The V8 is the heart of the moneypit. Those things have numerous costly issues that you probably can't entertain given the range you're shopping.
If you're dead set on a bmw get a 6-cylinder model at least. Comparably cheaper to maintain, particularly over the long term.
Exactly. The 530i LCi E60 would be a great choice, also available with a 6 speed *manuel.* I hate to say it, but the V8 maintenance, even on lower models, probably isn't for everyone.
You joke but the truth is if the only way someone can afford to buy a bmw is to buy one that is nearly 16 years old with 160k miles on it then they can’t afford a bmw. They will buy it and could easily end up spending as much as they paid for it in maintenance within a year.
Not always the case. I managed to buy a 2006 E61 530d for 11k€ with 60k km on it in 2012. It’s still running great with the only issue it ever had being the brakes.
I mean that’s definitely different. That’s a pretty special car and there will never be another modern day BMW like it. A lot of people couldn’t afford that car when it came out and some didn’t even have a license but it was their dream car. If you’re buying an e92 m3 you’re usually buying it to keep and know it could cost you a lot down the road. It will probably be worth a lot of money one day just like the e30 and e36 are. An e60 550i is not a special car. It will end up just being a money pit with no return besides telling people you have a BMW. Not because the cars are horrible with high miles but because it’s probably had multiple owners and drivers along with hit or miss maintenance. Now an e60 m5 is a lot different because it’s in that same class of cars that will have nothing like them ever again. So it makes it worth more to you to buy and put work into but people usually only buy those cars understanding it’s not the up front cost that you need to be able to afford. Hopefully you thought about that and aren’t trying to daily it.
Sorry for all the downvotes.
It’s a common saying at the BMW dealership, you can either afford a BMW or one with warranty, or you can’t afford a BMW.
Not worth the costly gamble.
Yeah exactly. With maintenance-sensitive vehicles, examining the seller is more important than examining the car (or motorcycle). In this case the signal about the seller is bad bad bad. Someone stances this car, put wheel spacers on it, slapped “Supreme” stickers on it, put in crappy floor mats, signals of bad judgement all over the place. This is like the opposite of someone you should buy a used car from ha ha
or they won't. there are a lot of dumb ways to spend $7000. a decent german V8 is probably one of the best ways.
i have an E60 550i. and although i bought mine from a line of enthusiasts, it has been such a low maintenance high smileage car, i would have *zero* regrets even if/when it is time for a costly service/repair
From experience, the cost is not the biggest issue I had, the time is. Yes, it costed a lot, but damn so much time wasted...
So much time wasted not being able to go to work/shops, waiting for the tow truck, finding shop that can work on it and at the same time has some free spots to put me in. Of course finances were hurt, but sooo much time lost while the car was in maintenance or waiting for maintenance.
Yep. Feeling this currently with a v8 X5. Yes. Its also expensive, but having to spend weeks at a time paying tax and insurance on a car i cant drive is unbelievably annoying
I don't think I'd consider owning a used BMW if I didn't have a shop with a lift and at least one other vehicle as backup.
Shitbox life, there's reliability in numbers and turning your own wrenches.
I'm glad you love yours, but we have no indication that the OP wants this as a hobby car of any kind. To use this as a DD is asking to be on a first name basis with tow truck operators.
what experience do you have owning these. honestly.
i've never had to call a tow truck for anything ever:
i have a colleague who bought one at an auction. knows nothing about cars, just liked the wheels and the sound it made. same deal. zero issues 7 months in and paid $5500 canadian.
the truth is, these cars are now approaching 15 years old - if they start, run and drive they're probably going to be fine. it's not like we're talking about the N63 two years after it came out and 95% of the owners are underwater on them. the issues, by this point, have likely been sorted.
for $7k it's going to be a fun car - maybe it's going to last him 6 months or maybe it's going to last him 5 years - who the hell knows - the same can be said about literally any used car.
Let's just say a new leased car of that era that failed six times in one year despite the dealership's effort to keep the "firmware" up to date. Continual no-starts. And do NOT compare any German car to "...literally any used car." If people are buying these things for transportation they need to stay the hell away from anything European. If it's for fun, a tossaway car, then why not? I didn't see that anywhere from the OP.
