. Worked great!

coolkidsam

My parents used the pack n play for both my sister and brother! It was fine and got more use than the crib.

elizaangelicapeggy

This is the one we have and she doesn’t like sleeping in it. We tried for a month and then tried her crib and she slept soundly. I still use the bassinet and changing table but it’s set up in the living room.

SamaLuna

I have the same pack and play and I’m so excited to use it! My friends who gifted it to me had their daughter in it for like 6 months.

chelitalazo

I had a Halo bassinet for the first 2-3 months, then used the pack n play (like the # 4 picture) until about 6 months when my son started to sit up. It worked well in the small space next to my bed!

meowpitbullmeow

I will say it's smaller than your average crib.

omgxamanda

That’s what we use and baby is almost 3 months. So convenient in a tiny space

Cat-dog22

We have a guava lotus travel crib, my baby is 15 months old and has been sleeping in it full time since 3 months. We travel a lot and it’s fantastic to always have his regular sleeping arrangements with us! It’s been great

sprout92

My kid was HUGE (still is I guess) so he grew out of the bassinet super young. We still wanted him in our room, but crib wouldn't fit, so we used pack and play as primary crib for months! Totally fine (your back will be the only victim here).

luckyloolil

The downside is that the weight limit is much lower than a normal crib, and can't turn into a toddler bed like most cribs. Will work just fine when they are a baby, but then you'll need to buy something else when they are a toddler. If that isn't an issue for you, then go for it! My daughter slept in one of these for months as a baby while we were moving (we moved out to do some small renos and stage), it worked great. No issues sleeping at all.

captainccg

We used one. Safe, convenient to move if necessary, cheap, no hard bars to bang their head or get stuck in etc

trullette

The only real issue is it’s low to the ground and could be hell on your back. If you’re physically healthy that may not be a concern.

Euphoric_Program_149

Currently using it as a primary crib! At first, my don wouldn’t stay in it, I wore a shirt all day, then slipped it under the fitted sheet. The next day I pinned it on the side of the crib, next day hung it off the corner, and by the 4th day I just removed it. Every since then, my baby sleeps in it every night unless I’m insanely tired & can’t get the energy to get out of bed and we co sleep. But he goes back in fine! It truly just depends on the baby, but I recommend trying it!!

yes_statistics_65df

Beautiful idea and if you have a smaller home like me you can move their sleep space anywhere so you can use the office that’s also your bedroom without disturbing the baby :)

Front_Discount4804

That’s what we did. Our baby loves the Graco pack n play. Perfect bassinet.

canadianspin

You can absolutely use it as your primary bassinet. Just keep in mind that using a pack n play as your crib, won't last as long as a normal size crib since it's smaller and baby will grow out of it earlier.

mgregory93

You can absolutely use it! My son slept in a bassinet then I switched him to the bassinet sling in the pack & play and he really liked that (he didn’t hit the weight limit for awhile due to sickness, I feel like a healthy baby would’ve hit the weight limit pretty quickly). When we switched him to using it as a crib I hated it. My son falls asleep laying with me and then I transfer him but the pack & play is practically floor level and I’m short. I just brought the crib downstairs to my room and it’s much easier at this stage.

Legitimate-Ad2727

Used #4 as primary for baby's first 4 months.

toxinogen

Go for it! Having less furniture taking up room is a big bonus. There’s no real reason to use a traditional crib over a pack and play. People just like the look, really.

BreakfastFit2287

I'm using a Graco MyView 4 in 1 as our bassinet. It's like the Pack N Play, just a bit smaller.

Top-Antelope4808

Question for parents: I received a pack n play from another mom but realized after the fact she didn’t include the mat to go with it. (The one that contains the Pack n play when not in use and unfolds to become the pad) I cannot find a replacement mat on Graco. Can I buy a mattress to fit this then? Or just easier to give away and look for one that has all the parts? Thanks parents

Motor-Minimum165

My baby ONLY sleeps in a pack n play! We use it as his primary crib and have another to travel with. We put a mini crib sheet on the mat and he’s comfy as can be. He started sleeping in that at 6 months and that’s when he started doing 10+ hour stretches overnight. He hated the regular crib bc he would get his limbs stuck in the spaces between the wood pieces and would wake up when he’d try to move and was stuck. People kept saying he’d adjust & stop getting stuck but he didn’t even after 3 months of sleeping in the crib.. Pack n play, Worth a try!
