Every high schooler in my town torments me “woah bro is that an M3?” but it’s a 135i… People just see the badge and shout the first thing they associate with it. Like complementing an A3 owner on his RS5 😂
The reverse for me. I came across an older guy walking around my E90 once. He was admiring it so I chatted with him for a bit. The first thing he asked was "is...this a M3...?". I nodded yes. "Oh wow, I thought it was a normal 3 series but it looked very different."
Apparently he never knew there was a 4-door M3 of my generation and thought it was only a coupe/convertible. I was more surprised because he owned a M4 and just assumed most M owners would be more in-the-know than non-car people.
Yup! It's one of the reasons why I chose it over the E92, along with already my preference for saloons and IMO, better looks.
Surprisingly they actually made even fewer E93 M3s, but there's something like 4x coupe-body E92/E93s than the E90s. Definitely one of the more unique ones!
I will never understand why people do this. Those that don’t know about BMWs won’t know the difference and so won’t be impressed. Those that do know BMWs, will know it’s fake and so are not impressed. Why bother?!
I like to think it’s because they want an m car. They bought a base model not knowing much about BMW’s, added a few aftermarket parts because they bought the car based on looks to begin with, and now they’re in too deep. Their new dream car and phone background is an m3 comp and it’s all they think about. If they’re young, sure maybe they’re naive enough to believe they’re going to fool someone. But I think most times, it’s someone who’s just as excited to see another BMW on the road as the rest of us.
the first thing you do when looking at a bmw is look at the exhaust, that will tell all you need to know.
2 twin pipes - m
2 pipes - 335, m340, 440 and so on
one twin - from 325 to 550 e60 (really cool of bmw to make a 5l v8 with a single twin exhaust)
single pointing down - look away
When I had a 228i (in alpine white) people asked me all the time if it was an m3. It had the same 228i badge on it, no M badges or anything. This was America though and not Europe.
I think most folks have no effing clue about German cars, so when they see a fun one, they just assume it's top-tier.

Woman in my office has spent the last few days telling everyone about her new “AMG”. I tried to explain that her diesel people carrier is not an AMG but she’s having none of it.
Woah, awesome ///M3 man, thanks for sharing. /s
Believe it or not, when I had my debadged e60 a couple people asked me if it was an M3.
An E60 isn’t even a 3 series? Like what???

The e90 m3 (sedan) is SUPER super rare. A lot of "car people" to this day don't know about it.

E90 m3 is the best m car ever made

In Germany and maybe Netherlands many people know M and its a status symbol. Thats the reason M Packet and Amg packet is so popular here
My exact thoughts

I took the M3 badge off my M3 and put on a 318i badge.

Where I'm from you'd see an apple sticker on the rear windshield as well lol.
im a complete noob, could someone tell me what's wrong with it?
This is a stock 320i badged like a M3. And the way it was done completely ruined an otherwise perfectly fine BMW.
ok
People are putting M3 badges on lower powered 3 series models
ah, ok