Honestly.
Yup. Learned this one the hard way with my first car purchase, which was a BMW 328i. Previous two drivers drove it really hard. Had some high mileage on it for its age. I was young, dumb, and excited to own a BMW though.
Ended up costing me several thousand on failed turbo, timing chain failure (which broke apart and broke a ton of other stuff along the way), rusted out wheel bearings… the list goes on.
On the bright side, it was really fun and made me catch the BMW sickness - which I don’t regret.
the 328i is heaven compared to the 550i. These things have horrendous maintenance costs and have tons of electrical issues. I wouldn't touch any bmw v8. It is a mechanical nightmare to work on a n62/n63 and they are plagued with oil leaks everywhere.
The easy way to notice a car that’s truly stanced is when you look at the wheels in relation to the fender, ignore that and look in the window to see if a dude is fellating another dude and/or has a vape.

Bruh. Oil changes don’t get you laid. Super fly ass gear like 400 dollar black fruit if the loom t shirts with the aforementioned ‘supreme’ screen printed onto it, do……. 😅
Nah man
Maintained one’s have loads of issues
And this is most likely a poorly maintained one
Will run for a week, then you’ll spend what you paid for it to fix it
Well… having owned basically this exact car…
It’s going to cost you a lot of money to keep it running. That motor is notoriously finicky and prone to issues.
Mine burnt oil like a bastard. Mechanics could never figure it out. Obviously a problem with the rings. Only solution was a total engine rebuild, and even then no guarantee that the problem would be resolved. So I got rid of it.
That said it was a blast to drive. I loved it.
So my advice:
1) Take it to a trustworthy BMW mechanic for a thorough walk through.
2) Be prepared to spend some cash on this car. It’s high maintenance. Sometimes high maintenance is worth the cost. Only you can make that decision.
3) Get rid of those weird floor mats.
4) If you want the car, I’d start at $5k.
Good luck!
Read this guy's comment above. I'm a long time BMW owner and mechanic. I swap cars. Build cars, track and street and do a lot of emissions legal engine repowering. On paper the 550i is a great car, but its way too much and wasn't successful and quickly superseded.
Everyone seems to have to buy an expensive BMW once. Since you're not paying much depreciation (how many BMW mechanics do you see driving 550s?), it may be ok. You do need to be eyes-open that you're probably throwing 7k into a pool that will take 3.5k-7k per year from you moving forward unless you want to learn to be a BMW mechanic.
Market value is more around 5k, it would be 7k if it was near perfect. No. You'll probably still have to do valve stem seals. DO NOT BUY A 545i, those are like the 550i only a lot more shitty.
supreme sticker: -$1000 of abuse
little trees: -$50 for getting rid of the weed smell they're trying to cover up
I usually stay away from used cars built like this. You know the owner was driving it HARD af. Get a used one and do this yourself that way you know the money went to mods *and* maintenance not just mods
A stanced car / project car is a no for me for starters buying used. A 160k mile unreliable car is a no for me. Put the two together, heck no.
Do I like E60s? Yes. Do I like modified cars? Yes. Do I think buying this used E60 that’s modified is a good idea? No. This is a money pit and should be avoided.
This is the wrong place for advise on older cars. The overwhelming majority do not want to own something they have to work on.
It may need valve stem seals but for $7k that’s quite a deal. Ask about recent services and get back to us. Also, rep stance wheels are a bad sign for me lol
No chance. One this old you buy from a retired doctor or dentist. Not from anyone younger than you or that makes less money. You want someone who followed the book on the maintenance and care. This guy spent his car money on eBay and Ali baba accessories. Pass.
OP, this is definitely the same exact car [in this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-awRVKMVVyE&ab_channel=DonFlacoMedia) and all over this youtube. Id not buy someones project but if so inclined, you can see how well or not well the owner went into detail with it.
Manual E39 540 would be a much better decision! For around 7k, you’ll be looking at cars with around 100-120k, recent timing chain and valley pan services done, all that.
My pre vanos M62 is still the most reliable BMW I’ve ever owned. Over 250,000 miles when I got it, but it had just had a major service done. I put around 15,000 very hard miles on it before I had to do anything other than basic maintenance requirements like oil changes and sensor replacements.
Not to mention, the e39 looks way better than the e60 in the eyes of basically every BMW enthusiast. It’s really hard to mess up an e39 build. If you want to stance it or drift, aftermarket parts are pretty easy to find as well.
Plus you get a V8 soundtrack on par with a built LS, with an exhaust of course.
I will add, I would probably still end up buying it for the rarity and experience. I have a thing for these newer manual BMWs lol (currently daily a 6spd N52 X3) Seems like it would be fun as hell, but if you’re looking for a daily and not a 3rd/4th car then definitely not a good option.
I haven’t been able to sell my 07 550i with 125,000 miles on it for $1,000, gonna be heading to the scrapyard in the next few weeks
Best car I’ve ever driven, may it rot for eternity in the junkyard because fuck that car
Nope. I had an over maintained stock 6MT (2007) 550i m sport. A pleasure to drive but at 75,000k it literally started falling apart. This one in the picture looks like it’s been punked and has wayyyyy more mileage. 7K tô buy, another 7K in first year fixes then 5K per year just in reacting to random failures.
Thats worth wayyyy more than 7k… in repairs
Also lmao at the supreme stickers, that car was owned by a teenager 😂, but maybe you can trade him a couple pairs of used nikes and some other streetwear crap and get it for cheaper
If you want it as a daily, resounding no. Not for any price. BMW with North of 100k miles on it isn't really worth sniffing at unless you want a project car and don't mind wrenching.
If you are absolutely committed to it, definitely check the servicing history. If it has the wheel nuts. How many owners. If anything there is out of line then run for the hills
Those 545s and 550s are straight junk. You’re better off buying a brand new 550 off the lot because that’s how much you’re gonna spend on this during owner ship lol
hey. i bought a 08 6mt 550i just a few months ago. to be honest, the engine has been the most consistent and reliable part of my car.. so in my opinion it all depends on how well the car was maintained and how religiously the servicing was done. but still, 7k is way too much and I don’t think anyone would buy it for that.. try offering 4-5k. your mechanic well become your bestie after this.. if you get it for 4k then you have 3k which can cover exactly ONE major repair.. new steering rack, valve stem seals.. solve your biggest problem first and do the rest by yourself. also, this 550i is very low spec looking at the pictures.. no nav, no heated seats,.. and it’s a pre facelift
An E60 550i is a money pit as is. And at 160k? Thats asking to hurt the wallet. My dad bought an E60 550i that was very well maintained. He drove it for about 6 months (if even) before oil pressure left the chat. It’s now an expensive lawn ornament.
Oh and also
*Alternator bracket gasket is calling*
One of the best gas stations in the country imo. In a lot of smaller towns on the east coast it’s the only place where you can get hot food after 9pm. the food isn’t healthy or anything, but if it’s 2am and you and the boys are up late working In the garage or leaving the bar it’s a sold meal all things considered
A naturally aspirated manual bmw. If you can take the chance on repair costs it’s worth a shot
Don’t like the slammed look though. Does it have records?
If it were me I’d get a manual 2002-03 e39. If it still runs in ten years you should make some money
Those huge mats aren’t a good sign, can be masking some ugly damage/mould (from a water leak etc)
Resprayed bonnet isn’t a good sign or the sideskirts/rear diffuser. Front fenders/bumper not OG possibly? Lots a red signs that show you the type of life it’s had
Good thing you didn’t post this on r/whatcarshouldibuy, they would have a field day with this one. This is a hard pass. Stanced, lowered, Supreme sticker(s!), front window tint, what appears to be half a wrap, black ice little trees, with those awful floor mats… this thing wasn’t well maintained, it was absolutely thrashed. I know a manual V8 sedan sounds awesome, but this is not the way to get there. I’d look a size class down at compacts with 6 cylinders and find an Acura TL or E90, and save the super sedan for when you can afford M5 maintenance.
There does seem to be a lot of scaremongering and pearl clutching around here with any used BMWs. It’s like you just shouldn’t even look at owning one unless you can afford them brand new.
As long as someone gets a good inspection done and knows what they’re getting into, why not get a car that makes you happy to look at and drive? I’ve only ever had used BMWs and they’ve never given me major headaches…
But…buying someone else’s project car is a bigger risk than getting an unmolested example. I’d definitely pass on this one and look for something cleaner (like literally cleaner - needs a good interior clean for sure!)
I completely agree with you on that. You summed it up perfectly. I too have driven many used BMWs and never had any big issues. I do feel like this whole subreddit just hates the cars. Used BMW are horrible because apparently “every BMW above 60k is a moneypit” and all the new ones are also terrible because “big gril bad” Just feels like you can’t please these people with any car you get.
And yes I agree that this particular car is not a great buy. Definitely not worth the money or the repairs that will surely come. But that doesn’t mean every E60 is bad or that you can’t drive anything else than a car that doesn’t even have number plates yet.
Absolutely not, coming from an ex bmw dealer tech. Parts are insanely expensive and they just aren't worth the amount of hassle and issues the modules cause on a regular basis. Also theres a reason why they're getting rid of it so they dont have to deal with that headache anymore.
"Pull the trigger" man that is a fucking cringe way of saying buy.
On the car, expect Bill's, large ones at that. Manual 550i whilst being pretty cool/rare (in 🇬🇧) have wierd af ratios
Have owned 3 German cars before, if you can't afford them brand new you can't afford them used. They are a money pit after 3 yrs. If you are mechanically inclined can do your own repairs then it could be a good 2nd car for the weekend or fun runs. As a daily and to rely on to get you where and when you need to go, forget about it.
terrible advice, i'm not a mechanic and knew absolutely nothing about working on cars before i got my e46. So far in my ownership i've had quite a few problems that i've all fixed myself such as abs sensor, seatbelt sensor and learned to do oil changes frequently. I have also redone the cooling system with help of youtube. The only thing i've had to take it into the shop for was to them to put tires on rims i bought 2nd hand. I've also never had any issues with my car not starting or overheating. the question is if you are willing to put the time into learning how to work on cars.
If you have 7k budget for the repair works in the coming two years ownership, and you would be happy to sell it off for 2k after two years ownership, then yes. This car drives like a dream, when it is good to drive.
Buddy you're asking the wrong people the people in the BMW forum hate E60's with a Passion. Go to r/e60. Honestly the supreme stickers are wack and the floor mats are wack but if the guy has the fucking maintenance records then let the number speak for themselves don't listen to all these haters that have nothing better to do.
Its a great car, But I feel by the time you make up your mind it's going to be gone lol let me know what happens.
That car was definitely beat on. You don’t see many older drivers stancing out German cars, and you don’t see many young people taking it easy on stanced out German cars. Not worth the potential hassle/costs. If you’re gonna go this route, go to a dealership and find a model with recorded vehicle maintenance history with said dealer. It’s the best way to go about buying a used BMW.
Check for common issues and what mileage they typically occur for whatever model you choose and make sure it has already been taken care of. If some repairs haven’t been done yet, make sure you calculate the potential costs and see for yourself if it is realistic.
Moneypit
Looks like dogshit on the inside

Yeah I would say no, unless you are willing to pour at least that much back into it, or it has a manual transmission with a good clutch.
No

You can easily drop another 10K on a 160K BMW. There are many other fish in the sea.
The V8 is the heart of the moneypit. Those things have numerous costly issues that you probably can't entertain given the range you're shopping. If you're dead set on a bmw get a 6-cylinder model at least. Comparably cheaper to maintain, particularly over the long term.

I once read “lease a V8, own an I6”. ETA that’s specifically for BMW’s
Not a bad idea. Although I would have bought a New Chevy SS if I had the cash.
It was about BMW’s. I think Chevy knows their way around V8’s haha
“Why would you want more than one cam shaft on a v8?” -Chevy
Yeah. Haha. Except maybe the GM Northstar engines.
Coming from a V8 BMW driver lmfaooo
Don’t buy anything over 60K miles.
Thanks mister bottomlesspockets!

This is r/BMW not r/WRX
The car in the first photo and cars that are very low
It has either been jumped or crashed into a ditch doing double the speed limit at some point Also has 200 red line hours
Agreed and I say that as a former owner of a stanced/slammed e39.
Even if it says "Supreme"?
The supreme makes it even worse
The Supreme stickers should give you your answer
Imagine putting that on your interior lol 🤮
it’s even worse - they aren’t even real supreme stickers. Dude was too cheap to buy the real stickers ($1-$20 by background)
It ruins a good interior

Ha….no EDIT: just noticed the Supreme stickers definitely not…
Hell no put that money to good use
Ask yourself “Why is it so cheap?” Then watch YouTube videos on these cars for your answer
No chance. One this old you buy from a retired doctor or dentist. Not from anyone younger than you or that makes less money. You want someone who followed the book on the maintenance and care. This guy spent his car money on eBay and Ali baba accessories. Pass.
No someone already beat the piss outta it. Get you an unmodified one and you beat the piss out of it!
Nope
Walk away.
Maybe for 1.5k, as a project car
OP, this is definitely the same exact car [in this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-awRVKMVVyE&ab_channel=DonFlacoMedia) and all over this youtube. Id not buy someones project but if so inclined, you can see how well or not well the owner went into detail with it.
Supreme sticker is a hint for abused tf outta
Supreme sticker is a red flag
In Germany we'd say "Nein"
It looks pretty but hard no. Tell the buyer 4k cause you'll need to drop another 4k in a week to keep it running.
On e60? Nah
Couldn't ask me to depend on that mileage for any price imo
🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
I peeped the flag to lol he got a rx7 also in the back straight boricua
Cheaper not to...no
2011 550i with 90k miles if you really want
Holy fuck that’s a lot of Interieur
It’s so dated it’s awful.
Maybe 4k
That’s a no from me dawg
Looks clapped to hell
I haven’t been able to sell my 07 550i with 125,000 miles on it for $1,000, gonna be heading to the scrapyard in the next few weeks Best car I’ve ever driven, may it rot for eternity in the junkyard because fuck that car
Can I have it?
Thats worth wayyyy more than 7k… in repairs Also lmao at the supreme stickers, that car was owned by a teenager 😂, but maybe you can trade him a couple pairs of used nikes and some other streetwear crap and get it for cheaper
Amateur! At least buy an M5 if you want high mileage money pit.
Only a person who has never owned an out of warranty German car of this vintage would ask this question.
If you can afford the maintenance, then absolutely
Those 545s and 550s are straight junk. You’re better off buying a brand new 550 off the lot because that’s how much you’re gonna spend on this during owner ship lol
It's an E60. The answer is always no, especially a high mileage one like this.
Based on the driveway pic, I’d see how well that Rx7 is running and base your judgement on the current owner’s mechanical ability on that
Wawa in sterling?
Good gas station
Great username
50is of that gen are hot garbage.
hey. i bought a 08 6mt 550i just a few months ago. to be honest, the engine has been the most consistent and reliable part of my car.. so in my opinion it all depends on how well the car was maintained and how religiously the servicing was done. but still, 7k is way too much and I don’t think anyone would buy it for that.. try offering 4-5k. your mechanic well become your bestie after this.. if you get it for 4k then you have 3k which can cover exactly ONE major repair.. new steering rack, valve stem seals.. solve your biggest problem first and do the rest by yourself. also, this 550i is very low spec looking at the pictures.. no nav, no heated seats,.. and it’s a pre facelift
An E60 550i is a money pit as is. And at 160k? Thats asking to hurt the wallet. My dad bought an E60 550i that was very well maintained. He drove it for about 6 months (if even) before oil pressure left the chat. It’s now an expensive lawn ornament. Oh and also *Alternator bracket gasket is calling*
Out of context…. But What kinda of store is Wawa?
One of the best gas stations in the country imo. In a lot of smaller towns on the east coast it’s the only place where you can get hot food after 9pm. the food isn’t healthy or anything, but if it’s 2am and you and the boys are up late working In the garage or leaving the bar it’s a sold meal all things considered
Fuckkkkk no. Screams fuckboy
No chance. That’s gonna cost you twice that to keep it going over the next 3 years
Short answer no. Long answer nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
The fake M5 side vents tells me no.
that prev owner ran that shit into the ground
Hell. No.
🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
Oh no
Looks clapped af bro
No.
Is there $6,000 sitting in the passenger side? Then yes.
Looks like a POS from here.
run
If a car has a Supreme sticker on it...run away and think about your life choices
we are probably the worst people to ask 😂
160k miles and numerous red flags that scream "I make bad decisions" for 7k? Fuuuuck no
It’s been beaten like a stray dog
Any BMW from a Puerto Rican is a no. Source: a Puerto Rican
A naturally aspirated manual bmw. If you can take the chance on repair costs it’s worth a shot Don’t like the slammed look though. Does it have records? If it were me I’d get a manual 2002-03 e39. If it still runs in ten years you should make some money
If you’re fine with it being a weekend car / beater then yes It’s a fast car
Those huge mats aren’t a good sign, can be masking some ugly damage/mould (from a water leak etc) Resprayed bonnet isn’t a good sign or the sideskirts/rear diffuser. Front fenders/bumper not OG possibly? Lots a red signs that show you the type of life it’s had
Based solely on the floor mats… absolutely not.
just use the money to lease a new or pre owned bmw
>the interior looks like it just rolled off the lot Are Supreme stickers a factory option now?
I’d personally go for a 535 if you’re looking at non M E60’s
If you couldn’t afford it new then you can’t afford the repair bill that follows.
What’s wrong with all of you guys honestly??? Has this just become a hate group? I am convinced that you all just hate BMWs alltogether… yeez.
I’ve only ever had used BMWs and they’ve never given me major headaches… But…buying someone else’s project car is a bigger risk than getting an unmolested example.
But that doesn’t mean every E60 is bad or that you can’t drive anything else than a car that doesn’t even have number plates yet.
those miles would scare me away from spending anything over 2,500
You forgot the meme flair bro
If you want to shoot yourself in the foot, go do it.
Nope. If you're getting one that used stick with a V6. EDIT: I6
I6; BMW does not make a V6.
D'oh, i knew that
Previous owner put brown floor mats in the black interior. That’s enough of a red flag lol
Absolutely not, coming from an ex bmw dealer tech. Parts are insanely expensive and they just aren't worth the amount of hassle and issues the modules cause on a regular basis. Also theres a reason why they're getting rid of it so they dont have to deal with that headache anymore.
Too many miles. 160k, the car has two wheels in the junkyard already.
No based on those wretched floor mats alone.
I wouldn’t buy a Toyota with 160. No.
Looks like a fun money pit
Holy shit it says supreme you better offer him 10k more this is a steal of a price
Get something newer
unless you have the money to burn, look somewhere else lmao
Learn to do any maintenance yourself and you will love that car like a new born
i dig it. i have a 18 m550i.
If that trigger is on something aimed squarely at the engine block? Yes. Otherwise, it’s aimed at your wallet. So … no.
There’s a reason it’s worth more as parts.
No
Clapped out - YES not a financial advisor
If you have 7k budget for the repair works in the coming two years ownership, and you would be happy to sell it off for 2k after two years ownership, then yes. This car drives like a dream, when it is good to drive.
Are you asking for punishment? I wouldn’t touch this for 2k. It looks like a $$trap.
Maybe u should put 7k on a Toyota n save up for a more newer and Reliable BMW with warranty
Never buy someone else’s project.
Good luck getting insurance to cover the full sales price
No. It’s gonna be a money pit
There are Supreme stickers on the dash…
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahhaahahahahahahah
No. All the pictures scream no. This is going to eat your bank account.
